Fox Airing TV Special Based On Red Dead Redemption

Well, this is a little...unexpected.

If you've been to a GameStop in the past few weeks, you already know how hard Rockstar is pushing their new - and very promising - Western-themed, open-world adventure, Red Dead Redemption. But did you realize they're going beyond simple advertisements and plan to give you a full 30-minute TV show? You probably didn't. But according to The Futon Critic, the Fox network has revealed that a half-hour animated film based on RDR will air at midnight (11:00 p.m. Central) on Saturday, May 15. John Hillcoat ("The Road") is responsible for this special, which releases a mere three days before the game is scheduled to hit store shelves. The standard description there won't come as a surprise to anyone who has been following Rockstar's ambitious project, but a TV special? Really? Will this become a new trend or is this crazy unique? We're also wondering if watching this special will give us any insight into the storyline in the game; is it like a prequel? Should we be watching it if we plan to buy Red Dead Redemption?

I suppose you'll have to tune in to find out. There's no doubt that RDR is one of our most anticipated titles of the year, so anything related to it is automatically very, very interesting.

Call me crazy, but I think they are hoping you will, what with going to all the trouble and all to put together a cartoon.

Interesting move on their part. Definately thinking outside the box.

has much hype surrounding this game, well I'll wait to launch, read many reviews, and maybe I'll buy it. I say this because despite not having played I see people saying that GTA 4 is buggy and poorly done.

Valdi, despite GTA4's flaws, this site gave it a 9.9, a nearly perfect game in their estimation at the time of its release.

If RDR gets that kind of acclaim, then hop on board the bandwagon my friend.

I'm guessing FOX has no idea what this game contains and did a market study to try and get to a new, younger audience. Kind of like when Microsoft joined up with Family Guy not knowing the show's satirical style and panicked.

microsoft was to be the soul sponsor of one of their shows, and because of this there were some microsoft jokes in the show. Well because of that microsoft decided they were not going to sponsor that episode. And the episode had to be changed slightly so that there was no free microsoft advertising in it.

Not only is this unique for video games, it's unique for cartoons in general.

When's the last time you saw a western cartoon? I gotta see this.

If you had of said any other Channel beside, FOX I might have been interested. But the idea of Fox doing something about a Rockstar game? The funny thing is they'll probably air this and then that night on Fox News, there will be a scandal about the game in the headlines...lol

Their not putting it on FOX news. Family Guy, Simpsons, American Dad sound like ok edgy shows to you? Fox is the perfect home, not ABC, NBC or CBS if you are speaking about the major 4 networks.

Point taken. Shows that I haven't had Cable in a while..lol. I don't watch enough TV to justify spending the money every month. If I really want to see something I can find it online.

I knew that they weren't putting it on Fox news, but I was just saying that Fox will probably air this, then Fox News will turn around and claim there is some scandal about this game.

I'm looking forward to this game coming out, it will be interesting to see what R* has done with it.

1.) buddies and i steal a carriage.
2.) we go to the woods
3.) find a bear
4.) fistfight or knife the bear by myself while friends watch

If I can remember this I'll watch it for sure. I just hope its better than the hackjob the others did with Dead Space and Dante's Inferno.

Could be interesting.... But if they really want to think outside the "Box" they should return the next GTA to an exclusive for the PS3... Leave that (X)Box behind....

Anyway. I am looking forward to RDR. Just hope they let you customize your character a bit more. Not facial feature and all but more like Clothing, boots, horses and so on... But I am sure they will thou....

ah, speak of the devil!

im still on the fence with this.
i really loved red dead revolver and gun, they were 2 of my favorite ps2 games, i love western shooters and i love open world games.
but......................
well its R* and they have done nothing but disappoint me this gen, and all this bitching about red dead redemption, than the complaints of how the staff were treated.
well, yeah that has not exactly stricken confidence in me!
thank god ive got a video store next to me, only problem being they dont get new releases till like 3 weeks after release :(

There was an article on RDR in the recent issue of the U.S. edition of OPM about RDR's online lobby and how vast and intricate and very much like a game it is in its own right, especially with the scripted events that play out in the lobby and the gunfights.

It was in the May issue that was on newsstands in April, so I'm not sure if it was an elaborate April Fool's joke; but it sure seems cool. Anyway, I looked online, to no avail, to see if anyone discovered it was a joke. I also can't find the information in that article anywhere else on the web.
