Grand Theft Auto V Should Be In...

Being a big fan of the franchise, I've been thinking about the future of GTA. Specifically, where exactly we'll be running amok in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto V, which hasn't been unveiled as of yet.

If we look back at the history of the series since GTAIII (when it broke through into elite territory), we see the almost entirely fictional metropolis of Liberty City, a virtual if not wholly faithful recreation of Miami in Vice City, the major cities and vast amount of land out in California (i.e., Los Angeles, San Francisco) in San Andreas, and the surprisingly realistic boroughs of New York City in GTAIV. So I say it's time to go global. I say we need to take advantage of one of the coolest cities in the world, one that is teeming with life, has a very distinct flair, and can go toe-to-toe with any other city in regards to crime, debauchery and fine living from ill-gotten gains...or so I've heard.

That city is Tokyo. Now, the Japanese aren't big fans of GTA - at least, not in comparison to the West - but we could really bring two cultures together in GTAV. In GTAIV, we had Russian immigrants getting their feet wet in NYC; in GTAV, how's about we have some American crime aficionados indulging in absolutely everything Tokyo has to offer? In some ways, I'm picturing a cross between Yakuza and GTA but because we don't want to alienate the Western fanbase, it's probably crucial that we maintain an American focus (i.e., on the characters). It just seems as if the possibilities in Japan's capital are limitless and if Rockstar wanted to expand beyond the boundaries of the city (as they did in San Andreas), they could even include some of the smaller towns and villages outside Tokyo.

Other potentially great cities could be London, Hong Kong, Buenos Aires, Paris, or even Sydney. I just like the idea of GTA finally breaking the boundaries of the US and setting down roots in a whole new country. Of course, I still want GTA to be GTA...don't change that, Rockstar.

Imagine GTA V In Mexico! Expands through Tijuana & Arizona! I mean isn't DRUGS GUNS & CASH what we want? I mean look at Tijuana you have both Border Patrol & Drug Dealers. I would love to kill Border Patrol!!!! In GTA OFF COURSE...
You can cross the border & risk your life. Then you go to Arizona, LAS VEGAS! & LOS ANGELES CALI should be included too. Man Ooh man, what a dream!

That is right, there are no wold animals walking freely in the streets. Many people think that is the case before they get to see the place... or live long enough to see the place.

From a violence perspective, Johannesburg work well in a GTA game; considering it is one of the most violent and crime ridden cities in the world... central old Johannesburg that is.

Mexico or Bogota would also be pretty good...

LOL no I didn't think their were wild animals in Johannesburg. I was saying that in GTA san andreas you could leave town and go out into the fields and what not.

I just meant maybe they could stretch the truth a little and make some of the out of town gameplay be out where the wild life roams. Its not like any of the cities from GTA were exactly realistic.

Moscow. GTA Russia would be so cool.

Although I would be very excited if it was Vice City in the 80's. GTA VC was my favourite and I'd love to see a 7th Generation take on it. Just the 80's feel. Neon lights, Billie Jean and a Camero.

If they could make Liberty City that great, imagine what Vice City is like. Or San Andreas for that matter. I think it would be WAY too much work, but 3 (GTA IV) sized Liberty Cities and all that countryside and desert. You could drive for hours.

Although other interesting locations would be Chicago, Texas or Washington DC. It would be fun spawning a power boat in the Washington Monument.

I'm not too keen on GTA London though even though I'm British.

Personally, I'd like to see a GTA that encompassed North America, or the world really. Each City has it's own underworld to destroy/control etc.. Eventually, I think GTA will move to this scale, and it'd be a welcome thing. Imagine a bigger role for jets/aircraft, or huge yachts etc...

It could be amazingly fun.

From an artistic standpoint, 'Vice City' is still the most visually appealing entry in the series, and I would really like to see Rockstar North recreate that location for our current generation before moving on to new territory.

And I know it's a fan favorite, but I personally wouldn't mind if they let 'San Andreas' be the sole title taking place there.

As for the Tokyo and London suggestions, I'm sure they would do great with those, but didn't Dan Houser say that the series in it's entirety is meant to be an ironic take on the United States?

As much as I'd love to see GTA taken outside the US to the places Ben mentioned, I really don't see it happening, except maybe through more GTAIV:Episodes type deals, but then they would have to build the maps and so forth, unless they were to build the maps and put them onto the disc for a small portion of gameplay, then add onto that with DLC. That'd be cool I guess.

