Rumor: Silent Hill To Go First-Person?

For the record, with the exception of one forgettable rail shooter, Silent Hill has never been played from the first-person perspective and speaking of "perspective," that's the only reason this rumor exists.

Really, it's all in how you interpret the evidence. The rumor in question began with the picture you see here, which is a fact sheet of sorts for developer Vatra, now known to be handling the upcoming Silent Hill. These details come courtesy of Digital Development Management and as you can see, it listed the studio's strengths as "FPS and Action" games. Furthermore, it showed two titles; the already announced Rush 'N Attack: Ex Patriot and one for an unknown "major franchise." Now, assuming the latter is indeed Silent Hill and knowing that Rush 'N Attack is a straight-up action game, one might want to assume that the "FPS" part of the team's strengths applies to the new horror installment. Thus far, those within the survival/horror genre content themselves with a third-person over-the-shoulder mechanic, which began with Resident Evil 4 and continued into RE5 and Dead Space. But a freaky FPS...? Doom III was the scariest FPS I've ever played but it certainly wasn't Silent Hill, and I'm wondering if that perspective would be preferable...  It's hard to tell.

Maybe, maybe not. Who knows? Besides, all we're basing this on is that set of info and the fact that it lists two strengths and two games. Vatra could be working on other projects, after all.

IMO no FPS can have anywhere near as much fear as a game in 3rd person. In a FPS you can't tell what a monster is doing around a corner or just what part of flesh it is ripping off of you. In 3rd person you can use much more stealth and be able to watch a monster devore a victim or do some unspeakable acts without having to be in immediate danger.

A horror game NEEDS to make you feel that you are going to die at any moment from either what you know is there or what you think might be there. No 1st person game has gave me a fear like that.

From what I got out of the demo of condemned 2 it wasn't scary to me. It has been a long time since trying the demo but if my memory serves me, C2 was more of a rush and thrill than fear. The black ooze things where the only thing that gave me a spook, and that was just a peka-boo spook. Granted it was just the demo, but given the atmosphere I don't see much else the devs could do.

Peka-boos are (IMO) the only kind of fear Iv seen work in a FPS. In a FPS you always have a huge gun, club, or blade right in your face. How can you have fear with a damn shotgun in your hand? The only true fear Iv had in a FPS is when Im low on ammo and at a boss.

@ TEG3SH

You want fear? Go hunt down Clock Tower for PS1 (it might also be an old PC game as well). That game scared me more than anything! Just thinking about those scissors gives me chills to this day. That sound will always hunt my sleep.

Bioshock (great game) just tossed mutants at you. It's the same for Doom (except it's demons). Once you get past those skins they're all the same, someone trying to shoot, club, or stab you. If you really want to scare the s*** out of someone, you need a heavy mix of different breeds of monsters.

The first 3 Resident Evils are good examples of different breeds of monsters. You got the basic zombie, dogs, lickers, fish, spiders, mutants, and much more with each of them having their own personality. Oh, Id also say that Parasite Eve (ps1) had one hell of a monster list (that fist rat was nothing less than pure horror gold)

I remember clock tower , I know its scary , but that doesn't mean if it's scary then the other games can't be as well, silent hill 3 was the scariest game ever but still bioshock with all the crazy ppl talking plotting screaming chatting around you was really scary , I think it depends on ppl taste.

thumbs up for Parasite eve Rat

Ops let me change that Warlock for the genesis was the scariest game ever , that game kept me awake for days

there is another FPs that was scary , it was for the PC back in the days but I kinda forgot the name

seriously last edit fatal frame and the game on The PS store , god dammit forgot the name were also scary

last edit it was called D

Well Bioshock does have a fear factor. It's just (again IMO) that there are so many FPSs this gen that they have (for me at least) lost any kind of fear they had.

To some Bioshock is scary to some its not. I need something like Dead Space or the zombie section in Uncharted to get my blood cold.

Oh no... no, NO!

What they need to do is look back at the old structure, form SH1-3 and RE1-3 or even onimusha what we need is the are the old styled camera angles, One of the things i love about RE-13 is the static camera angles. nowadays every 3rd person game is like Resident Evil 4 the camera static over the back of the character, its just not as intense. You can't have Silent Hill in FPS, Silent Hill's protagonist's are ususally to important not to see on the screen.

As much as I appreciate the dramatic effect of fixed camera angles, I think they make control of the character too twitchy compared to an over-the-shoulder view.

I do agree that a constant first-person view would also be craptastic, but the ability to switch to a first-person view (a la Oblivion) would make looking at objects in the environment (puzzles, etc.) much better.

I think the ideal set-up would be an over-the-shoulder view with occassional split-screen windows to show the fixed camera angles when the director wants to focus on something (they used this method in the Alias game and it worked very well), plus the ability for the player to switch to a first-person view when they need to examine something more closely.

