FFXIII Tops 5 Million Shipments, Series Nears 100 Million

Final Fantasy may have become one of those legendary video game franchises that doesn't necessarily need insanely high review scores to sell extremely well.

The name alone can entice millions. According to Andriasang, Square-Enix has announced that over 3 million copies of Final Fantasy XIII have already been shipped to North America and Europe to support the game's March 9 launch. This brings the total shipment number to 5 million after 2 million landed in Japan between December and February. Obviously, the game is a tremendous sales success everywhere, which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who has been following the industry over the past few generations. All told, the long-running RPG series has shipped over 96 million copies of their beloved games all around the world. That is another tremendous achievement, especially considering the fact that role-playing has always been a relatively niche genre in comparison to sports, FPS, and action/adventure games. Perhaps the key to FF's success has been the appeal it has always held for all major regions of the world; Japan, North America and Europe always respond very, very well to every new installment.  It's the premier RPG franchise, to be sure.

By the way, you can expect our review of FFXIII within the next couple of days. I'm knee-deep (or maybe only shin-deep) right now; give me a bit more time and we'll be good to go.

Can't wait for PSXe's review! I hope the review doesn't become skewed because of the game's name. Don't let it happen, Ben & Arnold!

Never played FF, but I'm waiting on this review to decide if I want to get into the series. Looks interesting. Just hope the gameplay isn't garbage. I'm not a role-playing fan but I want to see what the fuss is about with these RPG's.

Yeah. I literally can't wait. It has killed me waiting this long without buying it. I'm just going to take the plunge and buy it after I get the kid off the bus. I've got my old Blackberry on ebay right now getting ready to sell for the price of the game. Damn you FF. I feel a sick day coming on. From what I hear it will take 2 days just to get through the opening.

@Lazytrappin: You should give it a chance if you consider gaming as storytelling in the slightest way you have some catching up to do, Spielberg said
"I think the real indicator [that games have become a storytelling art form] will be when somebody confesses that they cried at level 17."
Who didn't shed a tear when Aerith or Zack were murdered, or who didn't cry for revenge when Shepperd burns an already dying Roach.
Or when (insert Heavy Rain reference here)

Yeah, so far from what I played its a fun game and the story is getting interesting.

Defiantly a good game.

But judged as a Final Fantasy game I'd have to rank it maybe the lowest. I'm having fun but I just keep thinking that this is not a Final Fantasy game.

I've played a couple RPG's but could never get into them. Shooters and Action/Adventure are my typical genres. I'm currently immersed in Battlefield Bad Company 2. I've tried Folklore and World of Warcraft before but they just didn't grad me. Maybe Final Fantasy will be my grand introduction into the Role-playing world. When is that review coming?

Lazytrappin: The thing is, FFXIII isn't representative of previous FFs at all, it's very different. I would suggest playing older PS1 RPGs (maybe like FF7-9 (heavy emphasis on 9)), but I'm not sure if you wouldn't mind the outdated graphics. If you do mind, then maybe something more recent like PS2 RPGs like Xenosaga (Episode1), FFX, or Shadow Hearts (pretty old graphics, but amazing game).

This game just keeps on giving, i really am impressed by it. Every battle is challenging, you rarley get a chance to take it easy. One complaint would be the empathise of the staggering mode in many cases it is essential to get this for your victory. But when you do get into Staggering mode it is damn satisfying.

im in about 15 hours and i can honsetly say the linear structure still hasnt effected my enjoyment of FFXIII. Which was my main concern.

I just took a peek over at metacritic and while the critics are pretty close to the same for both versions, 360 at 83 PS3 at 82, the fan scores differ greatly. The PS3 is sitting at an 8.6 I believe and the 360 is sitting at 7.3.

Guess it kind of confirms that the fan base for the game is still sitting stronger on the Sony console.

Anyway, looking forward to the PSX review. I will be picking this bad boy up on Friday and not sleeping this weekend. Have to get through the game before I leave for Florida and my brother ruins the game for me.

I honestly think it is because it was a "win" for the 360 to get a Final Fantasy game on the 360 so they are a bit more excited for it than the people who have been following it for so long and expected something different.

And why did I get thumbed down? For going and checking out a different site or for reporting that the 360 was 1 point higher? Sometimes I am blown away by the things that people will hit the thumbs down button for.

There are far more reviews out so far for the PS3 version and PS3 review sites tend to review far more subjectively than 360 sites. There's your reason, don't sweat it. Look forward to Ben and Arnold's reviews since we all know they will matter.

Believe it or not, some sites that only reviewed the PS3 version are being counted in the reviews for 360, and since there are fewer real 360 reviews it is skewing the results.

It's being shipped via UPS from Amazon, where I am a prime member. I suppose I could have ponied up the $3.99 or $2.99 for one day shipping and would have gotten it yesterday but figured one day wouldn't affect my satisfaction of the game, plus most of the time two day shipping shows up in one day. So there was a chance it would have been a wasted extra $3 or $4 bucks.

