Does The Woman In Your Life Play Video Games?
I've done articles on girl gamers before and in fact, one of them generated such an outpouring of feedback from female gamers everywhere that my inbox exploded over the weekend. But I've been wondering: we all tend to assume that a guy gamer's fantasy is to find a really cute girl who is also into his favorite hobby. And as the industry grows and the years wear on, this is becoming less and less of a novelty.
So the question is, does your significant other or girlfriend play video games? And if so, are you responsible for getting her into this form of entertainment or did she already have a big ol' game collection when you met her? And if you are currently without a lady, do you want to find someone who shares your enjoyment of the interactive video medium? ...how many different names can I come up with for "video games?" Anyway, the goal is to see if the old-school "fantasy" remains the same for both long-time gamers and gamers from a new generation. Personally, I'd have difficulty finding anything wrong with a girl who plays games but at the same time, perhaps there's something a little boring about being with someone who's too much like you. I mean, I suppose there's no shortage of conversation due to your shared interests but sometimes, there are particular differences between couples that prove to be the most appealing and, well, "spark-inducing." So, what's your take on this? Anybody ever date a chick who loved games but still turned out to be intolerable?
I suppose my problem is that my generation never really had girl gamers. That would be like guys playing with Barbie dolls; it just wasn't done that often. Therefore, women around 30 years of age still don't understand gaming and see it as a kid's hobby...but then again, I've outlined all this before. I'm not about to start again. ;)

She wants a PSP or DS. I may buy her one soon. Other than that, she mainly likes to watch me play games instead. ALthough we had logged a few hours playing LittleBig Planet together, she loves that game.
Plus she has heaps of guitar heros at home, i think she could be influenced to become more of a gamer after she moves out of home.

*World does not advocate violence against women... in real life.
I'd love to have my next girl be a gamer too, we could attend midnight release parties and whatnot. We come from the same generation Ben so I feel ya. 28-30 year old women are likely to still look at you askance when they find out that is your main hobby instead of say wakeboarding or skydiving or something more outdoorsy.

23 and still single is pretty lame to me, mostly cos it IS me. Unfortunately I have no confidence to take the initiative AND I don't drink. Hate bars.
Meeting a single gamer girl is like finding a yellow needle in a haystack. All the other coloured needles are found and taken, but the yellow one for me is just damn near impossible.

But I'm looking, and I have a couple of major requirements for my next relationship(in order)
1. She must like, and willing to ride on the back of my Harley. And if she owns her own, that's a major plus(but she must send me her picture....of the bike, that is). LOL
2. She must like gaming, or at least tolerate the fact that I have 20 consoles & hand-helds.
3. High-maintenance women "NEED NOT APPLY" (I've already had my fill of them over the years(same #3 rule applies for any Gold-Digger wanna-be's).

She's a dance dance revolution and guitar hero phenom.
She loves the old school x-x-o-square-triangle games like parappa, jammer lammy and space channel 5
plus she is hot.

As for console games, not really. Trivial Pursuit and Buzz Quiz are about as far as she'll go. She might be interested in other games but I hog the PS3 so we'll never know.

To answer Ben question though, she used to play a bit before I met her. She had finished the original Prince of Persia if that is any indication. She was not a gamer, but she at least understood and enjoyed games. I hadn't really thought of it before, but it has indeed been a great plus in our relationship.

Although, I will say I do own a Wii although it's only really for party play. I'm not too much into the Wii itself, but it's for fun with the family and friends. I'm more into the PS3. Some of my fav titles are: UC2, Dragon Age: Origins (Not so much awakening, wasn't my cup o' joe), MW2, Oblivion, Heavy Rain, GoW Series, SH series, and basically anything you can throw at me. RPGs are definately my thing but I adore shooters, FPS and all, as well. Only exception: I strongly (I know, racism!) dislike the 360.

They still only count casual gamers in such polls and studies; i.e., anyone who might play 20 minutes of Solitaire on the PC before bed, or who plays a few Flash games at work. So then, it appears as if girls come close to the guys.
But just stand outside a GameStop for a day. Figure out the percentage for yourself...I think we all know what it is. Perhaps unfortunately.

