Killzone 3 To Focus On Storyline, Hollywood Talent Tapped

Guerrilla Games has already said they plan to put a strong emphasis on the storyline in Killzone 3, and they're recruiting top talent to assist in that endeavor.

According to what the game's senior producer Steven Ter Heide told BitMob, the team learned a lot from Naughty Dog's Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (what developer didn't?), in that a lighthearted approach to a relatively serious plot works pretty darn well. As many of you will remember, the story in KZ2 was very dark, which Guerrilla acknowledges and although war is always serious, they're going to eliminate some of the "grim overtones" for the upcoming third installment. On the graphical side, they'll definitely look to upgrade and overhaul so we should once again get the best-looking FPS available, and as for the writing, they're attacking it with gusto. In addition to the new writing talent, Guerrilla has decided to tap Hollywood for some professional help:

"And at the same time we know that a lot of the strength of the story lies in your delivery, that’s something that obviously came from Uncharted as well. If you’ve got some proper actors in there and the chemistry between the actors is good, they’ll start to kind of improvise on the lines and make the story a lot better, because it feels more natural that way. So we’re also looking to bring in a lot of Hollywood talent this time around to make sure that the chemistry is there, and the level of acting elevates the storytelling as well."

We must wholeheartedly agree. Uncharted 2 boasted the most professional, most exceptional voice cast of the generation; it really was movie-quality. Therefore, it's not surprising at all to see Guerrilla wish to emulate such excellence, especially when they're addressing one of the few drawbacks of KZ2.  The more we hear, the more we already love KZ3.

I don't see anything wrong about an FPS getting a GOTY, as long as its innovative and fun. The problem is with all these FPS games coming out each day, we are gradually losing interest for this genre.

This is good. But I think the dark overtones worked for KZ2. I mean, yes, it is war and the Helgan world was a very bleak one. I just hope that toning that down and possibly injecting more humor to make it less serious doesn't come off as cheesy.

Sounds like GG are making some good moves, and I understand wanting to make the voice acting better but won't it be a little off if the characters have other actors voices?

I know I'll get over it when/if Rico becomes a tolerable, if not downright good, sidekick. So, so glad to hear this. I think KZ3 is going to be at or near the top of my most anticipated games now.

Good, the forgettable story was the only flaw in KZ2.

I wonder if the cover system is gonna get a tweak or two?
It worked fine but just wasn't perfect.

I don't find that as bad as another actor taking over a role in a sequel of a movie that was played by another actor. *cough Iron Man 2 cough* But if it means better performances, why not?

From what I've been hearing from GG recently, they've been fixing everything I had problems with in the previous game. Enemy variety, character development, overall storytelling.... Good stuff. I'm not gonna watch any "leaks" or gameplay videos for this aside from, like, E3 trailers though. I want the whole game to be fresh when I play it. Same goes for Uncharted 3 (we all know its coming) and The Last Guardian.

You said it Bro.
When I played Uncharted 2 all I could do was say 'Oh, that's that moment I say on the video." I had seen all the great action sequence before hand and that kind of killed it for me. These days I try to not look at videos too much, I'm sticking to pics :)

I`m actually very excited for this game. I liked Killzone 2 but the controls ruined it for me. I really hope they fix those damn slugish controls. And i do understand that they were going for the feeling of having a bunch of gear on but honestly it is not fun. So please fix those damned controls!

It would be better to have an option for the "weighted" controls or the "normal" controls. Killzone 1 had a similar, but less noticeable, weight to the controls, so I feel that the weighted controls help Killzone create its own identity.

I can see weight affecting how fast you can walk or run, but how fast you turn left and right? That is not realistic one bit.

I especially didn't appreciate the option menu to increase sensitivity. That damn slider didn't do a thing.

I think most people are so used to call of duty games that KZ2 feels sluggish to them. The controls felt great to me, definetely more realistic.

As far as slow to turn around, turn yourself around and see how much time it takes. If you can do it in .1 seconds then I guess KZ2 isn't for you.

