E3 2010 Attendance Numbers, E3 2011 Receives Date

It's always amazing how quickly E3 moves, and just how fast we can put it all behind us and focus on the coming year.

This year's Electronic Entertainment Expo is complete, and the Entertainment Software Association has released the attendance numbers for the show: around 45,600 attendees from 90 different countries around the globe came to attend the major press conferences and visit booths from 300 different exhibitors. These statistics are a bit higher than E3 2009, which saw 41,000 attendees storm the Los Angeles Convention Center. Speaking of the LACC, this is where E3 2011 will be; the ESA has announced the show's return to the popular arena, and next year's event will run from June 7 through June 9. Highlights from E3 2010 include Sony's PlayStation Move and 3D presentations, Microsoft's Kinect and Xbox 360 Slim, the 3DS and a new Zelda from Nintendo, and other big-name games like Gears of War 3, Twisted Metal, and Killzone 3. We have no idea what awaits us at E3 2011 but in all honesty, we don't really care right now. We'll just recover from E3 2010 and thank God that summer isn't loaded down with high-profile titles.

But of course, we're only mere months away from the inevitable fall crunch, which is bound to be just as insane as ever.

I know seriously haha - what the hell is it with people thinking so much into the future these days? Can't we enjoy what we have...aren't we still trying to finish games these days? Gosh the gaming industry is changing to rapidly.

So I guess we can already start rumors out of no evidence about what Sony, Nintendo, and M$ will show at next year's E3.

AND DAMN IT SQUARE ENIX...you've pissed me off with the supposedly "NEW" KINGDOM HEARTS TITLE YOU HAD - OH IT'S CERTAINLY NEW ALRIGHT YOU DAMN MOTHER ****ERS IT'S DAMN NEW ...Kingdom Hearts Re: Coded - HONESTLY DAMN YOU SQUARE ENIX!!! YOU CONSISTENTLY DAY BY DAY DISAPPOINT ME!

At least...at the very least...Final Fantasy Versus XIII is still exclusive to the PlayStation 3. That's great to know...and Nomura sama better get his game up and show it at TGS 2010. The Japanese are waiting...they've been waiting 4 years damn it! And hell Nomura sama has been working on this for 7 years - WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON THERE?!?!

But if not this TGS...or the German Gaming show (forget what it's called)...IT BETTER BE NEXT E3 - or I'm considering it officially the next Starcraft Ghost - that's right....VAPORWARE!

Actually people are probably already booking their hotel rooms for next years e3, getting a room in a hotel close to the convention center would be impossible 3 months before e3. That and if you wanted to get in you'd have to start planning with in the next few months or be outta luck.

It's not that hard to get a hotel around there, closer to the date. There are dozens of hotels around there. Some of those people need to go a bit farther out to get some exercise.

This information doesn't really matter to us (except the date)

The fact that real gamers can't even go to E3 anymore is really ironic.

E3 should stop their west coast bias

They could learn a thing or two from the NFL, sometimes the Super Bowl in the East coast. I know it's a sport, but still it's still a massive event.

Anyway, it wouldn't hurt to hold it in Texas or Chicago either.

Come to this state and you'll see why so many others love to come visit over here. It's a 365 days a year vacation. Love this place.

@kraygen, they are letting regular people in. SCEA let 150 fans into the press conference for free. If one wants to go see the game booths then they would have to actually purchase tickets. If you work for a retailer, you get a discounted rate too.

The next super bowl will be held in Arlington, Texas LMAO certainly not cold, if you were being sarcastic, you are an ass for making me look like an idiot :) and in other news it will be cold in INDY in 2012 when we get the Super Bowl :D I really do hope anyone that goes there enjoys the place, it's a small city compared to every other city, but I promise you will enjoy it, it really is a beautiful place to see and some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. While being a city it still has the small town feel you expect from Indiana. Oh and be sure to see our glass dome in the middle of the downtown that you go under, it's beautiful and of course the Soldiers and Sailors monument in the circle plaza. Now I will end my travel brochure with this, Please enjoy INDY for what it is and you will love Lucas Oil Stadium! The entrance is monumental, you feel so tiny in that building haha

Oh BTW: The town I live in in Indiana has 113 people LOL but I have spent countless hours wandering around INDY.

