God Of War III Should Top 1 Million Sold In First Week

Most are expecting God of War III to be one of the best-selling PlayStation 3 exclusives ever, if not the best-selling. Therefore, these numbers shouldn't surprise you.

After learning there were over 450,000 pre-orders for the mammoth title, early indications are that this final entry in the trilogy should outperform God of War II by 20-30% in North America. This from VGChartz where they tell us that with almost all the pre-orders sold on day one, first-week sales should hover around 650,000 - 700,000 units, which would greatly outpace the 540,000 copies of GoWII sold in week one. What's perhaps most interesting about this is that if you compare the established userbases of the PS2 and PS3 at the time of each game's release, you'll see that GoWIII is even bigger. It'd be interesting to see just how many PS2s there were in 2007 when GoWII released; I believe it's much higher than the approximately 34 million PS3s that are now in homes around the world. Getting back to the sales, GoWIII launches in Europe today, so total weekly sales should top one million copies...this would outstrip most all PS3 exclusives, including Uncharted 2 and Heavy Rain.

If it does hit a million in the first week, it would also allow the God of War franchise to hit 10 million total copies sold, so that's a tremendous accomplishment. We'll have to wait for the official NPD numbers next month but as of right now, GoWIII is already a sales dynamo.

This gives me hope that ps3 owners are not all that bad...

Hopefully this trend continues for the sake of "good gaming"

This saves Sony from having to force/influence their 1st/2nd party devs to start making FPSs/shooting games.

Nice to know. MY ps3 red dotted on me after the first save point, I'm super pissed . I also have uncharted 2, bioshock 2 and prince of Persia to still play.

That's a lot of copies in the first week!

Is it any wonder that the PS3 is suffering supply issues? GoW3 followed closely on from Heavy Rain and FFXIII. All three are driving console sales hard. Good times.

I was pretty much expecting to be just mildly pleased, or even slightly disappointed. But after playing 17hrs, on Titan Mode (i took a heads-up from Arnold's review on the game's length, and decided to stretch it out by playing on the hardest immediately available difficulty) , this is easily GOTY candidate for me (even Mass Effect 2 has taken a decisive back-seat to this one). I haven't touched any other game since this one has been in my possession. And I hate Kratos! Yet, even I can't deny how breath-taking this game is! Bravo Santa Monica, and Bravo Stig.

MyWorstNightMar: Unlike in the first couple of games, that there is no mystique to Kratos: He is, without question, a monster, not an anti-hero. He kills indiscriminately, makes friends only when he needs something, and destroys friends as soon has he gets what he wants, even at the cost of killing his own. I'm pretty sure that was the intent: We're not supposed to like him. We're not even suppose to pity him. I wouldn't have enjoyed playing as him if this game wasn't so damn incredible.

J: Except for a few challenges, and a couple of bosses, Titan Mode is pretty forgiving, surprisingly. However, button-mashing leads only to certain death: you have to figure out the precise strategy and timing necessary to each fight. And when you do, it's very satisfying.

ya but im kinda over god of war now. dont get me wrong. the game was amazing. but to me it kinda started off with a bang and ended with a little pop! ive done all i care to with it now within the first 4 days. maybe i just burned myself out on it.

UII was not the best selling game ever???? I really dunno how halo 3 can reach 9 million and uncharted still under 2 i believe.

I know I still haven't got UII,heavy,GOW3,FFxiii,WKN,DS,AC ....... etc
but all will be bough on the same day on sep before I return to my ps3 :)

The "oh sh!t" moments in this game just keep coming. I've been trying to play this and FFXIII at the same time. its not working out to well. Ill need to replay GOW3 after im done with FFXIII.

I still think the most impressive sales were from final fantasy 13 japan, considering the install base. Half the install base in japan owned a copy of final fantasy.

It also is arguable that mw2 is just as big in attach rate for ps3. It's just amazing how these games keep pumping out and yet I hunger for more.

This is the greatest game I have ever played.

The story, the action, the scale, the voice acting, and the graphics - man, those graphics deliver a package not available anywhere else.

Everytime I believe I have seen the best this game can offer, GOW3 gives me another impressive moment.

Let developers around the globe take notice in what a complete and dynamic package (with bleeding edge visuals of course) will net you in sales when you prioritize the PS3.

This is really good news. I have not got my copy yet because I had never played the first 2, however I manages to snag the collection last nite.

Thank you best buy rewards zone, only $5 for the GOW collection. Kratos was fulfilling my bloodlust last nite for hours.

Man cant wait to go home. Game currently at home. But I'm over 2,000 miles away in Hawaii. Vacation had to start when gow 3 comes outs. Well i guess i kinda prefer to be here than home.

Great news, but hardly surprising. Lots of Xbots are former Sony fanboys, and they still love Kratos.

I get a thrill every time I put the game in and it says "Ultimate Edition" on the menu screen. Nice touch!

disappointing, i was hopping it would sell 2M within its first week because well this is one of sonys biggest series.
this is what people bought a ps3 for, this is what people who recently upgraded from a ps2 to ps3 were for.
this is the halo for sony and it cant even muster a 2M units.
ps3 community i am very, very, VERY! disappointed in you.

honestly this arvo i looked at my PSN list i had 23 people online and not one was playing GOW3.
NOT ONE!
15 of them were playing MW2 and 6 of them were playing BFBC2 and the rest well cant exactly remember.
but still come on guys do you want to see these fantastic games dissapear?
im sure im not the only one who wants 8 days and the getaway 3 to go back into development.

And I can see why. I'm playing on hard and I just beat Clancey Brown (hope somebody gets that, spoiler-free is the way to be!). This game is just leaves me in awe, you feel the seething hatred that has been building up in Kratos, and now it's gonna make my tv explode.
