Sony To Charge Everyone For PSN Subscription?

Updated: April Fool's a little early from PS3Clan...and it's gutsy - or just plain stupid - to quote Kaz when it's a lie.  Sony might get upset.  Anyway, y'all know by now but we still need to update, of course.

Original Story:

Sony has often said that although they are planning a Premium subscription service for the PlayStation Network, the basic membership will always remain free. But big business has a way of changing that outlook.

We know the Premium service is coming later this year, although we haven't seen any official plans or details just yet. However, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai may have dropped a bomb we weren't expecting: according to European site PS3Clan, his latest statements say that if you wish to remain a PSN subscriber, you'll have to pay...no matter what. Most of that article through the link is in Dutch but it's the English translation of Hirai's comments that will turn plenty of heads and ruffle a few feathers:

"We are confident the Premium service will differentiate the PSN further from other online services. With the new functionalities the PSN will offer the most complete online experience possible. SCE will further increase sales by offering users new entertainment through the combination of software and the PSN. New functionalities as ‘cross game chat’ and Facebook connectivity, are part of our ambition to grow towards a profitable position.

However, to increase revenues further, we are forced to charge a subscription fee to all PSN users, instead of offering Premium services as an optional subscription. I cannot comment in depth at this time but we are looking at $60 to $80 a year. In return, the full Premium services package will be available to anyone without additional subscription fees. The Premium service will be available in the third quarter of this year for everyone to enjoy."

Of course, it could be a screwy translation but that doesn't really seem likely. It appears they toyed with the idea of an optional Premium subscription but perhaps they were worried that wouldn't bring in enough revenue; hence, they decided upon simply charging everyone a certain fee like Microsoft does for their Xbox Live service. Perhaps they don't need the "free online" benefit to sell PS3s these days but current users likely won't be too happy about the new cost. Then again, one can definitely make an argument that the Network has not only caught but surpassed Live in many areas. Is that not worth $60 to $80 per year?

Well, we're not sure. We'll have to see how Sony responds to this and it'll also be interesting to see the widespread gamer response...

I'm thinking the translation is off. The quote says the premium service won't be optional, and then they say the premium service will be "available" 3rd quarter for everyone to enjoy. It doesn't flow very well...I'm thinking the 60-80 dollars is for premium service and the regular service will remain free.

It totally is. Why would Kaz Hirai talk to a Dutch site? He would probably talk about this with Engadget or Kotaku. I think this is a April fools joke. Also free access to the network is one of the main selling points. Why would they take one of the biggest advantages over the Xbox away? This article is BS.

There's no way in Hell that I'm paying a subscription when that is one of the main reasons I have a PS3 vs. having an Xbox. If I'm forced to buy any subscription, I will be signing up for Xbox Live just because Sony did this. We will see what happens and we will see if I will be buying an Xbox 360 as well.

I'm pretty sure that this is an April Fool's Day joke, along with the removal of the other OS option... Sony would effectively alienate more than 90% of it's customer base by charging for PSN access, and I doubt more than 25-40% of the existing customer base would subscribe to something that had been free for years. They wouldn't generate enough profit for this to make any business sense. But, I've been wrong before...

The removal of the OtherOS is true, and I know the reason why. Frankly all 10 Linux users will be upset, but everyone else needs to know that the removal of OtherOS was not done for the hell of it. There are good reasons that ultimately help keep the costs of games down.

That is irrevelant, I bought the PS3 partly because of linux support. It is completely unethical for a company to remove key features like that after purchase.

@bridgera

Well in that case, your beef is with the nit-wit that tried hacking the hypervisor in OtherOS mode. Sony has always said that they will take whatever action needed to protect the PS3 and PSN against hacking. The EULA you agree to actually contains language that specifically allows Sony to modify the firmware in this manner to protect the security of the PS3 and PSN.

If Linux is of major importance to you, don't update your firmware, your PS3 continues to work the only difference is that you will not be able to access the PSN. The PSN is Sony's network, and only authorized devices are allowed to connect. Authorized devices have to meet strict criteria in order to maintain network security. The removal of OtherOS from PS3s is less about restricting you as it is about protecting the PSN and all the users of PSN. The firmware update is not mandatory, if you skip it the impact is that your PS3 is no longer able to log into the PSN.

Folks, this is what happens when someone tries to mess with the PS3. The PS3 remains secure, but someone tried to open up the security a bit. If OtherOS mode remains and someone does manage to find a way to boot a compromised PS3 into game mode, then the PSN would be compromised. Sony can't allow that, nor would I want them to. PSN hosts financial transactions, and Sony knows this and has a responsibility to maintain the security of the transactions. If someone was trying to break into a bank, we would expect the bank to stop them.

But again, if Linux is so important, you have to choose between PSN access and Linux. I'm sorry if you don't like the choice, but this is what happens when folks start trying to break in.

"Well in that case, your beef is with the nit-wit that tried hacking the hypervisor in OtherOS mode."

No, my beef is with Sony, for penalizing everyone for the actions of 1 guy, rather than actually make a solution that doesn't penalize the legit users.

"The EULA you agree to...."

Also irrelevant. A EULA can contain anything at all and is not binding. A major misconception of a EULA, is that people think it's binding, it's not. I still have rights as a consumer reguardless of any terms in a EULA.

"If Linux is of major importance to you, don't update your firmware.... [then you won't be able to use]PSN."

If I choose that, now I can't play games like Warhawk and MAG. Either way, I loose functionality of the $500 device I purchased, which is a scumbag move to do to anyone after the sale.

