Midway Keeps Rolling Out The Games
Midway's 2007 Gamer's Day, held two days ago at the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas, certainly got everyone's attention. First, they issued their much-appreciated Unreal Tournament 3 info, then they unveiled that new WWII shooter for the Xbox 360, Hour of Victory. And now, there's yet another new FPS on the horizon for the big publisher.
It's called BlackSite: Area 51, and it represents the last installment of the long-running Area 51 series that began in the arcades. In development with Midway Studios, we've heard whispers about this one for quite a while, but this Vegas press event saw the first official announcement. It's being developed for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, and is loosely scheduled for a summer 2007 release.
But make no mistake: this is no sequel to the very mediocre shooter released back in 2005. This is an entirely new endeavor, penned by Gears of War writer, Susan O'Connor. If you've heard of Area 51, you could probably predict the storyline, but it appears they're adding some depth to the plot. The U.S. government has enlisted the help of an elite covert military group to quell an alien invasion in a small Nevada town...yep, that town. Midway did announce the story wouldn't be so linear and straightforward, and even give the player options at certain times; do I follow my orders or do what I think is right? That kind of thing.
It's certainly a FPS, but with the demo on display at Gamer's Day, attendees were able to check out the new squad tactics facet. Apparently, there's a little Rainbow Six involved here, along with what Midway is calling "a focus on emotionally intense firefights."
It looks like another promising title to us. Keep it up, Midway!
