Medal Of Honor Proving More Popular Than Black Ops?

Well, on the PlayStation 3, anyway. And if one actually sits down to think about it, the seemingly bizarre phenomenon makes a bit of sense.

According to PS3Center, it seems that pre-orders for the PS3 version of Medal of Honor are outpacing pre-order numbers for the PS3 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops. The site mentions GameStop, where Treyarch's shooter is fifth and EA's is third, and overall, it seems that while the battle is close at some stores, it's a runaway victory for MoH at others. So what's the deal? Well, the PS3 beta being available certainly should help pre-order numbers so that's part of the explanation, but we believe there's another aspect: the history of the franchise in relation to the history of the PlayStation brand. Let's not forget that this series debuted on the original PlayStation and was widely considered to be one of the first great FPSs on a system that always bowed to the N64 and GoldenEye in that category. Several future installments remained exclusive on a PlayStation platform; Medal of Honor: Frontline, one of the best games in the early PS2 library, was out even before the Xbox was on the market.

People do remember. And although the franchise in question has taken a dive since then, there are still a lot of PS3 owners who remember the glory days of Medal of Honor...which, at the time, could only be experienced on the PS1 or PS2 (with the exception of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault on the PC, which came out around the same time as Frontline). Lastly, CoD is always more popular on the Xbox platform, so maybe these early pre-order statistics aren't too shocking at all.

Call of Duty should just go Xbox exclusive. They don't have anything else. While all the bots will be playing Black Ops well be playing Killzone 3 and Medal of Honor. Who wouldn't be more excited?

Im glad i didn't play for MW2 or i would really be upset. I liked TreyArchs last CoD but I'm done. never again will i give money to Activision for any game let alone Call of Dooty.

It's why I still play MAG everyday. Been playing the MOH Beta with my sons though, and there is a good multiplayer suite there once it gets some of the kinks ironed out.

Call of Duty is a wonderful game. In fact it's a gem. Though, I'd love to see it with better graphics, effects and longevity, but that's not an option at the time being. So I'm sticking with my PS3 copy and looking for more. If the PS3 does not have it, then it's a huge downside, at least for me.
I love my PS and I love my Xbox, but I love "gaming" more than these two.

Well, I wouldn't care if Call Of Duty went Xbox 360 exclusive since I'm boycotting anything published by Activision. However it isn't fair to deprive non-360 gamers the opportunity to play the game. The game is still very popular among PS3 gamers, even if Activision and Microsoft seem to be in bed together over it on the 360.

I love the COD franchise. I hate IW. Its not all on Activision. I understand Activision has there problems too, but they didn't develop MW2, and IW gave into the MP too much. Still had great times with MW2, and im really looking forward to black ops because I respect Treyarch.

I'm also looking forward to MOH, been playing the beta, I think it could be a solid shooter.

I'll leave the decision to buy based on review on the final product (I've read that the beta suffers from some casual glitches and connection issue, the normal stuff) so its best to leave the judgement on the retail versions.

Going back a bit though, those were good times when we played MoH splitscreen using the multitap. Niice!

i dont have any problems when playing the beta. the only thing i saw that wasnt right was that the laser sight isnt supposed to be unlockable but somehow i got it. all the level 7 unlocks were usable like the laser sight and muzzle break. the only problem i found in sniping is that i keep compensating for bullet drop but theres no need to.

They release a beta to get the online functionality ironed out. Seeing as how MoH is going to be released within a matter of months, I highly doubt they're going to overhaul those piss poor graphics and useless hit detection.

What are you saying? BC2's graphics are not better than those in the MoH beta? Is that what you just wrote?

I was completely sold on the idea of MoH but the beta has ripped my anticipating guts out. It'll be a huge "no thanks" for me. The game is CLEARLY attempting to rip off MW so I'll just stick to the original.

Read it again please..i said the SCREEN TEARING was no worse then it is in BC2. The models and entertainments looked fine in fact the environments look MUCH better in BC2 and MoH then they do in MW2.

i rather play medal of honor, even in its beta state over some broken game anyday. at least it doesnt spawn the enemy you just killed right behind you 2 seconds later. plus the campers who just go for the nuke killstreak. too bad they dont get it when i play, i shoot down every damn thing flying in the game. if its possible, i may have shot down my own teams uav but i dont care. i just keep the sky clear.

@Jawknee ur comment isnt valid. Some of us actually reall do like Call of Duty and would be gutted if we ever lost the franchise. Im gonna be honest and admit COD (especially the Modern Warfare series) have been an absolute blast.

I still prefer Killzone 2 as my fav FPS to be honest but TreyArch and IW should be commeneded for their work

I am with Jawknee on this one. One to many COD's for me, and yes, that's a self inflicted.

Plus, my views on FPS's have changed when it comes to multiplayer. MAG's vast levels and massive player counts make MW2 and other FPS' seem small and confined.

