Sony Undergoing "Future Platform Related Activities"
There have been rumors concerning a new PlayStation and although it's all speculation, one thing is certain: Sony has started work on "future platform-related activities."
In a recent Develop interview with Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida, we learn that Sony is looking to the future with the help of its first-party developers. This change in focus concerning how new hardware was created came about after the departure of Ken Kutaragi, and the arrival of Kaz Hirai as president of SCE. The latter wanted developers in on any new hardware-related meetings, which is probably a good idea. As for new platforms, Shuhei said:
"Yes, we are undergoing many activities that we haven’t yet been talking about in public. Some future platform related activities."
Later in the interview, Yoshida goes on to say how SCE "underwent a rescue mission for its first-party studios, bringing together top engineers from around the world to build a universal game engine." As of now, it's Yoshida's major role to "connect hardware guys to developers." Well, we're certainly on board with that philosophy and you shouldn't worry about the PS4 popping up early; you had to assume Sony would be at least talking about the next platform by now, right?

lol, but, if they do kick the next one off early i have no fear that they will screw it up like Microsoft, who shall remain nameless. The more I think about it the more it makes me think about MS's reaction to it. They had the drop on Sony last time and still produced a subpar machine, so I can on;y imagine what would happen if they were sneak attacked. That would be a great WTH move, if we're lucky, the Xbots will wish for that 35% failure rate.

Sony needs to ensure that they stay at the top of the game this time and without arrogance, without any craziness, but as they are doing now that involve great and memorable risks for their consumers whom of which are The Gamers.
We want a PS4 that of course all developers can use easily and make games on with ease so that none of the fanbase is neglected like the PS3 launch. Do that and have an easier-to-handle pricetag and I guarantee a win. Sony already is doing such a thing and I hope they follow through.

I think the reason for the long life of the PS2 and hopefully the PS3 is that the hardware is initially difficult, but ultimately has very deep reserves of performance to be tapped. I can't help but Hope that PS4 continues that tradition.

I think we'll still see longevity in the next generation. Even if they make it easier to start off with, devs will undoubtedly get better as they spend more time with it.

I'll elaborate a little with some of my perspectives on the matter of hardware accessibility.
If we are to visualize that the hardware is the color palette and canvas in which an artist works with. Why not allow the artists (developers) all of the available colors from the beginning to create great works of art?
The acquired abilities of a person will greatly influence the overall artwork. Do you think Bob Ross or regular Joe (insert any semi-skilled dude) could create the same work of art with the same tools?
Why lock away some colors deep down in hard to reach areas?
As we've seen with more approachable architectures in the past, like the Xbox and PSX, devs are still able to make significant strides in the look and quality of their games as they grow more skilled with their tools and medium.
Wouldn't all of us PS3 users have benefited with even better games early on if Sony had offered some hardware a bit more approachable?
Would the Gabe Newell's and John Carmack's have scoffed at the hardware if it's potential was more accessible?
Would we have to suffer through a slew of poor quality 3rd party games? Not to mention the many 1st party games that didn't even use advanced SPU processing?
Though a different perspective of mine is this.
Perhaps this issue wasn't so much Sony's problem in the first place. Rather the industries resistance to the path computer processing was evolving into. I'm sure many horse and carriage manufacturers resisted the change that Henry Ford offered.
Isn't the Cell processor the more advanced evolution of parallel processing that the industry was having to move towards anyway?
Was this learning curve un-avoidable?
Maybe Sony was just ahead of the game the entire time. Even before the Gabe Newell's could understand it.
Just some thoughts I wanted to throw out there.

Just as a master artist hones their technique and use of color over the years, so developers improve and deepen their abilities and knowledge.

On the plus side, we'll have MGS4 and GT5 quality games off the bat since the devs will know exactly what they are doing.
But on the negative side, for me at least, is we'll have MGS4 and GT5 quality games off the bat since the devs will know exactly what they are doing. I kinda like the rough graphics when a console is starting off, maybe not the graphics, but i like to see the leaps in advancement in that department. Kinda justifies the purchase and sorta kinda becomes the gift that keeps on giving.

I'm not sure if it will have a touch screen. There were no details about its features just that Japanese retailers were listing a 4000 model.

