Gran Turismo 5 Must Be The Best Simulator Of All Time

At some point, a game reaches a position of hype where the expectations can't possibly get any higher. And now, after a big delay, the addition of 3D, NASCAR, head-tracking, and any other number of nifty, potentially revolutionary features, Gran Turismo 5 has no other alternative: it must be viewed as the greatest racing simulator of all time.

Racing fans know Polyphony Digital and Kazunori Yamauchi won't produce a shoddy product. They never have and in fact, these guys don't know what it means to "settle." If they needed the extra time to tweak and hone, they would take it. They might annoy their fans in the process but they're just not going to put a game on store shelves that doesn't represent their absolute 100% best efforts. We respect this trait in any developer. But perhaps unfortunately for them, GT5 has sort of attained this mythic status in the gaming community, largely because of the long wait and the continued details and footage that can force people to replace their keyboards after drowning the tool in drool. Therefore, if GT5 falls just shy of the "greatest ever" label, even by a tiny amount, it will be considered a failure by many.

You hate to see that happen. Sometimes, though, it's unavoidable. Technically, GT5 only suffered one actual delay so it's really unfair to compare it to Duke Nukem but if the latter ever had arrived after 11 years of waiting and speculation, if it wasn't the single best shooter in the history of the industry, it would've been mocked incessantly for all eternity. The advent of the Internet has allowed hype to blossom and spread like never before and if you give a hotly anticipated game enough time, it will invariably reach a plateau of expectations...and that plateau is nothing short of perfection.

So good luck, Polyphony. We're pullin' for you, but we don't necessarily envy you.

And I'm sure it will be. The game looks gorgeous and even my Xbox buddy who doesn't really like racing games said he wants this. Good thing he bought a PS3 when the Slim came out.

well x360 is just a console for masochists mostly americans . since 90% of x360s have been already traded in for ps3/wii in europe and japan. x360 doesnt even have a game worth mentioning let alone playing since all its games are either multi or on PC.

On topic, Gt5 is the best sim racing game ever made and i am sure it will sell 15m copies ww at launch

i've been saying this for about a year now and i get shunned every time i do because of consumer loyalty and the unknown fact that this game will be the best ever... but, i think GT5 is the most "over-hyped" game in years... people say GTAIV was bad, or any halo but, all i see on N4G is a GT5 article every 5-10 articles...

this game may be one of the best racing simulators ever (we don't know that yet) but, it's going to be over-hyped to death... it already is... it's already been anointed the best simulator by the internet and it's not even out yet... polyphony have a great marketing campaign going because, they are letting the internet hype it for them, they don't even have to lift a finger...

most over-hyped game in years... go ahead and give me my thumbs down because, you've bought into the hype machine too... it's ok, it happens all the time...

I kinda agree and disagree, because while GT5 has received an insane amount of hype, can you really "over-hype" a game, if it delivers?

Granted we don't know yet if it will or not, but if it does, isn't the hype right?

Gran Turismo DEFINED the racing genre.

It's as simple as that
Every sequel redefines the genre and makes the competition (like Forza) look like crap.

Forza has been trying to be as good as GT since the original xbox days.

What also fascinates me is how Need For Speed and all the other Arcady racers can't even stand up to GT.

While Need for Speed, Blur, etc. need a sequel every year. Gran Turismo with one release does the job for 3-4 years. That's a testament to quality.

Thus the hype is justified

Your choice of ignoring the simple fact of GT5's feature set. There isn't a racing game out there that matches GT5's known features.

come talk to me after it released and ask me if it lived up to the hype... perfect 10's is the only way this game will live up to the hype...

Bones, that's incredibly naive of you if expect GT5 to hit perfect 10's. It won't happen accross the board, but I bet there will be well over 20 of them.

I won't argue that GT5 has alot of hype built around it, but honestly, what did you expect? It's been 5 years since the last game, and when one considers that each full fledged GT title sells around 10 million copies each, it's easy to understand why.

even though I'm not a big fan of realistic driving games(sims), I might just have to buy it to astonish random by passers.

Well, I've been waiting for this game every bit as long as the rest of you and I remember that originally the concept for GT on the PS3 was they PD would produce the initial release of the game with a basic number of cars and tracks and then the rest would be purchased as DLC. PS would continue to develop and update the game, and their revenue would come largely from selling the cars and tracks.

My how times change. I also remember that Prolog was supposed to be some kind of release-able beta. Except of course they basically rewrote the game - again - since then. Which is fine. But we've been waiting in anticipation for so long and then with the many teases about release and one official delay we have been waiting longer than we should. Longer than wa a good idea. Anticipation and expectation are high. An earlier release would have helped prevent such high expectations. So, in the end, if they can't meet the expectations that they themselves have created, PD only have themselves to blame.

I disagree with you on the matter. The problem GT5 faces is that everyone already has created mass expectations of this title.

Some are completely unrealistic, and it will show in some of the reviews.

I also believe that GT5 might be the unfortunate victim of a global economy that still has yet to recover.

Really I dont think they've lied to us at all and with this huge a project, a delay of an official time was inevitable. for me, Gran Turismo is the only racing game I play, outside of wipeout or if u stretch it modnation's aswell. I'm absolutely content waiting, because I know it's worth it. I know what else is out there just isnt as fine a product.