1. Most of the NA games industry is in California (maybe as much as 2/3). The West Coast as a whole (esp. Seattle + Vancouver) probably runs that percent closer to 90%.

2. They tried Atlanta and it was too hot and sticky.

3. The Super Bowl is hardly an example of equal/fair treatment for fans; it has always been restricted to a select few locations (ostensibly due to climate). Most NFL cities have never hosted a Super Bowl. The only northern city for which they would even consider breaking that pattern is NYC.

this year has got to be the worst E3 ive ever seen!
i was worried everyone would waste their time on stupid motion controls and yet again i was right,

i really hope next year goes back to the way of last year, last years was probably the best ive seen.
not many big titles announced but there was plenty of them.
hopefully next year they take a page from last years book and announce lots of new games and actually big blockbusters too.
as they say quality over quantity, but both cant hurt!

or maybe they could fudge E3 next year and drop all the bombs at gamescom this year?

I hate to agree with ________, but I found this year's E3 pretty bland. No surprises (aside from Portal 2 on PS3); very few unexpected games shown; a solid but not spectacular line-up of games. I'm not disappointed per se, but I wasn't wowed either.

I honestly think the second half of the year will have fewer great games than the first half (which HAS been amazing).

As for the Spring crunch, well, my backlog is already way too big, and it's only going to keep getting bigger. Good times.

Also, maybe next year you should give John a real job and send him to cover E3. Seriously, I sometimes feel like Ben is the only writer for this site. (No offence to John or Arnold, I know you guys do your fair share too.)

To me, Sony kinda failed to match the conference they had in 2009.

GOWIII and Uncharted 2 really made a difference.

This year not so, but one thing's for sure, at least PS Move and 3D won't take up as much time for E3 2011 since they're out by then.

Same here about Square Enix.

In the business industry, you do your best to satisfy your customers' need.

And Square Enix isn't doing that, if it isn't for Square Enix's massive fanbase from FF franchise and Dragon Quest and some others, they would have gone down the dump by now.

I thought Sony's show was great. They showed more games, had ample time to give us a taste of 3D and Move as well as unveil some nice exclusive surprises and footage to games we are all anxiously awaiting. I don't get the cynicism from some. They whooped the competitions ass and walked away making people understand they will be the industry leader. They have to be. If MS press conference is any indication of the future of gaming, i consider gaming doomed.

Sony did an awesome job and I am sure they are already looking at what they can bring to the Tokyo Game Show. It was a great show, but i guess they can't please everyone.

jawknee, i think xbox might just have jumped the shark (overstepped their bounds). because, there was supposed to be a component in the kinnect (maybe it was a 1 gig ram or something that tracked the movements quicker, i don't know) but they said it would cost them more money. but at 150.00 for the kinnect, that amount of money still isn;t enough. by the way, i think the opposite maybe true now. that the move is a little or a lot easier or to make or produce games for. an update for re5 and heavy rain are already in the works. i wouldn't be suprised if 3d games is a huge issue for them either. getting off the topic, which 1 out of the 3 consoles will release the next gen. console 1st? my guess would probably be the x box not the wii so much. what say you?

PC World also reported there is a significant amount of lag with Kinect and the Move is much more precise.

Oh and apparently its not long a maybe that the Xbox will destroy your games, its now a guarantee if the console is moved while on. Anyone else see that Destuctoid video?

My dog got behind the TV and when i yelled at him he ran out quickly yanking my Wii down to the ground while it was on running and game and it didn't even freeze let alone destroy the game that was inside. lol!

Too answer your question, my guess is MS will jump the gun again.

The Wii is a well-built little machine, for sure. Of course, it doesn't have cutting-edge tech in it, like the PS3 (and in some cases, the 360), so it was easier for Nintendo to get it right. Just two Gamecubes and some duct tape. ;)

jawknee, could you answer another question for me please? or anyone for that matter. how does can the xbox 360 have similar quality in graphics and gameplay as the ps3 uses 50 gig blue ray discs when xbox only use cd roms that has a maximum space of 7 or 8 gigs? if the ps3 uses 50 gig blue ray discs (not all or some may fill up the space), does that mean the full motion video takes up less or the same amount of space. i've heard that some of the metal gear solid gameplay had to be cut to fit onto the 50 gig disc. if that's the case, why not have the extra content get a free optional download on the ps3 store. and, has a lot of games (i've heard that lost planet 2 and maybe ff13 is one of them) had there in-game levels shortened because of the xbox 360? what say you?

