Do You Want Kratos To Return?

We've been hearing conflicting reports about the future direction of the esteemed God of War franchise - for instance, will Greek mythology stick around or will we see an all new setting? - but perhaps the big question is, should the main character return?

We should probably clarify that SCEA Santa Monica has said they don't wish to saturate the industry with GoW installments; they have indeed said it's "time to take a break." That being said, we also know the series can't possibly die, so when it does return, should the bald bad-ass we've come to know return for an entirely new story or trilogy? The reason we ask is because it may actually hinge on the gamers... According to ConnectedConsoles citing a recent Stuff magazine interview with SCEA lead animator Bruno Velazquez, it's sort of a wait-and-see situation. Said Velazquez:

"We'll see how the game goes and if fans want to see more Kratos, who knows? Right now, stay tuned."

We have a follow-up question: if they're not going to stick with Greek mythology, how could Kratos return, unless he jumps in a freshly rigged DeLorean and zips to another era...? But let's just say for the sake of argument that they do stay with the Greek premise; would you want Kratos again, or should they try for a new protagonist?

Goddess of war? You might be on to something AS LONG as it is bloody violent and bad ass like God of War. Heavenly Sword just like Bayonetta did not impress me at all so if they want to go that route they better make that hardcore and if the leading lady uses any sexuality to get her way it better end in someone getting decapitated and/or castrated. I'd pay 60 bux for that.

Bayonaise! HAHA :D

Yeah, Bayonetta's just all flashy crap imo
Heavenly Sword is more like God of War where it's actually all BRUTAL action and uses ancient/mythological powers as its basis (in all aspects; gameplay wise, storywise, etc.)

Would be something if SCEA decided to cotinue HS :O

Persoanlly I think the story of his brother was told in GOW3 or atleast put to an end. i think his brother from GOW (that they spoke about in the unlockables) is Hercules in GOW3. There is too many tie ins, and the way Hercules spoke were the same feelings they portrayed about Kratos brother in GOW. So i think that story has been told and we know where that road lead if youve played GOW3.

Hercules is Kratos's half-brother (through Zeus, but a different mother). His full brother had died and gone to Hades, while Hercules was alive. We learn this, when Hercules says, while Kratos was becoming the new GOW, he was stuck carrying out the errands for Zeus's 12 labors (getting an apple, killing the Nemean Lion). Moreover, from reading the scattered notes in the underworld, and from previous installments of GOW's, we learn that Kratos's real brother was already in dead in the underworld, doing bidding for Hades, asking for release to carry out his revenge. Big difference.

Moreover, Hercules was jealous of Kratos's status as GOW, but Kratos's full brother looked up to him, but sought revenge because of Kratos abandoning him to his death as a child.

@Shams

Finally another person who knows the story real well, most people who are "FANS" of the series that I have talked to had no idea of what I was talking about when I mentioned Kratos brother or his story.

Anyways his brothers story would be cool, doing some of Hades errands would be a nice side story.

yea your right. about all that you said. You obviously payed more attention, in some ways. So hats off to you, or someting i guess.

I know that it did say his borther looked up to him but that grew to spite which it also said. Which is where i come off saying i thought that they tied in hercules to fill that void. regardless, for me personally that story should be dropped as Kratos did Hercules no matter what role he really played.

I think they should leave Kratos in body, but not in spirit. I think whatever spin-off they have planned for us should include a Kratos incarnate, but not actually Kratos. For example, if they switch to Egyptian mythology, they shouldn't make a completely different character. Whichever character they make should still be a god killing and godess screwing badass, except he should just be adapted for whatever different mythology they're planning to do.

I should clarify.

Starting from GoWI Santa Monica showed that Kratos was only doing all these missions for the Gods so he could be forgiven for his sins, namely killing his wife and daughter. At the end of GoWIII this was resolved. End of Kratos' story. If they add more on it will feel forced and out of place.

They shouldnt ruin one of the greatest characters and greatest franchises in gaming history just to get another game or two out of Kratos. Do something else, start a whole new story that kicks as much ass as Kratos'. Leave the dead where they are.

Well Kratos has always been a warrior and before he was hunting Gods he was hunting people. I was thinking maybe like a prequel type game. All the stuff before he ended up covered in his wife and childs ashes. A spin off might be cool as well if it is done right but I am leaning towards more prequel type story or something along those lines. Whatever they come up with will no doubt be a winner because they are 3 for 3 now and each one set the bar very high. The only group I have ever seen become that good at what they do and then become super bad has been Metallica lol. I'm sure I will get a thumbs down or two for that. Couldn't resist though.

