Rising Developers: "More Emphasis On A Different Approach"

Obviously, Metal Gear Solid: Rising isn't much like past installments in the legendary franchise, and not just because we have a new main character for the very first time.

No, it's simply because that stealth has always been a focal point of the series, especially when it first kicked off back in the PlayStation days. And in looking at Raiden slash through dozens of enemies ala Ninja Gaiden, some of the long-time fans felt a little betrayed, despite many others greeting the footage with gasps of "holy sh**, that's awesome!" But you know, perhaps the most important thing to remember is that Rising "is not a Kojima game." NowGamer spoke to the title's creative producer, Shigenobu Matsuyama, and the director, Mineshi Kimura, and after asking if the game would follow the path blazed by the aforementioned master (you know, with a big emphasis on story), the two answered:

"It’s not a Hideo Kojima game – Hideo Kojima was very famous for storytelling themes, with the messages and the humor. We’re not trying to do the same thing, because I think we might not be very good at battling head to head [with Kojima]. This means there’s more emphasis on a different approach – we’re not copying what has been done before. This time it’s a katana sword action game at the core – that’s one difference between the games of the past and this one."

It sounds as if they won't be fixating on a deep story with complex character development, which MGS fans have really appreciated over the years. This could be one of the big reasons why MGS loyalists are a little annoyed and why we always hear comments like, "if I wanted to play Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden, I would." Clearly, we're looking at a different approach to a huge series title...but it's not like we haven't seen this before. Can anyone say, Final Fantasy XIII...?

Looks like another Japanese series somehow wants to cater to the Western twitch gamers by erasing certain aspects that made the series what it is. That being said, we have to admit that the Rising trailer at E3 got us plenty stoked; we just have to remind ourselves that it's not a Kojima MGS. That helps a lot when we do that.

Awesome, straight from the horses mouth.

Looks like this will be like how I've treated XIII. Which I still don't have, still not satisfied with a cheap enough price.

I've been saying all along this has a lack of platform for a meaningful, emotionally engaging story story, and this is not Kojima, this is the developer saying crystal clear just that.

Seen before or not, this is MGS, they are messing around with a treasured storyline here, not just series. I really want them to remove the title, and just say it's not canon, like MGS babel, or Acid with the way it's shaping up.

They are trying to spin the fact the game just might blow because they are missing the main ingredient in the MGS universe.

Hideo Kojima!

Yay, yet another great Sony proven franchise watered down for the Xbot twitch gamers. Anything the Xbox touches turned into a turd.

So sick of this. The Xbox and these devs desperation to appeal to whitey shooter loving twitch gamers is taking a toll on all the great games that gained popularity as Sony exclusives.

Thanks MS for your wonderful contribution to the gaming world.

I'll play this but I'm not putting any stock into it. I got my hopes up and kept telling myself Final Fantasy XIII would be fine and i was dead wrong. I'm still trying to wash the crap taste out of my mouth left by that loaf Square pinched called Final Fantasy XIII.

I don't have the links, but I could've sworn that Hideo Kojima shifted to helping the development of the Metal Gear Rising right after Peace Walker shipped.

Even if true it doesn't matter at this point. From these comments it's apparent they have no intention of giving us what we come to expect from MGS.

They are pulling a Squeenix and giving us twitching gaming garbage.

pft, Xbots are getting what they have been crying for since 2008. A Metal Gear Solid game with no story development.

Seriously, i don't understand what peoples problems with cut scenes are. My former Xbot turned PS3 owner made a snarky comment the other day when i was playing Peace Walker.

"get ready for a lot of cut scenes" as if i don't know MGS has cut scenes. He said he wouldn't play MGS4 because it has to many cut scenes.

Once an Xbot always an Xbot i guess.

I guess I was wrong about Kojima working on Rising then.

@Jawknee
Xbots just play nothing but nonstop violent shooters. Which is why it pisses me off when Japanese developers want to cater to Western gamers. It's like downgrading the story quality with more guts and gores. Its disappointing to see the industry go this way.

