Square-Enix: FFXIV In The "Critical Finishing Stage"
It was part of Sony's E3 conference and confirmed again for 2010 and although we don't yet have a finalized release date, Square-Enix insists it'll be ready for this year.
In speaking to RPG Site, FFXIV producer Hiromichi Tanaka said the game is still on track, and the development team has reached the "critical finishing stage." Thing is, when it comes to MMORPGs, there can be a lot of snags in the design and roll-out process, so fans of the genre have often been skeptical concerning the possibility of a 2010 launch. This being said, Square-Enix appears to be chugging right along, and without hitting any serious obstacles. Said Tanaka:
"Yes, that (2010 release) is the plan. In fact, we were planning to bring the Director, Komoto-san to this interview as well, but he had to remain in Japan to work on the game, so it is really at a critical finishing stage at the moment. We hope you and your readers will enjoy the game when it arrives later this year!"
Of course, those who aren't interested in MMORPGs will have to wait for news of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which was sadly absent from E3 this year. The disillusioning part about that is simple: Square-Enix promised a closer look at the game earlier this year and here we are, at the halfway point in 2010, and we know little more than we did last year. 'sigh' But at least FFXIV is looking good.

"OH YEA...there might be a chance it'll come out to the Xbox 360!"
So I guess they really are liars. However it's not official yet...so far it's just for PS3 and PC.

In an MMO, there are multiple servers. All of which need to house information on EVERYTHING. Not only that, but it needs to take information from all of our actions and relay it to everyone else. Packages are constantly coming into those servers and back out to everyone nearby. The worlds are incredibly complex. Especially for events that are run by the servers that everyone in the game participates in.
There are constant upgrades, 24 hour in-game support, constantly evolving storylines, and more. MMO's need constant work and supervision from the developers. If it was free, they would run out of money quickly, and MMO's would not be profitable. Last time I checked, video games are not developed by not-for-profit agencies funded by United Way or other non profit investors.
Large scale MMO's CANNOT operate without constant cash flow. Plus it's a business. No one is going to make an MMO that merely maintains itself. Companies are not going to put effort into something that merely keep it afloat. They want to make a profit. And we shouldn't expect them to do other wise. It is the real world we live in, afterall.
Now, all that being said, and after we all accept the fact that MMO's need constant funding and are similar to cable companies in that you have to pay for a service that is constantly worked and improved upon, we can discuss the fact of whether or not you're interested in MMO's.
If you don't want to pay fees, than MMO's are not for you.
Let it be known, that I completely 100% understand where people are coming from if they don't want to have to pay subscriptions. I understand and respect that. However, MMO's cannot exist that way, and that means MMO's are likely not for you. If you're against it, don't pay or play it. SE knows lots of people won't play because of the fees. But they're ok with that. They're aiming at folks like me who will and understand the necessity for fees for service.
Look, it's different from the PSN. PSN has numerous ways to offset the cost of free online play. They have the PSN store, now the premium service, and advertising. MMO's, aside from one you download off the internet that have a kajillion annoying ads, do not have those side services that can offset the cost of functioning.
The long and short of it is this. MMO's would suck monkey butt if SE was not making a profit. And they definitely wouldn't if it meant they lose money. Why would you invest in something that has a guarantee of no return? It just doesn't make sense people. Get with the program. MMO's will never be free AND of good quality. The words "Free" and "Quality" cannot coexist.

As for versus, disappointing that there isn't any news for it at all. From what they've shown thus far, looks like we won't get it until christmas next year.

This game will go against the "original XIII" - I guess some can think of it in that sense. But you're honestly right - just call it XV considering it really is XV. I mean it's not some spin-off of XIII...it's a completely different game!

There has been plenty of podcasts, videos, and article on FFXIVCORE if anyone is interested in how this game plays, and what it looks like (the character creation stuff is pretty freakin awesome, especially when compared to FFXI on ps2)
I can't wait to start up my subscription for this cuz it definitely will save me money in the long run. I've been playing FFXI for about 5 years on and off, I believe my play time is around 150 days, so ..well that's a lot of hours. Some of it fighting, some of it fishing and crafting, some of it just hanging around with friends, or helping people out with quests etc etc... this game will save me money because as of right now, I've bought a new PS3 game every month (not including psn games) for the past year or so, I know I won't be doing that once I get my hands on XIV.
I love RPGs with insane amounts of depth, FFXI delivered handily in that department, and from what I've seen, read and heard, XIV is going to be quite the epic game. Now ...please don't have micro transactions, that's the only thing that will ruin it for me. Can't play a game where the other players can just buy their items and exp with real money.

Also, I won't skip every game (I won't be spending ALL my free time on XIV, at least after the first week lol) It's just right now I'm buying anything that seems even remotely interesting, pretty much one game a month. Stuff like Dragon Age and WKC I ended up trading in about a month later because there wasn't anything else to buy. This year I'm looking forward to Fallout New Vegas and LBP2, that's about it I think. A little excited to try Move though...

I played that game for about 4 years.
Yes I had some fun with it, but looking back, I wouldn't recommend it.
So much potential, but SE didn't listen to input from gamers for SO long.
Think they are ignoring their fans now? If you haven't played FFXI, you missed out on just how much ignoring they would do.
At least 2x they released unfinished expansion packs that weren't completed until at least an entire YEAR later. So you bought the game, and waited 12+ months for them to actually finish it.
Beautiful game, but man, they took YEARS to fix the very very broken in that game.

With that being said, Versus XIII, while it may appear to many to be very different from XIII in many ways, it maintains the story about the crystals, and I would assume also the Fal'cie/l'cie storylines. While not actually being a branch from the numbered game, it will have tie-ins. Also, Nomura (I think) said that he didn't feel as though the attitude of the main character fit into anything portrayed in the numbered franchise before, so it'd be better to do it in a spin-off. Whatever, I just want the damn thing before I die.
Peace.

Oh great, might as well call it FF Versus XIV instead of Versus XIII.