I don't think that what comes next will be GTA V. Rockstar have made a habit of using Liberty City as their base for each new generation and using it as the numbered iteration. So it will be called GTA: (insert city name here). So, my thoughts in America: Orlando, for R*'s take on Disneyland would be all kinds of twisted; Detroit, motor theft city; San Fransisco (I think I spelt that wrong), causing a three hundred car pile up on the Golden Gate Bridge then making them all explode would be awesome; Washington D.C., taking on some real criminals :P.
That's all I've got.
Peace.

I would like to see Vice City return. We could play as a sports fan traveling from a northern city, on a mission to hunt down a treacherous basketball star.

GTA: Seattle

No game is based in seattle. Flying off the space needle. Blowing up stadiums and ferrys. Drug smuggling coming in from Canada.

Perfect!

I'm waiting for the reviews this time. GTAV had better be more like Red Dead Redemption than GTAIV.

Sorry Ben, but Japan's just not that kind of culture

The culture to be dealing with guns, blood, drugs, etc.

Sure, all of that exists I'm sure, but very minimally compared to other countries.

I really don't see this working out too well.

I think you need to take a trip to Tokyo, my friend. Or watch a documentary or something.

They have the most graphically violent entertainment on the planet and more is accepted there than anywhere else.

They're not into guns/drugs though
That's present in films/animes but you'd rarely see a Japanese game based on that. Like GTA or a MAFIA game.

I didn't say it'd be a Japanese game, and it isn't for Japanese gamers. This is still for the Western fan base.

I think it's time to 'cross the border' for the GTA-franchise. I loved every GTA-game came out and played them nearly to death (don't wanna know how much of my life I've spent to them) - I liked Liberty City, Vice City, San Andreas an the new Liberty.

But now the series needs someting new, something revolutionary, as nice as all the American cities were, GTA needs kind of new atmosphere, new characters, new mentality - a new culture to build the same old sarcastic and ironic way of life on it. The same authentic characters, improved car-steering and weapons.

I like Ben's idea of a Tokyo setting, sound good to me. But I've never let down the experience of GTA:London all those years ago. London would be great. But even other European cities could be a good base for virtual-crimes, think of some russian outback or italian influence (Roma, where the mafia is 'born'!) to the game. I've read something about Berlin, but Germany for me won't be a good setting, even if I'm born here (yip, that's the reason for all those wrong lines). Germany indeed delivers a working crime-scene, but for GTA it would not work. Noop.

Personally, I would deny South America, 'cause Rockstar still working on Max Payne 3, which is settled down there - don't think they would use it for GTA V too.

Thanks for reading. ^^

SYDNEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
now that would be so cool!
but that will never happen so i guess ill have to settle for GTA vice city 2.
but than that will never happen either, so i guess ill have to settle for a HD collection.

speaking of open world games the mafia 2 demo came out today, just finished playing it.
besides the graphics im really impressed!
the graphics though are really disappointing, i mean this games been in development for over 4 years and it looks ok.
the walls, cars, roads, signs, everything really lacks detail, everything looks really low res!
hopefully this is a old build or something.
im getting it for the PC though, so hopefully that will fix things up.
the physics engine and the AI were a standout though, the way the cars explode or cement chipping of walls was really impressive!
even the AI is really good, they dont sit in one spot they try and flank you and draw fire.

Having been to Tokyo a few years back I've gotta admit, that would be a great place. What a city that is! Big and hi-tech. In San Andreas CJ took a Lear jet to Liberty City. I would love for the GTA 5's story to start in London then he flies to Tokyo and then flies back to Miami Vice City! By the way I bet the next protaganist will be a Female!

You heard it hear first! Imagine a hottie female character. We've had american, european, black, dominican. I think its time they mix it up with a sexy female lead. What do you think?

GTA: vatican city. You get to preform drive by blessings. Youll also have to keep all the heathens away from the popemobile. Side missions could include cover up as many molestation scandals as possible in 5 mins, convert the atheists, spreading the word of God and making people think there religion is wrong, payoff the alter boys and transfer the priest.

Lord knows how many thumbs down I will get for saying this, but I think that they could make another GTA set in Liberty City. Not for another few years though, only this time it would HAVE to be FULL size, and all of the cars statistics would HAVE to be correct. They would really haveto tune everything up and make it almost 1:1. Sadly, I think the only way that would ever happen is if it was PS3 exclusive, and I really cannot see that happening! Stupid XBOX letting us all down ;) I personally think that GTA4 was more like a test for them, just to see what they could do this generationg, and now they know. Where in for one hell of a ride!