Bridgera,

OtherOS mode presents a potential security hole that could compromise the PS3 security and via that compromise the PSN security is also threatened. That is the threat. Sony is preventing PS3s with Linux capability from accessing the PSN, that is the effect of this firmware. You update you keep PSN and lose Linux, you don't update and you keep Linux but yore PS3 isn't a threat.

Sorry, for the vast majority of people this move protects their private information and financial information on PSN, that is Sony's responsibility over and above maintaining Linux support.

You are under the impression that PSN is only hackable via a Linux PS3 with current firmware?

If I can hack PSN via a Linux PS3, this update does NOTHING to prevent that.

"Sony's responsibility over and above maintaining Linux support."

Sony doesn't, and I don't *think* ever has, supported Linux. They allowed for installing of "Other OS". I expect that feature to continue to be available.

You may think it's okay for any company to disable any feature after you purchase a product.

I do not think that's okay. If it says "play on PSN" "option to install other OS" on the box, or in advertisements, or promotionals, I had better be able to use all those options.

You don't have to agree with me on that, you are entitled to your opinion.

@Bridgera,

No of course it's not. But a compromised PS3 that can connect to the PSN is akin to having at least one of the keys to the front door of the house you want to burgle. A compromised PS3 on the network is a security compromise, I didn't say it's the only one (nor did I say it was necessarily running Linux). but you know what, Sony doesn't have control over the rest of the devices that can attempt to get into PSN, but it sure does have control over the PS3.

Sony has in fact supported Linux, merely offering the Other OS option and sponsoring Yellow Dog Linux is sufficient evidence of that.

As I said, you would be better directing your anger at the cause of this change, not the change itself, or Sony.

Actually, I was curious myself. Just pulled this from my PS3 manual:

"Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) does not develop or directly support a version of Linux for the PS3™ system"

By support, what is meant is to directly develop for and release software updates for. I would also be able to call them with infomation about how to use Linux. I don't *think* they ever did any of that. Offering OtherOS in and of itself, isn't considered Linux support.

You are correct about them promoting Linux and alternate opporating systems.

Any network, website, PSN, internet, whatever, is prone to hacking. That doesn't mean we disable operating systems on all computers. That means we find ways to make those networks more secure. There are a lot of ways to do that, Sony ignored all of it by going this route.

"you would be better directing your anger at the cause of this change, not the change itself, or Sony."

I disagree with you here. Sony is responsible for disabling features after sale, not Geohot. It is their responsiblity (or problem) to handle people like Geohot, without disabling advertised features after product sale for all users.

Altneratively, if they really had no other option, it is their responsiblity to settle with their customers, not go about it the way they are now.

I do not want to pay for the PSN. This will severely hurt its image if it has to be paid for, and very few people would pay, I can tell by just by looking at the (soon to be many) PSX members here, for starters.

It would also contradict the PS3's message of "it only does everything"...as free online is a staple in the PS3's many features.

First non-PS2 B/C (for most of us, I know it still exists), the removal of Linux, and now charging PSN?

What's next, mandatory installations for every game =*(?

This would just be a step backwards for Sony if they followed through with it. I know many people who bought the PS3 simply because of the free online play. If that feature was removed, and PSN started to cost even MORE than XBL, that would only detract people from their own product.

Not many people would have paid for the optional service anyways. & with those people not paying for the service, why would the rest of the people get it? Part of the 60-80 fee is for cross-game chat, which they wouldn't use to the fullest extent if not all of their friends have the optional service.

I will not pay that much a year. I made that mistake with Xbox Live, won't be doing it for the PS3. I barely use any online features besides downloading demos and occasionally playing online every now and again. I can easily just unhook my system from the internet without it effecting me, I am not tied to it.

However, if they promise free content with the subscription then I might consider. Like content that premium users would only get, and not just Home material. If they give the premium users free content for games, such as DLC, then I will consider paying.

I cannot believe Sony would do this to it's gaming community. Although from a business standpoint, I guess it does make sense. Although I am very unhappy about it, I am a Sony fanboy because they usually listen to the gamers. I hope they don't go the Microsoft way.

cross-game is such a meaningless feature

It's so moronic for people to be talking s*** when they're not even playing the same game

If people are so bored that they need to talk with someone playing ANOTHER game 24/7 why not get Skype? It's free and easy to set up

What a pathetic comment.

I regularly use cross game chat on my xbox, it's one of the best features of Xbox live.

While I play one game my friends can be playing something else but we can still talk about how each others day went at work, what our plans for the weekend are etc etc you get the point; regular people call that a social life.

According to you though I'm a moron for having such a thing. Grow up...

I find myself looking back at the reverse comparability when I thought "oh no, of course they won't drop that. They invented it and it is only a plus for gamers." And then they did it.

I pray to god that this is a misinterpritation. How could Sony go back on the biggest promise they made to all of us time and again. I feel betrayed even feeling that this could be possible. I swear if this is a joke I will call you bad names Ben. (I wanted to say I'd rip you a new one, but from what I've heard about you I would most likely the one getting ripped.)

I'm so disappointed. I need some time to cry.

But seriousley, I can already feel the collective anger of all PS3 owners. I don't think Sony could possibly make a decision worse than this.

I Wrote:
Hey Ben, Hope all is well. I hate to ask this but have you heard of any rumors about the PSN charging for online pay in June? I'm not talking about those annoying chain letters... I heard this from my local Play N Trade who I am very friendly with the owners but I feel they have to be mistaken.

