PSXE Poll Update: Heavy Rain Has An Overwhelming Impact

Heavy Rain appears to be a tremendous success: first-week estimates say about a half-million copies were sold, and gamers have responded with extreme praise.

In this past week's poll question, we simply asked what you thought about Quantic Dream's ambitious, excellently produced title and the vast majority were simply blow away. Most of the rest say the game is amazing but then again, they expected it. Overall, many gamers are currently holding an ongoing love affair with Heavy Rain; they go through it multiple times to see any one of the twenty-two possible endings, and they greatly appreciate the nod to sensitivity and real human emotion. No game is perfect and this one suffers from a bit of technical hitching and glitching but artistically speaking, it doesn't get much better. As we said in our review - linked above - it's not for everyone, as the "twitch gamers" likely won't care and honestly, Heavy Rain is simply too mature and intelligent for some younger gamers. On the other hand, most major critics understood the goal of the game and older players have really embraced Quantic Dream's gem.

This week, there can be no other subject than Final Fantasy XIII. And because you don't have it yet, we just want to know: do you think FFXIII will match your expectations? Or will it be a total flop; unworthy of being part of such a legendary franchise? So many gamers seem split on this issue and it'll be interesting to see where the readers stand...

Heavy Rain marks the advancement of video games into not only a new realm but a whole new world of possibilities. It deserves no less than it has gotten, and possibly even more. That said, I'm not done with it yet but I hope I'm wrong about who I think the Origami Killer is.

I expect nothing but greatness from FF despite some mixed reviews because reviewers just don't like JRPGs anymore. They have lost touch with the masses.

Heavy Rain's one of those games which has lasting impact on v-games imo

It will be the kind of game people will look at and go "yeah that game was TWISTED!"

Final Fantasy XIII is cursed FF
Looking forward to XV instead (since I'm sure Squeeeenix will go back to a real jrpg is)

I completely agree

What was Squeeenix really thinking when they gave XI a series number...?

Now they're erasing a really cool number XIV as well :(

Seriously, it's really dividing the main series into twos, threes, etc.....ugh

PS: I ain't paying no damn fee for no damn MMO. I'd rather play WKC or Demon's Souls (free online)

mmos are not bad, think about it, you pay 15 buks a month, wich equates to .50 cents a day, wich is not bad, you probably spend more than that on the lights that power your home or flushing the tolet and you get periodic updates with more content...its not as bad as it seems...

HOWEVER, with that said and as a guy who played wow a LONG time, i can say that MMO's attract and breed the worst of the worst in a virtual comunity , reason why i will probably never play one again , even worse is that your enjoyment or progression is dependant on said brainless angst filled people that populate afformentioned game's server...

dont get me wrong, i met some simply amazing and beautiful people there too, but my experience is that its usually a not so pleasant experience as just playing an online component of a single player designed game...

I played FFXI on the PS2 for a few years and met some really awesome people. I had no issues paying almost $15 a month, it actually saved me money in the long run because FFXI was getting constant updates and there was always something to do. I only bought like... one game a year while I was playing that because I'd always want to go back to FFXI and hang out with friends and level up in the process. I couldn't imagine how great it would be in an mmo with voice chat, you know ...just your party members or something. I'm really looking forward to playing FFXIV on my ps3

My first post on here ever. I am so happy that a game like Heavy Rain has been universally acclaimed for the most part. It speaks to the increasing maturity of the people who play video games. I can play MW2 for hours as well as enjoy an interactive story both to me are viable ways of enjoying a game. FFXIII will be great on technical basis, and I'm sure the story will be fitting but I am wary of the changes.

Heavy Rain is the only game that made me want to laugh, cry, and scream at my tv all at the same time. Sometimes you get so frustrated that Ethan is getting at this sh** thrown at him, but if you get a good ending for him you cant help but feel completely overwhelmed with joy and satisfaction. Every emotion in the game is so genuine and nothing feels forced, and that goes a long way to draw the player in.

As for this week's poll, it really depends on what you expect out of FF13. If you want a game in line with what the reviews have been saying then you are in for a treat. If you (like me) want something a bit more like previous FF titles then you are probably going to be disappointed (from what i read, at least). Neither side is correct, though i am a little sad to the the FF name take a turn like this, but if someone else can enjoy the game instead of me then i guess i'm ok with it.

A friend of mine already got the game (not sure how, but I think the vendors here just completely ignored the street date or w/e it's called). I asked him how it was, via the PSN, but he didn't answer yet.