Who's Vatra?
If they are making it 1st person then I guarantee they'll start talking about all the innovation they'll be bringing to the genre, if theyre smart they leave it 3rd person and dont sweat multiplayer especially if they plan to force co op like RE5 did.
Why can't we get a 2nd person shooter? XD

The survival horror genre is already dieing at a rapid rate and now we might loose another classic franchise to twitch gamers! I own every SH game to date and SH being a fps is an egregious mistake. Silent Hill accomplishes horror through story, character development, and environments which flow well in a third person perspective.

I have yet to see a fps even come close to being as creepy as a horror game using a third person perspective. Looks like Dead Space is the last place for survival horror fans.

Well, you were in first person when inside "the room" but that's not the same I guess.

This could ruin the series further, but then again "Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth" was first person and the greatest survival horror game of all time.

The movies aren't so good when compared to the stories, if you can find it for your xbox1 (no idea if the 360 BC would play it) I highly recommend it. It is by Bethesda (Oblivion, Fallout 3) and features the first person perspective. There are guns but it is not an FPS, you play a private detective in the 1930s investigating a Cthulhu cult. The emphasis is on the detective aspect and of course the horror.

The best feature is the complexity of the sanity measures. Your heart will beat through the controller, it will rumble when you get shaky, looking at things that are too horrible to experience cause the color to drain and visuals to go fuzzy. You have an endless supply of morphine to help with that and injuries but if you take too much it can kill you, and if you see too many freaky things it will drive you mad and you'll commit suicide.

A very intense and creepy game true to the H.P. Lovecraft experience.

There shouldn't be any more of this experimenting with the SH franchise. They decided to take a big risk with Homecoming and it was a disaster. The only good thing about Homecoming was the soundtrack, SH and FP just do not go together. Pure speculation.

It's not all THAT bad, but the game wasn't actually meant to be a Silent Hill game in the first place, it just somehow turned out to be. I remember reading it in a magazine or something. Also, the game was made before the movie, long before the movie, so there is no way they could watch the movie and decided anything unless they traveled through time and watched it. Homecoming, on the otherhand, it took the whole world tranformation from the movie, which I thought was cool, concidering the protagonist was usualy just knocked out and then woke up in it.

World, if you read this, Homecoming doesn't allow inverted camera controls, so if you play inverted, you may find it very frustrating (as I do).

If they want to innovate, hire me
I'd give this game the following:

-New ways of killing enemies such as setting up traps (digging holes for them to fall in, drenching a room with gasoline and throwing a match in there when you lure a bunch of enemies, etc.)

*Using your portable radio to confuse the enemy (will cost you battery life though, so if you waste it you'll be clueless as to if there are enemies nearby). But this technique is deadly and will save you in the most dire situations

*Build weapons from stuff you find around the SH world (pipes, nails, etc.)

*co-op play in story mode (higher difficulty and insane teamwork stuff you could do)

-New kinds of enemies who will SLOWLY find you no matter where you are (they will keep following (depending on the area or building you are)

*Enemies which are only defeated with a combination of burning their skin with fire, and then stabbing or shooting them (overall more depth to how enemies are defeated)

etc.

But hey, turning it to an FPS is better lol (sarcasm)

Come on, don't turn Silent Hill into an FPS... I will seriously flip if that happens. For two reasons: 1. Silent Hill just looks better when you can see it in third person. And 2. The monsters on Silent Hill make me want to crawl into a corner, throw up, cry, and die already. Those monsters are scary as sh** to me. And, if it were put into FPS then you wouldn't be able to see the monsters coming and you'd get to see their beautfiul faces up close.... Ew. I don't want to hear Pyramid Head coming along and not be able to see if he's behind me or just to the left.

Besides all that, it just sounds like they're trying to imitate FEAR or Fatal Frame here. And that's kinda cheap... Don't get me wrong here! I watched my bro play FEAR for 5 seconds and I was already out of view/ear-shot of that computer screen. Let's just say I never went near that game again.
So, if Silent Hill goes FPS, that's where I'm drawing the line.

I really hope they don't use their FPS knowladge on this game...that would be stupid. I hated going into the apartment on Silent Hill 4 because it was 1st person every time, took you too far away from the game's feeling itself. I'm hoping they use their action knowladge for this. Not for the gameplay itself, but for some of the scenes that they may have. Not like action movie action, but more liketerrifying and culptivating action. Like really showing how intense it really is if Pyramid Head was coming after you or a room full of Nurses all turning their out out of sync from each other and coming toward you with their scalpols. Imagine that, it would be pretty badass if they used their know how of making Action games and incorporated that into the scenes when you have to fight or maybe even when running is a better solution (but NOT like shattered memories! That game never existed!) I hope someone understands where I'm coming at with this, lol. Or else, I suck.
