FFXIII Tops 5 Million Shipments, Series Nears 100 Million
Final Fantasy may have become one of those legendary video game franchises that doesn't necessarily need insanely high review scores to sell extremely well.
The name alone can entice millions. According to Andriasang, Square-Enix has announced that over 3 million copies of Final Fantasy XIII have already been shipped to North America and Europe to support the game's March 9 launch. This brings the total shipment number to 5 million after 2 million landed in Japan between December and February. Obviously, the game is a tremendous sales success everywhere, which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who has been following the industry over the past few generations. All told, the long-running RPG series has shipped over 96 million copies of their beloved games all around the world. That is another tremendous achievement, especially considering the fact that role-playing has always been a relatively niche genre in comparison to sports, FPS, and action/adventure games. Perhaps the key to FF's success has been the appeal it has always held for all major regions of the world; Japan, North America and Europe always respond very, very well to every new installment. It's the premier RPG franchise, to be sure.
By the way, you can expect our review of FFXIII within the next couple of days. I'm knee-deep (or maybe only shin-deep) right now; give me a bit more time and we'll be good to go.

"I think the real indicator [that games have become a storytelling art form] will be when somebody confesses that they cried at level 17."
Who didn't shed a tear when Aerith or Zack were murdered, or who didn't cry for revenge when Shepperd burns an already dying Roach.
Or when (insert Heavy Rain reference here)

LV - Seriously i've been rather struggling and i have maxiumised my crystogensis grids each chapter. for instance on chapter 7 a 'Valco Velocycle' would use 'Gatlin Gun' and kill my main character in one go, even with protect in Sentinel.
But i have to say i am utterly addicted to this game and love it. Highly recommend it to thoughs FF fans who have been put off by the negative press.

Guess it kind of confirms that the fan base for the game is still sitting stronger on the Sony console.
Anyway, looking forward to the PSX review. I will be picking this bad boy up on Friday and not sleeping this weekend. Have to get through the game before I leave for Florida and my brother ruins the game for me.

And why did I get thumbed down? For going and checking out a different site or for reporting that the 360 was 1 point higher? Sometimes I am blown away by the things that people will hit the thumbs down button for.

Like I said earlier it is a quick sort of affirmation that the xbox end users are less enthused by the game than are the PS3 users, in a way confirming that the series loyalists are still Sony owners.
Though I could be completely wrong and 360 owners love RPGs just as much as PS3 owners and some mean hearted people are lower the metacritic user score for the xbox intentionally, but come on, really?

I did think that it kinda starts off slow with learning how to use the battle system...I realize that it's different, but for most of us, we are gamers, we pick up on things quickly, I think we could handle a little faster pace. The story pace moves well, but they gradually tack on new abilities to gameplay. I found myself saying, "why aren't my weapons getting experience??!" only to realize that I had to wait till 5-6 hours in the game when you get the weapon upgrade tutorial.
And that's just nit-picking....this game is awesome and I can't wait till I get off work today to continue my saga.

Off topic: To rehash what I have been saying and interject my full opinion: Excellent game, awesome everything. If it were turn based I would have sex with it. The only drawbacks are the early linearity and the battle system is definitely (while fast and furious and engaging) still Diet Final Fantasy.
If we could somehow mesh this advancement with the old style a little more versus leaving things behind I would be better pleased. But this game is well worth the price of admission, is CERTAINLY still an epic and is welcomed in the pantheon. It is not the bastard child, it just has a couple birthmarks.
As I said above, if it didn't have the Final Fantasy name attached, it would be pulling down 10s.

"in yet another departure from the series mainstays. Final Fantasy XIII dispenses with the classic EXP system. For a fairly lengthy section of the early story you will experience very little character progression or growth..... We can assure you that you do eventually get to involve yourself in the development of your party."
which to me, it says, you may not like it but give it some time and you will eventually like the direction we went. hahahaha. i saw a few more of these when they try to explain the new aspects of the game.

The amount of 'story time' is probably the same or even less. It's just that with the older games you'd be sitting there pressing A or X through box after box of text and reading it all (or skimming if you'd played the game before!). Now rather than telling the story via text boxes, there are cutscenes with dialogue and plot points.
So no, it's not a different story/gameplay ratio.

While I'd pick the oldschool real turn based battle system anyday, this one has definitely began growing on me the further in I get. At first it seemed like it was very much a one button system but as more layers of complexity were added, and the enemies became more challenging it became a lot more fun. I can't wait to see how the story turns out.
Also the linearity/lack of NPCs/towns doesn't seem to do a whole lot to diminish its enjoyability for me, which I found surprising. I was sure that without more exploration it would seem drab, but that's not the case. It seems to work with the course the plot line has charted so far.
