EA Sports Announces A "Darker, Grittier" Fight Night

The Fight Night franchise has always claimed to boast boxing simulators and while that philosophy hasn't changed, EA now wants to focus on the grittier side of the sport.

Enter Fight Night Champion, recently announced by EA Sports and intended for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. EA's Andrew Wilson has guaranteed fans a look at the dark side of boxing; i.e., a "grittier and darker game" with action that "truly conveys the brutality of the sport." The first screenshot is right here; it depicts champ Manny Pacquiao with a swollen eye and a fair amount of blood. The developers will offer fans a "refined physics-based animation system" and a new "Full Spectrum Punch Control" mechanic. And while we all know the game will boast an online mode of some kind, EA Sports only spoke about the new direction for the franchise and the single-player campaign. Currently in the works by EA Canada - the same team that gave us Fight Night Round 4 - this new title won't be ready until next year, but it's bound to garner plenty of attention in 2010. The sport in question may have suffered a big drop in popularity over the years but EA's boxing video games have done quite well.

...maybe because this is one of the few sports that seems a lot more fun to play in a virtual environment.

I saw this, earlier, and the mention of pugil sticks got my attention. That would be awesome.

"Full Spectrum Punch Control," does that mean the player is going to be punching with the thumbstick?

probably, which means, I'll pass. I'd rather get the fighting game that is being made for move.

Most likely but then they'll have the alternate button choice so that spaz kids can have their fun. Using the sticks for fighting is a lot of fun. Better than just pushing a button.

EA had a patch put in for FNR4 to allow button combos because of so many kids whining about how much they sucked. The problem was that now all of the button mashers had a fighting chance against the better players who learned that using the sticks was an awesome feature.

I just don't understand the thought process behind boxing. It's just so damn pointless.

It's about timing, rhythm, mind games, anticipation, feigning, baiting, countering, pressure points, conditioning, posture, hand speed, head movement, foot movement, self-study, study of your opponent, it's so many things.

To the untrained eye, it's just a couple of men throwing their hands at each other. To the one that understands, it's just as much a science as it is a sport and a skill. If you want to know how to appreciate the skill, go in the ring with safety gear against a person of similar stature and build as yourself, but who also has a year or so of training. You'll be amazed.

The thought process of boxing is simple. Use hand-orientated technique to knock/fatigue your opponent out with out the use of submissive holding, below the waist handicap-work or grappling to lay on top of one another.

Fact is, I'll never enjoy MMA as much as I enjoy a well balanced boxing match. It's more of what I want - fists to abdomens and faces - and there's always plenty of it.

The only reason I personally think boxing has been driven so underground is due to the commercialized rules with challengers. When the sport takes it upon itself to pay both boxers a set amount of money, despite winning or losing, a hungry boxer-driven urge to win is lost.

Regardless, Boxing classics are always a win-win for more! Back when almost all the punch-drunk men that flogged the sport wore their pride through someones temple.

Fight Night 4's demo caused me to get so hectic with my punch combo's that I ripped the rubber thumb grip 1/2 way off of my right stick.

So now, every time I use my controller, I curse FN cause my grip keeps reminding me of it, as it flops around.

And I haven't bought the game yet because I figured my controller would've needed a standing 8-count way before before the final bell was rung.

Other than that, I thought the demo was cool.

I didn't like the last 2, seemed way to complicated just to punch someone, a jab seemed like putting in a finisher code from mortal kombat.

I don't like the idea of punching with the analogs either, so no thanks, I'll stick to move boxing games if I want to box at all.

Well I for one will definitely will check it out. I don't think the recent games were all that hard to play. And actually quite fun when you know what your doing. Although fighting online was too frustrating to me.

I guess i'm the only one that loved fnr4. i had r3 but didnt like it. but i love boxing and i thought r4 was tremendous. at first learning to use the stick was somewhat daunting, but once i got the movement it was music. i still play it regularly. hopefully this one will have mayweather and a few more of the 140 lb stars (alexander, bradley, kahn, maidana). More 168 stars (ward, abraham, froch, kessler, dirrell, bute). And maybe a spot for the late Edwin Valero. I for one can't wait. bring it on!!!

as a boxing fan i can't wait i loved Fight Night Round 4. i liked useing the control sticks after i got used to them. its just like the skate franchies (sorry bad spelling) when it frist came out people were b*tching about the joy stick useage and said skate would not last. But look at skate now there up to skate 3 and i love useing the sticks now over tony hawks button masher games.

This sounds really interesting, i'm a big fan of the series and the darker, grittier look seems awesome. FNR4 wasn't as detailed when it came to bruises and cuts etc. Hope they improve the movement though, when moving it seems like monkeys are chasing eachother.
Using the stick takes getting used to, but I have come to love it.

It's highly unfortunate that Fight Night at this level wasn't around when Tyson was king of boxing.

People actually cared (myself included) about boxing alot more. Now it's all about the MMA craze.

My favorite thing about fight night:

Putting the computer on easy and setting the rounds to 12 and beating the hell out of them, but not quite knocking them out to damage their face as much as possible before knocking them out in the last round with 10 seconds left.

Sadistic right? Get over it...

Boxing to me was much better back in Tyson's days.Thats the case because MMA didn't have its hooks set into prime time.MMA is as good as it gets as far as one on one combat, they dont get the bank for a single fight like a boxer would though.So..FN is a good game so i will check this new installment out like Ive done the rest.

With each installment they've added something new and made the game better. Using the analog sticks to punch is what makes Fight Night what it is and separates it from any other boxing game. Part 1 was revolutionary. Part 2 saw the addition of haymakers which became repetitive and the only punches thrown..Part 3 toned down the haymakers and you paid for them if you missed. But included special haymakers which seemed cheap. Round 4 was more about changing the physics and made blocking more realistic but too easy.

I hope they don't change the control layout too much with the analogs..They are fine how they are...using the buttons are for those too lazy to learn how to play the game how it was meant to be played.
