PSXE Poll Update: A No-Decision On FFXIII GotY Nomination
It's sort of difficult to analyze statistics when they're all over the place.
Technically, most voters said Final Fantasy XIII is a "great game, but not worthy" of a Game of the Year nomination but this group was separated by only 26 votes from those who said "maybe, it depends on the rest of 2010." Then the number of people saying it absolutely deserves a nomination is nearly identical to those who don't think the game is even that great, so I'm not sure what to do here. It appears to be a no-decision from my angle, but I suppose it's encouraging that the majority at least admit the game in question is great, and well worth playing. And when it comes to FFXIII, I think that's the proper viewpoint. You can't please everyone all the time, and if you simply examine Square-Enix's epic RPG for what it is, one has to admit that it's quite impressive. And of course, it's always tough to say a game deserves a GotY nomination when we're not even into the fourth month of the year... For our part, I honestly don't know how we'll feel at the end of the year.
This week, we want your take on the latest massive PlayStation 3 exclusive. The hype was massive building up to the launch of God of War III so the question is, has it lived up to the hype? Do you think it's one of the best games ever, or at least one of the best you've ever played? Is it an instant classic, as some sources have said? Or is it actually a little underwhelming? Let us know.

Well man that's A LOT of hours put in a "short" SP only game. I can safely say you love it :)
It's perfectly understandable you get burned off. I for one can't stand the same game (regardless how great it is) for more than 30 hours. That's why I have a huge backlog of unfinished games.

God of War III's visuals are nothing short of amazing. I keep playing the first 45 minutes over and over again. Pure awesomeness. Could be game of the year, but its still too early to tell.

But it's the graphics that absolutely steal the show. The cinematography and views will leave a lasting impression on you.
Go get parts 1&2 if you haven't played them yet....and definitely pick up GOW3.
A friend brought over FF13 this weekend, so I got to see him play it for a while. Looks great, but still kinda silly. It's the dialogue. Try taking a shot glass of booze every time Lightning punches Snow in the face. You'll be wasted after a few hours.

while i do enjoy the battle system, and the pretty pre rendered cut scenes, the linearity holds this game back, badly.
i know why they are doing it, for the pacing of the story
but quite frankly it has hurt the overall experience for me. no exploration, no shops, no world map, NO AIRSHIP, up until now the raise spell is useless and it will also be the shortest final fantasy ive ever played.
(yes i know the side quests will lengthen the game but its still not enough.)
Final Fantasy 13 is a good RPG, in terms of the overall final fantasy franchise, it just isnt able to compete with 7, 8, 9, 10 or 12
if i were to give it my honest rating, i would have to agree with you guys here at PSXextreme and give it an 8 out of 10.

I mean hell look at all these games that are going to come out and has come out: Heavy Rain, God of War III, Gran Turismo 5, Mass Effect 2, and so on...
It'll be tough for it to shine through those great games...especially being a sort of disappointing next-gen Final Fantasy.
But again I don't think I'm at the position to say that or be held to my opinion - because I haven't played it.
I mean heck - I would personally think that Yakuza 3 should get a GOTY nomination - when everyone else would strongly disagree...so yea it's all opinions.
In the end we all win don't we?

by your description we should all give up our beliefs and convictions just to win over a few more people.
You can't win over everybody with one game. People like different genre's, so instead of stripping one genre bare, perhaps you should reach others with a different genre if you want their business.

FFXIII has officially become my second least favorite FF game, and my least favorite of the main series next to X and III (the original, not the renumbered VI). Still a fun game, just very disappointing as I got halfway through the hunts, finished up most of the ultimate weapon upgrades, and realized that I didn't care any more, and that there is a serious possibility that I may not play it again.

