E3 2010: Portal 2 Confirmed, PS3 To Have "Best Version"

Before this, we would've paid good money to have Gabe Newell stand on a PlayStation stage and say that one of his games would be the "best" on the PS3. We just can't believe it happened.

The Valve boss has interrupted the Sony press conference with the news that Portal 2 would not only be coming to Sony's flagship console, the new features will make this version the "best." They showed off a brief teaser trailer and although we have to wait until 2011, the mere fact that it's coming is great news for Valve followers everywhere. Portal was a critically acclaimed title that garnered tons of loyal followers, and the sequel is hotly anticipated by many. We're going to try to get the teaser vid ASAP - as we are with all footage from Sony's press conference - but in the meantime, maybe we should all take back a few of the bad things we've said about Newell... We're impressed that Sony never took any Valve slight personally and worked to land more support for the PS3. We just figured it'd be a cold day in hell when Newell stepped onto any PlayStation-oriented stage anywhere, but hey, this conference is getting more surprising with every passing minute. And it ain't over yet, so stay tuned!

We'll also try to work up a new preview for Portal 2 as soon as there's enough PS3-related information available.

He said it would use Steam to push out updates and DLC automatically on the PS3 just like it will on the PC, which is something M$ft won't allow. Free DLC (this is something Valve believes in doing for its titles) on the 360, hell no!

kinda fitting though turn about is fair play....just shows you how much Sony has gained this last year in fanbase and psn subscriptions.... I do feel a great need to get the Move on dayone not only will it be cheaper then Kinect, but it also will offer far better start lineup in this gamers opinion at a price i'm willing to pay....

I can't believe the job Sony is doing for us - getting the dyed-in-the-wool PS3 hater to say that our version of Portal 2 will be better than the Xbox version. I'm shedding a little tear of joy at having bought a PS3 now :)

This was certainly a surprise. It's hard to believe that someone that once stated--

"The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think it's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted."

..and..

"I'd say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a do over. Just say, 'This was a horrible disaster and we're sorry and we're going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it'"

..decide to show up at the conference and say that the so-called 'disaster' will be getting best version. Eating you're own words has a bitter aftertaste, doesn't it?

I like the fact that Sony gave generous support for Valve as he said and allowed Gabe to make an appearance. They could've simply not let him show up at the conference; I'm not sure if MS would've done that if he dissed the xbox.

This showed one thing to me that is a lesson we could all do with learning. Sony showed by helping Valve that they were "the bigger man". We could all do a lot more being "the bigger man" and forgiving people and ignoring their mistakes. In the end, being the bigger man earns you more respect and loyalty than retaliating.

I really liked the first Portal, which I just played and finished(on the same day) a couple of weeks back, and it was a real shocker to see this guy up on the Sony stage all apologizing for his own dumb ass acts, and I'm glad we all get the better console version of Portal 2, which I'm definitely doing to get, someday.

Yeah, if he hadn't pissed me off so bad in the past, I would have felt bad for him. Too bad my girlfriend realizes what a dork she's dating now because of the shock that came over me when he came out onto the stage. It was a very "No Way!" moment. It was awesome.

HAHA. Maybe they'll follow Level-5's example and put the first on the same disc. Too hopeful? Oh well, loved the original Portal, the only game I've regretted trading in, and this is definitely hitting my list.

A genius move this was. it gets rid of a lot of bad blood. I especially loved the "lets put our differences behind us"

Unlike Kojima who really looked like he did NOT want to be at the microsoft keynote, gabe looked geniunely excited at what he was announcing.

This is great news and with his comments i find it was a great way to un-do alot of things he said. It was much faster than we anticipated. The game looks great but i have no interest in it whatsoever, but im glad its being made and i hope it sells amazing, so that Valve will make more products.
I don't give a rats @$$ how long its been, i'ld love to see a new PS3 version of the classic Counterstrike. While its an older game, at the core its not too different from other shooters, save for player count and map count.(I leave obvious graphic and vehicle factors out here).