They claim their Corp. HQ told them they need to start carrying PSN cards because of that but I think she might have heard wrong and they really meant this as a preparation for the premium service coming out in Feb. Anyway have you heard any other nasty rumors like this from any decently reliable source. I can't imagine this being true especially with all the articles that reassure us that Sony cares and they always plan to keep it free. Anyway have a good one and keep up the awesome work.
Thanks,
-laxpro2001

Ben responded:

All I can tell you is what Sony has said, and they've repeated many times that they will NOT charge for online play. In fact, one of the directors of the PSN, Susan Panico, once said they consider it a "human right" to play online for free.

At the same time, it's inevitable that a premium service of some kind is coming (likely with multiple package options), which is why the retailers will start receiving more PSN cards. I will not say for certain that Sony will never charge for online play, but I doubt it'll happen. The premium services are in the works and those of course will be optional.

I bought my PS3 for a few reasons. and one of them was the free online service. Ill admit i dont buy a ton of stuff from the PSN but i love to browse it. but my point is Sony has always said it'll be free. Heck it's even a selling point, and they put it on the box and on the xmb.

They can't really start charging without making people angry. Sure its only $60-$80, but that on top of the internet, and throw in netflix, its still $60-$80 more than usual, and that much more we never expected to pay, a reason why i dont own a 360 as well. Most the games i want for the 360 would be played online, and i dont see paying for live.

anyways im not gonna say i wont pay for it, cus i do like the network regardless if i buy alot. But I wont like handing that money over i'll say that!

It's a joke............right? If it isn't, no more PSN for me. One of the main reasons I bought this console was not to have to pay for online. But I am certain this is a joke; Ben even threw in a clue in there for us: $80 is crazy and we all know that! Why would Sony first say that their network is going to remain free and then charge 80 FREAKIN DOLLARS A YEAR??! It makes no sense.... What's even more suspicious is Ben agreeing with the "mandatory subscription". If it was actually true, Ben would certainly oppose it, not defend it. It's an early April fools trick, don't fall for it guys.

No way. If they would offer the premium for a subscription, I may have done it. I don't play online enough to justify it. But why would they offer a "premium" service for free? Sounds fishy. I spend plenty enough on PSN as it is, and I can't imagine that Sony is that strapped for cash. Well, we'll see, I guess.

I'm gonna go on record as saying that Sony will absolutely not charge for online play or basic network services.

They will charge for other services, but Sony executives at levels higher than Kaz have re-iterated several times that the access and online play is free and will remain free.

This is either a very poor translation, or a very poor job by Kaz Hirai or a pretty stupid hoax. Either way until I see *official* comment from Sony, I will ignore it as stupid Internet chatter. Good god, they only just finished advertising campaigns that used the free online as a plus feature for the PS3.

Ben, I am really surprised you guys would run this without checking it with Sony first. You have to know the kind of crapstorm this will stir up. You can see it already happening in this comment section.

I can hardly believe the idea of paying to play online exists and that people actually believe the paid service is better than the free. It's been free on PCs for years and it's just fine. Paying for the service doesn't make it better all of a sudden... I'm certain Sony sees that.

This better be a joke. I only went with a PS3 because it was free to play online. All my friends have xbox 360s so I can't play modern warfare 2 with them, but the free network makes it worth it. If this is true, I guess i won't be playing multiplayer games anymore. Gotta sell Killzone, Uncharted 2, and Modern Warfare 2 then. Oh well. :(

IMO even though I don't see this happening, if they were to force us to pay, then what if they took the money we had to pay and gave it us as credit we had to use in the psn before it expired a year later?

I end up spending a bunch in the PSN regardless so it wouldn't affect me too much

My guess is that there will be a premium and free service. I hardly play online games anyway, but if this does happen, I will ONLY play RPGs from now on. And if action and adventure games don't make it past the 20 hour mark, then I'll be buying them used.

Wow, so many comments already but um ..I'm sure all of this has been said above, but I really don't see this happening. I don't care what was translated, the majority of people don't read these sites or keep up with gaming news. To just have all of them lose their PSN including friends list, Home, PS Store, web access etc overnight (whenever it's released or w/e) is just nonesense. Everyone I know that has a PS3 is mostly casualesque and would be shocked to know they will lose these features. I do want to say one thing though. I would like to pay for a psn service from Sony, but not out of necessity because I would lose my current service, or because we all would stop getting demo's (even if Sony says our content will remain the same, we would notice a quiet drop off of content most likely) but because we would get new features that would enhance our experience that "feel" like they would be worth an extra $50 a year. I'm not sure what type of features exactly, but something that is completely new to us (forget cross game chat) that make me feel like it's a must have feature that would make gaming even 'more' fun.

You guys are cheap asses. You pay $60 for games that almost always cost $20 cheaper on PCs. You spend who knows how much on DLC (honestly how many of you bought that RE5 DLC?) but heaven forbid Sony chooses to charge you for using their service that currently offers quite a bit.

I've loved every gaming product Sony has produced and I'll gladly help support them by dishing out a few dollars each year. I'm hoping this news is TRUE, I see it as a step in the right direction and a way of expanding the PSN content available to us.