I hate prequels as well
Kojima proved me wrong though, MGS3....

But for the most part, they're what I call "a waste of time"

Going through the same BS they already explained in the first game (there was this and that and this and that). They already somewhat explain past events in the first game of series. Making a prequel to re-tell what you already told in the first game is meaningless/waste of time.

It's only really good if it's legendary stuff like MGS where story-telling is so deep/engaging.

Anyway, no prequels please!

I say let Kratos go, his story is done. Start in a new mythology and make a new anti-hero.

So, that's settled, now onto the bigger question. What actor on earth could possibly pull off Kratos in a movie? I'm not a fan of his, but the only one that even comes to mind in resemblance would be Vin Diesel. Any ideas?

I say they should do whatever they want to, you dont plan out a trilogy over years and not have an idea of how to extend the franchise at the end, and if you do you won't be in business much longer after that. Santa Monica is in that elite upper echelon of ps3 exclusive developers who tend to hold themselves to a higher standard of quality than others. I have no doubt that they'll find ways of sneaking Kratos in no matter where they take the franchise, be it a reference or a statue or an easter egg he doesn't necessarily have to be a playable character but I would prefer that he would be at some point at least, I mean face it that's too much brutal badassery to just be eyecandy.

Man, I truly hope they can bring Kratos back.

But ONLY if it makes sense...
I really wouldn't want for them to start making prequels (I hate prequels....most of the time)

So bring him back if he can move forward with a brand new plot that places him at a later mythological time in Greece where he would be needed* <---This would be great (though, very hard without creating a lot of new events which don't particularly surround Greek mythology). Wonder how much original mythological gods/characters they could add to the story without making it seem "not authentic"

It's definitely a hard decision

If it's too much for them to decide on; Heavenly Sword would be perfect! SCEE owns the license, I'm sure they wouldn't mind letting Santa Monica beauty up this game and give it an intense and really sharp sequel!

Whatever they do though, would be great

PS: HS2 would be great *pretends they're listening* :)

huhhhh i have a funny feeling were not going to be seeing him ever again.
the gates of hades could not hold him.
the arms of the sisters could not contain him.
he had his vengeance!

has anyone seen the video from the GOW collection?
i have not seen it off there, but i saw it off youtube.
its a video of chronos and gia (i think its her, sure sounds like her) says "its been 1000 years since kratos opened the box" and a hole load of crap after that but the final sentence is "from the depths a new hero will emerge."
so who is this new hero?
and does it have anything to do with the website your sent to after gaining the plat for GOW3.
one things for sure there will be another GOW game which i thinks a massive mistake, no one can live up to kratos no matter how epic they are!
not to mention how could it be a sequel?
they only could do a prequel, which id love to see but this video says a "new hero" so it cant be a prequel.
SA sure love teasing us dont they?

anyone who has not seen that video i suggest to go watch it, its really intriguing and gives you a insight to what happened to zeus and the gods after GOW1.

We could look at this from two different POVs here, one being the fact that Kratos is in fact kick ass and is an interesting and overall great lead character. On the other hand, having the same protagonist could get a bit weary on the mind after a bit, after you have learned his entire life story and back catalouge of events, what else is there to learn? After all, the games prided themselves on story driven plots to entice you for more GOW for each entry. What would you have left to tell about Kratos? This is one place where GTA shines, its a different character in nearly every iteration but is able to tell his entire story in one sitting, and do not mistake this comparison as a which game is better, because it's clearly GOW hands down. IDK, this could go either way for me, and I'm sure others out there have the same itch to scratch on their brains.

Remember, in all 3 GOW, there has been a sex mini-game, so what if Kratos had a child?
The story of the brother would be interesting, and even linking it to the story ( like that's why the Hydra attacked his ship in GOW 1) could prove something

Personally, as much as I love Kratos, it doesn't really matter to me. Whatever Santa Monica decides to do will be kick-@$$ so I'll be game either way. However, with an ending like GoWIII's, you really have no idea where the future of the franchise can go.

