Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon To Be Among The Classics

Well, we still want to see the Parasite Eve games on the PSN, but in the meantime, Square-Enix has made another announcement.

According to Examiner.com, publisher boss Shinji Hashimoto, who frequently likes to unveil such things at the Japanese Square-Enix Members Twitter page, has confirmed one more PS1 classic for the Network. It's Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon, which actually didn't release in North America; only the sequel made it to US shores. It's a Final Fantasy world where your traditional feathery companion is in the limelight, and you fight your way through scores of dungeons and rampaging enemies. It's actually an RPG as it holds many of the same elements found in Final Fantasy quests on the original PlayStation, so it might really be worth your time. Me, despite having played a good 40 RPGs on the PS1, will have to admit that neither Chocobo title was among them. Perhaps I made a mistake (I also regret missing Saga Frontier 2 and Breath of Fire IV) but soon, I'll be able to remedy that, right?

We don't know exactly when Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon will be on the PSN, but we shouldn't have long to wait. Perhaps next month...?

I don't think the UK got this one either, if so i've never heard of it before. But in all honesty it does not look that compelling.

I played Chocobo's Dungeon 2. Actually, I still own a copy! it was tremendous fun, but if you're looking for a typical deep Final Fantasy story, this isn't it. It has Final Fantasy themes, obviously, but it's a very child-like level of writing.

Still, the battle system is fun. It's definitely a classic PS1 experience.

Yeah, it's kinda unique. It's turn based, but every space/step you take in the dungeon counts as an action. So if you move cautiously, you should never be ambushed. No random encounters, either. Dungeons have maps, traps, treasures, all that good stuff! You have to maintain your weapons and armor (they break eventually if you don't repair them, and are sometimes even cursed!!).

It's also nice, because if smart, you can use the surroundings to your advantage. Monsters can be hurt by traps too, and if there's too many enemies, you can back yourself into a narrow corridor so they can't all get at you at once! There's a very welcome amount of strategy.

EDIT: If you ever get a copy of Chocobo Racing, there's a demo of Chocobo Dungeon 2 on it at the main menu.

I rented this game but never finished it which caused me to get azure dreams. For some reason these turn-based dungeon crawlers strike a chord with me

This actually looks a LOT like the Pokemon games on the Game Boy/DS. For those who have played this, is this somewhat similar to those games? I love the Pokemon games so if this plays the same, it'll be a Day 1 buy for me.

It's not really the same. There aren't random encounters. However, it is turn-based. It's hard to explain, but every movement is an action. But you can move as quickly as you like. I guess if I had to explain it, it's turn-based pseudo-real-time. I dunno... Hard to explain. You'd understand the moment you see it though.

Wow, yeah... that's probably as hard to understand as it was to explain. LOL. Thanks, though. Maybe I'll just wait to see if this shows up on PS+, just in case it's not my cup of tea.

So if they're putting this online, why don't we have Xenogears yet?