No. Heaven forbid they rip the main reason they talked me into going ps3 away from me. Honestly, I would have went with Xbox because it is American. But I liked the idea that Sony was offering free online stuff. Yes, I spent $40 last week on the PSN on things I decided I wanted. There should always be a free offering that includes all I bought the system for. Give me a choice, and I may upgrade, depending on what you're offering. Heck, I bought Core for a year as worthless as that was. Sony needs to know that you can't advertise something to sell units, then change it up once you have your placements. It's called "Bait and Switch" and it's illegal for a reason.

So, we fork over even more money after paying for their games at $60 a piece, buying premium themes and PSN games, downloading demos that LEAD to us BUYING their disc based and PSN games, buying content on Home, buying and renting movies...the list goes on and on. So you would like to take all those things you can buy to help support Sony, and then slam a fee that you are FORCED to pay in order to get into the PSN and buy optional games, videos, and other content, as well download Demos that were free to try in the first place? It sounds to me like you're spoiled rich. Just because you may be rolling in piles of money doesn't mean we are. All the users of PSN already pay Sony loads of cash for a LOT of media, and you're all for paying to pay for that media? Listen to this again..."Paying to PAY!!" 3 problems with this

1: More than 1/2 the PSN population will get pissed and change systems (especially those with more than one account...me included)
2: The PS3 system will drop in both sales and value
3: The PSN store will die almost instantly due to lack of sales

Make an optional premium acc. with special add-ons, demos, and stuff that wont be released to the rest of the free users for a few more months or something like that.

Which is saying a lot since game-wise I mainly prefer JRPG. I'm not building up anything for Xbox, just stating that PS3 only really won me over by a SMALL margin. Free online play was one of the biggest factors.

I've heard rumors about this for the past 3 months. I think this would have been a viable move for Sony had the APOCALYPS3 fiasco not occurred. Their handling of that situation hurt their PR cred with a lot of people I know. People can say that the two issues are completely unrelated but they are consumer relations wise. How would Sony handle a PSN outage with paid subscribers? Would they correspond through tweets like they did with the APOCALYPS3? Would they reimburse you the days that the servers were down? It would be folly if Sony decides this late in a console cycle to charge for what most consider an inferior online experience. I definitely believe it would dissapate all momentum that they have gained in the past 8 months.

APOCALYPS3 had nothing to do directly with the PSN. Most of the PR criticisms on that were irrelevant. Really, it was more gaming sites posting outdated information and highlighting the exaggerated claims of a PSN crash (which it wasn't) and never updating their information, or doing so exceedingly late and not putting nearly much emphasis on the actual problem. I downloaded PSN games on my PSP without the network missing a beat.

A set back. Yes. Particularly relevant. Not so much.

That said, I'd be pissed if they tried to charge for PSN - by which i mean, done playing online (which i don't do much anyway).

They won't be able to pay for this, either due to no money or no credit card. It would only hurt Sony, and it would be immediately apparent with much lower psn sales in all departments. Not everyone would pay for this service obviously. I believe it would be closer to hardly anyone.

While I think everyone should have to pay for the service regardless of content they use I think the basic cost per year should be significantly lower than LIVE.

you charge everybody Sony for online your going to lose so many supportive customers seriously will. your probably lose sells and 60-80 dollars isn't worth it, unless I'm really getting something for my wallet that's better than xbl offers. which brings up they charge everybody and xbox fanboys will eat up these sh** like crazy saying you have to pay now haha etc etc. Sony you do understand people like how its free to play online, it will suck having to go online only knowing you cant play with your friends now cause you have to pay. its the reason i don't play xbl really only get the 1 month thing ever so often. hate i have to pay to play a game online were i just spent 60 dollars on the game now going to pay way more just to play it online screw that. i don't care if have to pay for etc feats like if home had a fee, or using cross game chat when ever psn gets it, etc. charge everything for all i care as long as i can play my game online free im happy camper.

A move like this would make the ps3's lifespan seem like that of any legendary band from the 70's, They start out kind of slow and then they release a few outstanding albums, after their name gets big though they either break up due to a greedy singer, die in one big airplane crash, or just whore out their band till no one cares because all their new albums are made only to cash in on their name.

If Sony does this, then we'll just have 2 XBoxes. I hope that if this happens, they lose a lot of money and get rid of the fee before they go bankrupt. Really, Sony, if you think this is smart, you're the most idiotic company in the world. But still, I wont believe this until it happens. Besides, I'm getting games to play for the story anyway, so it really wont hurt me much. But it's the fact that they're taking something like that way...it's gonna kill them, and I think they might deserve it if they force the price down people's throats.

I've been playing RPGs since the late 80s, don't even try to imply open word gaming is beyond my scope. Do you own every FF game in brand new condition locked away in a glass case?

Versus is going to be even better? I love how you make absurd assumptions based on almost ZERO information. Using your logic FFXXIV is not going to be as good as FFXXIII.

JustCause2 is simply shooting and "flailing" things around...eh? Then I guess every movie ever made is just a script and a camera. Admitting that you put at most 5minutes into a game and then having the nerve to describe it as if you know anything about it is hilarious.

When Sony was rumored to be removing the BC in the original PS3 models, I said time and again that I thought it was a suicidally stupid move by Sony. I still think it was. I think it slowed adoption of the PS3. But here we are with 35 million or so units sold, so I guess I can be right, and they can too. But I was wrong, Sony did remove the BC, and I was completely convinced on the basis of logic and common sense that they would not remove it.

Well if this is true or not I can't really say. But if they do charge for it it won't really bother me that much never really used PSN that much anyway. Mainly because of how expensive bandwidth in our country and also the lack thereof so to speak.