On a side-note, who else thinks it was absolutely EPIC to have Kevin Sorbo voice the Hercules in this game? That pumped me up beyond belief!!! =D

Kratos is too good of a character to get rid of.
Why do the great characters keep getting killed off e.g. Solid Snake and now Kratos? Its not what the fans who BUY the games want.

yes the reboot with Kratos' bro would be great & maybe he would face Kratos himself in a final battle LOL.

sorry if repeating but didn't read all the comments because of spoilers (& yet i managed to read 1, aaarrrgh!) i will get mine this week!

I really loved Heavenly sword, nice story from a mythology i'm not used to, so can't expect things to be different & a mixture of both games, even if impossible would have been cool for MP co-op!

cheers!

I'm sure that whatever the folks at the Santa Monica studio come up with will be way better than any suggestion I could come up with. Those folks are truly artistic geniuses and should have complete artistic freedom to do whatever they want.

Kratos is one of the best characters ever created for a video game. SM Studios did end his story though and I for one am very satisfied with the way it ended.

I do not need them to try and shoehorn Kratos into some new story or somehow extend this one with more prequels or dare I say, sequels.

Just start over with a new character in a new setting. Do we honestly think that SM Studios won't create another out of this world blockbuster character? They can and they will.

Exactly! they knew that this was going to be the end of the trilogy, so it's not like they're freaking out about what to do next. I wouldn't be surprised if SM had a new ip in the works, I expect references to Kratos over him actually being in the new game, because I have no idea what they're going to do next.

it's a tough decision, and maybe im just overly sentimental, but still...

if they DO decide to switch it up, they should go with norse mythology, as the pantheon of gods to choose from would be awesome. thor, odin, loki, and all the others, could make for an awesome story. and you could play as a viking and they were probably just as brutal as spartans, raping and pillaging and all.

my logic goes like this:

if still greek mythology background, then return the Kratos. if a totally new setting, then bring a new protagonist. as simple as that.

greek mythology setting without Kratos, it lost the meaning of being titled as GOW; conversely, other settings but with Kratos in it, it does not make sense, it makes gamers feel "did Kratos do some time travel to other space-time"? so both way do not make sense and will damage GOW title.

as i said above, either Kratos with Greece" or new setting without Kratos, both will do, and I prefer a new setting without Kratos.

If we see God of War as a true franchise, and not just a trilogy of a great game, continuation on Greek Mythology may not work. I really had to think about this one. How intriguing would it be if they continue down the Greek Mythology road when we already saw Kratos take everyone out? Literally.

It would be tough to continue a story with Kratos in it simply because they already put an end to his story, literally. What I do see working is introducing a new character, new world, and some how including Kratos in the storyline. Like something tragic happens, a new hero is summoned and they reference on what Kratos has done.

Seeing where I'm going with this, I can definitely see them continuing with God of War. Kratos "f'd" everything up for everyone, so the results and consequences to his actions can definitely create a new world and an awesome story to go with it.

the idea itself sounds good, but I was thinking that the new character would be somehow related to Kratos (not necessarily by blood), and if Kratos is re-introduced, he should be like a character that is either hinted at, a non-playable character, or maybe a minor boss ( since if he survives, and as the new protagonist grows up, he may get a bit old and rusty around the edges),and with the gods gone the protagonist must either reestablish order, gain control, or whatever storyline they choose

So lets make haste with a new and more bad-ass hero/antihero/villain, in a different era, and a totally different setting.

I'd like to see a second-chance resurrection of a mummy, who now want's revenge for the murder of his mother, and all the wrongs done & his families clansmen, with the story shrouded in Egyptian or Babylonian times & mythology.

Then the next catch phrase we'll start hearing could be "Who's your Mummy?", instead of "who's your daddy".

Don't you think fighting Jesus and Buddha would be boring considering they were pacifists? That's like putting Genghis Khan vs Ghandi, complete waste of time.

Personally I would like to see what they could do with Gilgamesh or Enkidu. Since they didn't stick to Greek mythology proper why not go back to the original epic story and bloody it up a bit?

How about using the Olmecs? They don't have a recorded mythology but have bizarre objects like the giant stone heads, jade masks, and the like to make into side missions. Without a set mythology it leaves it open ended to create gods. The culture disappeared @400BC without explanation so a super killing machine destroying their gods and wiping out the population would cover it. They were the predecessors of the human sacrificing tribes so bloody is a given.

