Tretton: PS3 Owners Are "Voracious Technophiles"

This is one of those times when all the readers will go, "hmm, do I fit into that category?"

In speaking at a recent event to help launch and promote Sony's 3D HDTV line, SCEA president Jack Tretton gave a presentation that opened a few eyes and perked a few ears. Based on the conclusions of a "recent survey," Tretton said PS3 owners are "voracious technophiles" who will likely embrace 3D faster than others. Not surprisingly, he says that if a consumer doesn't own a PS3, his or her interest in the machine "increases when they learn about those 3D capabilities." And here are some more relevant statistics:

  • 63% of PS3 owners are aware of 3D gaming.
  • 71% say that 3D games are "important."
  • 50%+ PS3 owners said that they would use their consoles more because of 3D gaming and 3D movies.

Tretton then went on to say that within this fiscal year, SCEA will release "20 gaming titles that are stereoscopic 3D compatible" and "every genre will be covered." The question is whether or not those statistics will rise over the next few months; early indications are that they will, now that Sony's 3D HDTVs are out and the first Blu-Ray 3D movies will start hitting shelves this summer. And the more we think about it, the more we think that supposedly fake PS4 teaser is actually a real commercial, but for 3D. Maybe we'll even see it at E3...

True that is my only regret. it seems like full functional working tech and with games like kilzone3 already maxin that shiz it'd be great to play in 3D.

Im an optomistic person. thats why i am open to move. i reckon it could work. as with 3D.

Well, look at it this way. If you don't already have an HDTV, it's not an extra expense if you were finally going to do the upgrade. If you just bought an HDTV, then yeah, that is an expenditure that you didn't plan on having soon.

As I would like to try out Wipeout HD and 3D and Motorstorm, I and many others are not crazy about 3D. Maybe if the tele's weren't so pricey. It just isn't something necessary with my gaming, plus is degrades the graphics. I'll get into it someday.

i know I'll jump on 3d, but not till the price drop obviously. i played call of duty world at war in 3d and i was actually impressed.

no head aches for me either i played for quite some time too.

they are right its not like watching movies in 3d, when u actually control what going on, the 3d helps you in the immersion quite a bit more than movies.

id say to all the skeptics out there, give it a try then wait for the price to come down if you like it.

man i cant.
its a great time t be a gamer

Are 3D games like 3D movies? In the 3D theaters, my eyes always wander around the screen and get dizzy. The movie sometimes want the character to stand out for instance, and the back ground would blur out. It would be a no for me if the same goes for 3D gaming. If Uncharted series get the same treatment, we'll be missing a lot of details in the surrounding.

ur right and that is exactly y people get headaches.

because in movies they force you to focus on things and if u dont and start looking around the screen then yes it will hurt after a while.

but in the games things are not forced.
no blur etc etc. that stuff was turned off.
so i was able to look around at everything and it did work pretty damn good.

and i think i read here that GT5 3d did it perfectly. no blur or anything it lets your own brain do the post processing.

at least, that's what i read about 3d.
games can easily turn those effects/features off. whereas movies cant.

thus the reason y i say, try it before you knock it, then wait for it. lol

The Jury is out for me on this new fangled 3D nonsense ..although i have not seen a 3d game in action its all abit pricy way too pricy for me and i'll be more interest when you dont have to wear glasses for 3d.

At the moment with my poor eyesight attaching another visual aid to my face is gonna look ridiculous ..ive also heard that you have to have a transmitter separate from the tv to keep the glasses and the flicker rate in sync which needs batteries aswell as the glasses !!! think you have to be seriously devoted to this step in technology otherwise this gonna be a slow burner.

I'll check out 3D when the technology improves and prices reach a more appealing range. As of now, I can't justify spending $2500 or more on a 3D HDTV which reduces the image quality that can only be enjoyed with glasses that cost $100+ a pop. I just spent thousands of dollars over the past couple years upgrading to HD.

When 3D HDTVs offer a better picture at a better price than the 1080 HDTV I have now, I'll consider upgrading.

3D in games requires a reduction in resolution to work properly. Roger Ebert also ranted that 3D in movies makes them noticeably darker.

If I had the 3D technology of course but I'm not convinced that my games are gonna look better in 3D. Didn't someone already make the point that our games are in 3 dimensions already, as in they're already designed with the illusion of depth!
And I'm yet to see anything in 3D in TV/Movies that strengthens the claim that gaming in '3D'(with the glasses), is gonna be worth my time.

I am definitely a technophile and interested in 3d, however I just don't believe the technology is up to the quality that we as gamers are used to.

Our ps3's are brilliant pieces of machinery, our hd tv's give us crystal clear pictures, and until 3d can do that without the aid of glasses and in perfect 1080p clarity, to me it just isn't ready.

I want it, but I don't want it until its of equal quality of all my other fancy gadgets.

3D gaming important? Not this generation. Maybe next generation. 3D gaming is so damn expensive that it won't be catching on anytime soon. How many people actually have a PS3 and a 3D capable TV? less than a million? You actually think developers will waste their resources and time developing 3D games when the user base is that miniscule? 3D will be a gimmick this generation and MIGHT be something worthwhile next generation. Not everyone has 6-7 grand to blow on a 3D TV, especially in these tough economic times.

If you want a top of the line Samsung TV it WILL run you 6-7 grand...if you want a lower end 3D TV then around 3-4 grand. Either way, people most likely don't have that much extra cash to blow on a 3D TV...especially if they already have a regular HDTV, there really is no use in upgrading. That is probably Samsungs best model 3d t.v. they offer. 3-4 grand is what people were spending on HD t.v.s when they came out so I dont get the fuss about the price. Jelousy maybe, IDK.

Not to mention Some HD tv's still cost in the high 3's. Its life, we move on, and in the mean time we wait for price drops!

Ive seen the t.v.s comparable to the price, that my HD t.v. was when I bought it. That being the case now that Ive seen a 3-d t.v. and cant wait to see what games will look like, I will gladly purchase one, when that time comes. Do I know about 3D, no, I know about 4D when factoring in the ever-present dimension of time.
Do I care about 3D? No. It's a useless medium, at least right now. How can it be used to enhance our entertainment experience in terms of immersion?
Will 3D make me use my ps3 more? GOD NO! I already use it for at least an hour every day, and sometimes much, much, much more than that, so no.

Anyway, I've got too much debt to bother buying an expensive and, at least for now, almost useless bit of tech.
