I still haven't heard of anyone I know with a failed PS3. Perhaps leaving it on in a poorly ventilated and insulated spot for 24 hours a day is to blame? I say that, cause your computer, PS3, 360, anything really, will work overtime if it's shoved on a shelf barely big enough for the system to fit.

As for me, I have a PS3 60GB I pre-ordered 1 month before PS3 was released... no problems so far.

(Sidenote: Is it strange that I would buy my PS3 on a pre-order before release specifically for FFXIII?? I admit.... major fanboy of FF series)

Seriously if you had a job or saved-money-for-a-new-PS3, you wouldn't be terrified by godslim's comment, you wouldn't know YLOD till it hit your 60GB in the face. I got it, I know 2 friends that got it, godslim may be telling the truth, yes I know it hurts, trying to console yourselves by thumbing him down when that ylod might be inevitable, don't be scared people, its just a machine not a human being.

Fair enough. Still, none of my friends have ever had problems, and this thread is the first I've ever heard of people having problems. So from my experience, you can understand why I find it hard to believe there would be someone who had 2 fried, let alone 1.

It could be chalked up to just very poor luck. Perhaps there's a difference between systems released in Canada's snow-boot and up here in the great 14 gold north. (I'm pretty sure not, though.) Or maybe it's just more common to hear about problems than it is to hear about everyday feel-good stories. Anyone know the stat on failed PS3's?

My friend Mason used to be a xbox360 fanboy, but after 3 RROD's, he switched over, got a 60GB fatty, and has been happy since. (This, of course, made me feel wonderful for his switch and gave me a wonderful 'told-ya-so' moment. I gave him a consolation beer, though, so it's all good now.)

Yeah, the YLOD vids on the net are all fake and people with PS3's taken apart in bits on their kitchen table while fixing them are really just tricking us! it is just really Lego bricks. :/

I'm in the Great White North and I've had two YLoDs (last December and two weeks ago). In the ten weeks or so between them, there were 9171 other work orders, so it's not as rare as we would hope (though I don't know if that's Canada-only or if the service center also repairs other Sony products).

I don't abuse or over-use my PS3; the room tends to be dusty, but I vacuum the vents regularly.

The PS3 is cutting-edge technology (especially the 60 GB) and cutting-edge tech is vulnerable to failures.

I would say this is probably isolated occurances and not widespread. But the conspiracy theorists will be popping up soon saying this is another ploy to get people to ditch their fat originals and go slim.

I too have a 60 GB PS3, but I got like 1 freeze, at like the start of the game trying to exit the menu. It was just the one time in like the 60 hours of play so far.

Its working fine on my slim. Haven't played it on my 60gb. I'm paranoid to even use my 60gb for games. Its a refurbish from Sony and i don't want it to get YLOD again and eat my game. Use it mostly for Netflix.

Tell that to my original launch 60gb. I had it for 3 years, got a Blue Ray drive failure, sent it in, Sony repaired it, less then 20 days later got YLOD. This is my second 60gb and its out of warranty. I consider my 60gb a collectors item. Would like it to work as long as possible. if it dies again, thats another $150(or $170 now, i guess) to get it fixed. Besides, my Slim has a 500gb HDD in it. Better for gaming.

The problem is over heating. If your 60GB PS3 freezes playing a game or blu-ray movie, just let it cool down for a while and it will be fine. This has happened to me many times - not just with FF13.

Actually, FF13 is one of the few games I can play on my 60GB PS3 - all other games (new & old) have black lines that go all through the screen rendering them unplayable. I just don't have $150 to send it in to get fixed, as I just paid $150 to have my 40GB PS3 fixed after it died (the overheat prevention sensor failed and locked down the console).

The problem is not overheating. The problem is the disc. SE had this same issue with SO4. The game will freeze at various places. Its mostly random, but some locations have a greater chance of it happening. The problem is that some of the disks are not quite perfect and PS3s with dirty lenses are unable to cope. Some of the discs are bad enough to fail no matter what.

If a game makes one PS3 overheat then the majority of systems of the same model should have the same problem. Clearly that is not the case, otherwise few if any 60GB systems would play the game.

Sometimes I wonder when people will just accept that the PS3 is actually very reliable? This issue is likely to be worse on older systems because the build up of grime on the BD lens makes dealing with poor quality discs more difficult.

BTW overheating is abnormal and indixcates a fault when it becomes a regular event.

Yep, Droid does posts to PSX - the wonder of a full Internet Web browser on a smart phone...

The virtual keyboard is pretty decent as well, as is the physical one you reveal by sliding the phone open. Sony could take note of this, the browser on the PS3 and PSP should be far more mature than the one on the Droid, but the Droid browser feels more solid and polished.