I don't know, just want to drop the Greek/Roman god thing and start dabbling in some other regions for a change.

Artistic liberties in rewriting a drama or parable is one thing, and making disparaging caricatures for the soul purpose of ridiculing the faiths of other people who don't share your own (belief/disbelief) is quite another. It is quite obvious what your intentions are. Forgive me if I presumed wrongly.

But, if the primary point of your comments was indeed about continuing the GOW franchise, perhaps you would've delved in to the preexisting plot hooks that are already in the story. Perhaps, you would've mentioned other polytheistic mythologies as well. But you didn't.

It is pretty clear that as atheists, you don't differentiate between monotheistic faiths, polytheistic ones, or mythologies. And that I understand. Killing Greek gods - Not offensive - All people you could have offended are dead. That's why you don't see people boycotting Clash of the Titans even though it's Greek mythology like Disney's Hercules. Besides, when was the last time you heard of someone becoming a martyr in the name of Zeus?

Killing modern gods - Offensive - Living people still worship them and find them sacred. That's why people boycotted The Last Temptation of Christ and Salman Rushdie had death threats for The Satanic Verses, because there are people still around that care.

Comparing Greek, Norse, Roman, Egyptian, or any other ancient non-practiced mythology (even though they were religions in the past) to current religions shows a lack understanding of the difference between was and is. Besides, asking someone to respect your point of view that it's okay to use all religious figures in violent games because of "fair is fair" but not respect that someone feels it's inappropriate is hypocritical. Don't ask for your view to be respected if you are unwilling to do the same.

Shams first response was stating that the topic was about "Bring back Kratos" and if you wanted to discuss the merits of religion vs mythology to start another thread as a hint that you might offend someone. What was the response? Instead of just an, "Oops, sorry if I offended anyone", out came, "How dare anyone find me making comments that their religion considers blasphemy to be offensive!" Most people if they offend someone unintentionally apologize and drop the subject, your need to justify yourself shows that it was either intentional or you chose to not accept responsibility for make a comment that could be found offensive.

I took it as a joke at first when you had the "Flying Spaghetti Monster" (spellcheck next time) but after you repeatedly found the need to defend your point of view I decided otherwise. Open minded does not mean not thinking like everyone else and feeling superior to those that do follow the norm but thinking for yourself while still understanding and being respectful towards the viewpoint of others.

Now that I've put my two cents in, can we drop this asinine banter and focus? If the developer doesn't want to take the chance of ruining an awesome character by putting out a game that wouldn't live up to expectations then let them start over. Better to be disappointed with a new character than an established one, that's my opinion. Movie wise, remember what happened to Batman and Superman when they made one too many movies?

HELL NO...if Santa Monica couldn't think of anything new to do ,story wise, in GOW III, what makes you think they will be able to make another Kratos focused GOWIII with a good story. We will just be getting the same game again with an even more stripped story. Thats been the story with the GOW series, I was story focused, II was a little less story focused, then III was just...well you get the point. I think I am one of the few people who believe GOWIII story was unsatisfying. Come on, he just kills himself and doesn't say anything. If you aren't paying close attention, you would just think he killed himself just to kill himself...Terrible way to end a great game and series. So my final answer is Yes because even though the story has fallen apart overtime, I think they can redeem themselves by creating a game that really answers all of my question (Who is his mom?, Why does Athena want that power so much?, How is Zeus Kratos father?, What happens to Kratos in the afterlife? etc.) GOWIII left me with so may questions, well I guess that is what happens when you focus on action, rather than the story...just ask Michael Bay.

Thank goodness I finished GoWIII last week or I'd be completely pissed at you for your spoilers FM23. Talk about disrespect for the gamers who read the comments here. Not to mention, your ability to understand the GoW series is seriously lacking.

Anyone thinks that GOW3 is hard as crap? I keep dying and it is becoming annoying!!! "Hard" on GOW3 is the same as extreme on any other game....

If I get the Titan mode trophy it will be one of the trophies I have that I'm proud of. It's tough as Hades.