If all the consoles were doing was to streak video from the disc, then you would expect the video on the 360 to be more or less DVD resolution (SDTV) while the PS3 can do BluRay resoolution (HDTV).

Remember though that the games are not streamed, the graphics in games are created by the console itself from data on the disc, but created by the console. As long as the texture data and graphics engine are there, both consoles can produce 1080p images.

Now in a real world situation of running a game, the 360 isn't really capable of rendering a game at 1080p. It can render games at 720p and 1080i and scale the image up to 1080p, but it is never rendering at that level. Frequently 360 games render below 720p in order to save CPU ad GPU time for things like full screen anti-aliasing. It's a trade off that often produces a nice, clean image.

The PS3 is powerful enough to render games all the way to 1080p as WipeoutHD has shown, although even that game dynamically lowers (and raises back up) it's resolution when the action gets too much for the game to handle in 1080p. Like the 360 most PS3 games render at 720p/1080i. The PS3 can scale the images as well, as can all 1080p HDTVs. Many third party multi-platform games on the PS3 will render below 720p because the graphics engine is not full optimized for the PS3, and some titles (exclusive or multi) will render at a lower resolution to save CPU/GPU time for full screen anti-aliasing or other post production effects.

Either way, both consoles are capable of rendering at HD resolutions (720p or better), regardless of whether the game disc is DVD or BluRay.

People make too much of the size of the storage medium (fanboyitis); Blu-ray is better, no doubt, but the effect is rather limited, for the reasons Highlander gave.

As a developer, I'd rather have the Blu-ray, so I wouldn't have to futz with compression or multiple discs, but DVD doesn't necessarily "gimp" a game.

Warhawk can almost fit on a CD (that's CD, you know, what they used for the PS1); it could fit about five times over on a DVD-9, even with the expansion maps.

Honestly, yes, I think it peaked last year. New games will come along with better polish, and more games will achieve better results, but I don't think that we will see any more leaps in quality from the 360, whatever you see this year is about as good as it will get.

PS3 is still growing. The fact that you can come along 4 years into it's life and add 3D rendering and output should tell us all something about the power of the platform.

I'm also going to venture to guess your team while it does have an outdoor stadium, is probably in a location where the weather is good enough to be outside all year round, where as Indiana has brutal winters. I'm also going to guess you yourself don't actually play ;) In which I do so yeah, been nice talking to ya.

@techy

I couldn't agree more. Football is not an arena game, that is what the arena league is for. Football is an outdoor game on grass in the open weather where men work and play hard for victory.

Personally I am a big fan of the old skool smash mouth style, and love a good defensive battle. Go Redskins!

@JMO_Indy

No need to defend Indiana. Apart from anything else the Indianapolis Colts won their SuperBowl trophy in an outdoor game that was one of, if not the wettest SuperBowl on record against an outdoor team. I think that they destroyed the myth about Dome teams in that one game.

Go Colts!

Ok if the team itself had a hand in the stadium I would guess that they would want an outdoor stadium but it's more for the comfort and safety of the viewer. We are in tornado valley and infamous for random storms, in which case you put a lot of lives at risk in an outdoor stadium, if there was a tornado and I was in INDY I would head straight for Lucas Oil Stadium, that place is a fortress. Point being while the game originated outdoors doesn't mean a good game can't be played indoors. Look at hockey most certainly an outdoor game, but you know what they play nothing but inside. basketball once again originated outdoors, look where it ended up? I believe soccer and baseball should still be played outdoors though being the ball goes high most of the time. My point is this, if you enjoy the game, it shouldn't matter to you whether it's played inside or outside. and yes sir GO COLTS!!! :D

Ok if the team itself had a hand in the stadium I would guess that they would want an outdoor stadium but it's more for the comfort and safety of the viewer. Speaking of games that should be played outside because the ball goes too high....in Football (NFL/college ball) the ball typically goes higher than the ball does in soccer. Of course, the folks in Dallas know all about this thanks to Rob Bironas of the Titans.

As someone who has watched NFL games in the Kingdome and at Qwest Field, I would concur wholeheartedly. Domes are evil.
