Ninth Mortal Kombat Confirmed, Debut Video Released
Okay, so that concept trailer for a "Mortal Kombat" movie that may or may not get made was pretty cool. But for gamers, it wasn't the real thing.
This, however, is. According to Electronic Theatre, Warner Bros. Interactive has officially announced the next entry in the long-running and well-loved fighting series: it's the ninth Mortal Kombat, and it's set to launch for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 some time early next year. The publisher even provided us with a debut trailer - view through previous link - that is obviously MK in nature, taste and style. The team has talked about giving us a truly mature-rated title and depending on how you look at it, this video is surprisingly devoid of copious amounts of blood. Of course, it ends with a few gut-wrenching scenes but perhaps we're all a little more desensitized these days; even the nasty stuff still seems cartoon-y. Then again, that may become the MK old-fashioned charm: to retain it's presentation without going too dark and realistic. Realism isn't the point of this series. Said Martin Tremblay, Warner Bros. president:
"We are bringing the Mortal Kombat franchise back to gamers with the talented NetherRealm Studios team creating the game fans long to play. Re-establishing the brand with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Mortal Kombat innovates on past games while staying true to the brand’s legendary characters and fighting style."
Added Ed Boon, Creative Director for developer NetherRealm Studios:
"We can’t wait for players to get their hands on Mortal Kombat. This game really is a response to what players have been demanding: mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever!"
We're really liking the extreme slickness and fluidity that permeates every encounter. So much has changed in the industry; nothing really plays like this, unless you count Street Fighter IV, which also stuck to a quasi-2D presentation but certainly played and looked different. So, what do you think?

MK lives of its brutality, blood and gruesome, ruthless fatalities.
I'm certain the fan base of MK is totally different than the fan base of SF or BB/GG.
Therefore I have to disagree with you, I don't think MK ever wanted to compete with other fighters.
It's simply a mature fighter that's all about gore and the sheer bloody satisfaction of devastating your opponent with a fatality.
I think the new MK could deliver on this area, at least I hope so.

I agree that after about MK3 Ultimate or whatever it was the series began to go down hill with the 3D and the fighting styles and extra crap but it really looks like they are returning to the basics with updated graphics and some added elements.
I highly disagree that this is going to be a crap entry but to each their own.

The fighting engine of MK may be a bit sloppy in the games since MK3, but they started turning a corner with Deadly Alliance, Deception, and Armageddon.
THIS is what MK should have always been. The engine looks amazingly similar to the engine that was in Mortal Kombat II, which is still one of the best fighting games of it's time.

And now we get the first trailer to what could become the best MK game ever (after the classics).
I mean, all recent MK games were crap.
Yea, I know, MK is not really a sophisticated, technical fighter but still, all recent MK games were ridiculous (in a pathetic kinda way).
The 3D setup didn't work and the animations were hilarious.
Glad to see MK returning to its former glory. Can't wait to hear "Mortaaaal Kombaaat" (theme song) or "Finish Him/Her" blasting out of my center speaker.
On top of that there will be tons of outraged German players (I'm German) 'coz the game will be either massacred by censors (otherwise the USK might refuse classification) or not released at all.
Then I can get my copy from my UK/US web shop of choice and have a good time reading through all those comments on Schnittberichte.com.
Gotta be some more info/footage at E3.

don't get me wrong, it was a cool vid, but they changed too many things.
i mean seriously, jax said that mortal kombat is an "underground tournament".....
WTF?? MK is a brutal battle between realms in which the sovereignty of the realms lay in the balance.
it's not some underground illegal fight club

He also didn't change that much and his intentions for a full length film were he ever to produce one sound completely badass. Yes, there would be the mysticism of Mortal Kombat. He downplayed it quite a bit in this short film, that's intended to be a prologue to the actual film, because of the view point that's being taken in the narrative. The short film we got is being told, primarily, from Jax's point of view as a policemen, which wouldn't be all that different were he a Special Forces Agent, either. He's human, he works in a real world without magic, etc., etc., so he would expect real-world explanations for what he's seeing, involved with, etc. But the mysticism would be there in a very organic and special kind of way.
I was also pleasantly surprised to find that the director of the short is a big fan of the series to the point where he dropped a lot of quarters in the old machines back in the day, and from the way he speaks about Mortal Kombat, you can tell. Which is drastically unike Paul W. Anderson, who gave us the first MK film, who claimed he was a big fan of the game and then failed completely to deliver a product that even remotely honored the source material.

But going back to 2D?! Happy beyond my wildest dreams. Liu Kang, Raiden, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero will get a work out. This has got to have online. My only question is are the combos going to old school MKI/II or are they going the MKIII route? God I do hope there is a E3 trailer. They would be fools not to have one.
Can't wait to get my hands on this.

MK is one of my favorite classics that usually seem to get better with each one they put out. Well... Let's just kind of forget the most recent one, DC vs. MK.
Either way, MK has been around for me ever since its first release. Such a classic that has adapted to today's demand with graphics and blood and gore. Count me in for a "must play" when it releases. Can't wait to hear more about this!

like deadly alliance had the new test your might and test your sight games.
deception, well that was off the chart!
added a krypt, conquest, switching styles, puzzles game, chess game.
armageddon added just the classic characters, and create your own fatality.
V DC ubiverse added the falling combat and going through walls combat.
every new entry has added something new to make the series better, so now instead of dropping those its time to pick up all the scraps and meld them together!!!
a little deadly alliance here, a little deception there, a little armageddon there, and a little V DC universe here.
id much rather see a sequel to shaolin monks, that was by far the best MK game ever released!!!
best fighting game ever released!!!!!!!!
but i know were never going to see a sequel to that, so this will have to do :(