I think you're absolutely right about that male to female ratio.
I'm in my 5 local GS/EB store about 4 to 5 times a week & I've only seen a ratio of about 16 females to 1,000 males in there all year.
And every time, the woman's reading off the game from her written shopping list, either getting the game as a gift for a friend, or it's for her own son.
Most of the time, the woman will ask questions that let's me know she's not really a gamer, questions either about the game itself, or what system it's supposed to be for. And even after she get's the info, she still seems puzzled. Plus, the majority of the time, she's asking for a WI or DS game.
And it's even worse in my local mom & pop Bandit Video games store, because I've never seen a woman in there, ever.
My own feeling is it's a real shame that we don't have a lot more woman gamers(along with more cute female motorcycle riders too, but I've done my share to boost their ridership, by helping to teach about 10 of them to ride).
Anyway, in the last couple years, I have noticed that slowly, there's more & more female gamers on gaming sites now, so at least that's a big plus for future gaming percentages.
(OK, all you gaming cuties 18 & over out there, go get yourself a Harley, & call me in the morning)

What worked in getting my girlfriend into games were the co-op ones. Anything that is co-op, she want's to play. Something about teaming up and taking on the world together gets them excited. This way you share the victory or defeat with her.

she is more of the casual facebook gamer. she has her farm and some pet on there. i dont really care for facebook at all nor those games. i recently got her to try god of war 3 and she is having a lot of fun. she doesnt like to watch me play but when she is playing its all good. she really wants to play heavy rain and even played the demo a few times.
she has a serious orientation problem with the controller. i tell her r1 she presses r2 or l2 or l1. anything but the button she is supposed to press.
she grew up on n64 and knows sonic and mario type games. she gets lost on a lot of this generations games. i think they are to complicated. she likes simpler games from the psn a lot. zombie apocalyse, zuma and even bought uno and bloons cuz she wanted to try them.
she watched me play bioshock 2 and now she talks about wanting to try it. she watches me play mag and wants to try that. i let her try the training part of mag and she did horrible. most of it comes back to her not knowing the controller well enough.

Although her and I used to play Burnout on the PS2 all the time before the PS3 days, so I was a little choked when Paradise City launched with only single player. We used to have a great time with head to head road rage events all the time, now we can't do that anymore.
When I met her, she owned an original Xbox which was cool, but she stilled loved her Mario Cart more. Her biggest complaint is that the new controls have too many buttons..

I didn't really get into certain games until I met my husband, he introduced me to final fantasy first, I was more into the FPS, and tomb raider stuff like that when I met him, he expanded my collection, now I'm a bigger console gamer than he is, he's more into PC gaming (WOW. Starcraft) he's trying to get me to try starcraft (beta) since I got my code but I would rather just play on the PS3 I am not a fan of PC gaming.
@ worldendswithme never let a girl win, we don't like men who can't stand a little competition, now if she's new to it, introduce her to something like LBP or something on the PSN :) start something simple, or if she's anything like me and loves to kill things Naughty bear is releasing soon LOL jk.

I can kick some booty on MW2, Guitar Hero (I play expert, mind you), and I own at wii (Big accomplishment there, eh?). Let's just say I'm a hardcore gamer girl and my sisters, yes my older sisters, are to blame for getting the controller in my hands. The Mario theme song was my constant lullaby the moment I came home from the hospital. So, in other words, I'm the biggest nerd and tech junkie of a girl you could possibly meet.

I honestly never had any gfs that I would call gamers. I'm 23 but I like older women. So I usually date women that are 2-15 yrs older than me.
Some have just watched me played. Some were totally uninterested. But there were some would play a few games with me like LBP, Tekken, and I even had one play Fallout 3 once.
But they all seem to lack the hand-eye coordination w/ the controller. In my experience, most of them stopped playing games after the controllers got analog sticks, so they don't understand controllers that have them. They just can't use it. I was hilarious when one of my ex's was playing Halo 1 (she just moveed the LS and had the character strafing everywhere b/c she couldn't turn him with the RS) but I got concerned after I saw the exact same issue with future girls I let play shooters or any game that required 2 sticks to play. Its like they can't use both thumbs! The left works fine but the right just doesn't move.
However, I do know a couple of legit girl gamers. They play all the hardcore games that use controllers (not the Wii). They play online. They pre-order games. And they can hold great gaming convo's w/ u if u test their knowledge. Hell, one of them put me on Katamiri! But all of them are either overweight (I'm 6'2" 175, I can't date a girl as heavy as me), or they're just not my type.
I guess having a gf - that appreciates games as much as I do - on team would be nice...I'll prolly never find one doe. The two women I'm talking to now are ages 28 and 41....I don't c it happening lol.
Plus I like the fact that I'm the only 1 playing games in the house. So when I want to play my game, I dont have to worry about some hot chick hogging my PS3.

