Nier Selling Out Quickly In Japan
As we all know, there can be significant differences between Japanese and Western gaming preferences. But in this case, we're hoping the game is selling simply because it's good.
Nier, the adult-themed action/RPG by Cavia, Inc. and distributed by Square-Enix, ships today in North America. But it came out last week in Japan in the forms of Nier Gestalt for the Xbox 360 and Nier Replicant for the PlayStation 3. And according to Examiner.com citing a recent Square-Enix Members Twitter update, this title is selling like hotcakes. The PS3 version is already sold out and the 360 version is in "short supply," which is a good sign on both counts. The publisher believes they'll sell even more copies over the weekend and bear in mind that only Japan gets this two-version treatment; here in North America, both the PS3 and 360 versions will be the Gestalt iteration. In short, everyone will only know it as Nier. The game certainly looks promising and we'd like to trust the judgment of our Japanese buddies, but we really have to dive in ourselves before coming to any conclusions.
And I've been doing that, by the way. You can expect a review very soon. I can't say anything just yet but I will say that if you didn't like either Final Fantasy XIII or Resonance of Fate, this is indeed a different style.

The most hilarious part....wait for it - that Xbox 360 owners really really want JRPGs in Japan. WHERE THE HELL IS THE XBOX 360 MARKET??!!? Why would you even attempt to do that? And why would you decide to give North America and the rest of the world the Xbox 360 version of the game: Gestalt...when Japan is buying Replicant.
Oh let me guess Wada kun - is it your intellectual theory where you thought that everything Japan likes...North America and the rest of the world can't get into...that Japan needs to grow up in their tastes...that Japan is somehow wrong with their tastes.
Jesus christ...honestly I can't help but bash on this moron.

Neir Replicant was made by Cavia and Square-Enix while thinking about what would be more appropriate for the Japanese market so they came up with the younger more effeminate hero. Neir Gestalt was made with it being the international version in mind so it went to the 360 in Japan and it features the more masculine older hero and is made to feel more powerful and muscular.
Apparently, Square-Enix has decided that everyone in the west is a Gears of War fanatic that needs to play as a big brawny super he-man to feel good about themselves. I for one am disappoint...
If anyone can dig up information on whether or not Replicant has any English subtitles and menu options that would be super appreciated because at this point importing that version of the game is the only way Square-Enix is going to see any of my money on this game.

The people who didn't like RPGs back in the day because the main characters were young or feminine are not going to jump on board now just because the main character is is brawny. They are different audiences for different types of genres. Even people like myself that play all genres have over the years come to expect certain staples in certain genres.
Blah, whatever, as long as Wada is running the company I really feel like they will continue to run themselves into the ground trying to appeal to the western market by truly destroying what made the company great so long ago.

I like my JRPG, not because the guys look like girls, but the main characters are in their teens. They give the game a style, like FFVIII, where the everyone goes to school. It really appeals to me when I was still in high school.

::rolls eyes and returns to anime::
@Godsman, and the reason we still enjoy playing those games later in life is we are using the games as an escape from real life to a time when life was more whimsical and fun. When I want to escape the gritty reality of adult life, I don't often want to escape into the gritty realism of an adult game - you know.

Where the hell is he anyway?
But you're spot on. I as well like to play games as a way of escaping the harsh Siberian winters and enjoy a fantasy of sorts where everyone is a perpetual teenager without the worries of insurance payments and rent. Though I fully admit I still love realistic games as well, I just like them to be more mature, in the actual sense of the word, as in Heavy Rain.

the story and repetitive boring missions are really the only things that bugged me.
o, not to mention the mindless backtracking and spending 5 freaking hours just traveling from point a to point b.
honestly why do games have to do this?
i dont play games so i can walk from one marker to the other, if i did theres plenty more productive, enjoyable, beneficial things i could be doing....
the storys a little too cliche and well overdone.
almost every game these days has you as the hero saving a family member who is sick for some reason.
i mean come on is there not any other story we can come up with?
im really starting to get sick of this industries follow the sheep mentality.
what happened to originality?
o, and most of the missions are boring as bat sh*t.
go here get a fish, take it back to your home.
go here get these ingredient for pola take them back to the library.
go to the mines to get some steel, than take it back to the blacksmith so he can make you a new weapon.
its just so tedious and boring!
thankfully the combat more than makes up for it, the enemy variety is quite good compare to other games.
i just wish they had 2 buttons to attack so you could whip up some combos.
this is the first sword fighting styled game ive ever played that has one and only one attack button.
this is the definition of button masher!