The MGS4 development team have joined Rising, however Kojima still is giving no creative input.

That is what might be confusing some people.

It's sad that due to Xbox's early lead the fans and some industry are still fixated on a few things that are ruining the potential of already great franchises this gen. I'm still gonna reserve judgment on Rising but FF XIII disappointed me greatly.

Alright then...MGS is officially finished - well it really was when Peace Walker hit shelves. I think Kojima sama can't add anymore to the story - but honestly you never know.

WHY KEEP THE DAMN NAME ON IT THEN?!?!? Konami: Money.

And even though Rising is supposed to be the sequel to MGS 2 and the prequel to MGS 4 - I DON'T GET IT! How the hell does Raiden go from super suit, super sword, red eye, and one eye - to the Raiden in MGS 4.

I can understand a transition from MGS 2 to MGS: Rising - but not MGS: Rising to MGS 4.

Gosh guys...this is not Metal Gear Solid. We heard it right from the director's mouth. NOT A HIDEO KOJIMA GAME - M$ of course is good at making illusions to the majority of the public by making it look like a HIDEO KOJIMA game by bringing him out like he's in charge of the game. BULLSH**.

Ben you hit it right on the head - Final Fantasy XIII...not your typical Final Fantasy...strange because it was the first Final Fantasy to be on the Xbox 360 (excluding FFXI).

(sigh!) what can we do? At least we know MGS has officially ended on the PlayStation console - and it officially ended with Hideo Kojima. So there.

Now we gotta hope for Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

meh, it's already "explained" in MGS4. the scientist guy, repairs him, so he looks different then he does in rising, even though he's a cyborg in both games now. Yeah... intriguing stuff... not. So no, u dont really need to play to find that out

I don't mind different approaches, I really don't...but the MGS series? Really? That's where we're going to start this revolution?

I have an extremely fanatical MGS friend, who's just not at all amused with what they've done. So...he's getting the MGS Peacewalker PSP bundle (it's actually already there waiting for him at his house, he's away right now doing some military training), and has no interest in rising.

Now, I realize that's a rather..narrow-minded view. But, let's face it, the MGS series was predicated upon certain realities of gameplay. And this simply ruins those tenets.

I'm all for ingenuity and such, but there are just certain games that are supposed to be a certain way. Twisted Metal, for example. Did anyone really expect Jaffe to deviate much at all from the originals? Why would anyone...ruin a successful model? Why? I don't get that.

It's kind of like an insult to the US gamers, when Konami developers think by trying to appeal to the Western gamers, they have to not follow Kojima's footsteps, deep storytelling.

MGS4 sold pretty well in the West. Storytelling works. Don't be lazy and rely on the name of the franchise for easy presales. I honestly hope this game bombs so they can wake up from their dreams.

If there was ever a time to utter my catch phrase, it is now.

"Microsoft is ruining gaming"

That being said, while I was, and still am against it, I think I'll give it a shot for the same reasons I still go see those crappy Resident Evil movies, for the continuity (more so with MGS than the RE movies, but you get my point).

I just wanna see where they are gonna take this, hopefully they stay true to MGS in the sense of story atleast. But seeing as how it was made for Microsoft, I highly doubt it.

I personally thought it looked pretty badass. You also have to think: It's NOT a game in the main series. That's why it's not Metal Gear Solid 5, it's Metal Gear Solid RISING. Final Fantasy XIII was a different story. It's supposed to be part of the main titled games, and then they changed it way too much. Not as badly as FFXI and FFXIV though. Those, I still beleive, should have been dubbed "FFonline 1" and "FFOnline 2". That makes much more snese than tagging them into the main numbered series of games.

That's not true. They are claiming it takes place after Metal Gear Solid 2 and before Metal Gear Solid 4 and if you played MGS4(not assuming you didn't, just a reminder) Raiden talks about how he went to save Sunny from the Patriots and was captured and turned into the cyborg. This is what this game is supposed to be about. So it does fit into the main story arch.