I know a lot of girls around 30 that game. Whether it's WoW or Mario, they'll play something. I think that the main issue is that most SINGLE girls don't game much. They'd much rather buy a couple of new outfits than a game system. Girls who are dating someone would tend let their boyfriend spend his money on the system, then play it. That's how it always seems to work for me, anyway.

My wife has a DS and puzzle games, that's about all the non-killing I can think of.
Maybe the Lego games, Lego Batman, etc, but even that has mild "killing" if that's what you call blowing up some lego guys.
I'd start scrolling through the PS3 demos, and see if anything catches your eye.

Does she like puzzles or anything that makes her think things through? Lumines is one of my favorites. There are many great puzzle games on PSN that you can have her try. Start downloading some of those demos.
Does she mind fantasy violence, the kind with swords or magic? If so there are a whole slew of titles she might enjoy.
There is always sports titles as well. Maybe have her team up with you in a short basketball or hockey match. Most importantly, just be patient with her.

If you can play PS2 games, you need to check "Okami" for her.
It's a very good game, & I believe she'll love the artfulness of it too.
A small bit about the game:
The game is a art masterpiece. It's very easy to play & you use the controls to "paint" your desired powers.
You possess the power of a God, but face the world in the form of a Wolf. You must overcome the odds against you. You have the power to create & destroy.
Faced with your greatest challenge, to restore order & beauty to a world laid barren by evil.
Here's a lot more info on "Okami" w/some pics(although the Wikipedia pics don't do justice to the true art & color palette in the game, itself).

Ya try the Lego games, my wife and I play Lego Batman.
Also we play Ultimate Alliance and Ultimate Alliance 2. If she likes some comic characters, those might work for her.
So the list:
Lego Batman
Lego Starwars
Lego Indiana Jones
Mod Nation Racers
Little Big Planet
Ultimate Alliance 1&2 (maybe)
that's about all I got.

Anything that was split screen or some form of co-op she wanted to play with me. I always complimented her progression and only gave her tips as she needed them. I never tried to overload her with too much information, that just discourages her. When playing a shooter, the only thing she needs to know is how to move, aim, and fire. Once she got that stuff down, I introduced her to the other buttons - changing weapons, jumping, ducking, grenades, etc.
How to get your girlfriend into video games;
First of all, you need to make sure the conditions are right. Don't have any left over chores sitting around that needs to be done. Finish that last batch of laundry, the plates piling up in the sink, vacuum the carpet, dispose the waste that's overflowing in the trash can. Complete whatever task it is you have lying around waiting to be done. Once there is "nothing" to do, the time is right.
Remember, not every girl wants to only play dating sims or my little pony games. They want blood and gore just as much as the next person. The trick is knowing what type of female companion you have. A good indicator is the type of movies or TV shows they are into. Do they like to think (not too many don't)? Maybe an RPG or RTS would be their liking. Do they enjoy action films? Possibly an FPS player in hiding. Do they like drama? Heavy Rain will keep her busy for hours. Once you think you have an idea of a genre or two it's time to figure out which game.
Think back to all the different games you used to enjoy. See, you need to think like them. They are fresh to the gaming realm and should start where you started (well for most of you gamers out there). I think anyone can get their girlfriend or wife to play video games. It's just a matter of not overwhelming them with too much information at once and using positive reinforcement. Rather than playing against your woman in a 1v1 match in Madden or race her in a game of Need for Speed, try something that allows team play.
Think of it as inviting her into the hot tub. A woman will like to expose herself slowly to the hot water. Do the same with the game she's about to play. Don't try and explain what every single button does. Just the mandatory ones she needs to know. Pay attention to her progression and be sure to compliment her performance. Notice when she does something amazing (at least amazing to her) and cheer her on like you would any of your buddies. Above most, laugh with her, not at her. Point out the mistakes you are making. She'll feel better about messing up knowing that the "gamer" showing her the ropes still misses the mark to from time to time.
Great co-op games for this are team sports like basketball, hockey, or action games like Marvel Alliance, Dynasty Warriors, Resident Evil 5, Army of Two, and upcoming Lost Planet 2. Be sure to start on the easiest setting available. If you think you have a good game in mind but it doesn't offer co-op play, try taking turns.
The next part is probably one of the harder parts to do. Set a time limit. Try to keep this time limit to yourself. Say maybe about 30 minutes to 1 hour maximum. It's better to stop the activity before she becomes bored from it. Get her to say she wants to keep playing. The sooner she admits she's having fun and wants to play more, the easier it will be for her to come suggest playing a game with you.
Continue this for a while and you will find that she also enjoys games too. I will warn those out there to be care of what you wish for. Now that my girl games, when ever I look into buying games I have to consider a second copy for her own gaming system setup. If you thought they (women) were expensive before, get her involved in your activities.
Best of luck and I'd like to know if anyone else has had success with this method.

