White Knight Chronicles 2 To Feature Updated Original?

Wow, if this is true and everything works out, let's hope more publishers decide to treat the release of sequels in this way.

"Bang for your buck" is always a concern for most gaming consumers, and maybe that's why Level 5 wishes to get on your good side: according to Andriasang, it appears they will include an updated version of the original White Knight Chronicles in the box with the sequel. This would be just plain awesome and it makes sense, too, as WKC2 is a true follow-up story and takes place one year after the events of the first title. The info comes from "officially distributed materials" so we're all hoping it's reliable and furthermore, Game Jouhou is reporting that another retailer says the version of WKC featured with the sequel "will be updated to White Knight 2 specifications in terms of gameplay and mechanics." So in other words, you'll be looking at the complete saga with the same mechanics throughout; a simply grand idea that, if utilized in other sequel projects, would make many a gamer very, very happy. Imagine if Naughty Dog had released Uncharted 2: Among Thieves with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune; same price, and the original game would be upgraded to play just like the sequel...how freakin' cool would that be?

Take any series and apply this idea to it, and I can pretty much guarantee it's a win-win situation, provided the publisher doesn't decide to charge $100 for it, or something.

This is such a great idea. WKC2 was already on my immediate purchase list, it's going to leap to the top of the pre-order list once this feature is officially announced.

Oh, can you imagine the collector's edition version of this baby?

Uncharted 2 already did this a little bit - sort of - with the Uncharted 1 DLC. Suddenly there is a spark of hope in my mind... Could Naughty Dog consider doing a Uncharted Trilogy pack with Uncharted 3 bundled with Uncharted 1 & 2 both using the Uncharted 3 graphics engine? That would be an easy buy, even though I already have the first two games.

my gf only has the second one, but I'd buy Uncharted 3 if they did that most definitly!! More games do need to do something like that, especially a game with an on going story that spans between sequals. I would say imagine Twisted Metal, but that's a lot more games, lol. Well, they could package all the old ones and Twisted Metal Black on 1 Bluray discand put the new Twisted Metal on it's own disc... :p

First thing I thought of while reading this was that this would boost uncharted's sales. But at the same time I don't even think they would need to do anything to the graphics. Just the fact that you have the whole story there would be enough... but on that note, does anyone know how difficult it would be to re-release a game with a more updated engine?

Now THAT is awesome! I never got the first one, but if they do that with White Knight Chronicles 2, I'll buy it. That makes it 100% worth it!! They could never do that with the 360, yet another reason I love the PS3 so much, lol.

white knight is so awesome I'd pay the $20 for it so I could play it now and then get wkc2 and replay the first one with new engine and then go right into the second one. $20 for white knight is a steal, I had no idea it was that cheap anywhere.

$20 is a good price for a game... especially since WKC2 isn't releasing until July 8th in Japan and the U.S. doesn't even have a release date yet.

In fact in response to this news I wouldn't be surprised if they made us wait a little longer to get WKC2 if they believe it still has sales left in the original... kinda like what they did with tony hawk pro skater 2 on the N64

yeah, i'm thinking the same thing. or it could be their way of getting white knight to be multiplatform, which i hope never happens. their plans could be to release 2 for US stand alone for ps3 while they release both games for the 360 on 10 discs.

Well yeah the game is great, but will you really play through it again just because the graphics are enhanced? I think you'll be too busy with WKC2 by then.

Anyway, I don't regret buying WKC, no sir, but I do kinda have that "I shoulda waited" feeling now.

While i feel a bit duped for spending $60 on version just released in the US this is still a great i idea. Something like this would have been great for Uncharted. The controls are more refined and user friendly in Uncharted 2 then they are Drakes Fortune.

Still need to finish White Knight. Might have to wait for a rainy day. 3d Dot should be here today!!

I'm thinking heavily about going to Best Buy and snagging a copy of 3D Dot today after work, and I also need to finish WKC...I just can't decide if 3D Dot is a justified purchase. On the one hand it is cheaper than a normal new game but on the other from all the videos I have seen it looks like a bunch of minigames based on old RPG classics. What to do, what to do?

Its the closest thing well get to a old school Zelda game on the PS3. From what I've read and people are telling me, its more like Zelda then any classic RPG. If you liked the old school Zelda's like A Link to the Past or Minish Cap then I'm sure youll get enjoyment out of 3D Dot.

I don't know why you think 3DDGH is a bunch of minigames, coverton341. It's pretty much a classic 2D Zelda clone with some minor RPGish elements thrown in. That said, there are *tons* of more subtle references in the dialogue and so forth to a lot of classic games, but it's not reflected in the gameplay so much.

