Red Dead Redemption Starts To Wow Critics Worldwide

We're expecting great things from Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption, but there has always been a lingering skepticism based on a distinct lack of fantastic Western-themed video games.

However, perhaps we can lay our fears to rest now that a few reviews have already been leaked to the Internet. Not surprisingly, they're from two print publications; one from here in the US and the other from the UK: Game Informer has given the hotly anticipated title a 9.75 out of 10 (which is presumably a 10 and a 9.5, as they typically hand out two scores for big reviews) and according to CVG, UK magazine GamesTM has awarded RDR a 9/10 and says the game's world is "as expansive and inviting as any we've explored." It's the authenticity and technical accomplishments that seem to shine through, and there may even be more depth to the gameplay than initially expected: "Redemption is a game unafraid to mete out its ideas slowly, meaning that you're still learning new tricks several hours into the game." And lastly, there's a quote that impresses us, simply because it's relatively bold:

"While Rockstar San Diego may find some difficulty in filling its open expanses with interesting and emergent play, it does imbue it with a stark beauty and compelling narrative that makes Redemption more than just an allusion to cinema, but a piece of work that can confidently stand next to it."

You can bet that we're totally psyched for this bad boy and personally, I can't wait to give it a shot. Any of you have any remaining suspicions? Or are we all fully convinced that RDR will be a must-buy and a must-play?

Is this any surprise?! GI gave it a well deserved 9.75/10 for a reason. I cannot wait for this Western Epic!

If this isn't your type of game I can see that, but this will be amazing. There is so much to explore, so much to do, definitely worth $60. I am convinced this game will be pretty awesome, I believe the hundreds of people that pre-ordered it will agree.

I still want to see some PS3 footage first. Considering that all the trailers out there look a bit washed out. Considering that they most likely used Xbox gameplay, does this mean the PS3 will be even more washed out, or finally a superior a triple A multiplatform game?

it's been a must-buy and a must-play for about 6 months now... and now it's only a week away!!

i'm passing on mod nation racers and probably a handful of other summer releases because, something tells me i will still be playing this game well into the summer...

Has anybody seen any PS3 footage? Do we know what type of a port the PS3 is getting? Or is the "dev" console the PS3. All I can find are reviews/videos of what I assume is the 360 version (since they don't always specify the platform).

I love the idea of the game and will definitely get it once I know the PS3 version is a good game (you never know with ports, if this is a ported version).

at first i was not interested (talking 2 yrs back)...
then i gained interest and eventually was fully psyched (around beginning of this year). had the pre-order confirm button several times ready...

now, after extensively researching, thinking and fantasizing about it (as well as think about allllll the games that are coming out 2010) i suddenly lost interest and kept only a vague hint of intrigue towards it...

I'll wait a bit more. no pre-order for me. screw the perks...

I just recently went on a trophy hunt over the past month to make way for this game.

I nailed the Platinum on NFS Shift, Saboteur, and finished all trophies on Dragon Age Awakening.

Not only will singleplayer game keep me busy, the multiplayer looks amazing.

As much as I think I'll like this game, somehow the excitement is not there. (Too busy with God of War 1, 2 & 3 goodness perhaps?) However, my roommate has it preordered, so I'll be checking it out when it releases.

I'm pretty convinced it's a must buy and a must play. I just love the idea of the Western setting, that's always been so rare in video games. The fact that it sounds like a fantastic game in addition to the fantastic setting, yeah...I guess I better put the crowbar to the ol' wallet and buy this thing :)

It was another western gunfighter game that I thought was pretty good for it's time too, although the 2005 graphic's weren't the greatest then..

Game looks pretty good. Im definitely excited about it. I really get frustrated watching trailers of it and the animations R* used in the trailers, same with GTA4 so its not just this game. It all looks like slow motion to me, or like they missed a frame.

Regardless im very excited about this game! Mostly the co-op though!

I am realy excited about this game. I am 100% sure that this will be one of "THE" "BEST GAMES OF THE YEAR"... as well as GT5. I can't wait even thou I have been waiting for mounths and it only being about a week away, Man I'm stocked. I can't wait to go down to GS and hand them my recite for the red box and reading the manuel on the ride home... as I do to all games. This will be a very Awesome game.

I would luv to preorder in amazon for the awesome preorder bonus,but the gameplay videos I already saw looked really slow,no Ps3 version footage and no of demo doesn't make me feel secure ordering this.

I've done little research into this game myself, but as to the questions regarding platform performance differences. If it's using the same engine as GTA4 then the 360 build should have the edge. Not only did the 360 version of GTA4 maintain a more consistent frame-rate, it also rendered at a higher resolution and used a much better implementation of anti-aliasing. The Digital Foundry is a good place to go for this kind of info, because it's where I'm basing my findings.

just seems a little strange that this is coming out the same day as mod nation racers and alan wake and both of those have reviews all over the place!

ill remain on the fence with this till its in my console playing.

you got to lay off the pipe or something and stop putting words in my mouth.

both GTAIV and midnight club sucked to me.
GTAIV for the reason ive explained a million times i dont play games to be a freaking taxi driver.
midnight club was very buggy, the controls were unresponsive, the cars were way too twitchy, and the game was repetitive as bat sh*t just like GTAIV.

R* seem to have a trend going with their games.
copy and paste.
make one level, and paste it 10 times and wallah game done!

you can tell in your way of speaking that you are already going into to this as something you won't like, not just by this post, but previous posts as well.

And we went over this before, GTA4 first couple of missions are taxi cab missions, from then on you never have to do one again. You keep saying you dont play games to be one, well FFS get past mission 2 or 3 and you won't have to worry about those anymore

Out of 85+ missions that are story based, 4 of them of mandatory cab missions. Choose another reason for hating the game besides that one, its old as fck dude

Already have the pre-order set, now all we can do is hope the PS3 version is at least equal to the 360 version, and even if it's not, I'll see y'all in the west, we can have a PSXE animal abuse posse and go kill us some boar and bears, I kid, I like animals, really I do. My only fears are, they've only shown 360 footage so far so as far as what everyone is becoming paranoid about is the fact that no one knows the condition of the PS3 version and are jumping to the conclusion that it must be inferior and even some random dude that I don't trust(CheapAssGamer) is making the internet go crazy by him saying that a 'reliable source' told him that the PS3 version of RDR is 'significantly inferior'...

I hope Rockstar shows footage of the PS3, or that PS3 is superior as FF13 was to it, or that they're both equal, unsure which console was the lead platform but I doubt Rockstar would just make a horrible port of RDR for the PS3 fanbase...

Hope everyones fears can be laid to rest on the 18th...