But people that now all of a sudden get their panties in a knot and saying they will ditch PS3 if that happen should grow the h3ll up.

So you are willing to give up on the Uncharted 2's, Heavy Rain's and GOWIII's just like that? Well fine go get an Xbox then and pay $50 per year for online anyway.

You seem to somehow forget that Sony untill recently never made a profit on any of their consoles made... They lost for years on any profit just to give us the PS3 as cheap as possible. I think the least we can do is support them when they need us now.

If they have to charge so they can give a great service and give us the best online experience possible then I am willing to support them. Even if means paying $5-$8 per month.

I mean EA wants to charge $15 per demo now but yet Sony charging $60-$80 a year is an issue???

Okay, after contemplating this for a bit, i think a fee would be a net benefit for all of us in the long run. Under 4 conditions.

1. It has to be cheaper the LIVE.
2. Those who don't wish to pay should still free access to online play.
3. Those who don't wish to pay should still have access the their download history.
4. Those who don;t wish to pay should still be able to access their Netflix streaming.

If those conditions can be met along with what ever new goodies Sony pull's out of the bag...I'd pay. >.<"

huh isent it funny how there minds are so easily and quickly changed?
i remember just after E3 i think it was last year jack was asked since the ps3 had a price drop will they be removing any features like they did previously with the USB ports to cover the costs, and suggested maybe the other OS feature would be removed.
than jack replied nothing will ever be taken out of the system from now on, were focusing on adding features not removing them.
than here they are not even 6 months later and good bye linux!

even BC.
father ken kicked up such a stink and really stuck it into the competitors when the ps3 first released, than they remove it like its no big deal.

and now with PSN.
ever since the ps3 released sony have been adiment and always hammered in PSN would be free, like it was federal law or something.
and now they are changing it.

ive said it once, twice, 3 times and ill say it again.
the day sony charge me for acsess to internet i already paid for is the day my ps3 goes on ebay.

i absolutley hate society these days, companies have become so fu**ing greedy its not funny.
making enough cash to buy a bently is no longer enough, now they need enough to buy 4 of them.
soon they will be charging us a small fee if we want to save our games, or a small fee to power the bloody system on.
i already paid for my ps3, i already paid for my internet, so i should have accsess to every feature advertised.
you can not advertise a feature than remove it, that is called false advertising and is illegal!
some one should take sony to court over this, shame i dont have the time nor money otherwise id be first in line!

what happened to the good old days where customer satisfaction was a companies number 1 priority?
these days companies could not give a royal a$$ about their customers, as long as their wallets are full thats all they care about!

How about you wait for an actual statement from Sony instead of an auto-translated comment published in Dutch? You know, before you actually take your burning torches and pitchforks and do some damage, it might behoove you to check your facts.

I cannot believe how fast people jump to conclusions on absolutely no actual information these days. It's like the whole health care 'debate' in the US. Regardless of your politics (if any) the health care debate in the US has been dominated by lies, falsehoods and hyperbole that served to whip people up into a frenzy that is so out of proportion to the actual legislation that it's almost laughable. It's so bad that even trying to point this out in a calm manner is enough to get you branded a socialist. I guess stopping and thinking is a socialist trait now? Morons.

People are so willing to believe what they want to believe that any information, no matter how poor or unreliable is taken as the gospel truth and suddenly people are all emotional and irrational and maybe 1 out of 100 stops to think before reacting, the other 99 are chanting slogans and trying to storm the winter palace.

I don't know what the solution to this is, but it's sure as hell a big problem.

For once people, please, stop and think this through, look for the logic, and wait for official comment before reaching for the torches and pitchforks.

I live in the South, in most small towns there are usually more than 20 different Baptist churches, each claiming to be Baptist, but each being segregated from the other, and each having some slightly different view from the other. Each being unable to discuss their differences in a rational manner.

Oh, I'm *more* than aware. The US is going to hell in a hand basket, and if I had to put a reason on it, I would put the collective stupidity and irrational, illogical minds that simply cannot stop for a moments thought before reacting right up at the top of the list. People don't listen, discuss or debate any more. They rant and rave and talk over people. A pity really, a wasted opportunity.

The more I look at this the more I mull it over the more it seems to be a terrible translation from the Google translation and the original article which of course translated Kaz's original remarks in English into Dutch for the Dutch readers. So you have a double translation which immediately renders meaningful automatic translation problematic.

The more I read his quotes the more I get the sens that he was saying that the premium service will be offered as part of PSN and that to get it you pay a fee. However, while we might take that as meaning that the premium service is an extra and everything else remains free. By the time it's been translated into dutch and then auto-translated back to English, the construction of the sentence could easily lead to subtle qualifiers in the language to be lost. Si in stead of the implicit meaning being that premium services are extra, but part of PSN and you only pay for them (the premium services), it comes out sounding like you're saying everyone has to pay and the whole of PSN goes premium.

Apart from anything else, what in heck is the point of calling it premium services if it is in fact the defacto standard service? It's clear from a linguistic point of view that a premium service is extra, over and above the standard. The two are distinct and you pay for the Premium elements.

I don't know, I just do not believe that the translation is accurate, something is definitely being lost in the translation.

Wrong or not what I took from it was 2 different fees. One for basic PSN service and another more expensive fee for Premium service.

PSN is a single service. There is only one PSN we currently have premium content and free content. I don't see the problem here, nor do I see any indication that this is a fee to be charged of all PSN users. The language that the translation at google renders is extremely poorly formed and misleading.

