Pachter: Fanboys - In Any Venue - Won't Ever Go Away
You may hate 'em, but industry analyst Michael Pachter says we still need 'em.
If you don't listen to the GameTrailers show Pach-Attack, you often miss interesting little nuggets of entertainment. In this most recent episode, the Wedbush Morgan analyst tackles the sensitive and potentially combustible "fanboy" subject; he doesn't restrict the term to games and initially says that one should "never discuss religion or politics with people" because depending on which you perceive to be the best option, you will always defend it to the death regardless of other facts or opinions. He goes on to add:
"I kinda wish on Game Trailers we would never discuss our console bias because if you won a PS3 you obviously made a big dollar decision to buy it and you love that PS3. And if you buy a 360 you made a big investment in that and you love that 360 and you know why? They’re both great! I’m leaving out the Wii, there’s tons of people who love the Wii as well, wasn’t quite as big an investment, but if you Nintendo games, of course you love the Wii."
Pachter than says fanboys were just "born to love the console they own," and that's that. He even goes and uses a personal analogy, 'cuz obviously, the dude is a Porsche "fanboy:"
"I have to tell you guys something...I drive a Porsche and you know what? Never will I own another car. It’s the best car on the road, I can’t believe that everybody else don’t have one but again, that’s cause that’s what I drive. Fanboys won’t ever go away, ever, ever ever, that’s what keeps the comments happening on this site, let’s see if we can get 10,000 comments on how I’m clueless about fanboys."
Well now, in our opinion, there are two things to add: firstly, there are fans and then there are fanboys. The former are simply fans of a certain system or game or what have you, but they are not consciously avoiding competing products without knowing anything about them, simply because they don't like the brand name on said products. Fanboys, of course, do that. And furthermore, we still say there's a distinct difference - likely due to the Internet - between the fanboy of 20 years ago and the fanboy of today. The fanboy of 20 years ago is the kind Pachter is describing; they just love what they have, and they'll promote its greatness. Today, nobody seems to be positive about it if they're biased; they're extremely hostile and rather than promoting their own preferences, they insult other people and their preferences.
It's actually not so complicated. PSXE, for instance, was designed for PlayStation fans. Not so hard to understand. But the Comments section isn't allowed to be loaded with hostile fanboy crap found at other sites and articles don't exist for the sole purpose of running down another brand. ...the site may be 11 years old but we're not 11. And Pachter, we know what you're sayin'. Sadly, many sites do need the fanboys. So you keep drivin' your Porsche. You love it. Have fun with it. Nobody should have any problems with that whatsoever, right?

Which really makes me wonder how Natal is going to fly. So many Xbox fans play shooters and only shooters. How are they going to sell Natal to these people?

A few years ago, the PS3 was trashed by nearly every media outlet. Microsoft themselves led the charge in several instances.
When it came to the PS3, it was the "price tag". That became the "lack of games". It moved to the "PSN sucks". Now? All I hear is crickets.
Strangely enough, I was more a Xbox fan at the start of this generation of gaming, but 5 RROD's later and my purchasing of a PS3 at launch changed my prospective forever.

That's what done it for me. Especially since they should have been addressing their own major issues. I was subjected to 3 refurbished junkers within 10 months of handing over 300 quid. Never again Micro$haft, FU** YOU!
lol They really done a number on me. The hate is still stong like it just happened yesterday.

Which also "enabled all their rabid a-holes to go "astroturf" their competitor's sites with their trashtalking BS.
And.....if I remember right, wasn't MS actually caught numerous times paying them to do this???

