Assassin's Creed Could Eventually Match GTA's Popularity

Assassin's Creed II was one of the very few titles of late 2009 that wasn't intimidated by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. And not only did ACII succeed, it ended up selling almost 9 million copies.

Due to the immense popularity, Ubisoft believes their critically acclaimed franchise will be just as big as Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto "in the not-too-distant future." UK marketing boss Murray Pannell told Eurogamer that while AC hasn't quite reached GTA's lofty pedestal, he still sees no reason why Assassin's Creed couldn't achieve similar popularity. It's about "longevity and building decent products" that are "properly marketed," he says. Let's not forget that Assassin's Creed II holds the record for landing the most magazine covers ever. Added Pannell:

"I believe with the success of Assassin's 2 we have now got an opportunity to position ourselves as one of the true triple-A blockbusters. Are we as big as things like GTA and Halo and things of that nature? Possibly not at this point. But I think we are uniquely poised now as a property, as a franchise, to certainly consider ourselves one of the must-have games whenever a game launches on Assassin's Creed in the franchise."

Now, 9 million copies is downright amazing, although we should probably mention that GTAIV has sold over 15 million units to date. But Pannell says Ubisoft will continue to market the hell out of AC, and that certainly includes the upcoming Brotherhood installment, which is set for a November launch.

"As marketing director, it's part of our role and responsibility to position it from a consumer point of view as one of those big blockbusters through decent marketing campaigns. One thing we've been doing already is advertising Assassin's: Brotherhood on TV this summer, three or four months before launch. That only helps position it in consumers' minds as, 'This is a big game I need to consider as one of the true blockbuster franchises'."

And yes, they do expect the new title to sell even more than ACII but we'd like to point out that it will require the backing of the critics, as most games always do. Assassin's Creed II was much-beloved by reviewers, and so was GTAIV although at this point, GTA might be able to sell based on name-brand alone. AC isn't quite there yet.

I'm interested in the new ACIII with a new protagonist more than the old. Having watched a trailer or two with my wife for ACII, I won't be getting that one (ACII) as she really didn't like the blood. I know it's a fine line, after all you are 'killing' the target in-game, but it's easier for her to think of it as a game with less blood flying. I kind of agree with her. I would love it if game developers would implement a simple slider option so that you can tone down (or up) the amount of blood depicted. A similar slider for reducing gratuitous language would be very helpful as well.

So, Ubisoft, how about it guys? Can you do anything for use gamers with wives that dislike blood?

See, now the thing is, that if there were options, I could tone down blood and language when wife and child are within ear-shot or sight of the screen, and dial it back up when they are gone.

@Bigamer,

No, actually I didn't know that, nor do I remember calling you stupid. However, thank you for that information, it makes it much easier to go get the game, which I have wanted to do since launch.

@Alienage,

No, not quite. Let's put it this way, life is easier when I don't buy games or movies that offend my wife. Considering that she loves football, and gaming and is pretty tolerant in many other ways, I can cope with her not loving games with too much blood, especially as I am not too fond of lots of gore myself.

Seriously people. read the comment before making accusations or assumptions.

I agree with Highlander, some games i don't like to play in the company of others out of respect for them. Killzone 2's constant use if the F word was ridiculous and only made the game embarrassing to play in the company of others. Namely my wife since she is at my side a majority of the time.

I see. That's gotta make it tough though since most games these days are loaded with brutality. Some obviously have more gore than others. ACII was quite brutal but in a stylized kinda way.

I gotta say, I've played through both games and the violence itself is far more dramatic, and leaves a much greater impact than the little spatter of blood you get here and there.

When you swing a halberd up over your head and sink it into your opponents skull... or drop him to his knees and club a mace to the back of his neck... or thrust your double hidden blades into his eye sockets(awesome!)... blood or no blood that's officially off limits for kids and, in some cases, wives (or husbands, I don't discriminate ;)

Although I never get to play games till the whole family is in bed anyway, so my only hindrance with my game purchases is money. My wife is pretty cool with it all as long as we can afford it. (She actually watched, and enjoyed, GOW III from start to finish. I wasn't even allowed to play ahead on my own)

Not if they continue to spit these out like CoD and Guitar Hero.

I don't think this will ever be as popular as GTA simply because GTA took people by storm. It was a hit the moment it released because no one had ever played a game quite like it. It's too late for Assassin's Creed. Especially since there is really nothing that is original or great about the franchise. ACII was much better then the first game but it's still nothing to continue going back to. I'm so close to platinum and when ever i pop it in to try and obtain the rest of the trophies, i immediately remember why i dislike like this franchise and turn it off within minutes.

