2K Announces Winner Of $1 Million MLB 2K10 Contest

Well, as impossible as it sounded, it was bound to happen.

2K Sports has announced that 24-year-old Wade McGilberry of Semmes, Alabama has won the unprecedented cash price of $1,000,000 for being the very first player to throw a verified perfect game in MLB 2K10. Available to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 owners, McGilberry managed to turn away 27 consecutive batters to win the ultimate prize. He said:

"It was actually my wife who convinced me to go for it. I never thought I’d actually win a million dollars playing a video game, it’s all still sinking in for me. The game itself was fantastic – I’m glad I bought it either way – but I have to say, this is a nice return on my investment."

Um, yeah, I guess it is. Vice president of 2K Sports marketing Jason Argent said they "had no idea what to expect" from this contest, but there was an incredible response from fans and great media buzz. ...well, if you dangle a million bucks in front of everyone just to play a video game, you're bound to get a reaction. But this competition had plenty of rules; it started on March 2 and ended on May 1, participants had to play in MLB Today mode, use the default gameplay settings denoted by official contest rules, record the effort via camera or digital video recorder, and all eligible entrants had to submit of copy of that recording for verification. And to ensure they weren't behind hosed, 2K teamed up with Twin Galaxies International, the worldwide authority on video game world records.

I suppose we're supposed to say congratulations but it's hard to do when one's face is so very green...the color of greenbacks, coincidentally.

Dude that is awesome, I never thought someone would do it under the specific rules they had, but thats just great.

Now if only we could have something like this for an rpg, then I might win something, other than that tho I'm probably outta luck. LOL

Congrats to Wade for winning.

Crap. Had I knew there was a prize, I would have picked up the game!

Guess I definitely won't be getting it now.

Kind of off topic (but not really), I was reminded of the Documentary "King of Kong" when it was mentioned that Twin Galaxies was involved in the verification of the scores.

Maybe it was just me, but the integrity of Twin Galaxies seemed more than just a little suspect when viewed through the lense of the documentary maker. Seems a little foolish to be putting a $1mil payout in the hands of Twin Galaxies.

Speaking of King of Kong, have you ever considered doing a review of movies/documentaries about Video Games? Sorry if you have and I missed it. :D

That is awesome for him. I haven't played a baseball game since Base Wars for the NES(which I would LOVE to see a remake of, BTW).

Last baseball game I played was Bases Loaded for the NES. That game was the bees knees. Could pitch a perfect game and home run against my cousin in that game every time we played.

But in Base Wars your team were friggin' robots with guns and laser swords! No baseball game can touch that. I'd love to see that with this gen. Fighting robots FTW!

The only team sports related game I have ever enjoyed playing was Speedball. Did have some fun on the Genesis at a friends house with some baseball game though.

I loved 3D Baseball for the PlayStation. So sue me.

Before that, I think maybe RBI Baseball...but that's it.

Congrats to the winner!

But what I really want to know is what console did he win it on.

It would be great to find out it was on the PS3 so Kevin Butler could do a new commercial.....

Hey Ben, I'm starting to see the benefits to the Bayonetta fighting system, I just have to add a camera tweak with my right thumb when things try to go out of whack.

Bayonetta like I always said is the illegal child to dmc1, it's better than 2-4 combined . The fighting system is hella sweet world

Yeah it's just kinda the wackness for the PS3 version because sometimes the framerate drops a ton and I can't chain properly, or the camera goes astray with certain moves. I had to seriously adjust to that.

I never played much of the PS3 version so I don't know how much extra work you have to go through, but I imagine you have to in order to expose the greatness. It's too bad for PS3 owners, really.

That is interesting a guy can win a mill playin a game. The world is changing lol. The last time I played a baseball game was when ea called their games triple play baseball. I like that name over mvp or whatever it is called now.

jesus christ id hate to see how much time he put into that.
id imagine a worn out console and TV by now.
wonder how much time it took him.
its amazing what extent people are willing to travel to win a competition.
like the easter show recently there was a EA world cup tournament and people from all over the world spent thousands of dollars just so they could come join in.
wish i had that type of cash to piss away!

Well, lets see.

March 2nd to May 1st = 60 days

Since it is not mentioned what day he achieved his feat, we can only assume the worst case scenario, that his was the only perfect game played, and it happened at 11:59pm on may may 1st.

Also since we don't know, we have to assume another extreme scenario of no job and no need for sleep.

60 days x 24 hours = 1440 hours.

He could have spend no more than 1440 hours minus 1 minute on attempting this feat.

With that time investment, he made no less than $694 per hour. Also likely, is that the guy has a job and sleeps. If we can assume 8 hours of work per day 5 days a week, and 8 hours of sleep per night, then we are looking at about 616 hours invested for a pay rate of about $1623 per hour, if every moment not spent working or sleeping was playing the game, and he used all 60 days to win.

That's pretty impressive, I had a prefect game a couple of times with Justin Verlander and it always get broken up by a dude with a crap average with two outs in their half of the 9th.

I don't know what I would do with a million dollars.