All right, that pretty much seals the deal for my wallet. I thought it was a bunch of minigames because of some clips I have seen on the net, I haven't been following the game too closely but someone told me it was pretty much old school Zelda done on the PS3 with a weird twist. I was intrigued, and looked up a few videos and was confused by what I saw.

i'd say its worth the purchase but i'm also getting the feeling that its going to seem short. but after saying that, looking at the trophies, replayability is where its at. i know i'm gonna play this game more than once, im just not sure if theres different endings for doing specific stuff. If anything, its a great game to hold me off till modnation racer. too bad i suck at making stuff in games, but i still buy them. littlebigplanet, 3ddot game heroes, and next is modnation.

I'm not sure how that would work unless the upgrade could be in the form of a dl patch. I doubt that would be the case. I guess it's intended as an incentive to go and purchase WKC2 and boost the sales numbers.

This makes sense for titles where the original is fairly old and can no longer be bought new in its own right.

I think this is a brilliant idea. Because even tho I already have the first one I'll get to play it with the new system and transition smoothly into the second one.

For those who never played the first one this is a steal and for those who weren't crazy about the gameplay on the first one, they can get both games with a mechanic that they might enjoy.

I'm not greedy enough to exect this to become a trend, but there are certain situations where it makes perfect sense; The God of War collection is Godsend since I missed them on PS2, and if The Last Guardian came with an upscaled version of Shadows of the Colossus, I'd pay extra for that for the same reason.

This announcement feels like a bit of a rip-off mainly because the Japanese release of WKC2 is so close to the US release of WKC1. In general I think it's a pretty good idea, though.

That said they've pretty much killed any chance of me buying WKC1 now. I am not suffering from a shortage of games to play at the moment, as I'm still working on that backlog from March ;)

I also just got 3D Dot Game Heroes. That game is a blast.

Grabbin 3DDH after I snag a copy of FFXIII, yeah I still had other games to finish. Just beat Ratchet n Cla k and starting Bio 2 again to tonight. I stll have DA Orgins and AC2 to finish so I have alot of gaming hrs ahead if me before I mKe any more full price buys. Still needed WKC but if this news is true I'll be waiting on WKC2.

I don't so much see this announcement as a rip-off really. Yeah it is a bit of crap because the game is coming out so soon in Japan after the first was released here in the West but if they are just adding the game to the sequel with updated gameplay and graphics then I am all for it and will gladly buy it and play it again. If they are going to charge extra because they added the first game updated then yeah I will feel a little ripped off.

Wonder whether this inclusion of WKC1 might be specific to a collector's edition? Including WKC1 in every copy sold will obviously cool any potential sales of WKC1 on it's own because people will wait for the 'free' copy that comes with WKC2. On the other hand, if this enhanced version of WKC1 only comes as part of a collectors edition for $79.99 or so, I think it will still sell well with WKC2 while leaving sales of WKC1 now relatively unscathed.

How are those getting the updated version (updated to White Knight 2 specifications in terms of gameplay and mechanics) going to play online with the ones that bought the original game?

And no, a patch of this magnitude is out of the question.

They possibly will not be able to. Or maybe pull online for the updated version and just have it as the single player quest and focus on the servers for part 2. There are a lot of options there so I wouldn't rule this out entirely.

Well, it may be that the WKC1 content is simply the SP story mode without the online component. After all the idea is to have the complete story on one disc, not provide a two for one offer on the full games. You may find that the online component of WKC1 is limited to WKC1.

That said, I can't see any particular reasons why the online component of WKC2 could not work with WKC1 online. The way that online games work requires that each peer and server within the game session exchange data with each other in a standard way. As long as that does not change, there is no reason why WKC2 and WKC1, could not co-exist in the same online space. The fact that one player sees slightly better graphics than another doesn't alter the experience. Combat may be a little more tricky, but again the exchange of data that makes that work probably doesn't care how the user selects attacks or how the user's game presents combat choices. All that's requires is information regarding each player's (end enemies) position, stats, equipment and actions, everything else is rendered locally.

Oh wow, I would love this.
I frequently find myself in the position of not knowing whether I should buy the first game in a series, or just get the new one.
I even missed out on the first Uncharted because of this (I only have so much money, you guys.)

I really hope they go ahead and do this. I would most definitely buy it.

Totally SICK news, and a brilliant way to keep the online aspect kicking. I just beat WKC last night and I already want to see how it continues. I'm telling you this is the next Final Fantasy.

oh, now that would be sweet!

remember when batman AA came out, it was suppose to be the first game to be on a hybrid disk and come with the dark night bluray release.
whatever happened to that?

it would be so cool if developers did this for their games,only bad thing i can see is i dont think its really fair for them to give us 2 games for the price of 1.
so maybe, it would be best to release 2 versions, 1 with both games, and one with just the sequel.
because if i already have the prequel, why would i buy it again with the sequel?
