PSXE Poll Update: Final Fantasy Must Make Some Changes

It almost doesn't matter what those "changes" should be; the majority of our readers believe that if Square-Enix doesn't give the franchise a boost in one way or another, the series is on its last legs.

Maybe they could re-introduce turn-based in a slick, modernized, original fashion, all the while keeping the role-playing elements that fans have always craved. Maybe they could once again progress forward from Final Fantasy XIII and give us something entirely new (which wouldn't be altogether unpleasant). I will always say that FFXIII is often unfairly persecuted against by the long-time fans and although I've been guilty of that in the past, I really do think it's a fantastically great game. It just isn't a great Final Fantasy. So the question is, what can Square-Enix do? What should they do? Company president Yoichi Wada has admitted he's not sure of the intended "direction" for the franchise, so maybe if enough fans step forward and offer a few suggestions... Hey, you never know. They might listen. Just don't forget that like 1 in every 2 PS3 owners in Japan bought FFXIII and most evidently loved it.

For this week, it's the whole Cole fiasco. Sucker Punch has revealed they're re-overhauling the hero and we wanna know what you think. Bear in mind that we're not really getting the old Cole back; we're merely getting a hero that "looks more like" the original Cole. So what do you think? Good enough? Or do they need to change the voice, too? Maybe such a poll will help out the devs.

Before FFXI, I could honestly say I liked all of them (except IX for some reason). Since XI however, I feel the series has massively been going downhill. Especially 13. 13 is not at all what I expect when I hear Final Fantasy. It's not necessarily a bad game, just not up to the standards expected from one of the best series of games out there.

EDIT: Also, as for the new poll. I could care less about looks for the most part, but the voice is truly what defined Cole in the first game. Without that, they could have straight copied his previous appearance and it still wouldn't help.

What should SE do??

Give us an HD upgrade of the PS2 FFs, that's what they need to do. Then not only 1 of 2 consumers will buy it, but 2 of 2 will buy it.

in terms of costumer satisfaction is so abysmal?? Is he blind or something?? Well, he may be blind, maybe he has to much M$ cash in front of him so that he cannot look further than his f*king nose. Oh god, M$ is causing the game industry to go downhill, and that is really pissing me off.

FF12 is only 4 years old, no need to update it yet. SE just need to pull their head of their ass and make an HD FF7. It will probably sell more copies than FF13. I know i'd be waiting in line to pick up my copy.

All they really have to do is go back to the glory days of the PS1 titles for Final Fantasy. If it ain't broke don't fix it ya know?

While I would prefer to have Old Cole back, that's probably too much to ask but I'm VERY glad that SP listened to the ire from the fans and are gonna fix him.

Before I start, note that I am not a FF fan nor have I ever beaten as game in the series. Okay, so everyone hates FF's new direction, but if they changed the title of FFXIII to ? with FF in it, would everyone except it as a good game? I mean personally, I have not played the game yet, but it seems the only reason people hate this game is because it doesn't play like the old ones. Ben says it's a good game, but he resents it for being a FF product without the core FF gameplay. So is this a good game in general and is it worth a purchase for a new comer or someone who doesn't have enough experience with the franchise to actually care about it?...don't feel like renting a long game.

As far as the whole cole thing goes, they need to change that 'sqeaky nerd trying to be rough' voice or just give him back is original voice. The new look is okay besides that Uncharted haircut. Fix the voice and haricut so I can take Cole serious in round 2.

Yes, it is a good game, but about %80 of what made previous Final Fantasy games great has been stripped out. That's the issue that fans have. It would be like Uncharted 3 having no guns, puzzles or climbing mechanics.

I can't say that many FF games don't give me the urge to replay them later on. I'v e replayed just about all of them, even X-2. I liked FF13, but i will never, ever replay it.

final fantasy crisis core was not exactly like the old ones and I loved it, but then again it still had FF feel to it, it still had FF elements.

FF13 is some game that square enix made and didn't want a new IP so they plugged the FF name on it. It has almost no similarity to any FF game. That's the problem.

He had a CT scan about a year ago, but all they found in there was a mini drive-in motel with a big sign that says, "VACANCY". It had a "NO" in front of it, but it was turned off.

I for one don't think that Wada will ever hear our cries, millions of fans have been screaming for FF7 HD remake since that cg trailer before the ps3 was even released and then he comes along and says he didn't know anyone wanted it done?

