Rumor: Silent Hill To Go First-Person?
For the record, with the exception of one forgettable rail shooter, Silent Hill has never been played from the first-person perspective and speaking of "perspective," that's the only reason this rumor exists.
Really, it's all in how you interpret the evidence. The rumor in question began with the picture you see here, which is a fact sheet of sorts for developer Vatra, now known to be handling the upcoming Silent Hill. These details come courtesy of Digital Development Management and as you can see, it listed the studio's strengths as "FPS and Action" games. Furthermore, it showed two titles; the already announced Rush 'N Attack: Ex Patriot and one for an unknown "major franchise." Now, assuming the latter is indeed Silent Hill and knowing that Rush 'N Attack is a straight-up action game, one might want to assume that the "FPS" part of the team's strengths applies to the new horror installment. Thus far, those within the survival/horror genre content themselves with a third-person over-the-shoulder mechanic, which began with Resident Evil 4 and continued into RE5 and Dead Space. But a freaky FPS...? Doom III was the scariest FPS I've ever played but it certainly wasn't Silent Hill, and I'm wondering if that perspective would be preferable... It's hard to tell.
Maybe, maybe not. Who knows? Besides, all we're basing this on is that set of info and the fact that it lists two strengths and two games. Vatra could be working on other projects, after all.

A horror game NEEDS to make you feel that you are going to die at any moment from either what you know is there or what you think might be there. No 1st person game has gave me a fear like that.

Peka-boos are (IMO) the only kind of fear Iv seen work in a FPS. In a FPS you always have a huge gun, club, or blade right in your face. How can you have fear with a damn shotgun in your hand? The only true fear Iv had in a FPS is when Im low on ammo and at a boss.

You want fear? Go hunt down Clock Tower for PS1 (it might also be an old PC game as well). That game scared me more than anything! Just thinking about those scissors gives me chills to this day. That sound will always hunt my sleep.
Bioshock (great game) just tossed mutants at you. It's the same for Doom (except it's demons). Once you get past those skins they're all the same, someone trying to shoot, club, or stab you. If you really want to scare the s*** out of someone, you need a heavy mix of different breeds of monsters.
The first 3 Resident Evils are good examples of different breeds of monsters. You got the basic zombie, dogs, lickers, fish, spiders, mutants, and much more with each of them having their own personality. Oh, Id also say that Parasite Eve (ps1) had one hell of a monster list (that fist rat was nothing less than pure horror gold)

To some Bioshock is scary to some its not. I need something like Dead Space or the zombie section in Uncharted to get my blood cold.

What they need to do is look back at the old structure, form SH1-3 and RE1-3 or even onimusha what we need is the are the old styled camera angles, One of the things i love about RE-13 is the static camera angles. nowadays every 3rd person game is like Resident Evil 4 the camera static over the back of the character, its just not as intense. You can't have Silent Hill in FPS, Silent Hill's protagonist's are ususally to important not to see on the screen.

I do agree that a constant first-person view would also be craptastic, but the ability to switch to a first-person view (a la Oblivion) would make looking at objects in the environment (puzzles, etc.) much better.
I think the ideal set-up would be an over-the-shoulder view with occassional split-screen windows to show the fixed camera angles when the director wants to focus on something (they used this method in the Alias game and it worked very well), plus the ability for the player to switch to a first-person view when they need to examine something more closely.

Who's Vatra?
If they are making it 1st person then I guarantee they'll start talking about all the innovation they'll be bringing to the genre, if theyre smart they leave it 3rd person and dont sweat multiplayer especially if they plan to force co op like RE5 did.
Why can't we get a 2nd person shooter? XD

No way! The Room was the best one to me! Although it wasn't quite like the other ones, it was definately awesome. Although, I haven't really played 1 & 3. I own 2 and it was iffy. They definately needed more variety... It barely scared me. Really, it didn't even give me creeps. Zero to none.

I have yet to see a fps even come close to being as creepy as a horror game using a third person perspective. Looks like Dead Space is the last place for survival horror fans.

This could ruin the series further, but then again "Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth" was first person and the greatest survival horror game of all time.

The best feature is the complexity of the sanity measures. Your heart will beat through the controller, it will rumble when you get shaky, looking at things that are too horrible to experience cause the color to drain and visuals to go fuzzy. You have an endless supply of morphine to help with that and injuries but if you take too much it can kill you, and if you see too many freaky things it will drive you mad and you'll commit suicide.
A very intense and creepy game true to the H.P. Lovecraft experience.

I'd give this game the following:
-New ways of killing enemies such as setting up traps (digging holes for them to fall in, drenching a room with gasoline and throwing a match in there when you lure a bunch of enemies, etc.)
*Using your portable radio to confuse the enemy (will cost you battery life though, so if you waste it you'll be clueless as to if there are enemies nearby). But this technique is deadly and will save you in the most dire situations
*Build weapons from stuff you find around the SH world (pipes, nails, etc.)
*co-op play in story mode (higher difficulty and insane teamwork stuff you could do)
-New kinds of enemies who will SLOWLY find you no matter where you are (they will keep following (depending on the area or building you are)
*Enemies which are only defeated with a combination of burning their skin with fire, and then stabbing or shooting them (overall more depth to how enemies are defeated)
etc.
But hey, turning it to an FPS is better lol (sarcasm)

Besides all that, it just sounds like they're trying to imitate FEAR or Fatal Frame here. And that's kinda cheap... Don't get me wrong here! I watched my bro play FEAR for 5 seconds and I was already out of view/ear-shot of that computer screen. Let's just say I never went near that game again.
So, if Silent Hill goes FPS, that's where I'm drawing the line.

thank the lord none of yous are cowboys otherwise there would be allot of missing toes!
just because their expertise is in action or shooters does not mean this will be, and just because one is announced and one is not does not mean that either.
there is absolutely nothing in there pointing to a FPS silent hill game.
if they did that, well i would not be surprised because well that is really what capcom did to RE, monolith did to F.E.A.R and so on, and so on.
but i would like to think konami are a little smarter than that...................
if they do turn silent hill into a FPS than i have a nice juicy A bomb ready for them!
im really sick of developers destroying their games by changing their genre, for fu**s sake enough is a fu**ing enough!!!!!!!
doubt thats what their planing, but considering what craps been released lately nothing can surprise me!