'Final Fantasy XIII': 25 hours of boredom
By LOU KESTEN, Associated Press | Posted: Sunday, March 21, 2010
‘Final Fantasy XIII’ lands with a thud, with the interesting portions of the game arriving long after most players will likely abandon it.
Associated Press: During the 1990s, the Square brand was synonymous with the role-playing video game. A generation of gamers got hooked on the challenging quests, quirky characters and sweeping story lines of Square RPGs such as "Chrono Trigger," "The Secret of Mana" and, of course, the "Final Fantasy" series.
Over the last decade, though, the Japan-based company - now Square Enix - has ceded the RPG crown to Western developers. Games such as Bethesda Softworks' "Fallout 3" and BioWare's "Dragon Age: Origins" have all the epic drama of Square's classics, while adding grittier stories, real-time combat and free-roaming exploration.
Still, as a gamer who's devoured almost every "Final Fantasy" chapter, I've been eagerly awaiting "Final Fantasy XIII." And it breaks my fanboy heart to acknowledge how disappointed I am with it.
The adventure begins in the floating city of Cocoon, where humans are protected by a mysterious race called the fal'Cie. A rogue fal'Cie from Pulse, the world underneath Cocoon, breaks loose, and some humans are branded as l'Cie, servants of the aliens. They're targeted for elimination by Cocoon's government, but several escape and set out on a mission to rescue a friend.
There are six primary characters, and they are some of the most irritating people ever to appear in a game. There's surly soldier Lightning, cocky stud Snow, whiny orphan Hope and spacey chatterbox Vanille - no one you'd want to have lunch with, much less spend the dozens of hours it takes to complete "XIII." I did grow to like Sazh, who comes off at first as a Chris Tucker impersonator but turns out to be the one sensible guy in the gang. Late arrival Fang delivers some much needed sex appeal.
For the first 25 hours (really), the characters are split into groups of two or three as they explore Pulse. The story is strictly linear, with no towns to visit, no interesting side characters, no off-the-beaten-path missions to pursue. "XIII" settles quickly into a dull rhythm: fight, walk, fight, watch a non-interactive cut scene, fight, save your game.
"XIII" does have its rewards. This series has long delivered on the eye candy, and Square has pulled out all the stops for its first installment on the current generation of high-definition consoles. The landscapes, whether urban or bucolic, are breathtaking, and the character animation is vividly lifelike.
The battles are built on an innovative engine. You control one character, while the others in your party are computer-operated. But you can change your teammates' specialties on the fly, so if you're taking too much of a beating, you can have one character focus on healing rather than fighting. I still miss the combat of previous "FF" games, which let you control all your characters' actions more precisely, but the alternative here is faster-paced and still demands some strategic thinking. And there's an unusually deep assortment of monsters and human villains to fight.
"Final Fantasy XIII" does pick up steam about two-thirds of the way through, as the characters' stories coalesce and the action branches out beyond the straight-ahead path. Unfortunately, I suspect many players - especially series newbies - will lose patience long before then.

I have said in my previous post, if the similar kinda of mechanism is used for FF15, I will never play FF game again. (i will give another chance for FFv13 for the fact that they might have towns and exploration)
GOW3 is the best action game on PS3 and GOW series is the best action game ever made in video game history, there is no doubt about it.
In the end, there are only a few games I TRUELY cared about this gen on PS3: MGS4, Demon's Souls, The Last Guardian, and GOW3 etc, it represents the very best of video gaming, nothing more to be said.(sorry, I am not a fan of FPS or shooters in general, so dont ask Killzone, Resistance, Uncharted, etc, MGS is the ONLY exception cuz it is NOT about shoot)

Slow down?
What? Sorry to bust all of your pre-conceived bubbles there, but.....
#1. nowhere in that post did I ever mention any opinion on FFXIII's story, and especially since I've already clearly stated that I DON'T own it, therefore haven't played it.
The only comments I have ever made about FXIII, was actually geared towards SE's and their shady willingness to steal of 1/2 the games content to either sell back as more money-making DLC, or to be even more lazy by re-using it & just tacking on another FF number to it.
Also, by most of the posts already made by others here so far, most of their comments purely "DO" show that FFVIII "HAS BEEN" noticibly chopped up & is now sorely missing almost all the major key elements of the past FF"s).
SO FYI, as for that article I included, I just posted it so that others could take partake whatever they wanted from it, or add their own thoughts/revelations/ comments towards it, and not towards me.
#2. And as for buying used games, to each their own.
I'm a gaming collector so there's nothing gross about it.
Unless of course, you call having close to 1500 games a gross thing to have, or not having to turn to into a pauper just to support my major enjoyment of games collecting.
(And BTW, I'm quite sure nobody uses a gaming disc for their masturbate techniques, especially when I assume a Hoover would work much better)
And, NO, I don't need to try either one!!!!!
FYI, I examine all my future purchases of discs first(that's 1 of the 2 major reasons I rarely buy used games on-line) & I'll only buy mint(or near mint for hard to find games).
And then I either polish & clean my discs before they ever get near my machines.
Matter of fact I re-clean all my discs every single time before I'll even put it into my machines. And I don't ever leave my discs in the machine when not playing either, so while I've been playing COD WAW a bit here & there over the last few days, I've re-cleaned my disc each time just before inserting it into my old 60 gigger.
#3. So E'nuff said?

My feeling is most people who've been burned out on it simply blew through the game on easy, not taking the time to appreciate every detail that came together in this masterpiece of a game.
And if someone says they've played 50hrs, in the last week and are burned out, well duh. That's more than 8 hours a day!