As for Cole, I watched the video and his voice is still incredibly annoying. He sounds like steve urkel trying to sound tough and gravelly. In the end it sounds like Bruce Willis with a terrible sinus infection, just awful.

am i the only person that actually enjoyed FF13. I absolutely loved it. The only critisim i had was maybe get to the open world exploring a little sooner and make it more than just about huntoring. other that keep it the same or just do a sequel to Final Fantasy 8 as we keep going on about 7 remakes but with the anime and other FF7 games i wanna explore more of the universe of FF8.

FF8 would be too difficult to do a sequel. You could do more about SeeD, or even about SeeD battling the sorceress in the future I suppose, but the ending to FF8 was pretty conclusive. The reason sequels to FF7 are so easy to do is because there's absolutely nothing conclusive about what happens at the end other than us knowing that 500 years later there is lots of greenery around.

Yeah...the last great final fantasy I played was ffX, and ffXII was good, but the beginning of a downward spiral for square enix.
I have no interest for the new FF MMORPG that's suppose to launch and as of right now, I don't intend of buying another damn square enix game. I know my $60 won't make much of a difference, but I'm sure as hell not going to support a company that takes all of my loyalty since ff6 and shuts me out in the cold after slapping me in the freaking face.

Really now...where would SE be without me and most of the other PSX who have been around since the beginning? Now its painfully obvious that Wada doesn't care about any of us Final Fantasy gamers of olde. He just ONLY worries about getting western gamers. I'd kill to get a decent JRPG man...(And I'd go on a killing spree to get a turn-based rpg.)

FF just needs to go back to its origonal roots, back to the PS1 days and start from there. maybe start with a remake of FF7.

I voted for the second Cole(the first change) because I like that appearance more.

However because he doesn't look like that at all in the first game, wouldn't make any sense to use the second Cole for the sequel.

I played FF:Crisis Core on the PSP for 25 hours and traded it, played FFXIII for 25 hours and traded it, downloaded FFVII for the PSP and played it for 4 hours and doubt I'll go back to it.

I think FF has passed me by so won't be buying any future games.

Demon's Souls has got me at the moment. Utterly fantastic game. I have Dragon Age: Origins on my shelf waiting to be played. I also loved Fallout3.

So I think western RPG's have the edge in my opinion. I doubt I would buy a remake of FFVII as it's never going to live up to the fans expectations.

There is no way that FF:VI can fail. The only way that can happen is if they change more than just the graphics. All us fans want is an HD overhaul in graphics (requiring them to rebuild the game from the ground up). If they change even a script of dialog then the game might fail. Seeing as how SE has been screwing everything else up, they just might try to do something that dumb.

The only thing I think they should change is that they should include a cutscene viewer.

My only issue with FF7 was the dialogue. The things Cloud said were often inconsistent with his character, and the rest of them really aren't very deep thinkers. It's like Star Wars... Amazing story with a very mediocre dialogue. (Which, by the way, often had typos and spelling errors... and not in a way that portrays how they might actually say it.)

I'm becoming additcted to Demon's Souls but for me Dragon Age was garbage. Not really a fan of western rpg's. I've heard Demon's Souls be referred to as a WRPG at times and also a JRPG at times.

true JRPG, traditional story, traditional gameplay, massive worlds to loose yourself in, heaps of side quests and collectibles to find.
i cant believe im saying this, but neir felt more like a traditional RPG than FFXIII did!
and maybe bring back the turn based mechanics, though that ones a bit of a gamble.
the old school will be kissing your feet for it!
but, well its not going to go down well with other, more up to date players.
but to them i say FF is a RPG, a strategy RPG not a action hack and slash game!

The guy from IGN was annoying at the sucker punch panel. I watched the whole interview and they said the same thing. People didn't like how he looked or how he sounded. I have faith in sucker punch so many of you seem to not have any faith in them. Really? Come on guys they are going to deliver a great game old cole or not!

Final Fantasy XIII was a brilliant game, One of the best Final Fantasys, No. But it was certainly a joy to playthrough. I'm glad the sotry was more character driven, i don't want to ever see a Final Fantasy like XII again. By that i mean i don't want to see another FF which focuses on a political war and gives us plank protagonists (Discounting Balthier, the reason i made it through the game.)

I have played most FF games and i definatly say it's around the middle, its not the standard of 6-10. But i had such a fun time playing through it it had many tributes to the series, mainly through the missions. I can see why people were upset, due to the lack of exploration. but i would rather that and have a nicely structured story with frequent events than XII's non existent plot, the part where you had to go up that temple in XII was just torture.