1. 360 had a 1 year head-start, meaning more games on the shelves.
2. 360 had Gears of War, Mass Effect and Halo 3. PS3 had Resistence and Motorstorm. (I'm not saying they're bad games, this is just a comparison for the time)
3. All my friends have 360's and hooked them up online, so playing with friends was restricted to 360.
4. PS3 was $400, yes, $400!!! more expensive than than the 20GB 360 here in Australia.
In 2007, Sony was off to a very poor start. I nearly got the 360 over PS3, but then something happened in 2008.
1. Gears of War and Mass Effect came to PC. Halo 1 and 2 were available on PC too.
2. The PS3 dropped back/comp and other features and was $300AU cheaper.
3. Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted 1 and Heavenly Sword showed what the PS3 could do, and it really impressed everyone.
4. The 40GB PS3 - GTA IV bundle was released in time for my 21st birthday, so birthday cash + GTA IV = epic PS3 win for me.
I changed my HDD from a 40GB to a 320 GB laptop hard drive and never looked back.
I did eventually get that 60GB 360 with Gears 2 limited edition and Halo 3, along with some PS2 games like Bully, Burnout Revenge and the Tomb Raiders: Legend and Anniversary. But I've hardly touched it compared to the PS3.
Even the Wii is more fun than 360. But my hardcore gaming friends defend their 360's to the death, and lay hate on me for opening my mouth about how the PS3 is good too, if not better.
I have 1 friend who loves 360 so much, he went out and got a separate blu-ray player with a 360 and surround sound system, rather than just buying a PS3. He loves Halo and Gears, and Mass Effect, so much that he bought a 360 for all my friends' 21st birthdays. Yeah!!! He's that insecure to win everyone over!!!!
Half of those friends have now traded their 360's to a PS3 and FF XIII, Uncharted 2 and Heavy Rain.
At EB games, a 360 trades for $40AU. A 120GB PS3 trades for $200. In the end, people realise the PS3 is worth 5 Xbox 360's. In technological and defective product terms, they are right.

It seems they rather spend their time site hoping or lurking around YouTube for pro or semi pro PS3 videos(that includes Pulse)than play on their 360s.

i have features i love on my ps3 but also features i wish i it had that the 360 does
(i like how the video defaults to 480i on it if you switch from hdmi to composite and theres a switch for component so it stays on that resolution since theres no detect for component)
oh and sry but i dont consider the wii a game console considering its slower than computers made back in the 90's

World, did you not state in a past article that you like to play video games by yourself, sit very close to your tv screen, and I think you said you like to "crack a coke" when you play?
Now look at that picture...strike 1, strike 2, strike 3...THAT IS YOU!!

Fanboys back then only had contact with their friends for the most part, or acquaintances. And for the most part, even though you may raz your friends, you are still somewhat civil. In fact, you were probably HAPPY that you had a Nintendo, and he had a PS1 or Dreamcast, because that meant he got to come to your house and play all your Nintendo games, and you got to go to his house and play Sonic games, or Tomb Raider games, etc.
But the internet has given birth to a whole new breed of animal. Now instead of having arguements with your buds Dave and Johnny, you now have arguements with people all over the world, whom you've never met before, and never will face to face, so you don't have to be accountable for your statements. You can be as rude as you please.

Ben is correct on there being a difference between a fan & a fanboy, so I'll add to his point by explaining the cause of a typical "fanboy."
Being a fanboy, you will obviously argue against future fanboys of the opposition. You may prove yourself to be intimidating or righteous, but whatever theme it is, no matter what product you're defending, fanboyism will always be a sugarcoated profile of just about how insecure you really are. At life in general.
For example: just like the idiots who keep bragging that Brock Lesnar could "destroy" Fedor Emelianenko; Dana White [what a douche] keeps bashing him, yet when did Fedor ever talk or even bothered comparing himself against other people? His pride? He doesn't care if he loses or not. Pride is fear.
The one who ultimately wins a battle is the one that never realised there was a battle to begin with, and Fedor pretty much does that. Basically fanboys bash and argue for the sake of shooing their insecurities, retaining their "pride" [ironically feeding their fears]. But no matter what happens, fear doesn't go away by fighting. This is why all fanboys are destined to fail, no matter how much difference they make for themselves.
Rant end.

