Rockstar On RDR: "Long, Grueling, And Immensely Challenging"

Although we may soon hear about the next Grand Theft Auto, Rockstar's closest big project is the highly anticipated Red Dead Redemption.

The game has been delayed a few times already but we're hoping it sticks to the current May 18 launch date in North America. Apparently, one of the issues facing the game's production is the fact that development has been extremely challenging. This according to what Rockstar boss Dan Houser told Games Magazine (as cited by Connected Consoles); evidently, this extremely ambitious western-themed action/adventure title has been in the works for five years. And it hasn't been easy. Said Houser:

You simply could not make a game like Red Dead Redemption until this point – vast open areas of rolling wilderness, a complex, living ecosystem, a massive array of characters, side-quests all flowing together. This project has been long, grueling and enormously challenging for us..."

Rockstar also has high-profile titles like L.A. Noire, Max Payne 3 and Agent in the hopper (not to mention GTAV) so they've been very busy lately. And we're very excited about RDR, which appears to boast gameplay very similar to that found in Assassin's Creed II. So cross your fingers that all their hard work will pay off come May...

Five years is a very long time, hopefully it all pays off for them.

I would hate to see that much hard work go down the tube.

No worries I'm sure Rockstar won't make it turn out as a broken game.

Whew, I thought by the title that the game would be long, grueling, and immensely challenging.

I'm skeptical. How can a game be that huge if its only on one DVD?

GTA IV's map is tiny next to JC 2. I think, because of no cars, RDR will seem massive due to the slower pace at which you move.

This massive game sounded like a PS3 project. I wonder also developing for xbox held them back. I can't wait to play RDR.

i cant wait for this game just because rd-revolver and gun were the only games i could ever get my dad to sit around and take interest in because he thinks hes a cowboy! lol and im sure this one will get him just as immersed. i just love it when i can get people that would never care a bit for gaming to sit down and get really interested in one.

I tried to teach my Dad Doom back in the day, he couldn't understand how he was being hurt from behind him *facepalm* It's too bad too cuz he loves anything military and if he could ever play he would be a Modern Warfare nut.

i can remember back in the day when my father and i played pong and space invaders on atari. then, it was on to nintendo w/ super mario bros. but he had no interest in those games. until, super NES and the first rpg final fantasy. needless to say, we both got in trouble w/ my mom for missing a week of work for him, and school for me.

When hear news about a new multiplat game, I start thinking how better it could have been if it would have been a PS3 exclusive.

I think what they were trying to say was "You just don't know how hard it was to put this game on 1 disc for the xbox, we wanted it to be ps3 exclusive but we have to compete with Activision so we have to go multiplatform, so after working our asses off heres one of the best games you'll play this generation." I think Rockstar is one of the few companies that hasn't tarnished it's reputation by doing silly things.

I'm surprised they don't have a special edition, I figured theyd give you a replica saddle and some cowboy boots or a country music cd Yee Haw!

@Jian No I didnt get the gta4 dlc, I meant they haven't radically changed the formula to their games that their fans loved. GTA has evolved from top down view only in the 1st & 2nd ones, 3 introduced the 3rd person perspective and the series has sold like crazy ever since. They have only made minor improvements and changed the settings in the games since, I can't say the same for companies like SquareEnix or Activision, EA is actually making fun games again so no complaints there.

After seeing some PAX videos for this game, it seems pretty freakin awsome. Mo-cap'd horses and all kinds of awsome stuff. I'm definitely interested in this game, can't wait.

HMMM,
This article just makes me wonder if Red Dead Revolver would've been done a bit easier and in somewhat less time too....

....if only Rockstar's bosses had ridden some of the horses in RDR, instead of them riding their own employees as much.

back in the ps1 days, even ps2 days i would defend R* to the death because they really put out some of the industries best games.
today, well i cant say the same sadly.
im still on the fence with this, no demo, very few press info i mean when was the last time we got a preview of this?
ive always been a massive western fan, GUN and red dead revolver were my favorite ps2 titles so it could turn out to be a sleeper hit.
but since its R* i wont count my chickens till they hatch.

This is also a buy for me... (holding thumbs I can still play these games without having to upgrade to FW3.21 for now)...

It has been on my radar since it was announced and I am looking at it very closely...

I may not buy it on day of release, simply because I expect issues would need to be ironed out after release... wouldn't be surprised if a few patches were released along the way, so I will wait for a month or two and see/hear the reviews and the experience of players playing it...

I am very cautious these days, been burnt before, but not anymore...

Q!

Well I can't explain it, but I've never been a fan of western films, but western games tend to pique my interest. Weird, I know.

I watched some vids for this game and it looks like it has the potential to be really awesome. I hope it's as huge as they claim and I hope that since it has MP, that it is done well and does take away from the SP.

I guess in the end I'm really hopeful for this game, it looks really cool. My fingers will be crossed but my checkbook is tight, so I will have to wait for Ben or Arnolds review.

I'm very excited for this game, since yesterday. I just hope the PS3 version doesn't get the short end here, this will probably lead to another debate against my xbots.
I just hope it's going to be good, it's Rockstar so it'll probably be fine.
Btw, the different areas look great, this is really one of those games where you can just roam around the world, that's real chill.

Man, 5 years is a VERY long time! In fact, 5 years ago, the PS3 still hadn't launched... That's pretty nuts!

The game sounds very interesting! Here's to hoping that they'll utilize the PS3s' BluRay to keep more graphical quality intact instead of using a DVD sized chunk of it (more like tiny slab of it).

I doubt they're referring to how hard it is to stick everything on a DVD, to be honest. It sounds like they've challenged themselves to a largely immersive environment that requires more than sand, grass, and rock texturing. When I read that article, many things caught my eye.. Like "a complex, living ecosystem" and "vast rolling wilderness" and "massive array of characters".

Making characters unique is quite the challenge. Making large maps alongside with it is much more challenging. Creating an immersive "ecosystem" sounds like the key to brutally kicking themselves in the teeth to get it all working the way they'd want to see it happen.

Interesting to say the least!
