Who Wants PC Classics On The PSN?
The PlayStation Network is pretty well loaded with both new digital games and downloadable classics from the PS1 era. Developers are also on a serious retro kick lately; we've already seen many old-school titles come to life once more on our PS3s or PSPs. And with third-party studios very much in support of both the PSN and XBLA, might it be possible to see a section for old PC classics?
I imagine the idea presents both potential programming and licensing issues but one can still dream, can't he? I really don't care about PC gaming now but during the platform's heyday - the '90s, of course - there were more than a few memorable titles that I will play to this day. Heroes of Might and Magic remains one of my favorite franchises ever, and if I had more time, I'd be interested in starting new adventures in Diablo, Baldurs Gate, Icewindale, and others. Remember 1998? I mean, there are so many PC gems from past generations that could easily be delivered in downloadable form now - you can grab them digitally for your computer, even if it's not exactly legal - and it could prove to be immensely popular.
What PC games might you want to see on the PSN? What would you spend the time and money to download and play? Anything too recent and graphic-intensive is probably out of the question but that's okay; I don't really want any of that, anyway. Who might like the old-fashioned thrill of Heretic? Or the original Fallout? We've got Dreamcast games headed our way and as time goes on, don't rule out the entire PS2 library. Who knows what the future holds? But right now, if we're going to be faithful to all the classics from the PlayStation era, maybe we should think outside the box. Maybe we should grab us some classic PC fun...and I want Trophies, too.

So I didn't really get into gaming until after I got married and started buying them myself. I always liked video games, I just rarely got the chance to play them.

Or hell, give me Ultima 7 and Ultima 7 Serpent Isle. Actually... remake them in HD will you? Would there be a trophy for figuring out how to rob that bank?

More accurately, it CAN, but almost no devs use it.
If the PC games come with original controls (M&K) rather than some workaround version poorly mapped to a DS3, then I say the idea has merit.
Understand, I'm no devotee of PC games or of M&K controls, but if the games are built for that control scheme, I don't see why the devs don't just leave the game as is when they port it.
There should be tons of RTS games ported to PS3 by now, but instead we get bastardized versions that don't work right because the 360 version can't use M&K.
That annoys me on principle.

Heroes of Might and Magic would be downloaded asap, then some really old school titles like Rocket Jockeys, maybe some Axis and Allies, certainly a few other RTS games (seriously lacking on the PS3) maybe even Wolfenstein and some other old shooters as well. CoD classic I played on Computer many a time and that's available on the PSN. Beat that game on veteran with a touch-pad on a laptop once O_o* crazy I know

all the duke nukem games.
far cry.
prey.
crysis, but thats never going to happen the ps3 cant handle that id go up in nuclear blue flames!
but i would much rather have more ps1 classics, i spent today rummaging through my old ps1 classics box and found point blank.
by far the BEST! arcade shooter ever released!
10 times better than time crisis!
or even better give us some PS2 games on there, though id much rather them re released in collections ala the GOW and sly cooper collection!

Doom 1 & 2 sure, but Doom 3 is hardly a classic like the original Doom, it's far too contemporary to be considered in that league. Besides I';m pretty sure Ben mentioned the 90's and unless your corner of Oz exists in a weird time warp, Doom 3 arrived in 2004. Personally though I thought that the visual presentation of Doom 3, although obviously technically superior to Doom 1 & 2, was inferior as a game when compared with Doom 1 & 2.
You know, judging by the list of games you are a PC based shooter fan, so my question to you is, why bother with a console anyway? Also, why didn't you list Quake?

crysis 2 is nothing like the original crysis.
crytek have had to cut allot of features that were in crysis which wont be in crysis 2, for example in crysis if you stir up a sh*storm enemies start shooting you, if you leave than come back enemies will remember what you did.
in crysis 2 they will not.
plus crysis 2 is much more open spaced, where crysis was linear, not to mention the lush jungles are gone for the good old gray, gray, gray pate we all love!

been long time out of this site, humm nothing's changed ... good! ;)
well i saw heretic in your article & jumped happily.
I re-purchased the whole heretic/hexen pack from the steamy site & i have the Doomsday project so got to play heretic with a quake II engine in windows XP. The old version do work in DOS & DOSBox. I agree would be hard on newer machines with VISTA or Seven though ...
I'm a total fan of Diablo & have all versions & waiting for number III to be out.
now having these games on my PS3 would be tempting, but i don't feel they are meant for, i'd rather wish for more PS1 & PS2 games to be ported & in HD siouplé:P
Now if you think of remakes, make them available on both PC & PS3 & i'll be more than happy ...
an HD version of heretic, doom & Diablo ... i can only be dreaming.
If they are to be released with the original GFX i don't really want.
we can still wish for ...
cheers!

Heroes of Might and Magic III
