March NPD: GoWIII, FFXIII Sell High, PS3 Keeps Growing
It was a darn good month for the industry, which saw God of War III, Final Fantasy XIII and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 top 1 million copies sold, another dogfight between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and another month of growth for the PS3.
The latest NPD numbers for March are in, and as noted by NPD analyst Anita Frazier, "in terms of total revenue, March 2010 is the third best non-holiday month on record behind March 2008 and June 2008." Only hardware sales fell - down 4% to $440.5 million - but software sales shot up last month, rising 10% overall to $795 million. God of War III hit #1 on the top 10 list with 1.1 million units sold, and the combined PS3 and 360 sales of Final Fantasy XIII hit 1.322 million (the top 10 list doesn't combine SKUs for multiplatform titles). But not surprisingly, the PS3 version sold much better in comparison to the 360 version; 828,000 to 493,900. The following are the official numbers:
Overall Dollar Sales
- Games: $1.52 billion (+6%)
- Hardware: $440.5 million (-4%)
- Software: $875.3 million (+10%)
- Accessories: $206.8 million (+11%)
Hardware Sales
- DS: 700,800
- Wii: 557,500
- Xbox 360: 338,400
- PlayStation 3: 313,900
- PSP: 119,900
- PlayStation 2: 118,300
As for Sony's response, they wanted to bring your attention to the following facts: the PS3 is still the only console to see double digit growth both year-over-year (44%) and year-to-date (36%), four of the top ten software titles were on the PS3, and PS3 software/hardware/peripheral sales comprised 26% of the total video game dollar share in March, the highest of any console. Their official statement from Patrick Seybold, SCEA Senior Director of Corporate Communications:
"The huge appetite for PS3 content and gaming experiences has never been stronger as we continue to bring out great games like God of War III which was the #1 software title in March with more than 1.1 million units sold in less than 3 weeks. We also remain the only console to see double digit growth of 44% when compared to last March and are up 36% at this point in the calendar year. It's no surprise, consumer demand remains incredibly high and PS3 supply will continue to be tight across our retail channels in the next few months. We're experiencing healthy momentum from an already blockbuster lineup of games such as MAG, Heavy Rain, White Knight Chronicles, MLB 10 The Show, and God of War III in just the past 3 months -- which some would call a great year, but for us it represents just the first quarter of many anticipated games like ModNation Racers, Gran Turismo 5, and others we have yet to announce this year."

The xbox just got a foothold here for being cheap, the young people grabbed onto it and made it popular and most Americans still think MS is a quality company for some reason. America only likes youth, so them and their system got pandered to. (Any television show that mentions video games says "xbox" where they used to say "playstation")

Electronics? Who the eff cares? Most parts are probably synthesized in China anyways. It makes sense to support your local market, but I'm pretty sure the nationality of a video game console makes no difference.

The main reason the 360 is doing well here is because it was the cheaper choice for a while. Same goes for the Wii.

There's a big difference between American products and foreign products. Your Nikes suck donkey nuts because the product quality takes more time and loses their sales. Have you seen the overlapped glue marks on shoes? Seriously? For $100+, I should be looking at a perfect product.
JAPAN is not a 3rd world country with poor standards. Neither is Canada. There are places you can buy quality products that last a long time and are very well built outside of the US, but you can count those places on one hand.
The reason many people believe their American made products are best is quite simply because we've always had high standards. Most American cars assembled in Mexico feel like they're assembled there for a good reason. They suck, quality wise. Fit and finish is horrible. Part failure is sky-high.
Electronics? Well, if they're made anywhere other than the US, Canada or Japan, I don't expect them to last.. And they usually don't.
Every model from a brand is different and can be built anywhere you can imagine. Especially electronics. They're the worst.
I don't care what anyone has to say about China. Our business with them has proved to be lethal to the standards of quality and the value of workmanship. Yet even our (poisoned) dog food comes from there. I mean, how the hell does Lead get into dog food? Our childrens toys? Why are we still doing business there?! Because it's more profitable and we're just cash cows to the millionaires who don't want to pay workers who want more money to do the job right.