But personally, I think the game is gonna be a disappointment as a Final Fantasy, but not as a game, get my drift?

I dont think theres 22 different endings.
Theres 6 for ethan
4 for madison
4 for blake
and 3 for Scott.. By ending i mean the epilogue scenes. But the end of the game -last part where u can control-can have alot of different scenarios too.

As much and as long as I was anticipating 'Heavy Rain', I really don't think I ever expected to play it every day for two weeks (and do hardly anything else, entertainment-wise) and not lose any of my enthusiasm to start again. Especially since it's such a dark story.
But for now, 'Heavy Rain' holds me ever so tightly in it's grip.

As for 'Final Fantasy XIII', I'm going to try my darndest to go in with an open mind, but considering I haven't truly LOVED a 'Final Fantasy' title since 'X' compounded with all the negative things I'm hearing from people who have had a chance to play the game, I admit to being more than a bit wary.

I love Heavy Rain. Aside from the cliche story and some minor poor line delivery, the game is solid as hell. I personally was getting tired of killing, shooting and more killing. I started to embrace games like ACII, Batman, and Demon's because their was no shooting, but then again it is all about killing, well except Batman, but the point is Heavy Rain was and is a great escape from the typical gaming experience. For those who complain about a underwhelming ending, try to get the ending that come with the '?' trophy and you will definitely be satisfied. Final Fantasy will get played, just not right now. GOWIII is my main interest for March.

just a FYI theres not 22 endings, thank god if there were id go insane getting the trophy for it.
i found a really good website last night explaining all the endings and how to get multiple of them with 1 play through, real massive time saver.

i have to admit the interest goes away after the first play through but the emotions still stick with you till the millionth.
never has a game made me cringe so much after completing a scene.
normally with games if something happens to the character to cause them massive pain you dont feel it at all, but with heavy rain it brought tears to me eyes.
a game has not done that since the ending of MGS4.

<<<<i found a really good website last night explaining all the endings and how to get multiple of them with 1 play through, real massive time saver.>>>>

HUH????
Why would you even want to defeat the whole purpose of this masterpiece of a game????

I mean come on now, you're able to branch off & experience the full range of emotions caused by all the different pathways, instead of just reading some words on paper!

That's like buying a double-dipped ice cream cone with sprinkles on it.
And then throwing away the cone just so you can watch the ice cream now in your hand, melt away & drip from your fingers till there's nothing left.

Not to mention the fact that you've also done some prior complaining about games being way too short too???

So I just don't get your statement above, at all!

all i said was i found a site that explains how to get all the endings, and which order to do them in to make things easier.
if you go for the no punishment ending first than that stops you from having to restart from the begining again which would be pointless since everythings the same.
whats the point of replaying the same crap if you dont have to?

I gotta go through HR again. It was the single greatest experience I've had on my PS3 for the 3 years I've had one. As for FF13, I'm still hovering under a purchase but my feet have almost touched the ground. When they finally do meet with the Earth, I will never ever ponder a purchase for this game again. Ben's and Arnold's reviews are FF13's last hope for pulling a purchase out of me. From the way the news is flying in, things look much more than a tad bit hopeless...

And only because I was truly super-curious about why you'd want to skip right through HR when it's such a multi-pathway game?

So, if you go back & re-read your own post, And include the sentence right above it, I'm sure you can see how anyone could misconstrue what it was you were saying, & could have took it the same way as I did.

Now that we've got a bunch of reviews on it, I'm thinking FFXIII will live up to my expectations just fine. I guess I have the "advantage" of not being a long-time fan of the series, so I'm not concerned with it carrying on the tradition set forth in a bunch of games I've never played. I was watching a video review of it yesterday, and the guy was complaining about the linearity, but what I saw taking place on the screen behind him looked just fine to me. Pretty cool actually. Everyone seems to agree that the battle system is excellent - once you finally get a chance to use it. As long as the characters and story are up to snuff, I'm pretty sure it will be a worthy purchase.

Too bad I'm broke right now :( It may very well be the next game I buy though.

Regarding Heavy Rain.

Just read a comment where someone said they had to "give the tongue" to get past a couple of sections.

I thought it was only me!

There was one scene (I wont say where), that I ran out of fingers during one of the more complicated button presses and I needed to use my tongue to press down the circle button.

Never had enough strength unfortunately...

Come on? Some one else please say it wasn't just me and I'm not the biggest noob around...
