Sucker Punch Explains New Artistic Direction For inFamous 2
So you know inFamous 2 will receive a big unveiling in the next Game Informer issue, but fans of the original have noticed something a little jarring...
It's the picture you see here; the cover of the July GI, and it clearly shows a redesigned main character. Cole McGrath will indeed return as the protagonist in this highly anticipated sequel but it seems as if developer Sucker Punch has decided on a cosmetic overhaul for the electrically-charged hero. On top of which, according to the article within the magazine (as cited by Examiner.com), Cole's personality has changed along with his face. But why? Well, art director Matthias Lorenz says the team wanted to make him "more appealing" and "more compelling" as a main character, and Animation Director Billy Harper added that they wanted to retain the original grit but "without the grumpiness." Their description of the new Cole may or may not appeal to you; they say he's more like an "extreme sports star - like Travis Pastrana, Tony Hawk or Chris Sharma - what would they be like if they had super powers." So now the question is, was this the right way to go?
Just my two cents: nope. The entire premise of inFamous obviously revolved around a comic book theme, which is why Cole's style and personality as a gruff sort of anti-hero seemed to resonate with the atmosphere. In other words, it fit. And all I can think of when reading that above description of the new Cole is Vin Diesel in "XXX." ...and that's not really what I want. Still, the gameplay is what made the original rule, so there's no doubt I'll be playing the sequel. Just wanted to make that clear.

The fans should be shaping the game, not the other way around...
Is Sucker going to Punch the lights out of their fans? I hope we are not going to get a "Sucker Square Punch" derivative...

Not as much as I would be if they kept everything how it was in the original
I love sequels when they're done right. Uncharted 2 is a great example.
This overhaul is what years later make people go "yeah the original was great, the sequel was alright."
They brought in a new artist who has no clue what the original was about, when it came to the art/character style.

This game may have just dropped off of my pre-order list. I can't say I won't buy it, but I will wait for reviews before dropping the cash on this one.
Sucker Punch still has time to reconsider this move.

I remember some random people complaining about the voice actor (although I only heard good things about the actual character design). Well, I think we at Psxextreme should make our voices heard to, and post link to the survey all over playstation forums every where. As Ben said, the every-man, urban Cole fit the bill, and a f'n Vin Deasel would be damn near a deal breaker.

Now he looks more like a feminist tree-hugger who goes around holding hands and male bonding around a moonlit campfire by singing Cuoom-bye-ya.
And then high-fiving his buddy's butts, all while roasting S'mores marshmallow treats, with his new-found powers.
Even Keven Butler says....Hey, come oooon now"

I really want to know more about what new powers Cole will be getting.
And I want to be able to go inside buildings! At least some.

Gee, why WOULD I think that when the new Cole is described as an extreme sports star with superhero-like abilities? 'rolling eyes'
The reading comprehension of some people around here is a little scary.

But how can you go from bad to worse , i mean i didnt like the appearance of cole in the first one , but the one in the picture above is even worse , he looks like a washed up actor.
PLZ this is a good game , i dont want to see it get ruined.

The voice I liked, but I do hope they tone down the gravelliness (?), it just seemed out of place. Don't get rid of it entirely, but tone it down.
Personality change is what I really don't like. I liked the way that Cole was so sarcastic and reluctant much of the time. If they go and make him into "Yeah, don't worry Bill, I can go convince your sister to go back to the douchebag that beat the ever loving crap out of her. But I promise I won't hurt her." I will flip right the hell out.
And the city, meh, I like Empire City, but it was a bit drab. Apparently the new one is modelled off New Orleans. inFamous Mardi Gras anyone?
Peace.

the gameplay and story is what made infamous the great game it is, so as long as thats still there the cosmetic changes really wont have much of a effect.
i really hope they give the game a graphical overhaul, infamous seriously lacked color and variety.
especially the electricity, it looks CRAP! in comparison to the electricity from starwars the force unleashed.

As always, your comments lack of any logic, proof or taste whatsoever...
Like your name....
Cole's ultimate attack looked like a thunder rain dropping down on the city, pretty impressive...
Sorry, lame troll attempt, come back again you hear?

But how many times have you played a demo that did the game justice? I know I have yet to try such a demo...!
However I do think that a certain liking of open world games is required (as for me I'm a open world junkie, it's a game requirement for me). If so, then I'd really give the game a go. It's quite cheap these days (on platinum now right?), anyways.

I personally really like that Cole was just an average Joe. An ordinary guy caught in an extraordinary situation. It's perfect because it makes all us average Joe's want to play it even more.

However from the picture and the description in the article, this change makes no sense. Who goes through through the worst experience of their life and comes out younger and happy go lucky?
This change doesn't make sense, I could be fine with it if it only made sense. Let's hope some things change between now and release. I'm not going to write it off as I loved the first one so much and I am hoping sucker punch will pull it off again.

But this is horrible. I don't think there are any other words to describe this "change" to Cole.
I am currently playing through the first game again on the evil side and it is just so much fun. His personality and his appearance go hand in hand with the setting and story of this game.
Maybe that is why they are changing it? This new city looks brighter and more colorful and maybe that is why Cole looks that way as well?
I'm only throwing that out, like anyone will read this.
But I want the old Cole. The one I'm having so much fun playing now.

And who's to say that if they had to change the voice, they thought that they might as well change the character up a bit more too to go along with the new voice?
Personally, I don't mind the changes right now. Its kinda obvious that they're not going to change his face, and his clothes don't look that bad (not something I would wear, but I also would definitely not be caught wearing his messenger suit from the first one). The only thing that's troublesome is this so-called "extreme" personality shift they're giving him, but if its explained in the story or they have some moments where the more dark parts of his character show through, it won't be too much of a problem IMO.
