Sony Rejects Vivid's Offer Of Adult Movies On PS3

Sex sells. But Sony doesn't need to lower themselves to sell their product(s) anymore, now do they?

Previously, it was reported that the world's largest pornography producer, Vivid Video, had approached Sony in an effort to get their creations on the PlayStation 3. However, as the company has recently told CVG, those negotiations "didn't lead anywhere." Vivid wanted Sony to set up an "age-locked area" for users to download and view adult movies on the PS3, which would act as a mature complement to the console's existing selection of regular films and TV shows. But Vivid founder and co-chairman Steven Hirsch has confirmed that Sony clearly isn't interested, and he must now shift his sights...to Microsoft and the Xbox 360. "If we could get further than we did with Sony, we'd be very interested," he said. Even if Microsoft doesn't bite, some have suggested that pornography - arguably the single biggest entertainment venue on earth - could be a huge driver of 3D TVs and other home entertainment equipment. Speaking of which, Hirsch says the porn industry is undecided in regards to the promise of "SmartTV" (combining HDTV and internet browsing) and 3D:

"At this point, there is very little 3D content around and we think there is a problem with consumers needing to use glasses each time they watch. On the other hand, Smart TV is clearly on its way and it would make sense for the 3D people to get together with the Smart TV people to produce one device with full capabilities.

If consumers are given a choice of either 3DTV or Smart TV, their indecision about which technology to select could stall progress."

Well now, porn in 3D. ...all right. Maybe Sony should've considered this aspect. But in all seriousness, we're glad there's still some semblance of class associated with the PS3, and we probably wouldn't be all that surprised if Microsoft accepted the offer; after all, it must be tough to have the waning console right now.

Ok...I swear...I remember reading an article back...1.5-2 years ago...where Sony did accept some movie contract agreement and had their PS3s streaming porn...in Japan - I think. Because I remember porn and PS3 being used in the same sentence before.

Of course, people suggest such things when they're so set on "protecting" their kids, trying to keep them "innocent" or something, trying to separate one world into private and another into public. Parents can be one of the most violent types of authority in our society for that reason.
Let people (all people) learn what their world is like. E.g., the internet is full of porn. So what?

Humans are rotten to the core, they don't have to be taught how to lie, steal or cheat. its the exact opposite. They have to be taught the right things. They have to be shown what is right and wrong. With your logic, there's no need for parents. Kids should just be born and let out into the wild right?

As for it being the reasons parents are violent, that makes no sense whats so ever. Because i want to teach my kid values and conviction doesn't mean I'm violent. Children should be allowed their innocents until they become of age. I highly doubt you would like to see your 13 year old(if you had one) walking around looking like a hooker in a mini skirt because her friends told her it was the cool thing to do or it was something she saw on the internet.

I personally wouldn't mind seeing Sony offer these kinds of movies. I also don't think they would have gotten enough money out of it to make it worth the flak they would have caught from less open minded people. I for one would never have paid for them....any porn for that matter, and I'm sure anyone else that watches porn knows better than to pay what they would be charging for it, anyway.

I'd even be surprised if MS jumped on board with this. I thought the average Xbox LIVE user was from 12-18 or something like that. I thought i read that some where, though i could be wrong.

I just don't see how this will help either company in the long run. No body who doesn't have a PS3 or and Xbox is going to go out and buy one to watch porn. If some one is that into porn, they probably already have their "porn setup" if you will. Also the ones who really want it on their PS3 have already figured out how to get it on the PS3 already, I'm sure.

As most people can determine from VHS vs Beta and Blu-ray vs HDDVD whatever backs the porn industry seems to become victorious in it's given battle. I can see Microsoft jumping all over this, introducing something like a Platinum membership that gives access, and trying to revive themselves with it.

I agree with Max. as sleazy as MS is, sending Greenburg out with playmates around his arms for photo-ops, i just can't see them making a move to support porn. They have way to many families and younger people signed up on LIVE. Supporting companies like Vivid would only hurt their image even further. Not make it better.

Besides, they sell laptops and desktops with HD support now. People who want to watch porn in HD will watch it on their computer for free. They aren't going to pay LIVE and PSN inflated prices for it.

Porn distributed on physical media is different. BluRay has porn, so I guess BluRay is safe?

Porn on the net is so prevalent that there is almost zero reason for anyone so inclined, to pay for what is otherwise freely available. Even in a digital download future, the Internet is the one factor that prevents porn being a 'king maker' as far as new media goes.

Isn't 3D porn simply called a real woman?