Call of Duty on both the PS3 (step brothers game my PS3) and the 360 (came with my $50 purchase of a brand new Elite 120GB, 8 games, and two HDMI cables and two controllers. From a different step brother who bought a PS3 and didn't want his new 360.) were fun for a month or so. Definitely not a time grabber for me. I play one round set it down and play a more well polished, entrancing experience. I prefer depth to the obviously over popular twitch games such as COD, I've stated my feelings on the new MOH Beta and needless to say a lot of people didn't like it but still I hold that footing, and I am a lover of the MOH classics such as Frontlines so don't get me wrong. My point is the COD series isn't the most popular series on the PS brand simply because of the demographic playing it. The demographic enjoy more mature and in depth experiences hence to as why the Heavy Rain game could have only been successful on the platform rather than on the 360.
360 = Twitch / PS3 = Focus.
BTW the 360 has since been airbrushed a clear coated Candy Apple Red it looks nice but the small ports and such are still black as well as the Power button, HDD, and the right side of the 360 (mine stays vertical at all times.) Looks awesome.

Modern Warfare 2 was my only CoD. Feel free to check out my review of it, and you'll see that even though I gave it a decent score, it's way too buggy for my liking.

I can't STAND the auto-aim malfunction in quick scoping. What a cheap-o glitch that is!! I can't believe they wouldn't fix that...

Anyways, I'm not a huge FPS fan to begin with, but if CoD:MW2 gets such incredible reviews from everyone but this site (most accurate I've seen), why would I want to become a FPS fan? Does the genre have no pride?

Long and short of it... I'm not getting another Call of Duty ever. The only reason I play it is because many of my old university buddies and groomsmen own and play it. I NEVER play it solo online or off.

Sad thing is Underdog, MW was waaaaaaaay better then 2. Less bugs and better environments in my opinion.

If you don't have BFBC2 yet i think you should try it out. The multiplayer is way better then MW2. Less bugs better environments. lol!

P.s. Jawk, you have a pretty decent K/D ratio for such a short period of time playing the title online in MW2. You must have played other CoD games.

Amongst my friends, I have one of the smallest K/D's at 1.31, but because I only ever play with my friends, I always have reliable allies and have the biggest win% of my friends at 1.34... which still isn't very high. lol. Like I said... not usually a FPS player. lol

Ha, i haven't looked at my K/D ratio in months. I played the hell out of MW when it came out. It was new an fresh and a lot of fun. MW2...not so much. It felt like a step backwards. It has nice character and gun models but the glitchy game play, ugly cardboard like environments, bland colors and garbage single player campaign ruined it for me.

The only thing i really liked in MW2 was the Spec Ops mode. That was a lot of fun playing with a friend.

Well, that's interesting...

To say that CoD should just go 360 exclusive is incredibly small minded IMO. I mean, it isn't just on the Xbox that people love those games. It is simply a far more popular option due to the lack of games, and seeming mob mentality of owners of that system. The difference in sales numbers between the two versions is not as great as some of you would expect.

As for MoH, from what I gather, the beta is rather mediocre, but to tell you the truth, that isn't what I'm interested in. For all I care, it could have the most broken online in the history of history, but as long as the single player is a good and worthy experience, It will move up in the queue of my must-purchase games. I think if there is any game that we must avoid the hype for, it is this one. A part of an established, if lowering quality, franchise trying to muscle in on a crowded market is probably not going to take the world by storm. Either way, I'm going to wait for the reviews to start trickling out before making up my mind about this game.

I think that has something to do with the exclusive deal xbox and activision signed, the one they talked about at e3 where the xbox gets all the map packs a month early for the next 5 years. Also anyone who watched the Sony e3 saw their response was to get 'in bed' with EA. EA is giving ps3 shooter fans (Golf fans, Dead Space fans, etc) the special treatment that the bots have been getting from Activision, had the deals been flip flopped then there's no doubt that Black ops would be outdoing Medal of Honor on PS3, unless there are that many people that hatre Treyarch's CoD which I personally found nothing wrong with.

I played the COd4:MW on the PS3 I loved it but b4 MW2 came out I read stuff about, trailers I didn't buy it. There are a lot more of other games that deserved better sales then MW2 that game just sucks.

Modern warfare 1 is definitely better than Modern warfare 2. i could play modern warfare 1 all day by myself but i cant even play a straight hour without getting bored of mw2. i had so much practice on mw1 that i could snipe a moving enemy with a headshot from one side of the map to the other easily. with modern warfare 2 i let it go as i reached the level cap. i still go back once in a while if i have friends playing.

Well it does seem like you are being a bit of a fanboy against MW2, I liked the game a lot. CoD needs to hang up the coat now, but it's still a decent game. It's not like MoH brings anything new to the table. I just think it's neat that MoH is back again and looking pretty good.

If MW2 came out as MW1, and then MW1 as the sequel (in terms of MP) i don't think we'd get as many haters of the franchise (OK, so we also factor in the Antivision side).

