Report: Call Of Duty: Vietnam A Reality

For a while now, we've all assumed that Treyarch's new Call of Duty, set to launch later this year, would be the first CoD based in Vietnam. But now, we have more concrete evidence that this is indeed a fact.

According to a very plain announcement at VentureBeat, Call of Duty: Vietnam is a reality, and it should be revealed on SpikeTV on Friday night. All of these whispers and rumors about a Vietnam-based CoD began a couple years ago, when we learned that Activision was looking to license Vietnam War-era music for what has only been known as "Call of Duty 7." They tossed a little wrench into the works when we learned about another CoD installment in the works at Sledgehammer, which is rumored to be in a fresh third-person perspective. Some were thinking that would be the one based in Vietnam, but it appears it's Treyarch's project that will play host to the war that helped spark a societal revolution in the late '60s. Some believe the setting is a little too sensitive but that's an argument that could last forever. We're willing to admit that World War II veterans would've felt the same way about all these WWII shooters had they been younger when the video game boom hit.

Well, it was bound to happen. The question is, will gamers respond to the new war for CoD? People didn't think they would when the series went "Modern" but look what happened...

I mentioned before, I really don't feel the need to buy more Call of Duty games; I already have MW1 and WoW. Not surprising I think CoD7 will be well done; with a tweaked engine and improved graphics... but there is so much else to get to.

The 3 FPS that interest me this year are Killzone 3, Medal Of Honour and Crysis 2. Just do not know about the rest. It will be interesting to see how well CoD7 does in the charts...

But how much can people tolerate the CoD games now?

@Snaaaaaake :- granted the Zombie modes are fun in WoW while it lasted. Dunno if they will have Zombie mode in CoD7, they may do with a twist!

Damn, I really want a good Vietnam game, but I hate that kotex's got any kind involvement what-so-ever in it.

And bout Vietnam being too soon, I say no! Hell, just look at "Black Hawk Down", and that Somali conflict was much closer to today than Vietnam was.

What I really want to see though, is some publisher with some real stones, to pick up "6 days in Fallujah"(spelling?).
But I don't want to see it picked up by anti-vision in ANY way, shape, or form.

The problem with Vietnam is the weapons. Gamers went bananas for MW because of multiplayer. They had access to all those great modern weapons, attachments, perks and killstreaks.

W@W banked on MW's success but it is nowhere near as interesting to play on or offline as MW.

Vietnam certainly had weapons a step up from WWII, but once you've had modern, do you really want to go back to upgrading guns made out of wood?

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion but if you can honestly say that either MW game was better than WaW, well, you sir are smoking something.

WaW has a better storyline with better character immersion. You actually feel like you care whether a character lives or dies. Either MW game was just a run and gun, no story shoot 'em up. I will say that trying to beat WaW on veteran was next to impossible with all the grenade chucking AI. I beat both MW games on veteran with my eyes closed.

As far as MP, I don't play that much MP as I don't care for it but I played WaW until I was at about a level 42 then got tired of it. MW2, I played about 40 minutes and was tired of it. The only thing that I think IW got right were the Spec Op missions. Those were awesome.

I will be first in line to get Treyarch's next installment as they know how to do SP and that is what matters. I hope they bring back Co-op, that mode was definitely missed in MW2.

That's 3 out of the hundreds used. The M16 was the most used rifle during the war as was machine guns like the M60. NOT made out of wood.

If guns are made of wood, then they float in water. Which reminds me that ducks also float in water. So if a gun weighs the same as a duck, it's made of wood, and therefore a witch. But when was the last time YOU saw a gun riding a broom?

I now rest my case, that guns are NOT witches and therefore NOT made of wood.

I don't think it's too soon for a vietnam based game, but it is too soon for another CoD. Heck it's too soon for another fps period. I know some people like them, but so many of them come out you can't possibly play them all for a decent amount of time.

I wish they made this many rpgs, then there would at least be enough good ones to never have to worry about running out.

As shallow as it sounds, when I watch Platoon or Full Metal Jacket, it's the music which helps make them so enjoyable for me. I'll eagerly anticipate reviews to see if they do a good job recreating the atmosphere too.

It's possible they could do this very well, however, I'm still holding out for a true recreation of the Battles of Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, New Britian, The Iwo Islands, Guam, Peleliu, and Okinawa. Vietnam could definitely be interesting though.

I too am tired of this franchise but Treyarch at least does a decent job. W@W was much more entertaining and had a way better single player campaign then MW2. I hope they portray history acuratly and leave the PC police at home. Veitnam was ugly but the communist who started it were worse and needed to be stopped. My mother and father inlaw and their family had to leave Laose because the Red Laose were murdering every Hmong person who helped the Americans. Those who didn't flee were murdered by the communist. Hmong people are still oppressed in some parts of south east asia. Some deserved most not.

I really hope they do it right. History needs to be corrected regarding this War. All my child and adult life, we only heard the hippies side of the story. It's time we heard those soldiers story

Actually, Ben, when my grandfather was alive, he used to threaten to break any WWII games I had if I was playing it when he was over. I quickly decided not to play when he was over.

My grandfather fought in WWII as a bomber pilot from 1939-1945 with the RCAF.

I haven't done ANY research (lol) so don't take my word on anything here, but perhaps it's a cold war idea that takes place mostly or partly in Vietnam? Perhaps we'll see a lot of tactical behind the scenes type of play that doesn't take an opportunity to contradict history too much? I bet it will try to tell a story that could easily have never been heard but contribute to historical facts. Just a thought.

Afterall, wasn't Vietnam most of the cold war fighting? From my understanding, aside from Vietnam, the cold war was mostly a political stand-off, was it not?

Any history buffs out there... feel free to correct or reinforce me. This area is not my forte. The only story I'm familiar with about the Cold War is the musical Chess.

i thought the cold war wasn't a war. i thought the cold war was pretty much an arms race to see who could stockpike the most nukes. and the cuban missile crisis and whatnot.

The Cold War was a collection of many wars, Vietnam, the Korean war, the Cuban Missile crisis, the Soviets invasion of Afghanistan as well as the arms race between the US and USSR. It spanned from post WWII all the way until 1985ish.

the next COD should be set in the revolutionary war. stick it to those lobsterbacks.

and you'd have to pick your shots, twitchy onliners! reloading takes 3 minutes! if your bullet even hits what it's aiming at, because rifling hasn't been invented yet! lol, that'd learn em.

Actually there was a civil war game by the History Channel that had muskets and it wasn't that bad. Pretty much after you shoot the first shoot you run at the enemy with a bayonet.

FWIW Musketeers could fire 2 shots per minute; a skilled rifleman could fire 3 per minute.

But that's still a long way from what the circle-strafers expect in a shooter.

There were actually 2 PS3 Civil War games by the History Channel.

I have one of them, "CW:Secret Missions", & it was fun using the iron-clad ship to rain down cannonballs at the town as your heading up & down the river.

But I don't have the other one, & at the moment, I forget it's subtitled name.
