CVG Lists The Top 50 PS3 Games

Any "Top" list is always very subjective - unless you're strictly going by numbers; i.e., review scores, which isn't any fun, anyway - so it's always interesting to read such assembled countdowns.

CVG ran their list of the top 50 PS3 games thus far and as you can see, last year's award-dominator, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, has topped the list, while the 2008 masterpiece from Kojima and Co., Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is in at #2. We certainly agree with that although personally, I keep flip-flopping those two in my head; it's very tough to determine which of those two groundbreaking games is "better" than the other. Then there's Modern Warfare 2 at #3, which we're really not going to comment on - should've been Grand Theft Auto IV, in my opinion - and Assassin's Creed II very high at #4. It even topped the recently released God of War III and although that may sound a little kooky, I distinctly recall being in love with ACII and saying how it didn't get enough love at some awards shows. It really is a damn fine game and certainly one of the best of the generation. The two Bioshock games also get rated high and last year's challenging and innovative RPG, Demon's Souls, rounds out the top 10.

So, what do you think? I think the only glaring issue is that Heavy Rain is way too low at #12 (it's easily in the top 5, in our minds) but other than that, it appears solid. You might like that Final Fantasy XIII is up there at #15; other sources would've probably put it down in the 20s or 30s.

Sorry... as much as I love Uncharted 2, Metal Gear Solid 4 should be #1 on this list. To me, that was the ultimate gaming experience and I don't think it'll be topped for a LONG time.

I'm just glad that Grand Theft Auto IV isn't #1. That game is incredibly overrated (again, just my opinion).

Oh, and BTW, the Modern Warfare should be at #3 while the second is at #9. The second title was quick and boring compared to the first one.

Flower at #50 is ridiculous. That's easily the best PSN game out there today.

Dante's Inferno before LittleBigPlanet? HA! Who was this list made by?!

MGS4 is hands down the best MGS game thus far, and easily one of ps3's best games.

You really can't go wrong with Uncharted 2 or Metal Gear Solid 4

Oh wow really? There's no way Dante's Inferno should top LBP. That game had many awards and nominees. It even set the standard for Sony's create, share, and play campaign, or something like that. Unbelievable.

I agree MGS4 (which I am replaying now) is a masterpiece. As much as other games are pushing the industry forward MGS4 does that while being a complete masterpiece (for any forum be it movies books etc...) in my eyes.

agree, MGS4 and Metal Gear games in general is the greatest game ever made, and the greatest story ever told in video gaming. period.

also, i am glad Demon's Souls is in top 10, Heavy Rain should be in top 10 too. my top 10 goes like this:

Good to see Demon's Souls in the top 10

I mostly agree with the list, but cringe at GTAIV and any Call of Duty game making the list.

LBP is easily in my top 10

tbh, i think mike jackson and maybe other reviewers there like shooters a weee bit too much (read the reviews you will see what i mean, he actually "misses" the ability to drive a car or shoot a gun in INFAMOUS .....yeah....)

Like it or not, the COD's belong up there. Dante's Inferno is way too high....probably shouldn't even be on the list, along with Mirror's Edge.

These lists are fun to look at, if only to get yourself all riled up.

Assassin's Creed II was fun enough but it has so many bugs and hitches i can't agree it's one of the best PS3 games.

i played a good thirty hours too, and aside from the hellish screen tearing jawknee mentions ( i also despise it) game is really well made, long too was suprised at how long actually for a multiplat...

it sadly had a sh*t load of bugs.
besides the game freezes sometimes i would fall through solid floor than the screen goes black with ezio falling than i had to unplug the system because neither the PS or power button were working.
o and a few times when i was in the Templar lairs i got stuck in walls.
assassins creed 2 was the 2nd best game of last year but sadly it was also one of the buggiest.

Hate to say it but I didn't care for MGS4. I know everyone will be dogging me for saying that but everyone has their opinion. I kinda would have liked to see GoW:III closer to a 3 if not a 2. Bayonetta wouldnt have made my list even if i counted up all PS3 games. Last note, I would have liked to see GoW Collection on there, but I understand that its kind of an odd thing seeings how it was "updated" for the PS3.

