Rockstar On RDR: "Long, Grueling, And Immensely Challenging"
Although we may soon hear about the next Grand Theft Auto, Rockstar's closest big project is the highly anticipated Red Dead Redemption.
The game has been delayed a few times already but we're hoping it sticks to the current May 18 launch date in North America. Apparently, one of the issues facing the game's production is the fact that development has been extremely challenging. This according to what Rockstar boss Dan Houser told Games Magazine (as cited by Connected Consoles); evidently, this extremely ambitious western-themed action/adventure title has been in the works for five years. And it hasn't been easy. Said Houser:
You simply could not make a game like Red Dead Redemption until this point – vast open areas of rolling wilderness, a complex, living ecosystem, a massive array of characters, side-quests all flowing together. This project has been long, grueling and enormously challenging for us..."
Rockstar also has high-profile titles like L.A. Noire, Max Payne 3 and Agent in the hopper (not to mention GTAV) so they've been very busy lately. And we're very excited about RDR, which appears to boast gameplay very similar to that found in Assassin's Creed II. So cross your fingers that all their hard work will pay off come May...

I'm surprised they don't have a special edition, I figured theyd give you a replica saddle and some cowboy boots or a country music cd Yee Haw!

This article just makes me wonder if Red Dead Revolver would've been done a bit easier and in somewhat less time too....
....if only Rockstar's bosses had ridden some of the horses in RDR, instead of them riding their own employees as much.

today, well i cant say the same sadly.
im still on the fence with this, no demo, very few press info i mean when was the last time we got a preview of this?
ive always been a massive western fan, GUN and red dead revolver were my favorite ps2 titles so it could turn out to be a sleeper hit.
but since its R* i wont count my chickens till they hatch.

It has been on my radar since it was announced and I am looking at it very closely...
I may not buy it on day of release, simply because I expect issues would need to be ironed out after release... wouldn't be surprised if a few patches were released along the way, so I will wait for a month or two and see/hear the reviews and the experience of players playing it...
I am very cautious these days, been burnt before, but not anymore...

I watched some vids for this game and it looks like it has the potential to be really awesome. I hope it's as huge as they claim and I hope that since it has MP, that it is done well and does take away from the SP.
I guess in the end I'm really hopeful for this game, it looks really cool. My fingers will be crossed but my checkbook is tight, so I will have to wait for Ben or Arnolds review.

I just hope it's going to be good, it's Rockstar so it'll probably be fine.
Btw, the different areas look great, this is really one of those games where you can just roam around the world, that's real chill.

The game sounds very interesting! Here's to hoping that they'll utilize the PS3s' BluRay to keep more graphical quality intact instead of using a DVD sized chunk of it (more like tiny slab of it).
I doubt they're referring to how hard it is to stick everything on a DVD, to be honest. It sounds like they've challenged themselves to a largely immersive environment that requires more than sand, grass, and rock texturing. When I read that article, many things caught my eye.. Like "a complex, living ecosystem" and "vast rolling wilderness" and "massive array of characters".
Making characters unique is quite the challenge. Making large maps alongside with it is much more challenging. Creating an immersive "ecosystem" sounds like the key to brutally kicking themselves in the teeth to get it all working the way they'd want to see it happen.
Interesting to say the least!

I would hate to see that much hard work go down the tube.