I have to say, this thing is ridiculous. 16GB storage, 5MP camera with flash, better han 480 video capture, audio/video playback, gps, compass, wifi, etc.... Ridiculous.

I'm about 15 hours in on my Slim and it's been running fine so far. I'd love to have played it on my launch 60gb, but alas, she never got to see either of the games she was purchased for (GOWIII and FFXIII).

I had one freeze. It was before a boss battle in Chapter 2. The second time around, I just skipped the cutscene. I haven't had any problems since but I've only played about 5-6 hours, not 50-60. Freezes happen. I have a 60 GB model.

Yes, I like my women feminine. Jillian's not super masculine. Like, she still has hips, and breastesses, and I believe she doesn't have an Adam's apple (which would be the absolute deal breaker), and her facial proportions are still within women's range. But, she's got some Madonna arms going on, doesn't she? Went a bit overboard on those. Lightening up those eye-brows would reduce those hard features a bit, too.

I have a 60GB model and have had no issues.I'm only like an hour in though. The Ardamis boards link in the Kotaku article also has users reporting freezing/crashing issues with the 360 version as well. I don't understand why Kotaku only chose to write an article about the PS3 version, when both versions seem to be suffering from isolated technical issues.

I'm not that far, probably 15 hours due to Heavy Rain, but so far my 80 gig B/C Motorstorm bundle system has had no problems. I don't play for lengthy periods, maybe 2 hours at a time. That system has so far outlasted and dodged every single possible bullet gunning for it except of course the The Day the Earth Stood Still (PS3 fat blackout)

Any idea at which point it is hanging Ben? It could just be people playing for like 5-6 hours straight.

SE has the same issue with Star Ocean 4, some of the discs are not well made and the game freezes instead of telling you there Isaac problem with reading the disc. Older systems or those in dusty environments might be more susceptible to this because of dirt building up on the lens. But as long as the disc is perfect there is no problem. Its only when a disc isn't perfect that there is an issue.

i didn't like the demo for valkyria chronicles either, but i never bought the game. Maybe ill pick it up. Should be cheap now.

I have to admit that I have had an issue with a 40gb FAT ps3 system. I played FF13 for approx. 8 hours over 2 days I then played the first assassins creed before reinserting FF13. WHen I inserted FF13 the second time I got to a part in the Galpra White wood with Lightning and Hope when it froze after a fight. After this I have tried reformatting, complete formatting (twice), and a systems file restore numerous times. I can now no longer play blue ray discs, and speaking to Sony they believe the drive or lens is the issue now. This happened after playing FF13 as all other games played perfectly before this. Also there are numerous complaints of this nature on the playstation community forum.

I am currently having to decide if I want to go for a new slim PS3 or utilise the out of warranty service from Sony which will cost £131.

The older models seems to have Blue Ray drive/Lens problems. Same thing happened to my 60gb. IF your 40gb isn't backward compatible just buy a Slim.

Its not backward compatible, am thinking if I get a refurb that the comonents will be updated and I wont suffer from this afterwards. Buying a slim is an expensive option

There is a BluRay lens cleaning product available from Maxell - IIRC it uses aerodynamics instead of brushes to clear the very fine dust that can accumulate on the lens. Well, that's the claim.

There is definitely something to this but I don't think FFXIII is actually the cause of it.

I was watching the Evangelion 1.11 blu-ray when it froze on me and went through the same issues that people are reporting to have with FF.

Thinking my freezing problem was just an isolated issue with the blu-ray movie I proceeded to pop in FF13 and within 20 minutes the game froze on me and went through all the problems like everyone else.

What I've found out and what I think might be the problem is in my attempts to fix the issue I went into the PS3's safe mode and did the Restore File System which proceeded to give me a corrupted disk warning and did the restore thing. I than did Restore File System once again and it still said that I had a corrupted disk.

I've also found a couple of other people that have blu-ray problems also have this unfixable corrupt data. So I think this could possibly the core problem that people are having and maybe just not a typical hardware breakdown.

Jikkle, I agree, I went through the safe mode too and restored the file system, it worked before but now seems to be a constant issue. I just seems that it is coincidental that it is just after I started playing FF13 that it failed, and to say this is one game that I seriously was waiting for.

Yeah, this restore file system option is a great option. The HDD can become fragmented and some file corruption can occur which can cause games to freeze. The other thing that can happen is simply the lens in the BluRay drive being a little grimy and the disc being less than perfect. This can cause read errors during playback.

I was having the this issue,after i beat sazh's Eidolon it kept freezing,i was very annoyed because he was tough.It froze again after i beat him the second time.It came through on the 3rd time.

Later it froze after i defeated the sanctoms ship near hopes home,I wasn't that annoyed because he was easy but just a note.

First we have the PS3 Apocalyps3 that affected only 60 g/b fattys etc were the 80 gb's affected I think now this is affecting the 60 gb's ffs this is not looking good for my 60 gb fat P3.