I actually did a pre-order for MGS4 got the MGS:O and played it for about 10 minutes and said screw this demo and the upcoming game. I cancelled my pre-order and bought something else. I later borrowed MGS4 to give it a fair chance and played about 10 minutes and didn't like it. It froze up and I said ok that is a sign for me to stop playing it. I would put it on my top 50 list because other people like it alot, id have to say around the 20 to 30ish range. I do like the fact that its a PS exclusive, but not enough to make me change my mind about how i despise its physics and engine.

Modern warfare 2 is like the video game version of twilight-an extremely overhyped and rehashed genre that for an unexplainable reason steals undeserved praise from others who truly redifine and set the bar they make others believe they've reached.

My opinion is completely subjective but fact's > opinions.I feel that on a technical level killzone 2 stands above MW2 on every level:Graphics,single player length and quality,and multiplayer.I'm sure a lot of people will agree.

If MW2 is #3 at a spot others did better then the list is clearly inaccurate from a "Which game is the best at what they do" perspective.Of course,this is just they're opinion....

IMO MGS4 and UC2=An eternal debate for the PS3 crown.

although i will admit, as awesome as kz2 is i didnt really like the multiplaier gametype setup. i think with kz3 they should go back to the traditional lay out (no classes guns on the map) i think all these games going with the class set up is just stealing from COD.

also.... whatsup with not being able to create your own control scheme? that should be available in every game IMO, but so far only midnight club has had it :(

Man I like MGS4 but I could never understand all the hype for it. It was fun, but I feel since 2008 I have played a lot of games more fun then MGS4. So I agree with Uncharted 2 as number #1. But Killzone 2 and AC2 should switch, Heavy Rain and MW2 should switch and Bad CO 2 and GTAIV to me should also switch (just my opinion).

Is it just me, or was resistance 2 not anywhere on the list? And call me crazy but no one has mentioned it on that site or this. Am I the only one who loved that game?

And as far as modern warfare being number three, I would have to say that I liked that game more than most people on this site, but it should not be number three.

I haven't played the Metal Gear Solid series too much as I don't like stealth games, but I will not say it doesn't deserve it's spot. But as far as my top five I have played, I would go

1. Uncharted 2
2. God of War 3
3. Killzone 2
4. Resistance 2
5. Little Big Planet

Again these are the games I have played, so many of the best ps3 games, like heavy rain or MGS4, are not there. I kind of think I need to play MGS4 though because of all I hear about it, even though I don't like stealth games. I'm just not good at stealth. Can anyone tell me if the stealth elements are easier on an easier difficulty?

I love Resistance 2, every time I hear about a new game being announced, I hope it will be Resistance 3. Also, you can play MGS4 however you like too, you don't have to sneak around to beat the game, after all 100% completion actually requires going rambo every once in a while.

I think i'll give mgs4 a try then. I have been debating for a long time, but I guess I just can't ignore the massive amount of respect it's gotten. I actually have it but have been holding off hoping it gets trophies (yes I'm a bit of a trophy whore).

What is up with that anyways, I remember mid last year hearing frequent updates from konami stating that they were working on trophies? I guess it's never gonna happen and I should just play it.

Also, I just thought I would throw out how much I loved Heavenly Sword, that definitely deserved its spot on the list. I don't remember what spot it got but I would place it in the top ten. I need to dust that off sometime and give it another go.

And Ben, I read your review when Resistance 2 first came, as well as just about any review it received, and it got great reviews from a lot of sites, but it seems that the more time goes by, the more people forget how much they enjoyed it.

It seems that they enjoyed it but threw it aside after a few months because of negative fan feedback, which to be honest I don't think a lot of that was honest fan feedback. You see it all the time, great rated games receiving such negative user reviews that you wonder if they even did play it, or if they did play it and sat there thinking, "okay where's the next thing I can complain about."

I also think that it suffered from coming out the same time as gears 2 and the xbox fanboys wanted to steal it's thunder and found anything they could trash it on. I mean even insomniac said they really took the fan feedback to heart, but I don't think that it's as bad as they think.

All I know is I loved it and so did my brother (I don't know many other people who have played it because most my friends don't play games and I'm not big on social gaming i.e. not many people on my friends list).

That's just what I think though. Sorry for the extra long post.

another thing to consider is that mgs4 is a lot different from it's predecessors. It has an over the shoulder view instead of top down view which I think was a big improvement.

Now, before anyone rips into me, I have NOT played Heavy Rain yet but after playing the demo, I can guarantee it in my top 10 after I do play it.

