FFXIII Tops UK Charts, Heavy Rain Steady At #4
Some contrasting reviews and a lower-than-expected average critical score won't stop the fans, especially in the UK.
According to Chart-Track, Final Fantasy XIII shot to the very top of the UK sales charts last week, immediately following its March 9 launch. It quickly supplanted EA's Battlefield: Bad Company 2, another excellent game that also debuted at #1 a week earlier. Other notable titles on the top ten list include Heavy Rain, the stellar PS3 exclusive that received glowing praise from critics and has continued to sell well after its February launch. Also, Aliens vs. Predator managed to crack the top 10 again, despite a lot of reviewers telling gamers to ignore the merely average production. Here's the list:
- 1. Final Fantasy XIII
- 2. Battlefield: Bad Company 2
- 3. Just Dance
- 4. Heavy Rain
- 5. Wii Fit Plus
- 6. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
- 7. Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing
- 8. Aliens vs. Predator
- 9. Wii Sports Resort
- 10. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
God of War III launches this week so you can expect yet another reshuffling of the top slots in just a few days time but for now, FFXIII is dominating. We don't necessarily disagree with the consumers, either; it's an awesome game and one well worth your time and money. But there will always be a vocal group that speaks out against its lack of a "Final Fantasy feel."

Boss: BFBC2 is no. 1 in the UK charts! I can't celebrate this success enough! *takes out champagne bottle from liquor cabinet* Hey everyone, let's celebrate!
Employee: Again? That's the 4th time this week. What's the occasion, boss?
Boss: To BFBC2's success! *drinks up*
Employee2: Uh, boss, we were beaten by FFXIII
Boss: PFFFT!
END
Why do I get the feeling the above actually happened?

The fact that the earlier part of the game is linear didnt bother me because story events happened very frequently. I dont see wht people are complaining so much about the combat, i think its one of its freshest features (Though i do admit it sucks when the lead dies its game over, currently struggling on a boss due to that.)

I would create PS3 remakes of Xenosage 1, 2 and 3, I'd commission an Episode 2½ to fill in the gap between 2 and 3, and I'd commission an episode 4, then I'd complete the work of genius by going ahead and remaking Xenogears for PS3 in full HD.
All turn based and all the Xenosaga games using the voice cast from Episode 3.
See, I don't want much. :D

to me its right there up with ff7,tactics, and secret of mana,
itts justone of those experiences, nothing cant quite compare, so you cant really measure it against current titles, those games were rpgs in a class of their own , epic is what comes to mind ;)

If I was in charge, I'd want to try and make something that has all of the elements from my favorite games. Time/Space bending puzzles (Ratchet & Clank, Braid, Portal. A trophy for creating a game breaking paradox, at which point you'll have to go back to a previous save file), epic story/visuals, hidden items/trophies/weapons/armor, explorable worlds you can get lost in (including a giant labyrinth), random sidequests to create ultimate weapons/armor (FFX), minor upgrade system to characters and weapons, to get from place to place you will drive, Burnout-style, game play can either be hack and slashy (Castle Crashers), shooter (Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank), or turn based depending on which weapon class you have equipped at the time. (ie, if you equip an Uncharted gun, then all the enemies will use that weapon class and base their tatics on those weapons. If you then switch to a umbrella or fish, all the enemies will put away their Uncharted guns and bring out their Castle Crashers weapons. It's essentially 4 games in one depending on the weapon you use.)
I have no idea if putting that many different things into a game could work (it might feel scattered and disjointed), but that's the game I'd make if I had infinite time and money.

If that many people are buying those games, it makes me worried for the future of gaming. What if companies start deciding that its easier and more profitable to makes those kinds of games.
If FF is willing to alter their game to be more shooter like, what else could happen? It's just scary to think about.

Are you guys reviewing Resonance of Fate. I'm still on the fence on this title because havent heard much....well, anything about it. Your input may help with that decision since i usually agree with your reviews. Does anyone know which is the lead platform. If ps3 is a port, i might have to scratch it off my list or maybe get it when its in the bargain bin.

Both versions will probably be identical, but if I had to bet, I'd say the PS3 version will be better. Either way, it won't be Bayonetta-fied, if that's what you're worried about.

So basically i still have bad company 2, heavy rain, final fantasy 13, and god of war SERIES to go through before i can get to resonance of fate.

I paid to go see a movie in theaters, it was rated #1 at the box office, but the movie sucked. All reviews for it said it sucked, it was ripped apart, but lots of people went to see it before the reviews were out, does that make it good?
Just saying that sales don't necessarily = quality. How many times have people rushed out to buy a game on release day, only to turn around and sell it a few days later.
Just some examples to ponder.

It seems like every games sites comments section has errupted into an all out fanboy vitriolic war to the death.
Someone seems to have released the orcs and every decent comment is drowned out by a sea of noise.
I couldn't read any comments section about Heavy Rain without getting bomarded with serious spoilers. The hatred at the moment being spouted about God of War and the PS3 is just astounding.
It might be just me but it seems a lot worse than usual.
Present company excepted :-)
