NBA Live Renamed As NBA Elite

NBA Live has been around for no less than 16 years but EA thinks it's time to shake things up.

According to the latest issue of the Official Xbox Magazine as noted by 1Up, EA plans to change the name of their long-running basketball franchise. Instead of "NBA Live," it seems they'll be going with "NBA Elite" from here on out. Live debuted back in 1994 as NBA Live 95, which at the time replaced NBA Showdown and The NBA Playoffs, so perhaps another name change has been long overdue. As to the new entry, it will apparently "expand on the use of the right analog stick, allowing players to use it in place of a player's hands." EA also wants to remove canned animations in favor of real-time physics, so perhaps both upgrades will prove beneficial to fans of the series. And in all honesty, the franchise really hasn't delivered the AAA simulation experiences we've hoped for, so perhaps a simple name change and a few advancements and alterations will restore the series to its former glory.  One can always hope, at any rate.

So, as it should be called, NBA Elite (which may or may not come with a year attached to the title) will be out this fall.

I hate the name NBA elite. I can remember playing my first live back in the early 1990s. To me it will always be called NBA live.

I grew up playing this on the PC, Lakers vs. Celtics, then years later it was Bulls vs. Lakers. Good times.

I think this is a great way to lose sales. NBA Live whether you like it or not is a known name. Throwing away a established brand for a new name in the video game market is not very smart. Considering that consumers are not going to know that NBA Elite is NBA Live and may think its some run of the mill game like NBAtheShow (I played the show so I know)lol

ill be the decider of that thank you, the last decent NBA game was 2004.
so if the games not "elite" than does that mean i can sue them for false advertisement ;)

I was a fan of EA Sports' nba live games when they debuted on the old 16-bit Genesis and SNES but I stopped playing them when the NBA 2K series was released !

I remember the good ol days of playing "Bulls vs Blazers", "NBA Showdown", "Lakers vs Celtics", "Bulls vs Lakers" and then "NBA Live 95" ! Had a ton of fun plating those games !

For some odd reason I also liked playing Tecmo's Super NBA !