I mean it's fun to read through all those baseless flame-comments and laugh at them ^^.
I'm glad you guys (and I) can enjoy and play games rather than fighting verbally with others which version/console is superior.
If I wanna have a good laugh I check out DF's/EG's/LoT's comments sections; if I wanna read serious comments of gamers/fans rather than fanboys I choose PSXE.
Can't comment on fanboys of 20 years ago, though. But I guess Internet anonymity and a significant percentage of immature console owners clearly contribute to fanboy-mannerisms.
cheers

It makes no sense. Why are they paying more than they should? Just to maintain a hip quotient with teenage boys?
Watch how after the E3 MS presser they will proclaim Project Natal as the greatest thing in gaming.
Fanboyism will never go away. We all know that. However, I can't see how anybody could be proud of the very stormy history of the Xbox 360.

I actually used to own an XBOX 360, I had an XBOX live account, and had fun with a small handful of games. My fandom in PS3 got me a 60gig system at launch (actually, a pre-order a month prior, for which I camped outside an EBGames with a buddy... sidenote, some old guy saw us at midnight and offered us 10$ and told us to eat something... LOL. Kinda embarrassing when we turned it down and told him what we were REALLY there for).
Anyways, I sold my XBOX360 and games to buy an engagement ring (2 yr. anniversary today actually!). I had to choose which one to sell, and decided to keep the PS3 because I thought maybe the technology would get me more longevity. Also, I didn't know FF13 would be multi-plat. (A huge reason I got the PS3 in the first place......) For me, it was a choice based solely on the style of my use, plus the nostalgia I had from the PS1 and PS2 days.
I had terrific fun on XBOX live, to be honest, but I don't really notice any difference between that and PSN, other than the $50 i can spend on a game instead. Truly just personal preference. I'm not a fanboy, because I'm well informed, and the PS3 is the best fit for me and my gaming style. That is all!

I'll say one thing about early gaming, it was always clear which system was better because the two versions of a multiplat were clearly different due to the systems. Just look at Mortal Kombat. Now they are different due to developer folly and even developer fanboyism.

But other than buying a new 250gig CODMW bundled 360 last year, MS will never even get another penny from me cause I hate the totally immoral acting MS company with a passion.
So that also means that I'll never buy their any of their games new(not even on sale), and only used & super cheap.
I won't buy their add-ons or DLC, & I'll never ever buy "Live"(even though they continually try to hustle me by email into taking a full month of Live for only $1).
But of course, I DO enjoy my PS3, and all it's exclusive games much more than the 360 too
At my job, there are 2 "Lost Cause" gamers (believe me when I tell you that I'm using the word "gamers" loosely here) & they both only have 360's.
And even though I've constantly tried to get them to even "think(and I say the word "Think" loosely here too)about getting a PS3, they're stuck on their 360's like infestation of dung beetles hell-bent on eating a great big hot steaming pile of elephant sh!t.
They're always bragging about their 360's.
One of them is always bragging about how he ONLY PLAYS FPS, and is ranked 30something thousand, as if he's some f*cking big deal shooter.
And the other one said that he sold his PS3 last year cause it had no games, HA the the sign of a f*cking loser, never mind just being a fanboy!!!!!
And he just paid someone recently to mod-out his "bot box", so now he's been constantly bragging how he downloaded AC2, The Sabateur, and a numerous amount of other multi-plat games for FREE.
I got really frigging tired of hearing it, so I asked him that if everyone started dl'ing their games illegally for free, doesn't he think that those companies could fail & fold & then there wouldn't be any games for him to DL at all?
His only response was "I don't care"
So of course, I just had to put him in his place by belittling him in front of everyone else, just by saying "Of course you don't care, thieves never f*cking care about anyone but themselves, do they"?
Then I just had to twist the the knife in his back a little more, so I then asked him "So while we're at it, tell me something else, does our boss also know you're a thief yet too"?
And with that said, I just walked away while leaving him standing there in shock trying to comprehend what I just said in front of everyone.
Motto of the story is.....F*ck fanboys!

I purchase items based on research and which ones I believe to be a quality product. If I like a brand I tend to stick with it unless I grow dissatisfied or feel let down.
It seems he's equating individuality and freedom of choice with being a fanboy.

