Famitsu Reveals PS3 Exclusive Mech Sequel, "ACE R"
Mech games are often hit or miss and they're also more popular in Japan. However, if we're talking about a PlayStation 3 exclusive, it could manage to entice more people.
The latest Famitsu edition, as noted by Andriasang, has apparently lifted the lid on Another Century Episode R. Known as "ACE," the first was developed as a collaborative PS2 project between Banpresto (Super Robot Wars) and From Software (Armored Core). A total of three entries came from Banpresto, the last of which arrived back in the fall of 2007. As for this evident sequel, "ACE R" is in development only for the PS3 and is set to be produced by Namco Bandai some time this summer. From Software is at the helm with the Super Robot Taisen production team handling the planning and premise/scenario aspects. As for the anime mech franchises that will appear in the game, the list is fairly extensive:
- Super Dimension Century Orguss (new)
- Z Gundam
- Gundam: Char's Counterattack
- Crossbone Gundam (new)
- Gundam Seed Destiny
- Overman King Gainer
- Full Metal Panic (new)
- Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 (new)
- Genesis of Aquarion (new)
- Macross Zero (new)
- Macross F (new)
The reason why it says "new" next to some of those is because it's the first time we'll be seeing those franchises in the ACE series. Famitsu also turns us onto details of the storyline, characters and setting, so read up on those through the link above. It sounds like a good idea, provided we don't get anything like Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire, one of the single worse PS3 games to date. We'll also have to find out if ACE R will be distributed outside of Japan...

I kind of like nintendo this generation. They aren't stealing exclusives and third party developers from other platforms. It's up to the 3rd party to make the choices. Microsoft should learn something from them.
This is because they are completely satisfied with first party exclusives and console sales alone. Each one of their first party game sell as much as MW2 for PS3 + Xbox!

Isn't it funny how console exclusives are once again driving the industry, and multi-platform games are less important? I remember a year or two ago when multi-platform games were supposedly killing the PS3 because of the inferior ports. Then the PS3 exclusives began to bite.

Speaking of mech games, this story brings back old memories of when I bought a Xbox just so I could play 'Steel Battalion'. My final realization was, "wow, I totally just wasted $550" ($200 for the game, $250 for the system). Yeah... good times.

I bought that Steel Battalion controller brand new from Japan about 4 years ago for only $130 total. (but it came with the 2nd game in the series, "SB:Line of Contact", & not the 1st one that I thought it would have).
So once I opened it & got it all set up, I found out I STILL had to pick up the 1st gamejust to play it, because SB:LOC was multi-player only, and I don't do MP.(BTW, did manage to find it for $10 used)
Anyways, finally got the 2st game & it wound up being fun, but I really sucked at trying to maintain all my mech's functions with that huge 40 button controller, LOL
And that gigantic monstrosity of a controller with it's separate foot pedals take up way too damned much space on my collection shelves(not that I'm complaining, mind ya).
BTW, I got lucky & was able to get the more rare "blue" buttoned one. Which did you get, the green button, or the blue button one??

I remember finding it quite difficult and quite slow. Just wasn't really my cup of tea. Plus I didn't really have a tabletop to put the "dashboard" on so I had to lay it across my lap while I played. This, of course, became quite difficult considering how my legs were constantly moving on the pedal controls. LOL. Not too fun of a time.

Even some of the better mech games still just feel like a 3rd person shooter where your character is a giant, clumsy, stiff legged, immobile, slug.
It would feel like playing uncharted if Drake was 500 pounds and had a broken leg.
It's not that I don't like the idea of a mech games, mechs are uber awesome. Just haven't seen them well implemented in video games.

Yeah, i know what you mean about trying to hold it up, had mine on a TV tray when using it, but I always though the weight of it would wind up collapsing the flimsy tray.
And I agree about the difficulty, but since it was a one & only true mech simulator.
And there was such a huge learning curve to it, & that just so much to do with all those 40 buttons, joysticks, shifters, & foot pedals that the game itself always seemed to just get away from me.
Hell, took me two days before I was able to get my mech to move out of the hanger. I thought I had all of those sequence down, but just kept missing that 1 tiny inconspicuous step that completed the mech's whole start-up & move program.
As for my controller(& since I'm a collector too), I'll never get rid of it & it's the centerpiece(not to mention, being a conversation piece too)out of all my gaming collections.
BTW, this guy at the E3 2002 show tested it out for the readers. And he had the same trouble getting used to all the buttons too, LOL

Highly recommended!
The best thing this gen is you don't need a Japanese PS2 to import this game.
Anyway, if you read the original article, the original writer says based on the quality of the screens he'd be surprised if this doesn't make it overseas.