Yeah, 6's story is pretty incredibly written. In my video games as art essay I'm doing, I definitely have included a scene or two from FF6 as early signs of video games becoming artistic through it's storytelling and character development.

Also, I have a fantastic reference from a guy who has a PhD in philosophy who has written an incredible piece on the character Kefka and how his character is built entirely around the philosophy of the philosopher Kafka. VERY interesting stuff! It was a very literal and on-purpose piece of character development. Well thought out by whoever wrote the story to FF6. With that context, Kefka's personality makes perfect sense. He is not merely 'mad'.

I really don't care to much. Bought inFAMOUs but cannot push myself to make a start with it. Always new games get my attention, maybe after I finish Ninja Gaiden Sigma, but then again...Maybe something new gets my attention.

I couldn't bring myself to finish FFXIII but I might at some point in the future.

I don't wanna see the following in FFXV :
1) No towns
2) Lack of NPC interaction
3) Over-the-top linearity that made you felt like you're travelling in a straight line.

Without these FFXIII would have been one of the best FF.

Which got me thinking, if SE wanna appeal to the western audience, why the heck did they made FFXIII so damn linear when WRPG aren't linear at all.

I don't think they tried to make it similar to a WRPG. What I think is that they tried to make it similar to a shooter in some aspects. For example, a very linear path, hardly any NPC interaction, can only control one character at a time, game-over when party leader (your character) dies. I mean if you apply any of the above things to your typical shooter, it holds true.

How about this change- DON'T pander to the western audience. Be the FF that you always are. Western audiences are mainly ADD shooter morons like Xbots and don't know any better. and keep FF exclusive to Sony systems, where the fans truly appreciate it.

I wouldn't even mind if they made Final Fantasy into a straight action / adventure game, or a FPS for that matter - but for pete's sake, make it a halfway decent one. I'm just now regaining my interest in gaming after having it sucked right out of me by that last...thing...they did. Cripes, just remake FFVII like everyone is asking for. Even if it takes 10 years, it's not like they've got anything better to do in the meantime.

like i said, inherit everything from FF 7,8,9 and make this gen HD graphics, that's where the FF should go, only thing they need to upgrade is HD graphics from PS1/Ps2 era, keep everything else. this is the simple winning formula

I finally started playing XIII again and man is it slow. I'm 7 chapters in and it has been a very boring adventure so far. I'll finish it no matter what but man I sure do miss the old school stuff.

i want my godlike final fantasy characters back damn it! I didnt spend all that time level grinding just so i can withstand only 1 more attack from that giant turtle. seriously before level grinding it kills me with 1 attack while unprotected. maxed out it kills me in 2 unprotected. not to mention at a few times its gets 2 attacks off before i get to heal my main character, since if that prick dies its game over.

and dont tell me how to beat him, i know how. I farmed that damn adamantoise to max out.what happened to the float spell anyway? my characters are maxed on all roles and i can still get taken out by marked/hunt enemies sometimes pretty easily. I even beat some marks pretty fast but still no S ranking its retarded.

I personally like the fact that there are challenges no matter how strong you are, but you are right about the things like your main character dying or no float spell... Those things are damn annoying!!

As for the S rankings, keep at it. I platinum'd FFXIII, and it was really just a matter of exploitation. Once I found out that each paradigm featuring 3 of the same classes has a latent effect, things got easier...

for example: Tortoise (3 sentinals) latent effect is half damage taken. No spells necessary. 3 Commando's is double magic power (which sounds stupid... but it just doubles the effectiveness of Ruin which classifies as a magic spell. Which is why if you cast Death or One Man Army or the like, then switch to 3 Commando's while casting, the damage is doubled)

I did end up finishing XIII but I really did hate the "you must follow the path" but other then that i liked the battle system, took a minute to get the hang of but after that it was who worked out best in the group and in my opinion...it was lite, hope, fang...did some of the side stuff but i think i put... 60+hours in? either way what everyone is saying, they need a nice world map, towns, and i wouldnt mind the hack an slash but i do like my turn style. (tho im a KH fan) Also i agree that any RPG thats in the Final Fantasy series should be PS3 Exclusive. If it was EVER gonna get ported xbox need a blue-ray player for games which wont happen cause sony owns blue-ray. I mean its possible that eventually it could happen but not for some time.
