Rumor: Portal 2 Headed To The PS3

Valve has often annoyed PlayStation 3 owners in the past, despite some conciliatory remarks about "needing more PS3-related talent."

However, might we finally be seeing another Valve product on the PS3? When Portal 2 was first announced, it was - unsurprisingly - only confirmed for the Xbox 360, PC and Mac. And yet, as found by PlayStation University, the game is clearly placed on the cover of an upcoming PSM3 issue. Now, even if this is true, we're really hoping that PS3 owners aren't saddled with another poor port ('cough' The Orange Box 'cough'), and by now, we figure EA understands that multiplatform titles certainly have the potential for big sales. But we've heard nothing from Valve and we're wondering about that picture of the magazine: it appears real but if it is genuine, might it be a misprint? A mistake? A big ol' error? Or is it really a leak of the truth, which may be officially revealed within the next few weeks? Either way, it's likely that PS3 owners would definitely appreciate a game like Portal 2, despite the fact that they never saw the original title.

For now, this will just have to stay a rumor. We imagine either Valve or EA will make some kind of comment soon but if they don't, we'll have to assume it isn't coming. Or is silence as good as a confirmation...?

The thing is, valve need a little brainpower to make this game semi-decent. they already have the premise and fans...
if Valve could be ars*d to make a proper game of this for PS3 they would make F*ck loads, this game is wanted badly!

The 1st one was/is a blast and certainly was a fresh take on the whole FPS genre.

If this is true for all of you that prefer FPS on consoles I hope that EA doesn't handle it like The Orange Box.

Sadly, I still play Team Fortress on my ps3. I paid for the game off of Steam, but my laptop can't handle it. Yes, I know the ps3 is the worst way to play it. Dammit....I'm gonna go 'rect me a sentry.

Not really a fan of TeamFortress2. I prefer Team Fortress Classic and still play with some of my old clan members though it isn't the same since it's an online game from a decade ago and not too many people still play.

It was (in both the ps3 and 360 orange box), and is my favorite puzzler of this generation. The team who designed were not Valve, but brought aboard for their prototype of the game in some college contest, IIRC.

Portal ran fine on my PS3. In fact, I've never had any troubles with any part of the Orange Box (though some of the load times are extensive).

I don't see why the port has such a bad reputation, but maybe I'm just lucky to have avoided major glitches.

While the 360 and Steam both also have it as a standalone game, all three systems have the original Portal in the Orange Box, don't they? Even as a rough port it is still on the PS3.

Portal's easily one of my favourite games this gen so the sequel being available to as many people as possible is definitely a good thing, as long as the port's a good one.

I forgot to say that seeing as pre-release rumours have sprung up about PS3 ports for Left 4 Dead and then its sequel and both turned out to be false I'm going to treat this sceptically for now. An appearance on a PS3 magazine cover seems a little more valid than a mistake in a listing or statement though.

I do sometimes venture out from the forum but I'll probably retreat back there soon enough.

Portal 2's a definite PC purchase for me, yep. The first game's portal effect was enough to give my crappy machine some trouble though so I don't know how Portal 2 will run. Even though they're all Source games there's been a gradual decline in how well they run on my machine from Half-Life 2 (excellent) down to Left 4 Dead 2 (okay).

I'm not a fan of FPS at all, but I loved the first Portal. It's one of those games that tends to grow on you. Everyone should try this out. If this happens to be true, I'll download it from PSN

If you were going to play one part of TOB, you should have chosen Portal. I'd rate it MUCH higher than HL2, which seemed totally dated to me.

After a strong start, the story elements disappeared for WAY too long and it became another boring, linear shooting gallery. I lost any desire to continue, despite wanting to know how the story developed.

I got the orange box when it came out because I had always wanted to play HL2 and didn't have a good PC. My justification was that I was getting 5 games for the price of 1.... And that's a nice deal. Portal was definitely the best part of that package and I have been waiting for portal 2 ever since. I don't think it suffered as bad from the crappy port mechanics like the main game did.

Even though I REALLY want this game, I don't think I could pay $60 bucks just for portal 2.

it cant be this months PSM3 because the front cover for that is apparently F.E.A.R 3.
maybe its a photoshop job since the last gameinformer mag actually had portal 2 as the cover page, just seems a little coincidental to have gameinformer one month than PSM3 the one after.
i mean how often is it that a game gets a front cover twice in a row?

i have no doubt valve will release a game on the ps3, i remember reading a article a year or so ago saying they have hired quite a few highly trained ps3 programmers to work on half life 3.
valve are working on a new engine for that game, their finally putting the source engine to bed, so it just makes seance to release a new engine on all platforms.
creating a new engine for just the PC and 360 would be really stupid, and since this is EA were talking about i cant see them allowing valve to keep their games off the ps3.
ea needs all the cash cows they can get!

Weird. The only thing against this being fact is the fact that it's mentioned in a tiny sentence on the front cover.

You'd think a huge unveil like Portal 2 would be frontpage news wouldn't you? Or at least an article by itself or something, but rather it looks like just another game tacked on with the rest of the games. :\

I loved Portal, but that was when I was mainly a PC games player, not sure how some of the fast moves would be translated on the gamepad, but then I was going for speed challenges. May just have to run this game via crossover on my Linux machine if the PS3 version is poor again.

Since I never played it on the PC, Idont know what that experience is like. But I can say that I didn't have a problem with the controls on the PS3 version.

Even after saying that.... I think most first person games would be better from a control stanpoint on a PC with a mouse and kb.

They are, I do miss the Mouse and Kb, I was really hoping that the game devs would get their act together and add support since the PS3 works with a USB KB and mouse without issue, UT had the support though it felt laggy.

I must be asking too much though as the game dev's even after all this time still find it impossible to even let the gamer customise the buttons to their liking forcing us to use their button scheme layout.

The Orange Box is one of the best game combos you can buy. I don't see anyone else including multiple NEW games together and charging less than the cost of one new game.

It's pretty clear the 2nd Portal will be far more than the original and worthy of a stand alone price.

Don't kid us, even if it was cheap and on the PSN you still wouldn't buy it.

I bought The Orange Box for both PC and PS3. Believe me, Portal 2 is on my radar despite the "corporate pig" that runs Valve. Still, at full retail box price, it certainly doesn't have as big an appeal as the first one.

Saying it's longer than the first one is like saying Tetris 2 is longer than the first one. It's just a bunch of puzzles. The original's length was one of its strengths.

I almost agree with you 100%. I did experience an occasional, but very annoying sound glitch, kind of hard to describe, but it was basically like an inconsistent buzz, with very sharp clicks in it. It would only last for a minute or two at a time, and it still played the normal audio, but it was very distracting in my opinion. Other than that, and slow load times, it was alright.

I'm not getting my hopes up, but it would be nice if they brought it to the PS3. If I have a better PC by the time it comes out, I'll still get it for that, but if not, it would be nice to have a compatible platform for it.

Portal 2 is on my very large list of anticipated games coming out later this year. For what it is worth now, The Orange Box is a complete steal. I really didn't see or experience any major issues on my PS3 copy. I grew up playing Half Life so I need Episode 3!! Need it!

Valve isn't going to bring it to the PS3, instead of choosing that, they chose to Develop it for Macs! That is just way too sad in my opinion.

Eh, I'm not fooled by Valves attempt to make anything for the PS3. It'll be plagued with issues. It'll load slower than a Pentium Pro 200mhz PC. It'll burp artifacts. It'll lack shaders and detailed textiles.

Regardless, I'll probably still be on Heavenly Sword trying to get the hang of this motion controlled Kia bow crap. I was ready to put my controller through a window last night!