I won't comment further about the substance of this until I hear/read something from SCEA, SCEE or SCEI in English.

And if that is the case, then the core user, who should not be subjected to this "Premium", should retain the "FREE" ability to play their games of choice online and with buddies. It would be a win-win situation for everyone. Which I believe Kaz Hirai spoke off and was made into an article on this website.

And they do. To download DLC, you must pay, to download PS1 classics, you must pay, to rent/buy movies, you must pay. I don't see how Sony is losing out on any money, when most of the things we could want on the PSN, we have to pay. Now a Premium that costs up to $80 would have to be a good premium, not just some cross-chat feature and demos before everyone else. I'm talking stuff like you get access to some unlimited stuff, and to keep that, you must pay. It's like getting a Magazine subscription, you pay for a year, and you get the magazines and all it's content with no additional cost. Pay once a year, get all the stuff you want. I say that's pretty fair.

OK, look folks, last comment.

PlayStation firmware updates are handled through PSN, PSN has to be free for that. There are a huge number of existing applications that already give free service that would either be rendered useless or require users to pay. Home is free, you only pay for the clothes and the drinks. These are all things that are here now and changing that would be nigh on impossible. The amount of user resistance would be immeasurable. The damage that just this rumor is doing is incredible. There is just no practical way to stuff the genie back in the bottle. Basic services remain free, premium services will be charged by subscription. End of story, until advised otherwise by Sony itself.

Highlander,
Well, your thinking would go along the same lines with what that earlier PSXE "premium Service" article" also said, which was posted a few months back.

If I can remember it right, it said there would be 3 tiers to the PSN service....

The 1st tier would be just what you already have now, and it would remain free.

The 2nd tier would include some premium services, and it was suggested back then, to be around $69.99.

Then the 3rd tier would include even more/other assorted/ premium content, and be around $89.99.

Now with that said, I DO think(and surely hope) this IS a bad translation too.

But if that does happen, I don't do multi-player modes, so except for missing those free game demos, a few game trailers, & the few trophies I might get that still need syncing up, it would certainly be bye, bye, PSN,

And then I'll just use YouTube to check for all my trailers & game-play demos.

I don't buy Live for my 360, & I'm certainly not going to start paying Sony, especially for what's always forever been advertised as "FREE" content.

Anyways, only time will tell, and we've only got a couple more days to sweat it out, before I know whether to start handing out the torches & pitchforks.

And BTW, EA is another one who can shove their thoughts for any new "Pay for demo's" service right up their ole Moon Pies too.

Well I guess I pulled something different out of it, but like I said: It's that time of year again. I just take gaming news like a grain of salt. I don't think Sony would charge, and honestly if they did, I wouldn't pay for it unless that premium cost including unlimited downloading of all PSN content. $60 - $80 a year would seem pretty fair then. I could watch all movies and play or do whatever I wanted. Otherwise, no I don't think it'll happen. To much invested and to many people who own a PS3 based on the word "FREE". It's only logical that people would say "Hell No" to the PS3 if it's gonna cost them so much to do what is advertised as "Free" already. People aren't stupid. Especially in these times.

So this coming up would make a lot of people think otherwise. Use logic. I said I was for unlimited downloads, would be fair for me having to pay such a high price. Games are still a rather cheap hobby to have. Just going to the movies with the family can cost $100 on one trip. People blow money in so many ways, to save money they stay home and entertain themselves. A few extra dollars for using the PSN will seem rather fair in a world where people buy DLC already on the disk (RE5).

No harm done, I sometimes come across as a jerk, I won't lie.

I agree about the movie thing, which is why I have connections. I understand people all don't have that. Then again going to the movies is supposed to be a fun experience and we all don't do it all the time, only when we want to see something we like. I agree with the on-disc DLC, that is a load of garbage, then again that is the developer doing that to the consumer. This premium could be beneficial to people if it offers some "unlimited" things, especially to those who want to stay at home with their families and be entertained, but I can understand that not everyone is that way, and it can upset some people. When I worked at Gamestop, I would upsell the PS3 because of it's free online gaming feature. The xbox can be very expensive to a customer, and the PS3 is very cost efficient. You get everything in the box and most of all you can play games with family and friends for free. It sold to people very well. This mandatory "premium" would not go over well with a lot of people. Especially those who invested early. Future purchasers will shy away when they get news of a price tag on top of another price tag and you better believe Microsoft would take advantage of that.

Think about it now, they have a 360 core for 199.99 and you can add on to it later. Sure we all know it's scam and it's crappy, but to consumers who can't afford 299.99 immediately it's very appealing. Stacking $80 dollars on top of a 299.99 system will not sit well with people. It just wont.

OK, look, I know I said no more comments from me, but I wanted to share this with you, hopefully it will help. It shows that as far as SCEA is concerened, what is free, remains free. In fact it's 'key'.

Here are a couple of quotes (no translations required) from Jack Tretton - head honcho of SCEA - in a interview on 3/20/2010

“As far as a subscription service is concerned, we’re very proud of of the offering we have for consumers for free. There is no question if we think we can come up with a compelling experience that will warrant an investment from consumers that’s something that we’d consider, but that its not anything that we have … to announce.”

and when asked about the free service and whether it would remain free, he said;

“No I think that’s the key. We already feel we brought a lot of value to the consumer… but until we feel we have something, like PlayStation Move, that justifies an investment, we aren’t going to come out with half cocked technology or product offerings.”

