New Gran Turismo 5 Demo Shows In-Cockpit Gameplay

Everyone is expecting a finalized release date for Gran Turismo 5 to be announced at E3 and in the meantime, how's about some gameplay?

The video below shows off a lengthy gameplay session and while you'll be yelling at some dope to "get out of the friggin way" in the first minute, things kick off pretty quickly. The menus are slick and engaging and another interesting tidbit to note is that AI drivers now have names, which is clearly another detail designed to enhance the overall realism and authenticity of the game. As for the actual driving, everything appears to be fluid and fast and while the cockpit view found in Need for Speed: SHIFT was great, this is whole different thing. The sound sort of sucks and the driver isn't exactly an expert, but you really do get an idea of how the final product will feel.

There are plenty of reasons to be excited for GT5 and although we're really hoping the addition of 3D wasn't the cause for the game's long delay (and we doubt it could be), such new features should be appreciated by the fans. There's little doubt that the newest GT will indeed be the best and every time we see new footage like this, we get a touch more antsy...

I kinda liked how he muscled his way into that turn.

I must add, the game looks a lot better than Prologue. A good sense of speed as well.

Indeed Stangman. Forza 2 is the best of the bunch in my book. Forza 3 was something I was banking on getting a 360 (again).

Man. Was that a mistake.

As amazing as all of that was, I have 1 major concern from that video. You had better be able to remove the driving line. I hate racing games with the supposed helpful driving line.

First off you can't take your eye off the line because it pretty much tells you everything you need to know and second, the game is supposed to be a sim, I don't ever recall seeing some color changing line telling me what to do when I was driving.

Maybe it's only me, but those driving lines kill it for me. I hated it in NFS shift demo and someone said you couldn't turn it off, so I didn't even consider buying it, hate it that much. Hopefully GT got it right and gives us that option.

You could turn the line off in Shift, and its much more "arcadey" than Gt5. I'm sure you'll be able to switch it off. Probably R3 like in Gt4's license tests.

The driving line is very helpful to many, but I'm sure it can be disabled. Due to the game being a Sim, it may prove to have a steep learning curves for new comers and those who need to dial in their control usage/settings.

I thought that looked like a great product! It's refreshing to see some promising footage.

Kraygen - You can disable the driving line. Also, I'm pretty sure this guy was using standard physics rather than Pro. Change those two and you'll have the sim you desire... in a few months.

You have nothing to worry about. It's pretty much confirmed you can play GT5 without the racing lines. There are even plenty of videos where it doesn't show the racing lines of this same demo build. As people have said, it's for the beginners and honestly it would help them tremendously since this game is true simulator.

awesome, thats fine, I just hate it when I hear about these graphically detailed driving games and when they come out all you can do is stare at this line that changes from white to green to red.

Being able to turn it off makes it a winner in my book.

Simply beautiful

Nurburing, the 7-8 minute long track
Definitely THE track for which truly shows a racer's true skill. Not only is it huge, but the twists and turns really try your patience. And then there's the melancholic straightaway.

I hope SCEA adds this demo as a Summer gift to us die-hard GT fans. Or maybe not (a lot of people will start whining 'bout how hard it is).

By the way, the racing line can be turned off. It actually isn't helpful in a real race. It's meant more for Time trial and License tests.

Actually, I don't recommend it for license tests. The line is solely for the beginners to get around the track. If you want to get at least silver, there are better lines and acceleration/deceleration/braking options.

That reminds me, they need to show more some real-time rally racing... All we've seen is bits of it in some of the trailers.

Hoping for the Pikes Peak race track (you know, the GT2 one)

Pretty hard to comment on the graphics since it was filmed with a low-def camera. The Ring always looks gorgeous though. I like the way the selection of cars is displayed across the bottom of the screen - in Prologue they stuck them in a tiny box and they were difficult to see. Hopefully this will have a good amount of force feedback through the wheel. That was my main complaint with Prologue - the feedback was so minuscule you could barely feel it and it made it seem like you were driving a computer program instead of a car.

If memory serves, you own the DF GT, right? I have that same wheel and the feedback seems plenty strong enough. In fact I dialled it down to about 4 on Prologue because I want to drive, not wrestle :)

You do realise it has settings? ...I'm not trying to be a smartass but If our wheels are functioning the same I'm surprised you feel that way.

Yeah I've got a DF GT, and in the options menu on the game I've got the force feedback cranked up as high as it goes. Perhaps "minuscule" wasn't the best way to put it. What I mean is, when you play another game like Need For Speed Shift, when you go off the track you can feel the vibration of the tires going over the ground. In GT5P, you might, or might not, feel a little bump as you leave the track, but for the most part everything is as smooth as glass. In NFS Shift, you can feel the engine torque through the wheel as you switch from one gear to another; you can feel the tires lose traction and then gain it back as you go over an irregularity in the track surface; you just feel connected to the road through the car. GT5 Prologue just didn't have any of that. You feel torque as you go around a corner, and a bump if you hit something hard enough. But nothing at all if you hit something at a low speed. You can't feel the back end sliding out on a rear engined car at all, you just have to go by the sound of the engine. Etc.

I'm hoping they make major improvements in that for GT5.

Ah I see, it seems you're a keen racer. This is the first wheel I've ever had and I've only used it for GT5P so I think it's totally awesome. But if you think improvements can be made, I look forward to them.

After all, being a collaboration between Logitech & Polyphony it should be perfect. There's something wrong if the likes of NFS puts it to better use.
