Sucker Punch Explains New Artistic Direction For inFamous 2

So you know inFamous 2 will receive a big unveiling in the next Game Informer issue, but fans of the original have noticed something a little jarring...

It's the picture you see here; the cover of the July GI, and it clearly shows a redesigned main character. Cole McGrath will indeed return as the protagonist in this highly anticipated sequel but it seems as if developer Sucker Punch has decided on a cosmetic overhaul for the electrically-charged hero. On top of which, according to the article within the magazine (as cited by Examiner.com), Cole's personality has changed along with his face. But why? Well, art director Matthias Lorenz says the team wanted to make him "more appealing" and "more compelling" as a main character, and Animation Director Billy Harper added that they wanted to retain the original grit but "without the grumpiness." Their description of the new Cole may or may not appeal to you; they say he's more like an "extreme sports star - like Travis Pastrana, Tony Hawk or Chris Sharma - what would they be like if they had super powers." So now the question is, was this the right way to go?

Just my two cents: nope. The entire premise of inFamous obviously revolved around a comic book theme, which is why Cole's style and personality as a gruff sort of anti-hero seemed to resonate with the atmosphere. In other words, it fit. And all I can think of when reading that above description of the new Cole is Vin Diesel in "XXX." ...and that's not really what I want. Still, the gameplay is what made the original rule, so there's no doubt I'll be playing the sequel. Just wanted to make that clear.

I kind of preferred the original design. But then again several other game series have changed the appearances of their characters, so I'll get over it :P

The appearance is a smaller deal compared to a full on personality change.

I think the change is a good thing. The only thing that really stands out about Cole's appearance was really that messenger bag that he always carries. We'll see if the change is for the better or worse when we see some gameplays

Thats the thing though, nothing stood out about Cole because he was just an ordinary person with superhuman powers

Hmm, we are all getting very observant (and even nit-picky?) over a single cover, but rest assured, it will all pan out!

Something good must be coming to make Sucker Punch change up Mr. McGrath dramatically ^.^

This is a massive mistake and could result in turning off lots of gamers. If this guy is too far away from the Cole we know I won't be thrilled, but it's still a preorder because inFamous was so addictive and sweet.

Again... what Sucker should have done is appeal to fans and engage with them directly, asking them what they liked and didn't like about the first game. Developers should put an interactive voting system on their site and start getting in votes of what was cool and what wasn't in the previous outing...

The fans should be shaping the game, not the other way around...

Is Sucker going to Punch the lights out of their fans? I hope we are not going to get a "Sucker Square Punch" derivative...

True, Cole's gruff and rough nature made him perfect for the first game, but so long as the gameplay and story is awesome, I think Infamous 2 will still be a treat.

Not really interested in this game anymore

Not as much as I would be if they kept everything how it was in the original

I love sequels when they're done right. Uncharted 2 is a great example.

This overhaul is what years later make people go "yeah the original was great, the sequel was alright."

They brought in a new artist who has no clue what the original was about, when it came to the art/character style.

Damn. I thought that cover was some kind of joke.

If they want to change up the protagonist this much, why keep Cole at all? Just give us a whole new character. Don't be making these drastic changes (voice/character design) and then pretend to tell us that it's still Cole.

This game may have just dropped off of my pre-order list. I can't say I won't buy it, but I will wait for reviews before dropping the cash on this one.

I am angry, for real. Imagine Uncharted without Nolan North, and a lead character differing in everything except the name, "Nathan Drake". Yes, a lot of people would be upset. I say we put together a Psxextreme survey, or poll, (starting with the first option of keeping Cole's original design and bringing back Jason Cottle as the voice actor) and send the results to Sucker Punch.

Again, I am not happy at ALL!

Does Sucker Punch actually think that their game didn't sell because of the lead character, or by dumping the main character for all practical purposes, that they will sell more copies?! I mean for God sake's, it sold over 2 million right? How many copies did Uncharted1 sell after a year?!?

I remember some random people complaining about the voice actor (although I only heard good things about the actual character design). Well, I think we at Psxextreme should make our voices heard to, and post link to the survey all over playstation forums every where. As Ben said, the every-man, urban Cole fit the bill, and a f'n Vin Deasel would be damn near a deal breaker.

I'm thinking it's gotta just be the art style of the cover. I mean, Cole's face can't change, even if they want it to more than anything else in the whole wide world. That cover makes his face look like it belongs to a college freshmen who hangs out in cafes with his laptop, writing poems.

Obviously the fan base for the first inFamous is avid enough to buy the game regardless of a change of appearance, or personality for that matter. So, the developers probably see this as a "why not" decision, and I must say I agree with them. Yes, it may not be the same ol' character from the first game but ya never know, maybe he suits inFamous 2's story and overall feel better.