Let's not forget how long of a process developing hardware is...actually sorry I do the hardware software development so I might have a different view on how long it takes.
Regardless it is a lengthy process. The PSP-4000 could very well be coming soon but to get developers to input how they would like to see new hardware speaks to a large amount of revision worthy of a new system not just an upgraded one.
Anyway, it very well could be anything at this point but it's always fun to speculate.

About your user name, I would assume it is a way to say "big gamer"? if you are so big into gaming, why would you quit gaming if a new advancement in gaming was presented to you?
Or by bigamer, is that a play on words, saying you are a bi-gamer, meaning you swing both ways (play PS3, 360, maybe dabble with the Wii?) No, that was probably too clever for you to figure out.
Anyways, you didn't think the PS4 would be released 10 years to the day, after the PS3 was released did you?

My first thought though was the PSP2. A large development base is going to be needed off the bat to make it a success, because even though the PSP has managed to ship over 50million, and put a dent in Nintendos ownership of the handheld market, it is seriously lacking in top-notch must have exclusive games. Also, Sony would need one hell of a marketing solution for it to sell it to the people that seem to think that the PSP is a waste of time.
Peace.

If I were to plan on releasing a new console in say 2014, I'd at least start talking about it now, so that we'd have plenty of time to get everything right.

Right now in terms of visual presentation what can the PS4 bring that the PS3 can't achieve visually? I mean I know there's more to a system than visual display but let's be real, most people want to see the upgrade, the difference from one console to the next in visual gaming. I mean why purchase the next-gen console when last-gen's console outputs similar or a simply replicated display? Maybe someone knows something I don't or I'm just out of the loop but will the PS4 be able to take visuals to another level? Has the PS3 not maxed out our game developer's visual dreams?

M$ stated at one point that it wanted to create a handheld that would play 360 games. If SONY could accomplish this with a PSP they would dominate the handheld market.
I have come to the conclusion that Microsoft has a BORG mentality. Developers who are weak assimilate and behave like drones. SONY of course is likened to the Federation. Journeying to where no console manufacturer has gone before.

Right now, most games play at a native resolution of 720p. Many games at lower resolutions than that...
More RAM and SPU's would do the trick. The key for Sony in the next generation is to get their NETWORK expanded.
Sony should go the route of the PS3 (swing for the fences) with the PSP2. They will be going up against the iPad and 3DS. Good luck...they better be able to give you PS2 games on the go at the very minimum to compete...

The only way the PS4 will be a day one buy is if it is moderately priced, hopefully sony have learnt their lesson.

not a revision like the 2000, 3000, and go but a whole redesign of the system.
though one has to ask if sony were to bring a new PSP out and it is releasing within a years time, why would they release GOW ghost of sparta on the old PSP?
GOW is one of sonys flagship titles, so you would think they would hold it off for the new PSP save it for a release title.
anyway, IF they are doing a new PSP 2 it has to be crazy powerful!
dont bother with the 3D crap though, without glasses it has such a limited range and effect, and no ones going to sit on the train with a pair of glasses on!
just make sure you support it properly, none of this ps3 to psp ports BS!
i want games made for the PSP, original on PSP, designed for PSP.
none of this we have MNR so lets bring it to PSP.
we have LBP so lets bring it to PSP.
we have Assassins creed so lets bring it to PSP.
we have MGS so lets bring it to PSP.
why would i go spend 300+ bucks on a new system, not to mention cost of accessories, games and such.
why would i go to all that cost just so i can play new versions of ps3 games?
i want new titles, new experiences i can not get on my ps3 like echochrome or i cant think of anything else!
there is no point releasing a new system, if your not going to support it properly!
o, and obviously it has to be priced well, unlike the ps3, go and move so its certainly not off to a good start!
where in a recession here, remember that, sony are not the only ones hemorrhaging money!

i bought a kingston USB flash drive off ebay 3 weeks ago, cost me 100 bucks.
not bad if you ask me, considering a HDD would of cost me the same price.
as for PSP being as powerful as the ps3, impossible.
well not impossible, but impractical.
the amount of heat it would use, and the amount of power it would require would reduce its battery life to a nanosecond!
id love to see a new PSP, the more power its got the better, but between a ps2 and ps3 is as close as were going to get.
