Secret GTTV Game Is Itagaki And THQ's Devil's Third

Well, that was interesting.

THQ boss Danny Bilson and that "legendary game designer" we've been hearing about have now revealed their new project on GameTrailersTV, called Devil's Third. The world premiere trailer just went on the air about two minutes ago and the video is below: as most of you know, Itagaki - often known as the "bad boy" of game developers - once worked with Tecmo to produce some of the finest action games available; they featured the name, "Ninja Gaiden." Well, Devil's Third is clearly a visceral combination of those classic Japanese influences with Western intensity; there's a huge amount of blood, massive gunplay mixed with sword-fighting, dudes running along walls in traditional ninja fashion whilst dodging incoming minigun fire, etc. Towards the end of the teaser, a female character runs up a wall and decapitates an unknowing enemy with ferocious speed. Itagaki himself made the announcement from Tokyo (and he always looks the same), and he said his new team at Valhalla Games wanted to embrace new forms of movement and action.

It certainly looks promising. They're combining elements we really never thought we'd see combined; one minute, it looks like a bloodier version of NG and the next, it's a third-person shooter with outlandish platforming. Gotta keep an eye on this one.

Sounds interesting, I wonder how balanced the gameplay will be. Will it be like Devil May Cry or some new innovative (interactive?) approach. I hope it has some depth to the storyline. I think we have enough 'go kill this' games with bad stories where you couldn't care less about the characters. We need more games focused on making the player feel like they are in the story like Heavy Rain did, I'm sure that would really help Move (pun intended) the 3d tech.

yea it stinks how we have to wait for the ninja gaiden ports, but the graphics look much smoother than the original versions on the 360 and we do get more features such as new weapons, modes characters, etc...

i agree with highlander, since all of his games went to the 360 so far, dead or alive and ninja gaiden, he seems to prefer the 360. i know theres ninja gaiden for the ps3, but those are basically ports. itagaki had nothing to do with that at all. the folks who owned team ninja actually assigned a different group to bring sigma to the ps3. if they released ninja gaiden 2 as a multiplatform at the same time instead of hiding it with the sigma term, then i would think otherwise. i mean, how hard is it to develop dead or alive or ninja gaiden to be multiplatform releases.

Highlander's right. Itagaki used to say that Ninja Gaiden (1) was on Xbox because he wanted to work with the most powerful hardware, but then he put all his subsequent games on the 360 (and pretty much disowned the Sigma versions on PS3), so I would say he is an Xbox guy.

I also thought I heard that he was actually working for Microsoft now. I guess that was just a rumor.

nice to see the blood and missing limbs of traditional Itagaki games are back!
cant believe they removed that from sigma 2, that is my favorite action game besides the removed gore. o and the missing boss battle.
that was the best one of the game!!!!!
it was so brutally hard ive never been so revealed in my life once i beat it.
finishing that 1 boss battle was harder than finishing the entire game of GOW3 on titan mode!

The boss was unique and unforgiving until you figure out his weakness. After-which he becomes one of the easier bosses in the game. You can defeat him unscathed with this strat.

Stand in the tunnel with a cave opening at either side. Charge a UT and listen closely, if you hear the rumbling AND see dust approaching from the distance, hold your ground and wait for the worm to get within UT striking distance. Otherwise, role into a cave hole on the side because he's approaching from the foreground where you can't determine his distance. While he's approaching you unleash the UT while he's a few feet from impacting you. You'll be able to stop him in his tracks and dish out some good damage before he gets moving again. I tend to prefer using the chain weapon's UT for this one.

And yes, NG3 is on my wish list for E3 announcements.

Shams, it's my fav too.

In fact, Action Hack 'n Slash games are my favorite style of single player game. I really enjoy examining the combat systems in detail. Which is why I really love the NG games. The more you invest in understanding the system the more rewarding the play becomes. I usually play games like these several times through and on more challenging difficulties. I managed to complete the original Sigma on Very Hard and Sigma 2 on Mentor. I don't know if I have the patience for NG2 Mentor mode on 360... it's truly insane.. like Rocket-Launcher madness insane.

Right now I'm working through Bayonetta on 360. I believe I'm almost through my first play-through as I just defeated what I believed was the end-boss but now I'm playing the Epilogue chapter. It's been a great ride and ranks among the best of this genres kind in my book. It's remarkably unpredictable in design.
Check it out if you haven't done so already.

Interesting indeed, and Square Enix can learn from this.

Hack and slash combined with shooting, now that's how you try to appeal to both east and west instead of screwing the east for the west.

And I never was a fan of Itagaki, maybe this will change after Devil's Third, but we'll see.

Wow, I don't get it. I saw the announcement and the trailer on spike hd and was I ever unimpressed by this "big" announcement.

I'm not a hack n' slash fan to begin with, but the visuals on this game looked terrible. Everything was square-ish, colors were drab, gameplay screams twitch gamer fantasy.

Let me explain the square-ish comment, The background and scenery was all squared off, no rounded edges, looked like the background was made from painted cardboard boxes. The characters were also squared off, the big decapitation at the end of the video was terrible.

Poor art design, poor gameplay, and from the sound of it, I'm guessing it will have a poor story.

I'm sorry, but I'm incredibly underwhelmed and totally disappointed.

I really enjoyed NG:Black, 'coz it was one of the few action games that actually were challenging. It also featured the best 3D rendition of Ayane (I didn't like Sigma 2's design of Ayane at all). There were some eater eggs here and there and the original NG 2D games were unlockable (though you needed the original Ninja Gaiden and NG:Black to get them all).

Hope Valhalla won't slack off on the difficulty as they did with NG2(360)/NGS2.

Gonna keep an eye on this one.