Here's a link to the original story,

http://playstationlifestyle.net/2010/03/20/tretton-says-premium-psn-service-would-be-justified/

First he says they'll be charging everyone a fee, then he says "the full Premium services package will be available to anyone without additional subscription fees." That makes absolutely no sense.

Whatever. I'm sure not paying for it. I played a few hours online the other day and it was like being on a junior high school playground, except everyone was ten times more asinine and childish because it's all anonymous on the network. I'll miss my free demo's a bit, but oh well.

This may change my plans as far as getting a second PS3. I was thinking of getting the 250GB model, but if I won't be able to download movies and TV shows without paying an additional $80 a year just for the privilege of browsing through their inventory, then I guess the 120GB model will do just fine. And it saves me another $80 bucks because I won't have to get that wireless router I was thinking would be so useful. And no more need to download their buggy firmware updates.

Thanks $ony!

Oh wait, when I click on the link to the original article, it says April fools.

Ahem...never mind.

I sure hope Kaz takes some of that sybscritpion fee money and upgrade the PSN because I get randomly disconnected when playing online !

I also hope they find a way to stop people from disco glitching on games like Madden 10 and NBA 2K10 because it seems everytime I play online and winning someone pulls this stunt on me and I end up with a loss when I should have won the game !

I h8 to admit it but from wat i've played i feel lik xboxlive is still better, its just the headset chatting is so much easier and on the PS3 its sorta a clunky add on that hasnt been implemented well and thats always bugged me. Does anyone agree with me on this?

That one is very believable. Removing the OtherOS option would plug a potential security gap while affecting only 10 or so bearded Linux users. It's not like all those PS3 clusters running linux in academic institutions are either significant to Sony's business or interested in updating to the latest firmware.

No, not a good joke. This was a hoax. For it to have been an April fools joke, it would be customary for it to happen, in April. In fact if I remember my customs right anyone trying to pull of a April Fool's day joke early or late (i.e. not on April 1st) is in fact the fool. PS3Clan have earned the ire of the PS3 community, they most surely deserve it.

Sony isn't removing anything from anyone. You have the option to decide for yourself what to do. Firmware 3.21 is not mandatory, you have a choice. If you want to keep PSN access you need 3.21, if you don't, or find Linux more important to you, then don't apply the firmware update.

When you present someone with a choice of which features they get to use, you are taking away something from someone. You can't tell me "Sony isn't removing anything from anyone."....

.... then deny me access to the Linux parition on my PS3, or deny me the ability to play Warhawk (online only game).

Both are things I was of the understanding that I could use when I purchased my $500 PS3.

Companies aren't typically allowed to remove functionality AFTER purchase like this.

The problem is that circumstances change. Had the Hypervisor hack not happened, had the system security remained intact, then this would be unnecessary.

What would you have Sony do? Leave the systems potentially vulnerable so that the minority of users who make use of both the Linux and PS3 functionality are satisfied? I'm sorry, I understand the dilemma you're in. However I also see that Sony were faced with two alternatives and chose the one that hurts fewer paying customers.

The honest truth is that your PS3 continues to work as it does now if you do not update to 3.21. Nothing is taken away from you. You paid for your system and your games and you can play them. The truth is that accessing the PSN is strictly controlled and if your system doesn't beet the terms and conditions, you can't access the Network. That still doesn't take your system or anything on it away from you. Sure it cramps your style, but Sony are not taking anything away from you.

Sony is not taking any functionality away - they leave the decision up to the user, the update is not forced onto your system, you have to agree to it. The firmware update is something YOU have to initiate in the full knowledge that it disables Linux mode for security reasons.

"What would you have Sony do?"

I would have Sony find a better solution. They are not a bunch of mindless weeklings that are incapable of finding legitimate solutions, let's not act like they are.

"Nothing is taken away from you."

Yes, it is. Either my Linux partition Xor PSN access to play games that are online only, such as Warhawk.

Posted this above, but I'll post it here to.

Guessing that's why it's taking them so long to create the service. Hoping that E3 sheds some light on all of it.

ROTFLMAO!

Well, I guess that PS3Clan are ashamed of their joke or something. After they hastily pulled their story and replaced it with an April Fools Day message, the story is no longer linked on their news page, you can only get to it if you have the link already.

I guess it's not so much of an April Fools Day joke if it happens two days early and then goes missing before April Fools Day itself.

Wonder if they simply screwed up, saw the reactions and realized they screwed up, and then yanked the story in a hurry trying to save face by claiming it was all a big joke?

Are you sure that update 3.21 is optional because it really seems mandatory and also they could make it optional for awhile only to make it mandatory after awhile.

It's optional because you have to decide to do the update. You have the choice of whether to access the PSN or not. Yes, I know PSN is kind of important to online gaming. But the point I am making is that it's not necessary to perform the update for your PS3 to operate correctly. It's required if you want to log in to PSN. It is optional because your PS3 will not cease to function if you skip it.

Hey Highlander,
OK I can kind of understand from a few of your earlier statements on why Sony might really be taking away the "Other OS" option, for the security reasons.

But let's just say for argument's sake, a 60Gig user decides to keep his Linux by refusing to update any more firmware on it & just uses one of the newer 120/250 slims to do the firmwares, gaming go online, etc.

So being non-tech noob, my question is, wouldn't Sony still be in the same security/hackable predicament from those who kept their Linux & didn't upgrade, or has Sony got that route pretty much covered too????