I must admit, that I'm quite on the fence over Cole's new look. I imagine that it won't be as drastic as it appears in that piece of concept art. More likely they'll do a bit of remodelling from the original character model.
The voice I liked, but I do hope they tone down the gravelliness (?), it just seemed out of place. Don't get rid of it entirely, but tone it down.
Personality change is what I really don't like. I liked the way that Cole was so sarcastic and reluctant much of the time. If they go and make him into "Yeah, don't worry Bill, I can go convince your sister to go back to the douchebag that beat the ever loving crap out of her. But I promise I won't hurt her." I will flip right the hell out.
And the city, meh, I like Empire City, but it was a bit drab. Apparently the new one is modelled off New Orleans. inFamous Mardi Gras anyone?
Peace.

Cole's ultimate attack looked like a thunder rain dropping down on the city, pretty impressive...

Sorry, lame troll attempt, come back again you hear?

gritty but not grumpy. thats kind of how i would make doctor who if it were up to me. tis a brilliant show though.

i think grit but no grump could be good. as long as he does feel anti-hero ish. my fave type of hero. after spiderman of course.
perhaps he could be more anti-hero going on evil if you choose evil karma

This reminds me of a typical consequence when a movie sequel goes from small independent to major mainstream studio. Sad part is that in this case it's still the same "studio".

I'll still buy it, though. They can't go *that* wrong.

The new Cole looks like he belongs in Starbucks sipping a latte and texting on his iPhone. :)

I played about 10 minutes of the demo for the first game and honestly got really bored.

I hear ya, I did not like the demo either. Especially the handling I found quite annoying (the "stickyness"). It was not until later, when it was priced at £17.99 (around 25 USD or thereabouts) that I picked it up.

But how many times have you played a demo that did the game justice? I know I have yet to try such a demo...!

However I do think that a certain liking of open world games is required (as for me I'm a open world junkie, it's a game requirement for me). If so, then I'd really give the game a go. It's quite cheap these days (on platinum now right?), anyways.

Yeah, demo's quite often don't do the game justice. I didn't really care for the demo's of some of my favorite games of all time. I suppose I should give this game a shot, as it is pretty cheap these days. And I like open world type games.

I, unfortunately, agree with JackC8.
I got it from GameFly a few months back and was extremely excited to play it, and couldn't make it past an hour.

If you want to completely change the main character's appearance and personality, make a new main character. Just write a new story with a new character who has similar abilities acquired through similar circumstances and leave Cole alone. Stupid.

I personally really like that Cole was just an average Joe. An ordinary guy caught in an extraordinary situation. It's perfect because it makes all us average Joe's want to play it even more.

I'm still getting it. Considering we know nothing of the time line and how long its been since the 1st game took place, I'm fine with it. Sucker punch can do no wrong. Now we need sly cooper.

Honestly I can understand a change in personality and looks, we all grow and change in every way as the years go on.

However from the picture and the description in the article, this change makes no sense. Who goes through through the worst experience of their life and comes out younger and happy go lucky?

This change doesn't make sense, I could be fine with it if it only made sense. Let's hope some things change between now and release. I'm not going to write it off as I loved the first one so much and I am hoping sucker punch will pull it off again.

I hope the sequel is too good of a game to compensate the mistake of changing from a dark anti-hero to a college surfer dude with powers.

Yeah, he doesn't look like a surfer dude. He's got shopping bags full of Gap, American Eagle, Von Dutch, etc. Probably wearing a pink thong too.

First thing I thought was... I this Raiden's new boyfriend? LOL
I hope this is just a bad artist rendition from Game InFormer. Maybe the artist just wanted to mess with us or something and Cole won't look like a South Beach local :)

Maybe Cole is just happy in the new game. Even though all that bad stuff happened to him, maybe he thought "I shouldn't be sulking. I have powers. And I'm a bad ass. Who has two thumbs, can throw sticky lightning grenades, grind on railways/cables, and summon a destructively awesome lightning storm from heaven itself? THIS GUY!!" That's what I would do. I mean it's sad what happened to his significant other but when I was playing she annoyed the hell out of me and I was actually glad with what happened to her.

I like the old look better as well. Hopefully his voice doesn't change that much.
I don't get all the people that complained that his voice was too gravelly. That's what I liked about him since it made him that much closer to being chev chelious in game form.

I know I'm a little late to the party here but I haven't been on the internet for days.
But this is horrible. I don't think there are any other words to describe this "change" to Cole.
I am currently playing through the first game again on the evil side and it is just so much fun. His personality and his appearance go hand in hand with the setting and story of this game.
Maybe that is why they are changing it? This new city looks brighter and more colorful and maybe that is why Cole looks that way as well?
I'm only throwing that out, like anyone will read this.
But I want the old Cole. The one I'm having so much fun playing now.

Didn't they say that they were changing the voice actor for Cole because he revealed Infamous 2 too early or something like that? Cause if so, that's a pretty obvious reason for why they're changing the voice.

And who's to say that if they had to change the voice, they thought that they might as well change the character up a bit more too to go along with the new voice?

Personally, I don't mind the changes right now. Its kinda obvious that they're not going to change his face, and his clothes don't look that bad (not something I would wear, but I also would definitely not be caught wearing his messenger suit from the first one). The only thing that's troublesome is this so-called "extreme" personality shift they're giving him, but if its explained in the story or they have some moments where the more dark parts of his character show through, it won't be too much of a problem IMO.
