Apache: Air Assault Taking Flight Soon

Flight games are few and far between these days but do you know what's even rarer? Flight games featuring helicopters.

Today, Activision Publishing has announced that Apache: Air Assault will launch this fall for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. In development at Gaijin Entertainment, they're calling this a "modern combat flight simulation game" where players will take control of a variety of lethal Apache attack helicopters. Your mission is to thwart terrorist attacks by utilizing the "cutting-edge military weaponry" you will have at your disposal, and you'll be tested continually throughout 16 multi-stage missions. You'll perform both air and ground strike operations off the coast of Africa, visit the treacherous mountains of the Middle East, and brave the steamy jungles of Central America, and each environment is faithfully recreated via "high resolution map data from real-world satellite photography." Said David Oxford of Activision:

"No games on next-gen consoles have been dedicated to helicopter combat simulation, but that is about to change this fall. Apache: Air Assault offers fun for diehard military enthusiasts and flight sim fans as well as gamers who just want to blow stuff up."

So although they're going for authenticity and realism, players can tailor the game to their tastes. If simulation isn't really you thing, you can simply select Arcade Mode for more accessible controls; the Realistic Mode will definitely take some practice and precision. There's a local Co-op Campaign Mode along with online competitive multiplayer featuring Team Deathmatch, Ground Attack, Capture the LZ and Ground Strike. We'll be on the lookout for some early footage, too.

Consider this game purchased for sure.

I never even heard of this title, thanks Ben!!

EDIT - I sure hope co-op has one player as the pilot, and the other as the gunner. That would be awesome!!

"Fight games are few and far between these days but do you know what's even rarer? Flight games featuring helicopters."

Aero Elite Combat Academy?

"How many flight games featuring helicopters can you name? Well, there's at least one. Apache: Air Assault will take to the skies some time this fall."

Aero Elite Combat Academy, again?

If anything I would ay Aero Elite beat every game out there given the fact you get fly more just than just a AH-64 Longbow, but also a AH-1S Cobra and OH-6D. What's even better is the fact you customize the arms/ordnance to your liking

Yeah, you're a genius. Because everyone has heard of that game, and of course, it completely invalidates the point that helicopter games are rare.

...one of these days, you're going to have to accept that you're not superior to every other poster on PSXE.

yes, because everyone with a PS3 has heard of and bought that game, release in 2003, for the PS2. A game that, incidentally, features a top down view of the nose of a jet fighter on it's cover. A game so stellar it managed to score a mighty 64 at Metacritic.

What relevance does a PS2 title from 2003 that achieved mixed reviews have in a discussion about flight sim games that include helicopters, 7 years later, running on completely different console hardware?

Dude, come on, this is about one step away from trolling.

air cavalry for the SNES? lol...

but yea, there's hardly any helicopter simulators out there... lots of games feature the helicopter like the GTA series but, none are strictly just helicopter simulators...

i would be more interested in this if it were a PSN title but, i am not going to pay full price for a helicopter simulator...

Hmmm...a helicopter flight/combat sim? OK, I might be interested in this. I used to adore playing the ancient F117 stealth fighter game on the PC many moons ago. I could be up for this as long as it doesn't requires a doctorate in flight dynamics to master.

This is mileading because there in only 1 verson of the Apache AH-64D Longbow in production. Any other versions are merely export versions built under licence.

Aw crap, why does anti-vision's name got to be on this one, especially when it would have been one of my few d1p's otherwise????

I'm still definitely buying this one, but only a used copy now.

I think there's a good reason as to why there are so few of these games. I have nothing against them, but it really does cater to a small market compared to other genre's.

Also with it only being a flight sim, they tend to be short, with very little to them other than flying the chopper over and over.

Now I know that's what some ppl want and that's fine, I'm just pointing out that these types of games don't sell all that well and most ppl who do buy them, at least wait for a price drop.

With all that in mind, it's still nice to see some variety, too bad it's coming from craptivision tho. I'd file this one under, wait and see with skepticism.

It sounds so good too. I like the look of the Apache. I guess my original reaction was harsh but devs gotta look for a more appealing publisher.

Great to see more flight games getting happening. It's always surprised me how few people get into flight sims, when car sims get so much attention (I find flying more exciting than driving, although both are good). Thanks heaps for the info Ben - I _loved_ IL2-BoP (also developed by Gaijin), this be great news :).

sweet, we dont have any where near enough flight combat games!
though, just one thing i request.
PLEASE! NO FREAKING BABYSITTING MISSIONS!!!!!!!!!!!
thats one thing that really pissed me off with HAWX, all you do is protect ground troupes its so freaking annoying!!!!!!!!!

i play a flight combat game, to blow sh*t out of the sky, not to have to constantly fly above tanks and continuously drop bombs on them.
flying around in circles dropping bombs = tedious and extremely frustrating!
flying around blowing suckers out of the sky = fun!

Some people might enjoy that challenge, games need to cater to the whole audience, not just one or two gamers...

what does having to babysit a tank for every single freaking mission of the game have to do with challenging?
making a game challenging does not mean it has to be so freaking infuriating!
they could throw 100 fighter jets at you at one given time, that would make it challenging.
having to protect a tank from the sky, forcing me to fly above drop bombs, turn around fly back drop bombs rinse and repeat 100 times is not challenging, its a pain in the a$$!
