Sony Gauging Interest For Third Resistance Title?

For a while now, most have just assumed that Insomniac would unveil the third entry in the critically acclaimed Resistance franchise.

And while that anticipation remains, we haven't seen an official announcement via press announcement and we keep wondering when Sony or the developer might finally lift the curtain. Well, based on a recent survey sent to PlayStation fans, we're wondering if Resistance 3 is indeed a reality or if the team is still testing the market waters. The question asks, "Do you think that there is a future version of Resistance, Resistance 3, being developed?" Now, Insomniac has alternated between the Ratchet and Clank and Resistance franchises for several years, typically releasing every new installment in each series during the holiday rush. Last year, for instance, we saw the excellent Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time and in 2010, we've been assuming that Resistance 3 has a good shot of landing in time for Christmas. Unfortunately, there's really no knowing what's going on based on this survey, although it could be interpreted as worrisome if it's viewed as a "gauging interest" question. Isn't a little late in the day to be asking that...?

We're still hoping the third Resistance drops soon; we may have to wait until E3 in June but it'll be worth that wait. This series remains a PSXE favorite and we still believe R2 never got the respect it deserved.

I'm thinking the whole reason for mentioning RE3 in such a way is because Sony and Insomniac Games want to see if an RE3 should be made, seeing how RE2 didn't sell as much as RE1 {although RE1 was bundled with PS3s and RE2 wasn't...and not to mention, the ending of RE2}, and the advertisement for RE3...you don't advertise something that doesn't exist right ;)?

I personally want an RE3, but I want it released next year; I want it to succeed commercially, not just critically (it's already got that covered, since the first two have ^.^...and we all know IG, they make top-notch quality games!

Because we don't want Halo Reach, Assassin's Creed III, or even another PS franchise like GT ruin its sales, no?

Sonofabitc- I can't believe they might not have even started on it! I too think R2 never got the props it deserved. That game was sickness. It DID need a vehicle or two in it, but sans that it was second only to KZ2. Get to work insomniac, stay up all night if you have to

100 percent agreement. Resistance is never really in the conversation of great FPSs, it seems, and that's a real shame. I absolutely loved my play-through of Resistance 2 and would pick up the sequel in a heartbeat.

The FPS market is just so saturated -- and, some may argue, played out at this point -- that I think Sony may rightly wonder if it's realistic this series will thrive moving forward. I sure hope it does.

Good point Telly, it is very saturated. For gamers such as myself who only get the best, Resistance and Killzone series are the only ones I will pay full price for in the FPS genre.

I get it! as for the saturation of the FPS market.. I love fps, when they are done correctly im getting tired of the POC games that are being put out, and activision draining the life out of COD (it actually was good for a while) but R2 multiplayer didnt live up to the first one at all, it needs to go back to the original fps set-up. (guns are pick-ups on map) I miss that gameplay it seems I have to go play halo for that experiance anymore.

That's strange...didn't we see an ad of Resistance 3 somewhere in Central America during some sort of movie shoot? Are they thinking of canceling it just like that? I really think they shouldn't...although it's true it may not have a fan base as big as Uncharted's or Metal Gear's - it's still a damn good PS3 game. Keep it going.

But then again the question comes up about milking a franchise...is it to early for a Resistance 3? I'm really not sure.

With ALL due respect, PSXExtreme.. Resistance 2 is just CRAP.
I think that's the reason SONY is making the survey, to be sure if people are interested. Well, I wont buy Resistance 3. The Story in Resistance 2 is SO moronic (he he) that there is no way they can fix it. I really enjoyed Resistance: Fall of Man, a LOT. It's a shame that this franchise changed so bad, in important elements like Story. Thanks. Red 5.

Resistance 2 never got what it deserved. From the critics, the gamers, and Insomniac.
The 8-player online co-op was sick. But they never did anything with it.
They changed so much from the first it was lacking. When it came to the health system and the weapons wheel.
The Story was good IMHO. I want to see what ends this trilogy.

I want a R3. But I want Insomniac to do this franchise justice.

Resistance is my favorite playstation franchise, and while I do want an R3, I also don't want a sequel that is anything like r2. I want R3 to be like R1, the weapon wheel was perfect, the health system was also better in the original.
Also ,I want them to put a heavier emphasis on co-op, I liked the little missions they put in R2, but that's all the were little missions. I would really like for them too put co-op into the main campaign, that and the weapon wheel with the original health systems would revitalize the franchise.