I walked in to a room occupied by 12 people sitting in chairs in a big circle, with about 4 chairs unused, I pulled one back and joined the group.
After blending in with the people, introducing myself and whatnot, a tall, bold middle aged man entered the room and turned one of the 3 empty chairs around, where after he sat himself down on it, facing the group.
Everyone sat up, blending in, I did too.
'Today we have a new member in our group.' The bold man said.
He signed me to get up with a quick wave of his hand. I put both my hands on my upper legs and got off my chair. I sighed once.
'My name is Dzyan'
'Hello Dzyan.' The group responded.
'And I'm a fanboy'
yeah, I guess you guys get what I'm saying. If I could have it my way, every screen and of course gaming media(and media player overall as in dvd/blu-ray and sound department) would be from the Sony brand.
NO samsung and especially no xbox(duh, Sony fanboy o.O), also computers would be Apple, as would phones.

Want to know something, you are NOT a fanboy when you can actually poke fun at yourself like you just did.
A real fanboy is too narcissistic to ever make fun of himself for anything he does.
BTW, the fanboy's brain is also instantly struck down & is partial eaten away by a R.E.1,2,3,4,or 5, type rabies virus the very first time he thinks he's being laughed at.

And while our man Pachter can be a doofus, I doubt he spends his time ripping on people that own Toyota's or BMW's. I like to think most people on this site feel the same way about consoles, you may have a preference for one console but hopefully we're not concerned with trying to convince other people they're wrong if their preferences differ from ours. I think opinions on almost everything are like this actually, whether its religious, political philosophical etc, generally trying to convert people with conflicting views to your way of thinking is an exercise in futility.

I'm shooting from the hip on this, but I believe there are other influencing factors that cause human favoritism outside of investment reasons alone.
I do know their are a good deal of gamers who have invested in more than one platform this gen and, yet, they still favor, even aggressively, a particular platform.
And to magnify this some more.
If Pachter's claim were true. Why are their so many flame wars over games on one existing platform ?
Tekken or Virtua Fighter? Better yet, 2D fighters vs. 3D fighters (we've all heard that one before, right?)
Final Fantasy or Dragon Age? Killzone or Call of Duty?
Surely gamers who have invested into a PS3 can afford, at some point, more than one game. Yet, fanboy remarks still exist.
Coke or Pepsi? Whoppers or Big Macs? I'm sorry Pachter, I like you, and I like philosophical perspectives on behavior. But, logically, I don't see your investment claim strong enough to offer a definitive answer.

there by far the most defensive and always like to take the high ground as if there much more superior.

SDF act as if there better, the ps3 is the most powerful thing ever connived much more powerful than the sun blah blah blah.
completley ignoring the fact that there are many things out there that are much more powerful than the ps3, my gaming PC for example would kick the sh*t out of the ps3.

When it comes to the video game aspect I have seen some extreme stuff, from all factions. I frequent the boards on GameFAQs.com and most days the only reason the general PS3 board is so active is because of the Xbots trying to start stuff. I don't understand this mentality, spending hours a day roaming a board just to start crap.
I'm sure every PS3 owner w/ friends who favor or favored the 360 have some very interesting stories to tell. I myself have a friend who bought a total of 4 Elite 360s shortly after launch, 2 for his family (himself & his kids play) and the others going to his brother and sister's family. The 4 systems he bought have since been repaired/replaced a total of 10 times until he gave up on all of them and bought PS3s for him and his kids, his sister and brother bought their own PS3s also. He does have 1 working 360 still but will not buy any more nor repair it when it does break. This story doesn't have a totally happy ending though, of the 2 80 Gig systems he bought 1 has had to be repaired once...

Seems to have gotten worse when MS sent out people like Aaron Greenburg to trash talk the competition and when sites like IGN sold their soul to MS for 30 pieces of silver.
EDIT: Get this, they also say God of War III's graphics are terrible and praise Halo but none of them even own an HD TV. they are all still playing their games in SD. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..........