If you've tried the above and you are still having problems getting her to even pick up a controller, you could always attempt bargaining with her. Let her know that you will gladly enjoy spending time with her during an activity she would like to share, in return for a 30 minute game session. Make sure she is aware that you want her on your team. That you want her to play with you against the computer. Make her feel needed and wanted. They love that.
She'll be more likely to give it a go if she knows it's to help her man out.
Also, if you are a woman trying to get a man to play a game with you - this method could help you too.

She also likes LittleBigPlanet. I just recently showed her the ModNation Racers PSP demo. That sparked her interest in the PS3 version. She finished Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts 2 before i did and shes anxiously awaiting the 3rd title.
I didn't introduce her to video games. Shes has 3 younger brothers so shes been around them but she said she didn't really start playing them until she met me. So i guess i deserve some credit. :) She lived in Japan during the Final Fantasy X launch. She said it was crazy over there.

I ask because even though my wife watches from time to time, I sure as heck can't control myself and not play until she's available to watch.

It is hard to not go on with it as we don't have all that much time together between work and the baby, but I owe it to her to wait. As previously said, it all about helping the marriage last ! ;)
Mind, a friend just bought me Super Street Fighter IV, so I got something else to do while waiting. So yes, friends can help the marriage too !

I was not allowed to play Heavy Rain unless she was there. I am always playing multiple games at once, so it was all good. Plus, I figured it best not to be pushy since she far from being a gamer.
Sonattine...
Nice man. I always have believed that doing things "together" as a couple goes along way in maintaining a relationship.

Apparently people born somewhere around 1985 or later are more likely to have grown up with video games, and more likely to play them as a hobby.
So it should come as little surprise that I wound up marrying a girl 5 years younger than me who brought a Dreamcast and Genesis to the relationship.

It's gotten to a point where I really don't mention video games around people. All the people, girls and guys, that I know usually talk about music and random stuff. When they do talk about video games, I jump right in and amaze them with my knowledge. Which makes me feel really left out.
I do know this one girl who is dating someone I know. She is really into Final Fantasy XIII right now and is playing it non-stop.

When the 360 and Ps3 came out, We played through Gears 1 & 2, Army of Two 1, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Fought in Soul Calibur 4, Got drunk and played Rock Band/Guitar Hero, Street Fighter 4, Virtua Fighter 5, Grand Theft Auto 4 co-op and online, and for some unknown reason she doesnt play any FPS except Resistance 2 and Borderlands.
Now when she games by herself: Heavenly Sword, Bayonetta (360), BloodRayne, N3 Ninety Nine Nights, Rumble Roses XX, Golden Axe Beast Rider, WET, City of Heroes (PC), Sims 3, anything on her PSP, and even those flash games on the PC!
She LOVES to watch me play certain games too, like The God of War series, Metal Gear Series, Heavy Rain (I couldnt play it if she WASNT around or she'd kick my ass), and Uncharted 2!
*Funny Story* We've been married for 2 years this month. We have yet to take a honeymoon. We were planning to take ours very soon and have her parents go in half on it with us. She got me a brand new TV stand for my HDTV. Long story short, while I was transferring the TV to the new stand she knocked it over and cracked my screen. I was crushed. She felt so bad, she postponed the honeymoon, and had her parents just put their half towards replacing my TV. She said she knew that was my "escape" (playing games) and she felt REALLY bad. Couldn't have asked for a better wife!

She still enjoys racing games and is looking forward to GT5. She loved LBP, I think she'll love Mod Nation Racers - may be another two copy game...She liked watching a play through of White Knight Chronicles, but I think the whole georama thing appealed more than the questing. She still plays Madden, less though since the PS3 version is missing so many features compared to the PS2 versions. She was addicted to Civilization Revolutions, and there have been other games along the way.
It's pretty cool having a wife that tolerates football and video games, it's freaking phenomenal to have a wife that loves football and video games as much as mine does. Only problem is, she loves the Colts and I'm a Redksins man.

