Digital Extremes Cranking On Sequel To The Darkness?

It came out over three years ago, but it remains one of our favorite games of the generation.

Ever since, we've been scrounging about for any news of a sequel. For a while, it just didn't appear to be a possibility, but industry sleuth Superannuation has found an encouraging piece of information. It's the CV for a Texture Artist/Environment and Prop Artist for Digital Extremes; his name is Emmanuel Pappas and he has worked at EA Canada (FIFA) and Radical Entertainment (Prototype) in the past. He's been at Digital Extremes since January of 2009 and it seems he's working on three titles: "JarFly," one "Undisclosed Title," and yes, "Darkness 2." While it's true that the original was developed by Starbreeze, that studio has already said that a sequel would likely be created by another team. Although we've waited quite a while already, we'll definitely be interested to hear about a sequel to a game that may have been under-appreciated. It would probably appear dated now but even so, you might want to rent it if you like atmospheric FPSs with big twists.

For a frame of reference, The Darkness might be compared to Singularity as they're both FPSs at their core, but they also have a very unique mechanic or element that makes the experience feel quite fresh.

There we go. I loved the first one. It was an interesting style of a game, although at parts it felt slow. That's all I think they would need to change.

It wasn't much of a popular game really. Although it was just kinda fun and unique. You should definitely look into getting it. By now I'm sure it's only $15 or less.

It was one of the first games to come out for the PS3. I remember reading about it way back in 2005 before the ps3 even launched. Still haven't played it, maybe its time to pick it up on the cheap. The reviews were pretty good.

Picked up the game for my 360 some time ago. I think it was under $10. Never got around to playing it. Hell, I've only ever used my 360 for Lost Odyssey. Maybe I should fire up the old beast to see if The Darkness is any good.

The Darkness is good, IMO.

And yeah, I had hella fun with Lost Odyssey. If they ever did a sequel - and they kept it TURN-BASED - I'd be first in line to get it.

i saw lost odyssey at gamestop, was around 27 bucks which was the regular used price, then it had a 50% off sticker on it. i was about to pay for it but i remembered that my brother sold his 360. only rpg i played on the 360 was infinite undiscovery, game was pretty good. cost me 10 bucks at a hollywood video but definitely worth more than i paid.

Thanks for the link, I didn't remember this game until I went to the link and saw the pic. I played the demo for the first one and hated everything about it. Granted I'm not huge on fps, but I really couldn't stand this one.

Yeah but I still didn't recognize it. I looked at the picture from the link and then went to the review and still didn't remember.

When I went to Biker's link tho it immediately had a pic of the cover of the game and that just clicked in my head. Not sure why.

Cool, never noticed The Darkness but if the second one turns out to be decent I might give it a try, in one of those buy two used get one free deals. Doubt it will stand up to some of the other shooters coming out this year though

The Darkness was one of the first few games I tried out on PS3 and I enjoyed it quite a bit. The relationship between Jackie and his girlfriend was very well developed and the story was told in a smooth, interesting way. What seems like a million years ago I heard there were talks of a sequel being made, but I had lost hope after all this time.

I really hope they do it!

Starbreeze developed the first Darkness. Who also made the Chronicles of Riddick games. I think Digital Extremes is a lesser developer IMO. I still have the first (I mean come on, you can eat people's hearts out!) But I need to see alot more of this game to make a purchase.

I remember a good friend of mine going on and on and on about how good The Darkness was. I'd completely forgotten about it. If and when a sequel is confirmed, I think I'll go look for the first. I know, I really should just get it ASAP, but I'm more than a little bit flooded right now.

I liked it at first, but got it got old ridiculously quick. Played through about 4 hours of it and traded it in. I remember being mesmerized with how you could watch tv programs on in-game tv's. I thought "look! They have tv in a video game! We've come so far from the ps2!" Now its all so common.

I won't be picking it back up though. Would definitely feel dated compared to the games now.

I got this game for $9 recently and played it for four hours. Enjoyed it but got bored. Traded it back for $2.

I don't think I've got the time to play old games anymore since there is so much new quality out there.

It was cool though thinking you could watch a whole "To Kill a Mockingbird" on the TV but better in theory than in practice.

The shooting bits were a bit old fashioned. PS3 has come a fair way since then!

for once ben i agree with ya, the darkness is one if this gens most under appreciated games, along with rainbow six vegas.
i really enjoyed the darkness, it had a slight stealth tactic to it, i really had fun roaming around taking out all the lights than scaring the sh*t out of people!
same with rainbow six, ive been a massive fan of the series since the start and vegas is probably the best!

I remember hearing the darkness was getting a sequel late last year, i was wondering about what happened to it.
same for rainbow six, i mean they said vegas 2 is the last of that arc the next one wont be set in vegas.
2 years later and we still have not heard boo about it!
thats a good thing though, because ubisoft love announcing games than showing us jack sh*t for years!
cough BG&E 2, i am alive, SPC and so on.
as long as there actually working on it, if not ill be so disappointed!

id love to see a sequel to swat 4 also, by far one of my favorite PC games!
thats one genre thats really lacking this gen, on the ps1 and 2 we had heaps of cop based games.
we had XII, we had true crime, we had max payne, we had the punisher and so on.
this gen the only cop based game we have had is stranglehold.
o, plus true crime the remake which is being made by the makers of MNR due out in november.
speaking of the punisher, i wish they would do a sequel to that!
and not the crap PSN title, that sucked absolute donkey balls!!!!!!
i mean a true proper sequel, to complement the original game.

Is Rainbow Six Vegas under-appreciated? I've read good things about it and my own experience with it was really good. Pretty sad when people don't appreciate a classic.

yeah it is it has not been given as much praise as it deserves.
i cant believe ubisoft have not announced the sequel yet, they have announced all the other tom clancy games just not rainbow six.
if there hanging up the belt and putting rainbow six to bed im going to be so disappointed!
its such a unique game, theres really no game like it.
would be a massive shame to see it go!

Neat! I actually enjoyed the first one. It wasn't anything spectacular as a FPS, but the atmosphere and story made it stand out to me.

Darkness was a really good game when the PS3 launched. There wasnt a lot of other choice at the time though. I did enjoy playing through it tho as the storyline was most compelling. I particularly enjoyed calling people up. (nice touch). May look dated now tho :( Hopefully the second one will be just as good.

The Darkness was my favorite "sleeper" game of 2007. I thought it was a great game with excellent values all around. I thought it had the best loading screens, where Jackie would confess his blues. I also loved using those telephone numbers to hear those crazy messages.

I'd be all over a sequel.