I usually played MW2 only to stave off stress (and sometimes due to glitches and imbalanced perks it causes more stress).

I hope MOH sales a lot more then black ops on the PS3... even all platforms. after MW2 I hope COD fails with black ops and all the other 3 there working on. except all those Xbots there love COD even when it does suck. Why you think they like Halo and Gears of war so much?

Not buying black ops, and the likely hood of me buying MoH is small at best. With games like GT5, Dead space 2, Lbp2, and sorcery coming out, who has time for shooters.

Even if you do have time for shooters, wouldn't KZ3 be the best option.

when i heard activision was hiring a new CEO i was glad and thought finally a new direction for activision. but then the bottom paragraph said hes still going to work under kotick so i'll pass on activision games. they're a rental for me at the most.

I can guarantee that a good majority of the people saying CoD is dead, blah blah, will still play Black Ops when it comes out. You'd be lying if you said you were absolutely not going to touch that game at least once. I'm not even remotely excited for CoD anymore, but I'm still going to play it.

Well Ben, as a gamer I will play it. Probably wont buy it. Not being excited doesn't remove the ability I have to play a game. I'm just not hyped for it.

I would assume that "MOST" people ranting and raving that they are not going to play it are going to play it because it's always awesome to hate on something when it gains popularity. Also as was stated many times, CoD has a huge association with the Xbox brand, and most users on here have some personal vendetta against Microsoft.

You're right, there is no law that states every gamer must buy every CoD, which is why I said that most will play it.

Well, you're right that it's always hip to hate on the popular games, but I speak from experience when I say that most all of the PSXE readers who say they won't play Black Ops REALLY won't play it. Trust me on that.

As a gamer, I want to play everything deemed to be great, which is why I'll definitely want to play Black Ops if "great" is the common consensus. I just found it odd the way you phrased it before; it almost sounded as if you didn't care about it at all and yet, you were still going to play it for some unknown reason. ;)

Well I can say for sure that you are making a pretty broad statement by knowing that these majority who come here will not play this game. I mean unless of course these people are your outside buddies. It almost comes off as a bit of a god complex to your webpage.
As far as what will be deemed as great and what wont. Black Ops will definitely get high marks. It's Call of Duty. Also it's a matter of opinion what will be great to you or I. I can't say for sure whether or not I will enjoy Black Ops until I play it. However I can say in my opinion that the franchise is a bit stale, and there isn't much to be excited about. Same goes for a good portion of shooters. They have over-saturated the market. You've played one you've pretty much played them all, is pretty much the theme here.

Yeah, given the only CoD I've played is W@W, for about an hour and a half and found nothing at all to interest me, I can guaran-damn-tee that I'm not going to be playing Black Ops, regardless of the review scores. Also, I flat-out refuse to give Activision any of my money.

Well I can honestly say I've gotten my feel of modern shooters. MW and MW2 is enough. Despite how much I hate despise Activision's frigid tactics I understand that the games they output are enjoyable however. Now I won't be purchasing anymore of the MW games but Black Ops looks pretty good. I won't let my personal feelings get in the way of a possibly highly enjoyable experience. It just seems silly. For all we know some Sony devs could secretly be complete a**holes, if it were true it wouldn't stop me from purchasing their games.

The thing about Black Ops is that its getting hyped with little to no gameplay to justify it. At first I was interested,but as the weeks rolled on it dawned on me its happining all over again. Just like with MW2. After that hit me,I realized I almost was sucker punched. >.<

Well, the only reason I'm getting MoH is purely for the remastered Frontlines...and as for Black Ops...I'm boycotting it completely. I loved CoD4:MW, but the last two CoD's have been awful in my opinion, so I don't see why I should get this one. However, I am interested in reading the reviews to it to see if it sticks to historical facts about Vietnam, or if they effectively change history...

I just love the hate fo0r anything COD round here. It gives me my daily laugh!

I've always like the MOH series far better than COD, but MW created a fantastic MP game. Still not on par with Socom 2, but damn good none the less. I think thats the problem they got carried away with the MP. Still MW2 was good, and regardless what anyone says about how short the campaign was, some of the best action sequences I've played took place in the MW2 campaign. I just replayed it the other day and still got a sense of "that was pretty bad ass" a few times. Again too bad IW thought it'd be better to make a game based around the mp!

It's not necessarily that people hate CoD around here, it's that people hate what it's become. I've owned every CoD game besides finest hour, Call of Duty 4 was my first PS3 game, and I honestly have to say, that MW2 was a huge downgrade from the first, there were perks that shouldn't have existed, they got rid of recoil, and don't even get me started on the glitches and imbalances. Even after all that though, I am still considering black ops, because from what I've heard, it seems to be what I wanted MW2 to be(Definitely not a D1P though)

Side Note: MAG is my favorite FPS of all time, I have no doubt that I'll be playing until the servers shut down for good, and I recommend it to all who want a good alternative to CoD.