@Nynja,
I play Madden as a simulation game - franchise mode. I don't do the superstar thing, or play as the QB or whoever. But the strategy of Franchise mode has me hooked - plus I love seeing my team win the Superbowl when I successfully guide them there...

i think it's because i spend so much time trying to perfect my combos every night. she doesn't like disgaea either, for similar reasons. :P
yeah, its fun to have a gamer girl, even if she can't game as much since we've had our daughter. :)

Most of them are pretentious*
For the most part they'll act as if they actually like games but they're only really into 1 or 2 series (Tekken, Final Fantasy)
Rarely will you ever meet a gamer babe which will actually list Motorstorm, Street Fighter, Resistance, and Gran Turismo in the same breath
Not saying that liking one or two games/series doesn't make you a gamer. But it just feels very pretentious (limiting) to me. Specially with the variety PS offers

My wife on the otherhand sees gaming as an addiction and something I do to avoid speaking to her (she even gets annoyed when I play when she is asleep!).
She does join in during party nights playing Buzz Quiz TV, Singstar and The Beatles Rockband. Anything else with the controller is too much.
She says things like "you love that stupid console more than me" and "I wish I was born a Playstation so you would talk to me more!".
So game time is pretty limited otherwise I get the scowl. She sees it as a kids hobby.
Obviously she has a point if I was gaming whilst she was cooking or putting the kids to bed. Usually I try and fit it in when she isnt in or awake.
40 hours into Fallout 3 at the moment so she may have a point. That game is impacting on my work/life/wife/gaming balance...
I also have Oblivion on the shelf. Too scared to play it!

I have been married for over 18 years, and the one thing I always have strived to do was to make sure my wife does not feel threatened by my Playstation. My wife is my best friend afterall.
I am constantly talking to her about my gaming. I even ask her if I am playing "too much" as well.
Communication as always, is key in marriage. Especially when it involves doing seperate things from each other.
Based on my experience and my happy marriage, I recommend that you find the 50/50 balance with her and your hobby. Split your gaming time with (for example) watching her favorite TV show with her. Things like that go a long way my friend.
I hope I didn't come off to preachy, but after reading your comment, I felt compelled to respond.

Yip, communication is the key. Re-reading my comment I do come across pretty critical of my wife. Its not that bad...
Obviously being married 10 years with a 6 year old girl and a 4 year old boy quality time most definately needs to be shared between everyone.
I was more amazed at all the people with video game playing girlfriends. I always thought it was a 99% male hobby.

I get about 10pm-midnight to play games usually, and then play a bit on the weekends when she is at work and I am not.
She does play, but I play more than her, and she doesn't play shooters, or games like Grand Theft Auto or God of War... so I gotta do those in my allotted time.

So, after three years of marriage, she has slowly started to game more. She likes puzzle games, but she also gets into fighters like Soul Caliber and racers like Burnout Paradise. Plus I bought her a DSi that she loves. She, too, likes watching me play games like GOWIII, Uncharted 2, or Heavy Rain.

She loves playing Guitar Hero & Rock Band on the PS3, and she's basically as good as I am on both guitar and drums, and she can play pretty much any song on expert on the guitar. She also loves RPGs and RTS games, mainly on PC but also some PS3 games, and used to love playing Diablo II and the Command & conquer / Red Alert series. I remember we played through one of the first action/RPGs Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom on the PS3 on co-op together, not that great a game, but overall fun still, especially playing co-op together. We also played through the PS2 game Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance together which was a lot of fun, unfortunately we haven't been able to get hold of the second game yet.
Right now she's constantly playing LOTRO (Lord of the Rings Online) which sometimes gets me on my nerves as it can be hopeless to get her to stop playing :) Of course, to her credit I can be the same way with other games so I guess we're equally hopeless :p
Unfortunately a lot of the games coming out nowadays are either "first-person" or very camera-angle-3Dish which she can't play because it makes her ill with all the camera rotating stuff, so a lot of AAA-type PS3 games she can't/won't play. Even though they're otherwise great games, she'll probably never play Uncharted 2 because there's too much camera movement going on in some scenes, although she did seem to enjoy playing God of War III...