No offense to anyone, and as anyone who has read my comments knows I no prude, but...I am glad Sony is not doing this. The PlayStation band is not an adults only brand, and should never be such a brand. Sony is very family oriented, that is they want their products to be acceptable to all, not just those over 18. Having Porn on the PS3 or PSN would be an instant red flag for every parent in the world and a reason for them not to go Sony.

As others have said, who needs this on the PSN? There's more than enough porn ranging from topless bikini babes that barely qualifies as porn to the most extreme filth imaginable (and in many cases unimaginable by the majority of human beings). We don't need this on PSN or PS3.

Sony do not need porn on the ps3. If they had got it, it would have not done anything positive for the PS3. Theres enough stuff on the net, and heck, HD tv and the internet? you're set anyway.

If the Xbox gets it, the fanboys will go craaaazy. They'll be like "we have porn!". TBH anyone who thinks that is a good selling point for a GAMES console is a douche, and obviously doesn't get much. PS3 or Xbox. (i would mention the Wii but it'd just capsize)

I believe Sony made the right decision. If porn was sold through the ps3, only Sony's image would suffer. If you like or dislike Vivid, that wouldn't change one bit.

I'm more concerned for children and my favorite console maker's well being, than some people who profit from activities that should remain private. I don't condemn anyone for watching what they want to watch, but I don't want porn to be an option on a machine I purchased for my child.

Telling someone to be a good parent and monitor the device is usually advice given by single people with no children. A good parent would never purchase the device to begin with. When I bought the ps3 it didn't have the option and I wish for it to remain so.

The PS3 already has porn.......the internet browser.

But I think Sony 100% made the right decision, the Playstation is a family brand. Making a deal with Vivid would only damage that image. I mean, could you imagine the media's reaction to this. Its exactly what Sony dont need, especially with the family oriented Move due to launch soon.

Wow, some pretty narrowminded people in terms of erotica round here. The very same people I've known to get all high and mighty about porn, have cheated, don't really respect women properly and probably are even selfish lovers, though they think they are a "gentlemen".

Hiding deeper issues by mouthing off about porn? fair enough it's not your thing, but it's a strict and professional industry, with the people in it doing it cause they want to. They feel sexually awakened and instead of grinding a job they dont want to do they are partying in their own way. That's more than a lot of people can say.

I guess I have a different opinion than the rest - I don't think linking to smut lowers the class of the platform or anything.

Hi-def Porn could have been "one more thing" offered by PSN that XBL didn't. Although, as others above have commented, God knows it's available for free (in a manner of speaking) on the Net anyway, so who would be willing to pony up cash for this?

i wouldnt care if they put it on or not. I dont want it (and if I did, Id just use the Browser), but I'm sure someone does. Its been established that an older crowd goes for PS3s, so it would make sense that Vivid would go for them. Then again, Vivid has a reputation of sleaze in the form of celebrity sex tapes and such. Maybe it's not right that Sony would team up with them. Now if a company like Playboy would make them an offer, I think Sony would be more inclined to accept their form of erotica.

yeah, in japan. but it wouldn't happen here in the usa. sony, wants to do it, but is afraid of getting sued. could you imagine wal-mart target, best buy, blockbuster, a family dvd rental store that doesn't carry rated r films (right now i can't think of one), not carry sony products, the ps3, or there video games, because of vivid porn or porn in general? i'll take it a step further, a father let's his son watch it, and the mother finds out and sues sony for emotional, physical, and psycological harm to the child. and says that the protection lock is a joke, nevermind that the father let his son look at it. that doesn't include people wanting to protest sony and or vivid. that doesn't include FOX,CNBC,MSNBC,CNN, the president (maybe) or your local television and radio news coming together or is in an agreeance to take down the porn machine and sony. by the way, vivid is soft core porn, i think unless they changed. them and wicked pictures. but for me, i would welcome it if it's affordable. like i said earlier, if yhey upgrade the web browser to an actual web browser that's equally compatible to the computers, you could stream to your hearts content.

Well, there is a lot to be said for how porn has managed to fit nicely with advances in technology... it's how we ended up with the inferior VHS over BetaMax afterall correct?

I know Sony knows this... so me thinks Sony knows something else, has another plan, or at least has the option to accept later if they need to.

Besides porn is on Blu-Ray already... Sony doesn't need to open up a XXX section on the PSN... If anything, this could be a store "channel" for the PREMIUM service at a later date. IMO, I don't see the need to do this either Sony... the net is chock full of porn!