i disagree, the wii had a few games i liked. well, new super mario bros. and smash bros. its not much but i still enjoyed them. maybe its the nostalgia with the mario games and the idea of multiple characters from different series/games battling it out like snake. i love the zelda series too since i played the gamecube version on my nintendo wii. if the new zelda is motion controlled only, then it'll be the first zelda game for consoles that i wont be buying until its real cheap. I love the zelda franchise more than final fantasy and if they ruined zelda for the hardcore fans, then thats 2 of my all time great franchises ruined in one generation.

Guys I'm not making this stuff up...I know...and I DAMN WELL KNOW...some moron in M$ said it and right about now they're trying to hide from their failure in making a damn arrogant claim.
Because honestly...I've had enough of these so called M$ executives coming out of nowhere making random fallacious claims backed by absolutely no evidence whatsoever.
In other words, what I'm really trying to say is: FU** OFF Micro$oft!

At least they gave GOWIII proper respect
I'm really over the whole American sales data. it's a lost 'cause
Japan and Europe will keep the ps3 going
And it's true, even without games Americans just buy the other console because it's cheap (cheaper) and because they think it's the better one.
While the Japanese/most of Europe are informed, or at the very least know which console is getting the better games.

I am dissappointed and almost embarassed by the American market and it's continued support for the 360. I understand that there are a few good games for the console, but overall it's obvious that the PS3 is the better system.
But I guess when you're 12 and all your friends are telling you that "if you don't get a 360 then you're a loser, and that the PS3 is gay"....then there's really only one option for you.
Unfortunately there are not enough of us older educated types here in the states.

Huh?
The game would have been bigger and better as an exclusive and I bet you they lost at least 500 000 sales from PS3 owners that decided to wait for FF Versus XIII seeing it's exclusive and has a world map and all that...
Just curious. It seems like the PS3 community has really started backing the exclusives and sales are up so that is a good thing. It means we'll get more and even greater games.
Yeah sure it might never reach the COD sales numbers but at least exclusive developers can say that 1.1 Million sales in 3 weeks is most definitely worth it...

It might have a chance to catch up worldwide, but that would be years from now; possibly after the launch of the next generation of consoles.
One thing the data shows is that Sony has a lot of positive momentum for itself right now. The fans, like most of us here at PSX, are pretty hardcore and we put our money where our mouths are. Sony has done an excellent job over the last 18 months in particular, giving us many reasons to spend our hard earned cash.

Unfortunately, Sony just can't rely on the minority that will buy a PS4 regardless of the price the put on it.

although i just thought about final fantasy 13's "streamlined" combat system, those 360 sales were probably from twitch gamers, not fans. Either way, FF13 couldve shifted a few more software and hardware if it stayed exclusive. oh, and one last thing. concerning decisions like this, sony, get your head out of your a$$e$!!

I think the FF13 multiplat contributed to 360 a bit too, and also the multiplat games like Dante's Inferno, Bayonetta, AC2, Darksiders... helped 360 loyalist. But I just do not get it, for the multiplat titles, why would anyone want to buy a 360 version rather than a PS3 version copy.
This does not make sense, and if this continues, I dont see when and how the PS3 total number of units sold can surpass that of the 360.
for me, i bought a 360 two years ago, because that time, there were no JRPGs on PS3, and I have to play Lost Odyssey, Infinite Undiscovery, Star Ocean 4, Blue Dragon, Last Remnant, Magna Carter 2 etc, but that was all, I did not buy a single 360 title since last year, and dont think I will buy another one in the near future on 360. and for multiplat games, i get the PS3 version, and for PS3 exclusives.... u know the logic.
I am just a bit discouraged after seeing the figure from one of the best months of PS3, still behind 360. sigh ...