Kojima may be claiming its not a true Sequel but it is apart of the main story.

Yeah, unfortunately, though it isnt a main number or hold a significant place like peace walker, it is indeed Jawknee says. It is canon.

MGS Acid, Snake's Revenge, those kindof things aren't canon, they are putting this right smack into the canon. All the while saying they arent intending to focus on "story". How wonderful...

You know what's so maddening AND annoying, the xbox community doesnt even care. yeah sure they scream that they want a MGS, they jump up and down but when it comes down to it, they aren't actually going to buy it. They are getting a dumbed down game, for no reason whatsoever. When Kojima productions could just be moving on to bigger, better things. Peace Walker should be the way MGS should be proceeding from now, small scale, masterpieces every now and then.

I feel kind of bad for Kojima. He said he wants to direct something else after MGS4 was over. He ends up making Peace Walker, now DS ports from MGS. He's been pressured to do nothing but Metal Gear games. His life revolves around nothing but Metal Gear. I really wish he get the chance to start a new IP.

On the good side, I read that Ubisoft will be using PS3 as lead platform for all their games.

I've believed all along that Konami forced Kojima Productions into putting MGS on the 360, which Kojima used to bargain for another exclusive (Peace Walker). Yes, Rising is canon, but it is not a numbered game, so it's more a spin-off and not necessary for the whole story.

What I think is that it will still have some amount of cutscene; this is Kojima after all, no matter what they say about it. I think the story will span the time between 2 and 4, starting off with Raiden getting shafted trying to save Sunny, turned into a cyborg, saving her at long last, then maybe some other random twists and turns until he arrives to meet Snake in MGS4. Can you imagine cutting up those GECKOs, or Vamp? That would own.

Also, FFXIII is not a fair comparison as every new entry in that franchise is different to the last. The only thing that has people riled up is the focus on kill corridors and the mangling of the ATB. Seriously, what the hell is that about it? Get killed while you wait for the bar to fill, launch one attack and wait again. It's ridiculous. Still, every FF is different, so to the people whinging about XIII being so different, it's only natural.
Peace.

I'm not a long time MGS fan because well I wasn't gaming when most of them came out, but MGS was one of the best put together games ever made.

Rising on the other hands screams cheap thrills. Woooo look you can cut people into pieces, ok and now what? How long is slicing watermelon going to be cool? How long before popping a guy into the air and cutting gets old. If you really like it, maybe an hour.

I'm sorry rising has nothing going for it that has staying power. MGS4 you can play several different ways. While rising is going to be the exact same thing for however long the game is and considering the gameplay footage, the game will probably be short.

I highly doubt I will ever buy this game, even bargain binned. I can find something else to spend my $30 on.

And like I said before in the earlier Rising thread,

I'd love to see a bunch of spin-off done, with EACH one just doing the history of a single character, as seen in each one's own eyes leading up into their own current place in

im really looking forward to this the footage shown at M$ confrence was really impressive!
its nice to see a game add in environmental destruction, and let people use it to their advantage.
instead of runing up and slicing each enemy, why not just destroy the pillars holding the roof up above them?
thats one thing i really want to see in shooters, especially KZ3.
they promised us environmental destruction showinf off the first level of the game where you have to shoot down the building.
i was expecting to have more of that in the game.
instead of shooting 50 people in a building, just shoot the cement walls causing the whole thing to collapse!

thats one thing shooters really need, to help spice up the gameplay, force the player to think and observe his surroundings.
instead of just cover spam.

I still think this should've been called 'Metal Gear Raiden: Rising'. Without Snake being in the game, there's no point in having 'Solid' in the title. Also, I assume the title 'Rising' is there because this takes place in-between MGS2 and MGS4 and shows how Raiden became the bad-ass he is today. Essentially, his rising. I don't know... I guess they're just trying to fool people into thinking Snake will be in this game the same way Microsoft has been fooling people by having Kojima present this game at every E3.