No doubts there, GT5 does look spectacular... but I need to play the new engine myself and get a good feel on whether the dual-shock controller works well instead of using a wheel. I don't like the self correction when not driving with a wheel, so maybe a wheel is the only way to go... to really extract the best out of this game...

I will wait for the reviews and get to read (and see) what people are talking about when it comes to GT5...

My brother in-law, only has a 360 and sick because he wants a PS3 for the sole purpose of GT5.Hes an avid racer but he knows GT5 is second to none. Forza will know its true master soon enough.The variety this time around is stunnerlisous.

I'd say if ppl are over hyping it, then they are just as much to blame as anyone else. Just because someone else claims it will be the best sim ever, doesn't mean you have to believe it.

Gran Turismo games hook us for YEARS. With a long development cycle and us waiting here it needs to once again redefine racing in games.

And it will, Polyphony know what works and what's most important.

I have no doubt that this will be the Game of the Year.

I actually hope that GT5 blows. I hope the hype for it bottoms out and the game becomes more of an enigma after a few years, or even known as the biggest let down of this generation of gaming. Versus XIII never really hyped itself much until recently, they don't care about showing the public what their unfinished work is like, which is proven in the scarce amount of in game footage that is seen. That, in my opinion, is better than flashing around what your work in progress is like. Hell, it's better than releasing a game that is only half made and sell it at the same price as a regular game, lol. I would really love to see GT5 fail, but with all due respect, it's going to be awesome and the best in it's genre. No game will be able to touch it in quality, but it's quite easy to add gloss effect to cars and make such high def backgrounds. The only thing making the game look at awesome is the fact they have no tie backs and have all the time in the world to harness the power of the PS3, and with up to 60GB of space with Bluray discs as opposed to 8.5GB on a DVD, that is just an easy assumption, right? If it wasn't for Gran Trismo being a Sony Exclusive, it wouldn't look as great as it does. There are only 2 games that I know of that are on the PS2 that could output in 1080i, and they're both made by Polyphony. That in itself is enough to have faith in the quality they've pumped into this game.

If you say so but GT5 will have around 1000 cars that will look amazing (200 of them will higher detail) and quite a few real life tracks that are insanely accurate. Creating all of these things most likely is not "easy". If it was easy we would most likely be playing the game already (of course adding extra features like 3D, Move, Damage Physics..... has added to their time table). Just my 2c.

I hope the game fails because of the amount of hype they put into it, and you know they put a lot of hype into it on person. They released the game half way done for crying out loud and sold it full price, lol. I just love irony, and a game with as much hype as GT5 being hated by the long time fans would be the ultimate irony. I love the Final Fantasy series, but FFXIII turned out to be a disaster, and created the irony of a beloved game going under. Though FFXIII had slowly taken away any faith I had in it as soon as the 360 got a hold of it, and then Leona Lewis killed it for me.

I expect and predict that Polyphony will put out a better GT game than Turn 10's most recent efforts, but up until that point I haven't played a better GT racing game than Forza 3. It really is a quality effort from a team that, when judging from prior examples, works only as hard as they need to.
There really hasn't been many of these games, and I would have a real hard time going back to good o' GT4 on PS2. WHile it was impressive at the time it looks pretty antiquated today.

I'm really pumped for this game. I recently got the ODST/Forza3 bundle from ebay for a killer deal. Playing Forza 3 has reminded me of how much I enjoy GT racing games ( ODST reminded me of how boring a series can be when the proper love and care isn't applied).

While Forza 3 is quite enjoyable and great on pretty much all ends, I fully expect GT5 to raise the bar once again beyond anything the gaming industry has seen in the past.

I can't wait for another meticulously engineered SPU augmented powerhouse to play.

If GT5 fails to live up to the gamer's expectations in even the smallest way, we will see a repeat of GTAIV, DMC4 and FFXIII. While it will get rated highly, it will be strung out to dry by the gamers and declaimed as the worst title in the franchise in the face of its immense quality and production values.

But yes, GT5 WILL be another example of awesome in video game form. Only possible on Playstation.

It's true, GT5 has to be completely and totally awesome or it will be deemed a failure on a level. perhpas not a complete flop, but if there is something not perfect, it perhpas will be magnified as a problem.

obviously fanboys are going to attack this whether or not its awesome. I was at karate the other day talking with a mate, and then some 12 year old kid walks up to me and is like "do you have a ps3" im like "yh" and he's like "xbox is better", and i was like, oh dear this kid is such a young douche fanboy.

I doubt I'll be getting this, due to the fact that it isn't exactly my cup of tea. However, the more I hear about it the more I think I wouldn't mind owning one mega sik simulator. Well, it remains to be seen, if I have the time and money for it why not. But, I won't really care if it's the best simulator of all time I'm confident it will be amazing either way so if I went for it disappointment seems unlikely.

First day buy, definitely getting the Ultimate Edition, I don't care what it costs. This game is the reason I bought a PS3, may as well go all out ;)

GT WILL be the best sim for a few main reasons, Greatest car selection ever.

Greatest tracks and matching track design ever offered, this applies to GTs custom tracks and their real life circuits.

Greatest physics system.

There will be many other reasons why GT will be the best and none of them have anything to do with hype and none of you should have ever given a rats arse about the hype. You should know GT will be the best based on its merits alone.
