Square-Enix Reveals Dungeon Siege III

So apparently, this is the game that was supposed to make journalists do a "double take." ...well, I suppose.

Today, Square-Enix has announced Dungeon Siege III, the newest installment in the RPG franchise and developed by Obsidian Entertainment "with input from the original developer, Gas Powered Games." The franchise will make its debut on consoles and come to the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. They're looking to create an "evolved action/RPG experience" and in addition to breaking the boundaries of the PC realm, it will also boast an all-new co-op multiplayer mode. The gameplay should be interesting as the press release explains DSIII as a "seamless blend of intuitive action gameplay and a robust RPG system in an immersive world where every decision the player makes will result in consequences." Said Feargus Urquhart, CEO and Co-Founder of Obsidian Entertainment:

"It's a distinct privilege and thrill to become a part of the Dungeon Siege legacy. This partnership with Square Enix is a milestone for both Obsidian and the franchise, and the two companies' strengths for compelling characters and storytelling will shine throughout Dungeon Siege 3."

John Yamamoto, president and chief executive officer of Square-Enix, added that his company is "committed to expanding our portfolio of games across a wide variety of genres." Other features include being able to "pick from unique and highly customizable character classes," the chance to "recruit companions with unique personalities and abilities," and the "weighty decisions" players will have to make throughout the adventure. This all sounds great but we're still trying to wash the taste of Obsidian's latest, Alpha Protocol, out of our mouths. Maybe they were too busy focusing on this new project, or something.

Well SE certainly seems excited about it. Although I am sure this was not in the top 5 of Square Enix fan's wishlists.

Anybody play this franchise on the PC? I would ask Limited V, but he has been MIA since April.

I've played the series on PC and it is decent but Dungeon Siege 2 felt like it heavily borrowed from Diablo 2 almost too much. All in all a decent series and I am half excited about this but given the track records of both Square and Obsidian as of late I am withholding a full blown "oh boy!" until I see it.

I played Dungeon Siege 1 when it came out and it was a pretty decent Diablo clone. Not so sure about Obsidian taking the reins, though.

I played the first one, back in 2002, when it was brand new and technologically revolutionary (especially considering there was no APPARENT loading in the game anywhere)

Sooooo....when are we going hear more about games actually developed by Square?

Are they no longer able to make it on their own? Seems the only games Square and Capcom for that matter are pushing are games by other developers. "Expanding their portfolio" doesn't seem to be working because I am once again.....underwhelmed.

The only reason I am mildly interested is because the series is half-way decent to begin with but as for freaking out with excitement...not going to happen ever again over a Square offering I am afraid. They just don't seem to have the presence they used to any more.

Unless they announce a turn-based RPG that is...yeah never.

OK so this might be good... Who knows? I do know that if they can keep making different action RPGs, they can sure as hell make one turn based game. We seem to be able to have just about every other kind of RPG so why not turn based?

Maybe because the new generation of gamers wouldn't respect turn-based RPGs as much because they are so used to action. I guess square doesn't realize how many gamers actually did and still do enjoy turn-based RPGs

Because SE has a EXTREME EDGE thats why lol id love a good turn based RPG but SE just seems 2 b moving away from that in favour off action trying 2 satisfy new audience which wont work they seem 2 think theres no audience for turn based anymore mby if we r the luckest ppl ever they go back 2 being squaresoft

Too right.

If S-E hadn't made such a big deal about this, I'm sure there would've been a more positive focus on a new and pretty decent sequel to a franchise coming soon.

But no, S-E had to hype it up bigger than the next Halo.

That Twitter post about people doing double takes to this announcement was the icing on the cake. Only time that would happen is with an announcement of FF VII remake being nearly done without anyone knowing, or KH 3 coming along.

The more I hear from S-E, the less I care.

I've never played a dungeon siege game so this doesn't over excite me. I'll keep my eye on it tho, because I do love my some multiplayer rpg, but only if done right.

After what SE and obsidian have done lately I won't hold my breath tho.

I thought to myself a couple weeks ago, "You know, SquareEnix has done this before... hyped something that was stupid or a DS port. And you always get disappointed. Don't get excited about this, ok?"

Shortly after that, if not before that, I ignored my own advice and anticipated the news, checking back here daily in hopes of reading about something that would turn heads.

I got excited for nothing. I should listen to the smart side of me more often. SE = BS.