Cant say I have noticed any freezing issues, although it has locked up once on Heavy Rain but unfroze itself I saved turned the machine off and on again restarted since then nothing. also twice on Bad Company 2 but apart from that. that's it.

The biggest issue I have seen with oder systems is HDD related. If the HDD gets fragmented (which it will) and any file corruption occurs (which is does) then sometimes a game will do something that requires data from the HDD and the HDD thrashes around for a while trying to retrieve it. It's not the PS3, and it's not overheating, it's simply that the HDD is a tad on the messy side. I hope that Sony ships a defragmentation utility of some sort sometime because I have a feeling all our older systems could do with a wee bit of a defrag.

I used to have the 60GB, its cool with BC and all, but face it, it'll eventually FAIL. My 60GB YLOD'd in 2008. I'm using the 80GB now.

Its either you upgrade to a Slim cause that old man 60 will retire on you!

i have a 250gb slim and on chapter 4 with no problems as of yet.... except odin and him killing me within 20 seconds.... other than that im fine...... on another note my friends gow 3 was freezing up... but mine is just fine :) im so pumped sony will get TWO game of the year awards so far..... uncharted 2 and now gow 3..... playing gow 3 you realize which system is the future and which is a flash in the pan

Hey, out of curiosity, has anyone ever gotten Sony to fix their YLOD issue on a 60gig model?

Do they change your machine, or do you get the same 60gig, backwards compatible, model back?

Also, has anyone ever gotten a repaired machine back, and have it die on them months later?

I'm just curious, because I know some people who have gone through 6 Xboxes, and I was wondering if the PS3s also have a chance of dying a few months after getting it fixed.

Sony repaired my 60 GB back in December. They claim to have sent me the same machine (it also had the same Serial #), but I was unable to use the Restore feature to, well, restore all my files, so I had to do it one piece at a time. I had just about finished when I got the YLoD again. Fortunately, I made a new Backup just before it died and it was still within the 90 day repair warranty, so the second repair was free.

I am currently waiting for my PS3 to be returned. We'll see if I can Restore the system this time.

Got a slim and nothing has happened. Though it it has been freezing a bit whenever my brother plays MW2 straight from morning to night in weekends but i think thats cause it overheats in my small crammed room.

I once had a bad disc for FFX, there was a fatal freeze near the end on an FMV. I rented a copy from Blockbuster, swapped in my bad disc, and gave it back. :P

Don't look at me like that, I doubt any renters got to the end anyway.

At any rate, I did get the joke. It simply wasn't funny. Others built on it to make it a little more comical, but all-in-all, it's been done before. Basically, it's your text book go-to post whenever you wish to be sarcastic but realize that straight-up sarcasm will basically be considered by most under the "lame" column.

Also, I don't believe you honestly think what I think is insignificant to you. If it was, you wouldn't have felt a need to respond, would have moved on, gave it a thumbs down, and forgot about it 5-10 seconds later.

As for me, you're absolutely right! I can be a douche. I'm one of those educated types, who on a regular basis, is typically a nice guy who NORMALLY posts only when there is something productive to say (this case excluded). However, there is the occasional time when someone tries to be funny, comes off a little loud and brazen, and I start looking for a fight. I love conflict, which is probably not something to be proud of. In reality I'm a former university athlete who's day in the sun is done. Some may consider this me compensating for my now lack of consistent competition by looking for a fight, but ... well... no... ya they'd probably be right.

At the end of the day, however, you're the one with 4 ups and 20 downs, while I maintain a positive +/- average at 3 and 2. Let's not forget you were one of the only two downs. This may spurn on more downs, but that's ok. As for this post, I'm not sure what will happen. Either people will down me for an irrelevant post (as they probably should, if I'm honest with myself), or they'll positive me for perhaps enjoying this read, or for my honesty about not only you, but myself as well. 80 gig owner right here, never had a prob, even avoided the apocalps3 completley, made it a cooler to get the air from behind and throw it up and to the front of the desk its in just for the hell of it

as long as the FRONT and RIGHT SIDE vent holes remain unobstructed, any fan pulling air thru it will help cool it, hardly need it though, just turn it on on long gaming sessions or really hot days , only times it has frozen on me its when im playing while also downloading crap on background

Got a 80 gb (2usb) and thought FFXIII had crashed wierdly I couldnt do anything but enemy kept attacking me I then noticed my controller had run out of power /slaps forehead

A while back I did have issues with GT5P though the intro sequence would break up and skip sound.
I thougt it was the new 320gb HDD I had just installed, after installing it I put everything back on new HDD from a backup I had made and everything worked properly axcept for GT5P intro so I deleted the game data + save data (hadnt got very far anyway) and everything worked ok again.