***SPOILER***
According to Greek mythology (and almost all religions) there was a flood like the one caused by Kratos when he kills Poseidon, that kills all mankind, except for about two people. So it is possible to continue the series, but in a destroyed or recuperating environment. Not only that, but supposedly it was the god Chaos that created all, so maybe he helped out Kratos when he dies at the end as a thank you for spreading some of his own chaos. I think that if they make a GOW 4, Kratos should be only hinted at, or a boss fight (and no you don't kill him...he's died enough times already)

NO , imo there is no better tribute to a great game and character than letting it go out with such a bang, that the game will be considered a milestone in game development.

yes i want another "god of war-esque" game , or series, from santa monica, but with a new setting new character...how about the story of achilles? troy would be a nice setting, but PLEASE dont let what happened to lara happen to kratos...let him go down in gaming history in all its unadultered epicness.

@Alienange

Yeah, sorry to everyone who viewed my comments as a spoiler. I just thought everyone who was participating in this forum would have completed the game already, I mean the question is if you want Kratos to return. You can't really know until you experience his latest journey, but really I am sorry for that, but I can't erase it.

Anyway Alienage, trust me I understand the GOW series. Very ignorant for you to say my understaing of the series is lacking, though you don't even know me. You must be happy with a simple story with terrible storytelling. I have played both GOWI and GOWII and I have paid close attention to each games story. When I play games, stories always come first then gameplay. If you compare the storytelling of GOWIII to the first two (mainly GOWI), the storytelling in GOWIII is lacking. GOWI had a simple story, but the presentation and storytelling was classic greek mythology. In GOWIII, there is no narrator and the game is not story driven like the other two in some instances. Now I love Kratos as a character and all the pain he went through in the first game and even the second were severely lacking in the third installment until the end. Yes, they hint at everything and they do provide an ending that closes the series, but they didn't provide a ending that hits home emotionally. No one is talking about how good GOWIII story is, they are talking about how good the gameplay is and I will not argue with that. If you are happy with the way Kratos chose to say goodbye, then good for you, but I like mature storytelling and I was not satisfied, the game should have had a narrator like GOWI. Don't forget, people are entitled to their opinion so please get out here with all this disrespect towards me. Yes I was wrong for giving away spoilers, but you were wrong to say what you said and I bet if you met me in person, you would be more cautious of your words. I am not saying you would be scared of me, but you wouldn't have been so bold to say what you said because I believe and know I can back up my opinion with facts and be able to provide you with multiple story arcs and endings that you may find more interesting then what SM gave us. If not, of course that is your opinion. I loved GOWIII and the story wasn't bad at all, but if I was to do it, the story would have done justice to GOW, Greek Mythology, and Kratos. There is no denying GOWIII is the best game or one of the best games this year, but not because of it story and it anticlimatic ending. If Kratos would have just reflected on the death of his family, his mental torture, his decision to give his soul way, and why he lusted for blood in a monologue before the credits roled, imo GOWIII's ending would have been good if not excellent, but instead our hero goes silent into the night. Don't forget, this game doesn't answer alot of questions, though many are not important, it would be nice a close the chapter with no question like MGS4.

Ever since I read someone talking about Kratos having a child, I was wondering how that child would be at all powerful. Then I remembered that he f'ed Aphrodite--y'know a god. Could produce some crazy mix. And the story of Vengeful Patricide could continue!
Of course, I'd also love to play as Kratos's brother seeking vengeance against the brother he revered and yet who abandoned him.

Wow, what a thread! LOL
GoW4? Who would he fight/kill?

I don't care either way as long as they make another game that plays, looks, and feels like this series.

I like Egyptian mythology too, that might be interesting... "Ra of War"... lots of lore there... Maybe a Mayan 2012 theme? They certainly seem to have spilled a lot of blood. Roman mythology/facts would be sweet! They had bloody moments! Can't be Celtic... few stories known. Norse seems a better fit if not Egyptian because of the characters and lore. May run into trouble with certain licensing from Marvel? There are still some Titans left... and there ARE plenty of unexplored stories in Greek mythology... moreover, there are also other characters to explore like Ulysses, Odysseus... maybe do the Iliad? Dante's Inferno worked like that...

The problem is that other games or movies have staked a claim on things... i.e. Tomb Raider: Underworld, Prince of Persia, Riddle of the Sphinx (I liked this one)or would be adapting your game play to someone else' story/characters... LOTR, King Arthur etc.

If it seems to stay Kratos they would really have to make stuff up!

Greek mythology is my favorite... damn this is a hard choice! Re-read lines 3-5! ;)

I think they should do either another God of War WITH Kratos or do another game showing the origins of Kratos