This is where I, respectfully, disagree with you, for once. The fact that it's a semi-realistic, non-superhero game where you can go anywhere and do anything makes it somewhat original. Kinda like Spider-man without the super powers. You can climb up buildings, run across the roofs of them, then just jump off (into hay or water of course). Defeating large groups of enemies with some of the first really good sword combat also adds to the fun. This was one of the first games that I completely disagreed with a lot of people about.

Now on the other hand, with GTA also being within my favorite series, I would have to say that AC won't quite reach it's level. GTA's like iPod, if it has the name, people buy it, no questions asked.

Personally though, I doubt AC will ever reach the lofty status held by GTA because it doesnt have the formula imo to be a phenomenon. Ask a random person on the street, hell ask my grandma and they know GTA.
But either way I love AC and II was simply incredible.hope brotherhood can stack up!

I've still to play AC2, but my friend swears by it that it was one of the best he's played, so I'm still looking for a good deal on 2.

But in comparison to GTA, well, GTA was a bit overhyped. I was a bit disappointed by GTA4. I dunno. What should be there was there, but it lacked the oomph that would get me playing it over long hours..

I almost guarantee I know what it was. The lack of customization like in San Andreas, and the added realism. The change towards realism was significant enough to turn people away from the series.

I did prefer looking for those feathers instead of the whole damn pigeon, but no, ACII hasn't reached the GTA phenomenon level yet.

It's definitely got the potential if Ubi does it right. If they pull the Wachowski brothers with this series they can kiss that hope goodbye.

Hey, I liked the Prince of Persia movie. It was a good movie and a great video game based movie. Although it didn't exactly follow the games storyline, it interpreted the story somewhat more realistically, and it ended up being far better than what I expected. Maybe I'm slightly biased because I liked the games, but I honestly thought it was a good movie.

Edit: Forgot to mention, it obviously couldn't stand up to something as big as the Pirates movies, so they definitely do exaggerate things from time to time.

I think I am the only person that hasn't stayed "best firneds" with GTA over the years. I played III alot at first, but never bought 4 and put in mabye 4 hours on a friends copy. TO me, honestly I like AC better, but I like the gameplay of infamous and AC alot better than GTA. I feel alone in this lol.

So far, AC has kept my attention a whole lot better than GTA. I played the hell out of vice city, but after that I could never really get into another GTA game for more than a few hours.

The AC games are perfectly tailored to me and style of play that I enjoy. So for me, yes I can definitely see AC being bigger than GTA, it already is. But in general I don't think the masses will ever be as big on AC as GTA. Prove me wrong Ubisoft! I love this franchise.

I have a feeling that brotherhood will be the worst in the series. It's been rushed, it will focus on multiplayer and will have minimal story. Just my guess, but if I'm right, it could hurt the entire series.

Man I hate Ubisoft so much. Instead of letting people choose the future of AC's popularity, they have to inform everyone that they will be as popular as GTA forcing people to actually believe this. AC will never be as popular as GTA. This of course is personal opinion, but AC will never have the same appeal to me as GTA. But there is no denying, Ubisoft has one hell of a title under there belt.

Ubisoft, give me an Assassin's Creed 2 GOTY edition, and I may be inclined to agree with you. No, I kid, but I do want it.

Here's the thing. AC COULD match GTA's popularity, but the chances of that happening are slight indeed. GTA pioneered open-world gaming, semi-realistic violence and coarse humour rolled into a single, effective and very, very controversial package. Because of that fact, it was able to garner the attention of the masses from the very beginning, and the series only continued to get better (with the possible exception of GTAIV), even using it's portable iterations to draw some of the best review scores on those consoles. Assassin's Creed on the other hand, was hyped to high heaven, and failed to deliver on the promise it held. Sure, the Parkour styled movement was fantastic, as was the sword play mechanic, but both became boring and repetitive, especially over the (15 hour?) lifespan of the game. Sure, the second game (according to the reviewers) beat the ever loving crap out of the first in terms of quality and diversity, but its portable iterations have been fairly lackluster at best. And with the seeming whoring out of this franchise with the already announced or released six games in three years, and the promise of a new game every year, it seems as though the quality will fall quickly and dramatically as the dollars take precedence over the creative direction.

NOW THAT IS HOW YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO RAMBLE!

That is all.
Peace.
