ModNation Patch Speeds Things Up

The developers had promised a patch to deal with the long loading times in ModNation Racers and now, that update is here.

So when you pop in the game again, be sure to download the patch. Not only will it shorten those extra long loading times but it will also take care of a few other technical issues, and even adds a new casual difficulty setting for newcomers. The news is that this patch is available now, but it does depend on the DNS/PS3 refresh rate; you might have to wait a bit before it's there. But anyway, at least the designers heard the complaints and did something about it; those loading times could get awfully irksome. As is, the game is pretty darn good: it's essentially LittleBigPlanet in the kart-racing world, with plenty of player customization and the ability to create an entire track in mere minutes. All it takes is a wee bit of creativity and imagination; it's clearly designed to cater to fans of Media Molecule's revolutionary platformer.  Are you one of them?

The whole ModNation experience should be more streamlined now, so no making a sandwich while you wait for a race to load.

Hope the casual difficulty is for SP because unlocking every last thing is bloody hard!

I'm with you. This is definitely not Mario Kart level AI. The later races get pretty hairy. Love the game though. Definitely love the patch to speed it up. I could usually only get 2 or 3 races in before I got tired of waiting on load screens.

Damn, I didn't think the "loading" issue was such a problem... how long did it typically take to load the game between races?

Q!

So far I can't really see to much difference in the new casual mode. Still get my ass kicked a lot of times when I get into first place and then have 8 or 9 opponents pass me. Oh well guess I'll just have to keep practicing.

The load times are noticeably better though.

yeah I never had a problem getting first, but trying to get first and take out a specific character at a specific place with a specific weapon was just ridiculous.

@ Qubex Load times were between 1-4 minutes, but the in game music made up for that I think. That or I just really like music. Nice to hear about a patch for the frustrated ones though.

1-4 minutes? Holy cow, I never waited that long in ModNation. 4 minutes? I think you forgot your sarcasm tags.

It was pretty painful though. I always used the initial start-up load time to use the washroom or something. Load times were more realistically around the 45-60 second mark. Which is really long when you're staring at a little circle going around in a loop.

Compare that to most game's approximately 10 second load time, and that's a lot. Even Final Fantasy XIII when you load a saved game takes only 20-25 seconds, and THAT felt long.

thanks underdog for pointing that out!

1-4 min lol thats outta control. I NEVER had any length of load times anywhere near that. Its cus of those comments that people have stayed away from this amazing game (even if thats a dumb reason not to buy it).

I personally would say the load times for me were between 15-45 seconds.

Everyone likes to correct someone who's only trying to help. It felt like much longer than 45 seconds to me, maybe because I was playing online co op, or the in game music was dragging the load time down, either way would you have even bothered to answer the question if it didnt give you a hard on to correct someone?

Absolutely. If someone has a question, and I have an answer or input, I will likely lend my knowledge. That doesn't mean I'm always right, but I'll do my best to help. As for correcting you, that wasn't the point of my input, sorry.

Its an awesome kart racing game, with the added bonus of your imagination!

Apparently somebody got to busy to review it, but it is totally worth the purchase.

Especially if you enjoy the play/create/share and even more so if ya like an amazingly well done kart racer.

I really want to purchase ModNation Racer. I think creating your own player is a cool feature but I'd rather see more and more licensed characters. If they put out more Sony mascots I'd be sold. Then again, I assume that the only Sony character on the track would be your own. Which sucks, because it be nice to see other known characters racing with you too.

This is great news, the load times never bothered me, but I have friends that come over and their wives only give them so much time to play before they have to leave and so every second seems to count to them.

i was so disappointed with this, its this years resi 5!
i was so excited for this, i got into the beta last year and was instantly hooked i was so excited for it than was shot down so fast!
it feels rushed, unfinished and extremley unsorted!
you need boost to do everything and you never have enough of it!
its like giving me 5 bucks to pay the monthly bills, top up the car and do the weekly shop!
i thought MNR was going to be the kart racer of the generation, i really thought it was going to give mario kart a run for its money but even freaking sega all stars racing is better than this!
i was epxpecting MNR to be my facorite game of the year, funny how that ended!
i thought MNR would be 1st, split second being 2nd and blur be third but its the other way around, blur is first split second is still 2nd and MNR is third.
i thought MNR was going to be better than split second, blur, mario kart, sega all stars racing and blur put together but sadly its not even better than the worse of those 5!
even joe danger, a lonely downloadable title is better than mod nation racers!
when a downloadable game ends up being better than a full priced retail game, thats when you know your really in trouble!
disappointment of the year!
no, scratch that, disappointment of the century!

You just aren't any good at playing it. I always have a good supply of boost. And there's 4 different ways of obtaining it. /rolls eyes/

You see blankboy, that's the kind of stuff I've been reading en mass. That, and the car loving, GT5 adoring, PlayStation exclusive PSXE didn't take the time to review it.

Doesn't instill any confidence in the product that's for sure. Although I DO value bigrailer19 and Underdog15's comments so it can't be ALL bad.

Well, Alienage, it definitely isn't for everyone. However, as far as kart racers are concerned, it's pretty fun. And if you get sick of the tracks, you just download someone else's. There are lots of good one's out there.

its not pretty fun its a pain in the A$$
how is getting blown up every 2 minutes because you used all your boost charging a opponent, or using it to speed past a enemy?
its so annoying, you cant have one resource to fuel so many uses.
might aswell use it as petrol, engine coolest, and brake fluid while there at it!

not to mention the AI is cheap, and has to cheat to win.
im literally tail gating a enemy, touching his a$$ i fire a missile and he blocks it with his shield.
WTF?
not even flash himself could react that quickly!

MNR is ridiculously hard!
you think BLUR or split second is hard you have no freaking idea!
theres a reason why they added the casual mode, something that should of been there in the first place!

BLUR is by far the best of the 3, its so addictive and easy in comparison to MNR.
split second is allot of fun, but gets boring after a while because all races are the same.
BLUR is much more fast paced, it really gets the pulse racing!

MNR is not hard. I've already completed all challenges and everything in the career mode, and I'm only a couple trophies away from a platinum... the kind of trophies that come with time.

And like I said, you just aren't good at it. I might get blown up once if at all when I play online. You only use up charge sideswiping an enemy if you miss. You actually gain more than you use if it's successful. And if you aren't drafting, drifting, and performing tricks at every chance you get, you will run out quickly. Getting charge is simple.

Basically, you're bashing it because you haven't been able to figure it out. Even my wife, who NEVER plays games, loves this title... I bet she could whip your butt anyday... And it sounds like she'd explode you into a million pieces regularly and into a rage filled frustration.

THINK about it man... If you pass 3 sections of weapon's bubbles... there's a VERY good chance someone has a FULLY CHARGED ATTACK... (It only takes 3!!) get ready to defend!! Also, EVERY ATTACK CAN BE BLOCKED. Some are just trickier than others.

I welcomed this game as a good challenge. It was actually difficult, unlike other kart racers. I felt a tremendous amount of accomplishment having completed the career and all of it's challenges. I have everything unlocked now.

But seriously... there is no excuse for getting blown up more than an average of once per lap. The AI is smart. It will save it's big attacks for the end. And if you're so close behind someone that you're touching him?? SIDE SWIPE THE FRIGGER!!!! Don't waste an uncharged attack that's easy to block... hot damN!

Not me. It's loading much faster for me now. The loading when you first start up the game doesn't seem too much faster, but it's definitely a lot faster in game between races, entering the modspot, etc.