Oh and I also agree with the person above who said that insomaniac should revamp the graphics engine in resistance, they graphics in R2 seemed so.....not KZ2 :)

I enjoyed R2 but it was fluffy compared to the first.

I wonder if perhaps Sony is hoping to have the Resistance series match the success of the MW series. There's no reason they could emulate the success if they had the right weapons and the right online modes.

Maybe they're asking questions like that for marketing purposes, if there aren't a lot of people expecting it or interested enough in it to know it's 'supposed to be coming' then Sony knows they need a Kevin Butler commercial. I personally hope its coming, I really liked the co op mode and would welcome a longer co op campaign.

I had no idea people didn't like R2 as much as R:FoM. I thought the second game had amazing levels and locales. The cutscenes were great, as were the voices. And I pumped over 50 hours into the online modes.

Anyway, I thought it was a great game and would buy R3 tomorrow if they had it.

I guess some just didn't like the futuristic/technological advances of the sequel (they wanted it more "natural" like in the first game)

I like technological advances of the chimera. It made them DEADLIER and more UNIQUE

It was a solid game, that's for sure. The story is really well presented. With a better overall flow than the first one that's for sure

I guess it all lies in the departure from World War II setting to "technologically advance chimera America" :P

Oh well, I enjoyed it *shrug*

This to me is sort of like the opposite of what Bungee did with Halo 3 and ODST. Though then again, releasing a FPS on a primarily FPS console is a safer bet then releasing one on a much more well rounded console.

I have both games but unfortunately I haven't really had time to play either of them in entirety, though I enjoy much more what they did in R2 as far as multiplayer (AKA 2 people on one console :D)

sweet, but make this a resistance fall of man, not a resistance 2 ;)
RFOM was the best title out for launch of the ps3, and was the best title available for ps3 until uncharted came out.
resistance 2 on the other hand just plain out sucked donkey balls!
they took everything that made RFOM great, removed it, took everything that made it bad, kept it and went on from there.
not to mention it had enough bugs to rival mercenaries 2!
i always say insomniac are the industries best developers, everything they touch turns to gold, they dont know how to make a bad game.
but sadly resistance 2 proved all those wrong.

on SP there were a few the only one i remember was the arger wielding enemies got stuck in walls.
online though it had so many bugs o my god!
like the orik level i think its called the big guys forget what their called got stuck in the roof.
or another map theres 2 switches you have to activate to open a door where you fight the robotic spider, the game kept freezing.
everyone would hit the switch and the gate would not open.

Well I'm sorry that happened to you, hopefully it was just you though. Cause I know the part in Orik that you're talking about, and I never had any freezing issues. And as I recall I never had enemies get stuck it walls.

But, still a great game.

I agree with you guys at PSX R2 was awesome and it didn't get the respect it deserved at all. I have played it through a couple of times and I really enjoyed it every single time.

I for one will love me some Resistance III... Would also be interesting to see where they take the story from here seeing it ended the way it did in R2... But I still say it didn't get the respect it deserved at all...

resistance 2 was crap - a big dissapointment crappy graphics, online was crap compared to rfom and the coop got too boring after you played it for 10 min.

thats why it didnt get respect and it didnt deserve any respect!

insomniac need to do a hell of a better job with r3 if it should get any success

This was one thing I was extremely disappointed about

Resistance 1 pulled it off perfectly.
Even if they have to sacrifice some graphics quality, that's fine. Just give us a fun co-op story mode (offline and online). Don't really need it online, but offline would be great.

if theyre makin an R3 i like a few things to happen.
Bring Nathan Hale back- i know what your thinkin but he was shot in the head true but earlier in the game Daedalus gave him a big Hole in the chest and he survived that although if they continued w/o him i wouldnt be too disappointed .
Bring back the weapon wheel and post game weapons- seriously whyd they get rid of it. by post game weapons i mean like the Reapers(My favorite weapon in the series) Backlash Gernades, L 11 Dragon etc.
Vehicles in Multiplayer along with some Chimera vehiclesand some DLC Maps for both Co op and MP. Finally explain what purpose the Cloven have in the Resistance series.
Even if none of this were to happen id probably buy R3 anyway. Im a huge fan of Insomniac

Well the Cloven are involved in R:R albeit not heavily. I think that game gets over looked the most. I know that Resistance is primarily a PS3 shooter, but the PSP game was easily one of, if not the best game I played for PSP. Something you could play over and over again, and the interaction with R2 made it so unique it was suboip :)

I thought R2 was a lateral step from R:FoM, but i'd love to see what they do with R3. They kinda took away the WWII feel of the game and a lot of the cool insomniac trademarks like the quick-select, but R2 had a great online co-op and a great feeling of scale in the campaign.