Metacritic is one site that tends to be 360 biased. They'll take multiplat games and put good ps3 reviews in with the 360 version and not put them on the ps3 version. They do it quite often actually. They still make a decent quick average score finder, but don't always take it to heart.

Agree with this comment 1 up, 0 down Disagree with this comment

I'm not really taking the critical score to heart I just find it interesting that for a game that is for the most part identical, and story-wise completely identical, it is garnering such a lower response from end users.

Like I said earlier it is a quick sort of affirmation that the xbox end users are less enthused by the game than are the PS3 users, in a way confirming that the series loyalists are still Sony owners.

Though I could be completely wrong and 360 owners love RPGs just as much as PS3 owners and some mean hearted people are lower the metacritic user score for the xbox intentionally, but come on, really?

I really think every reviewer was pretty hard of FFXIII, not that I think it is a bad game by any means. But maybe everyone expected so so much and parts of it they feel SE did not deliver on. So Limited, and Jawknee, do you guys think the game is in fact worth $60?

It's absolutely without a doubt worth $60. It's FF we're talking about here. Even if I believe it's a drop in quality from previous FF games it's still above a majority of the games currently on the market.

I certainly do, it is addicting. And Vertigo and I are sympatico. The overall FF feeling isn't quite there, but if you removed that FF title and called it something else, this game would be pulling down 10s.

The Japanese version was worth the 100 bucks I spent for it, so I'd say that hell yes, this version is totally worth the 60. Im glad now to understand the story a bit better, and I think they did a great job with the English cast. I was skeptical at first having made it to the end of the Japanese version. Good job Square-Enix.

So far this is a great game. The characters and story are working well...and the cinematics are just amazing (typical FF style).

I did think that it kinda starts off slow with learning how to use the battle system...I realize that it's different, but for most of us, we are gamers, we pick up on things quickly, I think we could handle a little faster pace. The story pace moves well, but they gradually tack on new abilities to gameplay. I found myself saying, "why aren't my weapons getting experience??!" only to realize that I had to wait till 5-6 hours in the game when you get the weapon upgrade tutorial.

And that's just nit-picking....this game is awesome and I can't wait till I get off work today to continue my saga.

On topic: I bet most of those 5 million shipments were snapped up already. It will be cool to watch the odometer spin over 100million. FF truly is the best series of video games ever made.

Off topic: To rehash what I have been saying and interject my full opinion: Excellent game, awesome everything. If it were turn based I would have sex with it. The only drawbacks are the early linearity and the battle system is definitely (while fast and furious and engaging) still Diet Final Fantasy.

If we could somehow mesh this advancement with the old style a little more versus leaving things behind I would be better pleased. But this game is well worth the price of admission, is CERTAINLY still an epic and is welcomed in the pantheon. It is not the bastard child, it just has a couple birthmarks.

As I said above, if it didn't have the Final Fantasy name attached, it would be pulling down 10s.

In my opinion it is well worth the wait. Final Fantasy still has yet to disappoint. As far as tehe main series goes. We'll forget about Mystic Quest all those years ago lol. Now that it's been released, it's nice to see a lot of the naysayers reversing their opinion of it. It really is a great game. And a lot more fast paced than what we're used to. And the visuals are top notch all around.

I bought the collectors edition strategy guide for FF13, although i wont use it until my second playthrough, and i found some parts of it pretty funny, at least the beginning pages. It actually tells you that this part will be different from traditional final fantasys but it makes sure to mention that as you play longer, you'll start to like the new additions/replacements. Heres one of their assurances,

"in yet another departure from the series mainstays. Final Fantasy XIII dispenses with the classic EXP system. For a fairly lengthy section of the early story you will experience very little character progression or growth..... We can assure you that you do eventually get to involve yourself in the development of your party."

which to me, it says, you may not like it but give it some time and you will eventually like the direction we went. hahahaha. i saw a few more of these when they try to explain the new aspects of the game.

The thing with everyone complaining about how there are too many cutscenes, "It's like watching a movie blah blah", seem to be forgetting what old Final Fantasies were like.

The amount of 'story time' is probably the same or even less. It's just that with the older games you'd be sitting there pressing A or X through box after box of text and reading it all (or skimming if you'd played the game before!). Now rather than telling the story via text boxes, there are cutscenes with dialogue and plot points.

So no, it's not a different story/gameplay ratio.

Yeah I'm about 10-12 hours in so far, and it's fantastic. The characters, story, graphics are all solid.

While I'd pick the oldschool real turn based battle system anyday, this one has definitely began growing on me the further in I get. At first it seemed like it was very much a one button system but as more layers of complexity were added, and the enemies became more challenging it became a lot more fun. I can't wait to see how the story turns out.

Also the linearity/lack of NPCs/towns doesn't seem to do a whole lot to diminish its enjoyability for me, which I found surprising. I was sure that without more exploration it would seem drab, but that's not the case. It seems to work with the course the plot line has charted so far.
