European PS3 Launch Announced. March 23rd, 2007

An embargoed press-release regarding Sony's PS3 launch in Europe has just surfaced. After months of waiting, playing guessing games, and correcting rumor after rumor, the official word is in. The launch date is March 23rd, 2007, which can finally put to rest all of the rumors of the console being delayed into April and then some. The launch will come with only 60GB for sale, but Sony says that 20GB versions will go on sale later on in 2007 if the demand is there for them. The price for the 60GB will be £425 in the UK, as previously speculated. The console will cost AUD999.95 in Australia, NZ1199.95 in New Zealand, and 599 Euros in the rest of Europe.

As far as availability, Sony is saying that 1 million PlayStation 3s will be available throughout Europe. But the real treat is that Europeans get one amazing launch lineup worth 30 games! A majority of the games are standard Blu-Ray Disc titles, but a good chunk of games will be able up for download via PlayStation Network Store. The 1st party launch lineup will consist of Resistance, MotorStorm, Genji, Formula One: Championship Edition, and Ridge Racer 7 (SCEE is publishing RR7 in Europe). EA, Activision, Namco-Bandai, Sega, Take-2, Ubisoft, Vivendi, and Sony Online Entertainment will all have a launch game or two for the launch.

In regards to the announcement, Ray Maguire, SVP and MD of SCEUK said, “Following the hugely successful launches of PS3 in Japan and North America, we are absolutely delighted to be able to bring significant numbers of PS3 to the UK. To be able to launch with over 30 titles including retail versions and great downloadable gaming experiences across every genre shows that this is our strongest launch line-up in the history of PlayStation, and is what PlayStation fans in the UK have been crying out for.”