So from now on I think I will just backup my game saves saving a lot of time on the backup process and just reinstall game data as I play them.

Whats that old Ps1 game that did crazy stuff? Sometimes the screen would go blank, other times the system boot screen would come up or it'll say your memory cards were erased. And it wasn't Metal Gear Solid.

Anyway, that's what this story reminds me of.

I'm having freezing issues with FF13. It started about 40 minutes into the game for me. There was never really a specific spot for it. Even if I just load up a game and leave it idling, if I come back to it after ten minutes or so, it is completely frozen (yes, I turned my controller back on). This has made the game pretty much unplayable for me. I have a 40 gig ps3 and the only other time it has frozen on me is when I could play Fallout 3, and even then it was only maybe 2 or 3 times over a few month span. I have over 50 games and never happens on any of the other games. After trying to play FF13 I was able to play White Knight Chronicles just fine. I later loaned FF13 to my friend and he has gotten around 15 hours of playtime logged in with no issues. He has an 80 gig system.

I've figured out what's causing the freezing problems....

It's the 60Gigger's "EMOTION" chip!!!!!

It's sadly feeling a wave of nostalgia, that SE has taken away so much from FFXIII.

So now every time our 60gigger's get to a point where SE chopped out important series elements, our poor machines are just trying to catching their breath by stopping, sighing, & shedding a few tears.

And where SE is leading it, I'm not so sure that our 60 Giggers will really have any will left to continue trudging along dejectedly, down this narrow path......too much longer.

I've had crashing issues with ffxiii about 15 hours into the game; I had played for maybe 2 hours before it just shut off on me in the middle of some battle, no blinking light and won't come back on for me. I thought it was maybe an overheating issue(even though it has "breathing room" around it on the coffee table so it should be able to ventilate), however it has cooled and still will not boot up. I have 120G, bought a week ago. Virtually brand new.

I have a 80gb (4 usb) ps3 and after this game froze on me my blue ray driver has not been able to read any type of media(cds,dvds,blue rays). I've never had this problem playing other games for hrs on end and my ps3 was in great condition before this happened. I keep my ps3 in an open area away from dust and good ventilation. I also keep my games in very good condition by putting unused games back into their original cases. I have tried a lot of methods to revive my blue ray driver, except for sending it to ps3 support or replacing my driver and nothing has worked. I believe a lot of people are suffering from the same types of problems that branched off from this incident.

I got my wife a brand new slim 120GB PS3 a few weeks ago and FFxiii. The PS3 runs great on every other game but FFxiii. The disk is brand new with no scratches, not even a small one. After 17 hours of playtime, a few hours each night, the game started freezing tonight on the same spot and the save file related to that spot. I found this and other forums that described the same problem, which appears to be a game coding issue. She eventually got it to play past the problem but only after multiple hard resets to the system and an amazing amount of patience. The many reports of needing the laser/lens replacement worries me but I suppose it's better to burn it out now while it's under warranty. Perhaps Sony and SE will pay more attention when a 3 week old slim unit dies. I pulled the power each time it hung, not sure if that helped to keep it from burning out the laser or not but it is still running after multiple hangs on the same spot tonight. I'm sticking with the assumption that the laser gets stuck on during the freeze and burns it out due to the software glitch; thus my immediate reaction to unplug and hopefully save it. It hung for the first time tonight, a few hours ago, and it has been running for 2 hours since she got it running again without issue. Not sure if any of this helps but I at least wanted others to know it happened on a brand new unit. The unit is so new it doesn’t even have any dust and it is operating on a media stand and is cool to the touch.

Oh, I should mention that when it freezes, the main menu is all messed up with the background gone and everything was grey, white and black (no colors). Most of the icons were spinning and everything was wrong looking. It was like the entire PS3 OS was corrupted in memory. Physically turning it off and back on corrects the menu corruption problem, until it hangs again.

I got the old ps3 version. FS13 froze on me while playing and now my ps3 isnt even turning on any more and when it does it freezes within 5-10 min after bootup. Im hopeing square enix or sony resolve this problem soon.

I have an original 20gb PS3 and I bought FFXIII at launch and played thru the game without issue.
I turned in the game for another title afterwards and just now bought FFXIII again to replay it. This time my game is freezing after the cut scene in Chapter 1 where Hope and Vanille crash into the Pulse fal'Cie Vestige. The short cut scene occurs and then the screen goes black and does not load the following in game mode of play. I reset my PS3 and it still occured. The game is used and had some minor scratches so I took it in and exchanged it for another pre-owed copy that looks spotless. On that disc my game still freezes at the exact same spot.
I don't believe this is an issue of a second damaged disc nor do I see how this is a PS3 issue since I played thru the game a year ago when it came out.

ANY thoughts?