I was going to throw the God of War Collection on here but I figured I'd fill my top 10 with games that were designed for the PS3 and not just PS2 rehashes (it's one wicked-@$$ rehash, though).

And whenever it is released, I can pretty much 100% guarantee that The Last Guardian will be in my top 3.

Yes, Afrika at #5. That was one the most relaxing, addicting experiences I've had on a console ever and my girlfriend and I had a great time playing it together.

Why would you rip me for that? Did you dislike the original game? I personally found the first title to have more compelling locations, a better story and much cooler villains. I loved the entire jungle setting compared to the world-jumping of the second game (even though the Tibet level was amazing). I also found a lot more glitches and hiccups with the second title. I had to pause almost every single video just so the words would match the mouths of the character talking.

Again, that's the problem with these lists. Nobody will EVER agree with you. The person who put together this CVG list is dumb, though. There's NO way Flower and LittleBigPlanet should be as low as they are.

My Top Games in no order:
Uncharted2, LBP, KZ2, Heavy Rain, Flower, MGS4, GTA4, Wipeout HD

I have not played yet:
GoWIII, FFXIII, Batman:AA, Infamous, Demon's Souls

I think it is not possible to establish an ultimate order.
Flower was by FAR the best game possible when playing with my dad. He had his problems with the tutorial of LBP but was thinking about buying a PS3 after playing Flower.
If you are in the mood for a racing game Uncharted2 wouldn't do you much good and so on.

I like CVG. With this top 50 list published I dare anyone to say the PS3 has no games. I'd compare their top 50 to any other consoles top 50 and walk away a happy gamer.

Killzone 2 and Resistance 1 & 2 are too low....And why the heck is Orange Box at 21? WORST PORT EVER MADE. Valkyria should be higher too.

PSXE, you all should do a list like this expect yours would continue to make sense past the 1st 2 games.

Agreed - where the hell is Resistance 2? It should be on the list. And the Orange Box and Bayonetta should be off the list. They may be good games, but they are bad PS3 games and should not make it on a top 50 PS3 games list.

Warhawk, R:FoM, and DeadSpace should be higher.

Just because Bayonetta and Orange Box bad ports doesn't make them bad games or not deserving to be on the list.

On a side note, I'm surprised Blazblue wasn't mentioned after all the recognition it got as a fighting game [and it being considered better than Street Fighter 4]

What the hell are MW2 and GTAIV doing so high on that list with so many other better games on it?

Also, inFamous, LBP, and both Resistances are way too low on that list.

I'm sorry, there's no other way to say it but that list is full of shit. lots of those games just shouldnt be on it. plain and simple.

Dante's inferno? not even close a game of the month, let alone top 50 of a system.

Ibout know this isnt about GOTY... but anywho... Heavy rain should win GOTY for being so daring. It's not just about the game imo, it's what it does for the industry as a whole... If we have stronger incentives for more original games there will be more of them.

these lists are pritty pointless though because as they say one mans garbage is another mans pulp puree!
like i showed a friend of mine today GOW3 and he said meh, i prefer army of two the 40th day.

I'd have to say that obviously a lot of the decisions on that list are questionable at best. As for my top picks, I wouldn't even know where to begin. There are so many that I love and I love them for so many different reasons.

I also find it sad that no one mentioned white knight chronicles. I know it got bad reviews but most people that like jrpgs seem to love it, I know I do.

How do I compare demon's souls to Valkyria Chronicles? How do I compare Infamous to White Knight Chronicles? Comparing Mgs4 to Folklore? I can't even fathom comparing Valkyria Chronicles, Demon's souls, and White Knight Chronicles, and technically they are all rpgs.

I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite. Knowing me one would win one day and a different one would win another day.

Keep in mind that I have not played Heavy Rain, but thanks to demo I know I'll love it too. I haven't played uncharted 2 either. Shooters aren't really my thing so I wouldn't pick Killzone 2 but I can definitely appreciate the masterpiece that it is.

So in the end I'd say my favorite ps3 games are, in no particular order, WKC, Valkryia, MGS4, Demon's Souls, Infamous, and Folklore.

I wish I could chat with someone of you to ask how you picked a number 1. I love all these games so much.

Go Sony and all your cool games.

5.Killzone 2

I am kind of a newer Ps3 owner but I don't think number one on my list will ever change. My firefox theme and ps3 theme are MGS I have always been a fan of the series since MGS came out and I bought it day one, I was like 11.