Agree with this comment 0 up, 0 down Disagree with this comment

Highlander
Tuesday, March 30, 2010 @ 6:43:47 PM

Not really. What I think Sony is concerned about is that the hack that exists represents a chink in the armor of the PS3 that could potentially be widened. Right now it's very hard to do, you have to effectively dismantle your PS3 and potentially fry the motherboard if you mess up. However, what was demonstrated was an ability to cause the hypervisor (in OtherOS mode only) to act in particular ways by directly modifying memory used by the hypervisor. In other words, a hacker can gain control of the hypervisor. The security of the PS3 is very complex and robust. The designers actually assumed that a hacker would one day gain control of the hypervisor and so the system and Cell CPU were designed to be secure even from a compromised hypervisor.

Now, the thing is that the security of the Cell is hardware based, there are encryption keys burned into the Cell CPU that are not accessible by software. The worry is that even though it is in theory (and by design) impossible to get the keys, somehow someone might find a way. Since the way into the system is through OtherOS mode, as soon as it was confirmed that someone had broken into the hypervisor in OtherOS mode I figured that the OtherOS mode would go away.

In terms of the threat, in the scenario you describe, of course the user with Two PS3s offers no more security threat and Sony is not mandating the update be installed. It's optional so if your PS3 doesn't ever need to talk to PSN, you don't need to update it.

Sony is taking a precaution just in case someone somehow turns this exploit of OtherOS mode into a way to open up the GameOS mode and custom firmware. A PS3 with custom firmware and an insecure GameOS mode is a security threat to PSN because it is capable (until detection) of getting into PSN and past the authentication security of PSN.

You remember that old expression that you give someone an inch and they take a mile? I think it applies here. If Sony gives an inch on security, what's to stop hackers taking a mile. Sony cannot work on the basis of what is proven to be, they have to plan for potential threats.

Removing OtherOS is a precaution. I know it's upset some who did in fact use their PS3 both for Linux and for games. But the number of such users is in reality very, very small. So the pain is limited, it's not that I don't care, it's just that I don't want to see the PS3 or PSN hacked.

Researchers using PS3s as low cost super computer clusters are not affected by this because they have no reason to update their firmware in any case.

Jed

If they are that concerned about security/hacking they will probably make it mandatory. In that case you would have to update if you want to play while your system is online.

WTF is going on...I leave this site for a week's time and when I return, there's nothing but chaos. I'm ashamed at some of you Sony fans. Jumping to conclusions when an article presents a distasteful idea such as an overlapping premium service...this is downright uncool. TheHighlander is as cool as ever though, always successfully remaining levelheaded despite the widespread disbelief and fear around him.

Regardless of this being or not being a rumor, I just find the topic in the article unbelievable. Before anyone takes this comment in the wrong way, let me clarify. It is difficult to believe Sony could just up and exclude free content, literally commercialized as free media. Now, I see no problem with Sony providing extra special services under certain subscriptions...leaving those consumers content with their free services unscathed in mind and in wallet. However, if these promised free services are in any way denied to the consumer by Sony, there lies a problem.

I'm not going to bit@h on about my worries because I'm fairly certain this is just a hoax and somebody really soon will clear this up and all this panic and anxiety will be nothing but a faint memory traveling to the back of our heads. Yeah...I'm not worried...I mean really! Paying for online service...that's preposterous! I'm just waiting for this joke to just blow over! Guys, how about some backup?

So, after this, I'd suggest that PSX not even publish any kind of story from a foreign magazine that quotes an exec. It seems like a high number of these stories result in untruthful information.

That being said, has dropping this article completely been considered? There's really no point to having it any more since the entire basis of it is false. All that's going to happen now is that some poor chuck is going to read the headline and freak out--"OMG SONY IS GOING TO START CHARGING FOR PSN!"--without bothering to read the article.

April fools joke in march interesting...

@ LV its not that I can't afford to pay for online ect it's that I shouldn't have too, these companies make more than enough money on Content, the games and other little accessories here and there that paying for a service ontop of already paying for a internet service is ridiculous. I have a lot of Xbox fans plus I use to work for the tech support and trust me Live goes down more often than enough that I bet if that happened to you while u were online and everything crashed u'd be pissed my friends have said recently they are more off line with the console than online due to M$ always updating something or the video game developers servers are botched. I know u'll argue with me until u're blue in the face but sometimes when you pay for something you never get what you pay for where as if it's free you see the better results and work harder to give the customers the best once a comapny charges for something time and time they get lazy and my friends have all said being loyal xbox fans that they have noticed Live getting worse and worse over the years cause M$ takes the customers for granted due to getting a lot of money from them on the live service which is 60 bucks a year in Canada.

April Fool's joke huh? Cute...it won't be so funny when Sony actually announces their plans to charge users for PSN and pricing comes out being similar to this articles.

If they aren't charging for the service now: Playstation Store, Playstion Home, access to Sony Servers to play multi-player games, etc., then they shouldn't start. Nintendo doesn't charge for their online services and look at where they are with console and game title sales? Through the roof people, through the roof.

As with the fat PS3s losing the option of being able to install OtherOS, sucks to be you if you're an owner of one. I have a PS3 slim, as will millions of people buying a PS3 this year and beyond. For us, this option being removed is nothing lost as it was never provided.

The option of being able to install another OS to my PS3 was the only feature I actually felt I missed out on when I got my PS3 slim. Though after seeing videos of Linux on a PS3, I quickly lost interest. Now that Sony is catching everyone up to Slim standards all the better.