A lighthearted approach to a relatively serious plot works pretty darn well FOR UNCHARTED. If they go lighthearted with KZ3 you can count me out. I say keep it grim, just up the quality of the acting. The atrocious writing and cringe worthy deliveries were nearly too much to bear. Kill off all the main characters and start fresh with new characters and new talent.

I hope by "Hollywood talent", he doesn't mean the voice talents of Keanu Reeves and Jean Claude Van Damme. If so, we are right back at square one.

Let's get Morgan Freemon. Now that man can narrate. While we're at it, lets sprinkle in a little James Earl Jones and Sam Elliot.

Morgan Freeman had a part in the Wanted: Weapons of Fate game. o.O

Unfortunately, there was nothing he could do to save that game. But, at least he isn't opposed to lending his voice to a video game, even though it was as his likeness.

Everything I've heard about KZ3 so far is good news. I have a feeling that it may stand a chance for GOTY. Yes, it is an FPS but with such concentration on storyline, hopefully amazing voice acting, and the overall developments made it seems like they will be taking KZ2 finding every flaw fixing it and then adding a good dose of innovation and genius :)

I like it. For the most part. The second one didn't quite live up to the hype that I felt built around it, but was still good. Ramp up the storytelling and extend the campaign to more than 12 hours as well as giving us more variety in what we can do and I'll be happy as a pig in... mud. (gotta keep it PG 'round here) Peace.

No, i think it did live up to the hype. i cant name many FPS out at the moment apart from Killzone 2 i know with a proper whole hearted story.
MW2 doesn't count. story was interesting, but those cut-scenes? and tbh, i wasn't following the story that much either...

I don't know, just because Uncharted had a lighthearted anti-hero for the protagonist doesn't mean that every game should copy that. Killzone adopting that style would be like Saving Private Ryan going for an Indiana Jones feel.

It's great that they're focusing on the story though - every game needs a good story.

I really liked everything about Killzone 2... the graphics, controls, sound, etc. I even liked most of the characters, except for you-guessed-it, RICO!

So, I like that they are toning down the swearing, and adding more quality writing (chars and story?).

This should shut Rico up a bit. Then, I'm hoping, in KZ3, Rico steps on a landmine.

Killzone 2 was and still is a top tier FPS, some people want it to be just like every other FPS because they like different aspects of other games, well too bad. KZ2 stood out for its well deserved reasons, realism. If the story would have been a bit more focused on the game would have been flawless, besides that I loved everything about it. With Templar deceased they have no choice but to kill of Rico, hopefully in some sort of cinematic and epic fashion.

I was thinking about it though, KZ3 will be refined and optimized in every way possible, but maybe for the next they could add more things to the story aspect. For instance, on certain games what you do and say effects the entire story and shapes what happens for the ending, to add replay value and much needed depth to a FPS story. But for my last question, the 3D will be optional right? I know 3D downgrades the resolution, but I hope the game has to be played in 3D.

as you may know, i am a call of duty fan, but i personally loved kz2's controls. the movement is realistically slow, because the packs that soldiers carry are heavy. but what people are REALLY complaining about is the reaction time of the R3 stick and aiming. its pretty unrealistic 2 move the stick or aim down the sights and then 1/2 a second later it moves. pistols and rifles aren't that heavy. slow reaction time for heavy weapons is understandable, but not for pistols and rifles.
they SHOULD have different reaction times for controls based on the weapon you're carrying. THAT would be realistic

KZ2 had one of the most addicting multiplayers so far this generation. I would've liked for the level cap to be higher since it didn't take very long to max out your XP...but still a really good team based FPS. Can't WAIT for KZ3!!

I'm glad they have a bigger emphasis on story, characters, dialogue, and good voice actors this time around (which were really my only problems with KZ2). However, I'm just not sure if KZ is suitable for a light-hearted story. There were actually quite a few attempted lighthearted moments in KZ2, only brought down by the idiotic dialogue and bad voice actors, so if they add in more lighthearted moments IMO it'll probably make it more cheesy.

Don't get me wrong, KZ2 had its dark moments, but more often than not they were trying to make some cliched military joke that stopped being funny 40 years ago, so the added "humor" won't help the story at all. I am willing to take a wait-and-see approach to this, but right now this is the only thing they've said about the game that I'm not liking.