According to their trend, R3 should be the best yet. The first Ratchet and Clank was great, Going Commando was ok, then Up Your Arsenal was amazing. The first Spyro was great, 2nd was ok, and Year of the Dragon was the best, imo.

I'll only consider it if they bring back the co-op campaign like the first game had. I don't play these games solo, just doesn't do it for me. But I had a blast playing through it with a friend of mine. We polished R1 off just before R2 came out so we went halfers on it, booked a weekend to play through it and to our great disappointment... they removed the one feature that made it fun for us. Returned.

What is the story here? The quote John quotes doesn't indicate Sony is gauging interest. It is a clear yes and no question:

Maybe this was just a tease on Sony's part. After all, wasn't a Resistance 3 billboard spotted somewhere?

Either way, I'm sure we'll get an Insomniac game this year.

R2 did not sell anywhere near as it should have, I would pick-up a R3 game. I never got on with the online multiplayer that much but as gumbi has already said the lack of co-op campaign play was a huge disappointment, and I would like to see it return with a third incarnation.

Well I personally would buy and completed this on day one. I preorderd R:FoM, along with the PS3, I preordered R" and completed it on day one in one sitting, Preordered R:R and completed it in the first weekend. This would easily warrant a preorder and probably a non-stop play through. Simply put, I love this franchise LOL. I really don't understand why people get so stroppy at R2, the graphics were great, the story was great, online is great, co-op was fine although a little boring as all you did was repeat the same levels in different orders, but in all honesty, that is my biggest issue with it. I didn't have any bugs with it, and the sooner they bring out R3 the better.

Following on from the other two though, I think it should be set on a different continent, like Africa or Australasia because in the series so far, it is explained that the Chimera are adapting rapidly to the climate of Africa, and they havn't yet reached Australia, so would be interesting.

Also, anyone who loves this franchise and enjoys books (to a certain extent) will also love Resistance: The Gathering Storm. Excellent!

Hmm I also assumed they are making R3 already. R1 was there better overall game IMO and R2 while good wasn't the same. I thought the story was fine but they needed the old multiplayer back, and add the co op camp with it. Bring back the old wheel and healthbar from R1 and ramp up the graphics. Then all that's left is to finish up the story with a great ending. I would also like to see Hale return but not sure if it's feasible. Would be cool if u did come back as Chimran Hale and u play against the Humans.

If anyone remembers back to when R:FoM came out Insomniac said that the game was going to be part of a trilogy, and what they did w/ R2 by messing around and saying stuff like they weren't going to work on it or release it until they "felt the market was ready for it" and such, I think this is nothing more then them messing w/ Resistance fans. Will there be a Resistance 3? Of course there will be, and Insomniac Games/Sony is just yanking our... chains...

I just hope they go back to the weapons wheel of R:FoM instead of that stupidity of carrying only 2 weapons at a time, I enjoy the possibilities of being able to carry a multitude of weapons gives me, instead of the limitation of only being able to carry 2 weapons. I never did finish R2 for that reason, got stuck on a part where I didn't have the "correct" weapon load out and got frustrated from not being able to get past that point how I wanted to. It's one of my biggest gripe about the halo series...

I've been reading articles for a while now. I LOVE Resistance: Fall of Man. I loved how the storyline was setup, how the campaigned played through, the weapon wheel and health system. I loved the way it felt playing through. I loved the black and white cut scenes and the narration style story telling. I'd play R:FoM any day, anytime, anywhere.

I played Resistance 2 and had to force myself to play through. I didn't like how it felt. I didn't like how you only had 2 weapons the whole game. I didn't like how the story was played out. To me, it felt like every other shooter. I preferred how unique the first resistance was compared to R:2.

I want R:3. I will buy it, probably first week, or first day if I have money. My question is, Insomniac, are you going to put it back to the unique style, or continue cloning other FPS games? I hope it will be unique, truly. In the meantime, Resistance: Fall of Man is the only good game for PS3 I own, and will be the only game I play.