I have NO idea what Okada is thinking. All I can hope is that Square-Enix has some grand scheme, and this stream of mediocre game announcements is just smoke and mirrors to keep us distracted while they create the next genre-changing, mind-blowing, mega-blockbuster.

SE, you could still be the best of the best, if you would just stop venturing away from what you're good at, and focus on making games for the people who got you where you are today!

First take: Dungeon Seige III, Double Take: That's not big news.

I guess we all knew this would happen. I won't knock it because I haven't played a Dungeon Siege game but I know there is some kind of following. I kinda felt bad that my buddy Jason Statham got roped into making that bad movie version though.

I just hope it comes out as good as Dragon Age but I agree with everyone above in that they should balance this new direction with real JRPGs. Obsidian you need to finish New Vegas and prove yourselves after that Alpha Protocol debacle.

SE officially is retarded with their pants on their heads.

i wonder if they made this deal with obsidian before they found out that alpha protocol was messed up. still, its another way that square enix is westerning up themselves. go to hell square enix. you keep proving again and again that you have lost touch with all your fans and now i dont really give a crap about you guys anymore. you want to westernize all of your games and lose those fans, mission accomplished, at least for me that is. i believe level 5 is more than capable to pick up the slack.

by the way, seeing john yamamoto labeled as president and ceo kinda made me happy abit. granted hes the pres and ceo for square enix in america, it still sounded great that it wasnt yoichi wada. now if they can only fire him or at least put him where it doesnt matter what he does, like head of that final fantasy drink things.

Based on the title, I now know why they decided to announce it outside of E3.

If they were to announce it during or shortly after E3, it would just get lost in the pile.

Okay, I just checked out some vids for the PSP version of Dungeon Siege. It collected pretty decent review scores. I'll keep a distant eye on this game.

Still does not excuse SE from all the hype.

Square, why do you keep doing this to us, your fans?

For crying out loud, listen to your fans!!! How many people asked for a Dungeon Siege sequel? Now compare that to the number of people asking for a Final Fantasy VII remake or Kingdom Hearts 3.

Now, given, I haven't played a Dungeon Siege game, so I don't know what it's like, but Square built up all this hype over this?!?!? Really!?!?!?

Square's image is really going down the drain ever since they bought out Eidos. Come on!!! Bioware and Blizzard are making better RPGs than these guys now, and Square used to be the king of RPG games.

Wow all the hype for this I never even herd of the series untill now. You dissapointed a lot of people shame on you SE. They are many other games we wanted and this wasn't on the top of trhe list of games we wanted or even expected.

People don't tend to catch on to that kind of thing too quick. The whole spam bot thing I mean. Anyways, I don't know much about this game and from what I hear it does sound surprisingly like diablo and other games of that type. Hopefully, it is done well and as with so many other games on their way, I am waiting for the review.

Not really sure this is the game that everybody will be doing a "double take" on..

Dungeon Siege? It's not the lamest action rpg out there but it certainly wasn't the best. You take the same amount of action that was in Diablo II and stretch it out over a game about fifty times longer and you've got the yarn that is the Dungeon Siege series.

An old PC game that died years ago being resurrected by Square Enix... they should have gone with Duke Nukem.

see, this is exactly why im always disappointed in things because the industry has a bad habit of hyping anything like the second coming!
like the visceral reveal, yeah art cover is sooooooooo interesting!!!!!!!!!!!

I played both (Dungeon Siege 1&2) PC games and they were good overall. But they were always overshadowed by the Bethesda RPGs (Morrowind, Oblivion) and the Bioware RPGs (Neverwinter Nights 1&2, Knights of the Old Republic) which were superior if you ask me.

I found dungeon siege to be pretty forgettable and shallow as far as RPGS go. in the hands of Obsidian, it's a definate no buy for me.

Dungeon Siege was pretty cool for what it was. It was a 3D version of Diablo back in its hey-day.

This will probably turn out to be a more polished version of Sacred 2.

On the subject of Games going to storage limited DVD media:

I hope that soon the DVD disc goes bye, bye.

Oh God! here we go again!
Another SE multiplat game......yawn.

SE announcing an ""identical"" FFXIII for PS3 and 360 and what the poor folks got on the 360 version was inferior thanks to the limited storage capacity of DVD!

Expect the same for any 360 multiplats from now on since insiders at many Game Development studios including Obsidian are really upset at haveing to cut Game content due to the limited storage capacity of the DVD that the 360 uses.

I just hope that the only cut content is on the DVD version of Fallout: New Vegas.

PS3 and Blu Ray Uber Alles.