Can't believe I bought Bayonetta for the PS3 and thought the graphics were good. God of War makes them look like they're from a PS2.
Glad I played Heavy Rain recently because the Quick Time Events in GOW are easy now!
Don't think I'll need to use my tongue in God of War.
Not sure if it will get Game of the Year though. Still a long way to go and I would give it to Heavy Rain at the moment becaus it was so innovative and immersive.

it feels like $E were going for storytelling over compelling gameplay, and it really shows and its hurt the game.
previous titles went for a mix of everything, a little of this, a little of that.
previous titles were jack of all trades master of none, where XIII is the jack of a trade and master of a trade.
up to you which ones better, me personally i rather have 5 brilliant things and none perfect ones. appose to 0 brilliant things and 1 perfect one.
as for GOW3 only thing that disappointed me is the camera, controls can be extremely unresponsive and the pacing.
the camera well hello this is a platformer how the fu** am i suppose to jump from a area to another if the cameras so far away?
the further away from something the harder it is to judge the gap.
ive lost count the amount of times i have died because i thought i was here when i was actually there.
bring the camera in closer, or PLEASE! let us control the fugging thing then id be fine.
controls are really annoying at times, this is where darksiders really took the torch.
in darksiders start a combo you can stop the combo and block or evade mid combo, GOW3 once you start a combo thats it you cant do anything till its completed.
ive lost count the amount of times i flick the right stick and kratos will not evade the incoming attack.
evade.... evade........ evade...... EVADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
than i die because he did not evade.
GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
than theres the pacing, the game starts off with your jaw on the fu**ing ground, i was drooling so much the carpet is as frilly as willy masons afro!
than for the rest of the game, its well not slow but not exactly on the same level as that.
uncharted 2 hit the nail on the head, it started off just as epic and as soon as the wow factor, the amazement started to fall they had another part to boot it back up there.
GOW3 has none of that, it gives you one adrenaline shot than thats it no more for you junkie!
every part up to the E3 demo was really good, i would not change a bit of it.
but everything after that, well it feels like we went from the speed of light to the speed of sound.
why?
so, yea, i still have to give GOTY to heavy rain, and to be truthful i really cant see that changing.

the opening of the game made me say holy sh*t that is fu***ng amazing ive never seen that before.
but sadly thats the last time i said it.
i was expecting there to be heaps of holy sh*t moments like uncharted 2, but sadly Poseidon was the only one.

Also, I wish they kept the option to change equipment and players during battle... and if only they allowed you to control your players. That coupled with the current ffxiii battle system would have been brilliant.
The leveling up system should just be replaced with the sphere grid imo, it seems like a more linear version of the sphere grid.
Im About 25-26 hours in now and just got to Gran Pulse :) I hope it opens up like they say, i like the way final fantasy does natural worlds (Besaid Island was my home away from home).
The character progression in FFXIII is great, i really wanted to smack Hope back into last week because he was such a hopeless pu**y at the start. I wont say anything more cos i dont wanna spoil the slightest thing.
I wonder what would have happened if the poll was done a little later with only voters who had completed FFXIII in its entirety? I guess we will never know...
I voted for it being great but not GOTY... that might change though.

I admire your tenacity, that sounds like a lot of hard work!
I'm more of a play it on easy just for the enjoyment. I can only ever play for an hour or two at a time (work, family, life etc committments). Suppose that's what the difficulty levels are for.
I am struggling in GOW with the fixed camera. It seems to have been ages since I've played a recent game with one. I keep trying to move the camera with the right stick like Uncharted 2. It's amazing what you get used to.
Congratulations on your perseverance.

GOWIII is action and fun right out of the gate. The hype has been around the sheer scale and beauty of the game and the solid gameplay. So yeah, it's lived up to the hype (if not surpassed it). It's a GOW game with some new mechanics, just as everyone expected, and that's a great thing!

PS: I thought the end wasn't even that bad, even though I assumed it would've been in a different manner, that's probably the main reason I don't think it was bad, the shock that came from it.
At a certain moment, I thought, ohw, it's going to end here, well that's not bad at all, what is everyone complaining about and then it goes on and shaves off a little bit of the excitement. Still not all that bad though.

The end could have been worse but it just sticks out because the rest of the game is so much better. It made me that much more curious what the original plan was that was too much for them to handle at the time. Really hope they get to releasing that.
Annoyingly though my code for the unearthing the legend video doesn't work so I gotta find time to call support about it.

Also, GOWIII is definitely up there! And if Versus XIII somehow makes it's way out this year, THAT will be our Game of the Year! It better be, that's the game that is going to be pushing the limits of the PS3!! But what do I know, it may not, lol. Unlike Final Fantasy XIII, Versus XIII will probably most likley be a much more appealing game graphic wise.
